Optimal Sludge? The Price Of Program Integrity, Cass R. Sunstein, Julien L. Gosset
Optimal Sludge? The Price Of Program Integrity, Cass R. Sunstein, Julien L. Gosset
Duke Law Journal Online
Public officials often impose eligibility requirements for government programs that have two effects: (1) They screen out ineligible people and (2) they screen out eligible people. Consisting of paperwork requirements, interviews, waiting periods, and administrative burdens, such requirements are sometimes characterized as “sludge,” and for some eligible people, they might prove overwhelming or prohibitive. In these circumstances, there is a pervasive normative issue: What is the optimal tradeoff between the screening out of ineligible people and the screening out of eligible people? It is plausible to think that a great deal depends on numbers. If, for example, the number of …

Background: A global pandemic due to COVID-19 emerged in November 2019 and hit France in early March 2020. It not only resulted in a loss of lives, but also in very strict confinement measures. The objective of this study was to understand what the determinants of the changes in participants’ behavior and mental state were during the confinement. Methods: An online survey was launched on 23 April 2020 and closed on 7 May 2020. The final sample included 1454 participants from 24 to 65 years old. Descriptive and multivariate analyses were then performed. Results: In total, 28.7% reported having a …

A comprehensive understanding of spaceflight factors involved in immune dysfunction and the evaluation of biomarkers to assess in-flight astronaut health are essential goals for NASA. An elevated neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a potential biomarker candidate, as leukocyte differentials are altered during spaceflight. In the reduced gravity environment of space, rodents and astronauts displayed elevated NLR and granulocyte-to-lymphocyte ratios (GLR), respectively. To simulate microgravity using two well-established ground-based models, we cultured human whole blood-leukocytes in high-aspect rotating wall vessels (HARV-RWV) and used hindlimb unloaded (HU) mice. Both HARV-RWV simulation of leukocytes and HU-exposed mice showed elevated NLR profiles comparable to spaceflight …

History shows that the infectious disease (COVID-19) can stun the world quickly, causing massive losses to health, resulting in a profound impact on the lives of billions of people, from both a safety and an economic perspective, for controlling the COVID-19 pandemic. The best strategy is to provide early intervention to stop the spread of the disease. In general, Computer Tomography (CT) is used to detect tumors in pneumonia, lungs, tuberculosis, emphysema, or other pleura (the membrane covering the lungs) diseases. Disadvantages of CT imaging system are: inferior soft tissue contrast compared to MRI as it is X-ray-based Radiation exposure. …

The Financial Cost Of Sharps Injuries, Kevin Hambridge, Ruth Endacott, Andrew Nichols
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Research into sharps injuries has focused on the volume of incidents and, to a smaller degree, the psychological impact of those incidents. This narrative literature review instead explored the financial cost of sharps injuries as reported by both UK and international studies. This involved a search of 13 electronic databases and grey literature, with no set date limits, in June 2019. Both direct and indirect costs of sharps injuries were identified, indicating the high financial costs of such incidents to healthcare systems across many different countries each year. Further research is urgently needed to address the continued prevalence of sharps …

Diarrheal disease remains a major cause of childhood mortality and morbidity causing poor health and economic outcomes. In low-resource settings, young children are exposed to numerous risk factors for enteric pathogen transmission within their dwellings, though the relative importance of different transmission pathways varies by pathogen species. The objective of this analysis was to model associations between five household-level risk factors-water, sanitation, flooring, caregiver education, and crowding-and infection status for endemic enteric pathogens in children in five surveillance studies. Data were combined from 22 sites in which a total of 58,000 stool samples were tested for 16 specific enteropathogens using …

The Waterfall Crisis, Guiliana G. Grisaffi
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
While the Earth’s surface is 71% covered in water, that does not mean that one day all our water could be gone. The current global water crisis is not just a water crisis-it is a waterfall crisis. One wicked, terrible problem that leads to many other wicked problems, a waterfall crisis. Millions of women and young girls are taken out of work and school and instead forced to collect and gather fresh water for their families. Children are suffering from irreversible health consequences from toxic, contaminated water, an example of a health consequence is a lower IQ from lead poisoning. …

Airborne transmission has been recognized as a major transmission pathway for the infectious disease COVID-19. This study investigated the effectiveness of several indoor air quality (IAQ) control strategies on the mitigation of airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The well-known airborne disease infection risk model (Wells-Riley equation) was used to estimate the infection risk of the SARS-CoV-2 in seven (7) different types of spaces including conference center/ballrooms, hotel bistro//cafeteria, hotel lobby, classrooms (lecture), conference room/small classroom, hotel or cruise ship guest rooms and open plan offices. The IAQ control strategies included increased ventilation rate, improved air distribution …

A Mathematical Model Of Risk Factors In Hiv/Aids Transmission Dynamics: Observational Study Of Female Sexual Network In India, S. Saravanakumar, A. Eswari, L. Rajendran, Marwan Abukhaled
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, a mathematical model for the transmission dynamics of HIV/AIDS epidemic with emphasis on the role of female sex workers is considered. The model is a system of nine nonlinear differential equations that represent nine different groups of an HIV population. A modified approach of the homotopy perturbation method is used to derive an approximate analytical expression for each of the nine different groups that form HIV population. The analytical results are shown to be consistent with the numerical results obtained by the highly accurate fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The analytical solution will simplify studying the effect of each …

On The Stability Analysis And Solutions Of Fractional Order Pine Wilt Disease Model, A. M. A. El-Sayed, S. Z. Rida, Y. A. Gaber
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, we present the fractional order model (FOM) for the spread of the PWD. We show that this model possesses non-negative solutions as desired in any population dynamics. We compute the basic reproduction number R0 and illustrate the equilibrium points (EPs) as well as their stability of this model. We apply The Natural-Adomian decomposition method (N-ADM) and fractional Euler method (FEM) to solve this model. The results are compared with those obtained by classical Rung-Kutta (RK4) method in the case of integer order.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the social unrest pervading U.S. cities in response to the killings of George Floyd and other Black citizens at the hands of police are historically significant. These events exemplify dismaying truths about race and equality in the United States.
Racial health disparities are an inexcusable lesion on the U.S. health care system. Many health disparities involve medications, including antidepressants, anticoagulants, diabetes medications, drugs for dementia, and statins, to name a few. Managed care pharmacy has a role in perpetuating racial disparities in medication use. For example, pharmacy benefit designs are increasingly shifting costs of expensive medications …

California’s Franciscan missions were grounded in Indigenous homelands that to this day remain largely undertheorized and trivialized by scholarly and popular understandings of missions as inescapable fortresses of confinement. Narratives that position California’s missions as places of Indigenous imprisonment endure but they are at odds with a growing body of archaeological and documentary evidence demonstrating the persistence of Native lives, activities, and decision-making taking place within and beyond the walls of missions. We argue that interpretations of the missions in scholarly and popular conversation must make Indigenous persistence and resilient relationships to meaningful landscapes the cardinal priorities, not secondary attributes, …
