Identification And Characterization Of Bacteriophages For Phage Cocktail Formulation Specific To Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli, Pattida Kongsomboonchoke

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are commonly found in elderlies, infants, hospitalized patients, and most women. UTIs are caused by a variety of pathogens with uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is mostly prevalence. Even though UPEC can be treated with several antibiotics, the rapid emergence of multidrug resistant (MDR)-UPEC renders the antibiotic treatment no longer successful. Therapy using phages, which are bacterial viruses, has been considered but it is limited by bacterial resistance that develops during evolution. Fortunately, the suppression of phage resistance can be improved when used several phages as a cocktail. Here, I aim to formulate an efficient phage cocktail …

Amphibian population declines around the world have been attributed in part to the emergence of deadly pathogens. However, the severity of the effects of pathogens on amphibian communities can vary by species and location. This study focuses on assessing the prevalence of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal), and ranaviruses in populations of southern torrent salamanders (Rhyacotriton variegatus). I also tested for association between environmental factors and the prevalence and viral load of the three pathogens in Northern California. A total of 309 skin swab samples were collected from salamanders in nine sites in …

Amphibian populations are declining due to a variety of threats, including the chytrid fungal pathogen, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), the causative agent of the disease chytridiomycosis. Climate change and other stressors can have complicated interactions with amphibian disease. Some amphibian populations are less susceptible to chytridiomycosis due to factors such as symbiotic skin microbes that may inhibit Bd through secondary metabolites. There have been several attempts to develop probiotics from these symbiotic, antifungal bacteria to provide protection against Bd infection, but these studies have had mixed success. Our study evaluated anti-Bd bacteria isolated from the skin of Pacific chorus frogs (Pseudacris …

Background/aim: Considering its early bactericidal activity, isoniazid (H) is an important first-line agent in tuberculosis (TB) treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the treatment regimens and results of H-resistant pulmonary TB patients. Materials and methods: We retrospectively evaluated treatment regimens and results of 188 H-resistant pulmonary TB patients who were treated in our center between January 2015 and December 2017. Treatment regimens applied were noted and treatment outcomes were recorded. The long-term results were evaluated. Results: Totally 174 (92.6%) of 188 patients with H-resistant pulmonary TB achieved treatment success. Ninety-seven patients (51.6%) were cured and 77 patients …

Staphylococcus aureus is a remarkable infectious agent, and with the development of antibiotic resistance by S. aureus, finding new, effective, and safe alternative therapeutic options in animals and humans is crucially demanded. In this study, the occurrence of S. aureus was explored by collecting nonmastitis bovine milk samples first, and then the effects of herbal extracts on methicillinresistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains isolated from cow's milk and humans in the hospitals were investigated. The occurrences of S. aureus in bovine raw milk samples were 13.4%. All raw milk S. aureus isolates were fully susceptible to cefoxitin, ceftiofur, penicillin G, …

Phenotypic And Genotypic Characterization Of Antimicrobial Resistance In Commonly Isolated Salmonella Serovars From Chickens, Seyyi̇de Sariçam İnce, Mehmet Akan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Salmonellosis caused by Salmonella agents is the second most common zoonotic infection in humans. In recent years, Salmonella's increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been a concern. The major transmission route of Salmonella is consumption of contaminated poultry products. Therefore, monitoring of antimicrobial resistance in chicken-originated Salmonella is critically important. This study investigated AMR in four commonly isolated Salmonella serovars from chickens, namely Salmonella Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis), Salmonella Infantis (S. Infantis), Salmonella Kentucky (S. Kentucky), and Salmonella Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium). A total of 133 isolates were examined by phenotypic and genotypic AMR characterization. Resistance to 14 different antimicrobials and eight …

In this study, it was aimed to examine Canine Herpesvirus-1 (CHV-1) with different diagnostic methods and investigate the pathological changes in positive samples. For this purpose, 100 dog uteruses of different ages and breeds, were removed by ovariohysterectomy and their blood samples were used as the study material. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT) for serological diagnosis, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method for molecular diagnosis, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and immunofluorescence (IF) staining for immunopathological diagnosis were performed on the samples. Additionally, hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining was performed to examine the histopathological changes in the CHV- 1-positive …
