Trust And Subjective Knowledge Influence Perceived Risk Of Lead Exposure, Madeline Goebel, Chloe B. Wardropper Jan 2023

Trust And Subjective Knowledge Influence Perceived Risk Of Lead Exposure, Madeline Goebel, Chloe B. Wardropper

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Lead exposure is a persistent environmental hazard that poses risks to human health. But motivating protective action is challenging with this low visibility hazard whose health effects are often subtle and chronic. Higher risk perception is generally associated with taking protective measures, so public health efforts prioritize risk messaging. Yet, little is known about perceptions of lead exposure risk among the U.S. public. Using cross-sectional data from a national survey of 1035 U.S. residents, we measured the role of trust in government management of lead and subjective knowledge about lead as predictors of perceived risk of lead exposure, controlling for …

Impact Of Medicaid Expansion On Substance Abuse Treatment, Kyle Chapman Jan 2023

Impact Of Medicaid Expansion On Substance Abuse Treatment, Kyle Chapman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Introduction: The Medicaid expansion has insured millions of Americans since the passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010. Among this newly insured population, many of the enrollees have been diagnosed with a substance abuse disorder. Patients who have a substance use disorder diagnosis typically have multiple conditions that are treated simultaneously. When these patients have to seek healthcare services they are often uninsured. Unfortunately, since the patients are uninsured, the most frequent healthcare access points have been through admissions to more expensive areas of healthcare delivery such as the emergency department and subsequent inpatient services. The goals of the …

"We Don't Know What We Want": The Tug Between Rights And Public Health Online, Jonathan Zittrain

Duquesne Law Review

Twitter and Facebook boast billions of subscribers, many of whom are real people. The companies are also roundly hated, particularly by tech experts-at least those who follow them for something other than their stock performance.1 Objections to platforms' behavior are commonly expressed as amazement that they could be so obviously and consistently wrong in failing to police awful content their users post. There is also amazement about unobjectionable posts and comments from users that they take down.2 That, in turn, has led to pressure for regulatory initiatives to push the companies into doing what they so clearly ought …

Introduction: This research presents a complex case of a 70-year-old male with acute metabolic encephalopathy and biochemical septic shock, later attributed to cardioembolic ischemia, resulting from Methicillin-Sensitive Staphylococcus Aureus (MSSA) bacteremia with an elusive source of infection.

Case Description: The 70-year-old patient, with a medical history of hypertension and aortic valve stenosis status post-Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting and bioprosthetic valve replacement on dual anti-platelet therapy (clopidogrel and aspirin), was admitted following an unwitnessed fall and a day of vomiting and generalized weakness. Upon arrival, the patient exhibited altered mental status, hypotension, and acidosis. Initial diagnostic workup raised suspicion of biochemical …

Influences Of Host Cytokine Signaling On Kshv Infection In Tonsil-Derived B Lymphocytes, Nedaa Alomari Jan 2023

Influences Of Host Cytokine Signaling On Kshv Infection In Tonsil-Derived B Lymphocytes, Nedaa Alomari

Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations

Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is the etiologic agent of kaposi sarcoma. It is also associated with the B cell lymphoproliferative disorders, primary effusion lymphoma (PEL), multicentric Castleman disease (MCD) and KSHV inflammatory cytokine syndrome (KICS). Existing research reveals that KSHV has developed numerous strategies to alter host cytokine signaling activities to facilitate viral persistence and escape host immune surveillance.

Despite three decades of research, there are still many questions in this field awaiting further investigation. This dissertation will investigate host cytokines as factors influencing the establishment of KSHV infection in the human tonsil. We have identified and characterized different cytokines …

Comparison Of Clinical Study Results Reported In Medrxiv Preprints Vs Peer-Reviewed Journal Articles, Guneet Singh Janda

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The aim of this project was to evaluate the concordance among study characteristics, results, and interpretations described in preprints of clinical studies that are subsequently published in peer-reviewed journals (preprint-journal article pairs).

In this cross-sectional analysis, preprints posted on medRxiv in September 2020 were identified. Four evaluators determined how many preprints were subsequently published in peer-reviewed journals as of September 2022, calculating the time from preprint posting to publication. For preprints with multiple versions, the most recent version prior to journal acceptance was selected. Preprints updated after journal acceptance were excluded. For preprint-journal article pairs describing clinical trials, observational studies, …

IdeaFest 2023

The Protein Data Bank (PDB) is a repository of atomic level resolution biological structures determined by researchers around the world. Protein macromolecular structures have become an essential tool for biotechnology fields. They are used to understand the chemical and biological processes in living systems and disease, and for precise drug design. Here students utilized the molecular modeling software UCSF ChimeraX to visualize 3D PDB protein structures of their choice. Students produced Quad Chart presentations and printed 3D models to allow for deep learning in protein structure.

Flush It! Managing Antibiotic Residual Volume In Acute Care, Breanna Lien

IdeaFest 2023

This project considers the implication of administering small-volume antibiotics as an intermittent primary intravenous infusion. This method leaves significant residual volume in the IV tubing which leads to deviations from the prescribed dose and rate of administration. This is a common practice in acute care. A possible quality improvement project design using evidence-based practice is exhibited. The goal of the QI project would be to standardize policy, procedure, and administration of small-volume antibiotics to ensure consistent care and treatment for every patient.

Analysis Of A G-Protein Coupled Receptor, Cb2, David Lopez, Amanda Ratcliff, Frank E. Cappuccio, Jenny A. Cappuccio

IdeaFest 2023

The CB2 G-protein coupled receptors (GPCR) is found in the brainstem & hippocampus and is devoid of psychotropic effects but is less studied than the CB1 receptor. CB2 is inducible in CNS microglia following inflammation or injury, indicating a role in pain response. Here we sought to analyze CB2 using ChimeraX structures and overcome GPCR protein insolubility in extraction. The pET28a-CNR2, plasmid created and transformed into E.coli pLysS, was confirmed by restriction digest. Purification of CB2 micelles was achieved by affinity chromatography with detergent (43 kD). We aim to utilize nanodiscs to stabilize CB2, allowing studies of the molecular underpinnings …

Modelling Of Covid-19 Using Fractional Differential Equations, Rishi Patel, P. Sainani, M. Brar, R. Patel, X. Li, J. Drozd, F. A. Chishtie, A. Benterki, T. C. Scott, S. R. Valluri

Physics and Astronomy Publications

In this work, we have described the mathematical modeling of COVID-19 transmission using fractional differential equations. The mathematical modeling of infectious disease goes back to the 1760s when the famous mathematician Daniel Bernoulli used an elementary version of compartmental modeling to find the effectiveness of deliberate smallpox inoculation on life expectancy. We have used the well-known SIR (Susceptible, Infected and Recovered) model of Kermack & McKendrick to extend the analysis further by including exposure, quarantining, insusceptibility and deaths in a SEIQRDP model. Further, we have generalized this model by using the solutions of Fractional Differential Equations to test the accuracy …

Gene therapy manipulates or modifies a gene that provides a new cellular function to treat or correct a pathological condition, such as cancer. The approach of using gene manipulation to modify patient's cells to improve cancer therapy and potentially find a cure is gaining popularity. Currently, there are 12 gene therapy products approved by US-FDA, EMA and CFDA for cancer management, these include Rexin-G, Gendicine, Oncorine, Provange among other. The Radiation Biology Research group at Henry Ford Health has been actively developing gene therapy approaches for improving clinical outcome in cancer patients. The team was the first to test a …

BACKGROUND: Women who use drugs (WWUD) have low rates of contraceptive use and high rates of unintended pregnancy. Drug use is common among women in rural U.S. communities, with limited data on how they utilize reproductive, substance use disorder (SUD), and healthcare services.

OBJECTIVE: We determined contraceptive use prevalence among WWUD in rural communities then compared estimates to women from similar rural areas. We investigated characteristics of those using contraceptives, and associations between contraceptive use and SUD treatment, healthcare utilization, and substance use.

DESIGN: Rural Opioids Initiative (ROI) - cross-sectional survey using respondent-driven sampling (RDS) involving eight rural U.S. regions …
