Synthesis Of Fluoroorganics And Applications Of Novel Fluorinated Building Blocks, Wei Wei
Synthesis Of Fluoroorganics And Applications Of Novel Fluorinated Building Blocks, Wei Wei
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Diastereoselectivity of fluorination of a carbanion alpha to a sulfone in enantiomerically pure N-Boc protected (R)- and (S)-2,2-dimethyl-4-((arylsulfonyl)methyl)oxazolidines has been studied. Fluorination proceeded with good to excellent diastereoselectivity, which was base-dependent and was highest with lithium diisopropylamide (LDA). Diastereoselectivity also depended on the aryl moiety of the aryl sulfone and was highest with benzothiazole-derived sulfones. Under basic conditions, epimerization at the C–F stereogenic center alpha to the sulfone has been achieved for the first time and proceeded with good to excellent diastereoselectivity, which was highest in the case of a benzothiazole sulfone and with a lithium base. …
Tgf-B Signaling Mechanisms In Caenorhabditis Elegans Response To Bacterial Pathogens, Emma J. Ciccarelli
Tgf-B Signaling Mechanisms In Caenorhabditis Elegans Response To Bacterial Pathogens, Emma J. Ciccarelli
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
When exposed to infection, the nematode C. elegans mounts an innate immune response through secretion of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). Different signaling pathways in the worm regulate release of these AMPs. One highly conserved pathway is the C. elegans BMP like pathway – regulated by the ligand DBL-1. The DBL-1 pathway is noted for its significant role in development but has also been shown to regulate many post-developmental processes within the worm, including the immune response. We are interested in determining how DBL-1 signaling can mediate a response specific to immunity, separate from its other functions in the worm. Through survival …
The Effect Of An American Heart Association–Approved Exercise Regimen On Burnout In Nurse Practitioners And Physician Assistants Working In Emergency Departments, Michelle Lee Johnson
The Effect Of An American Heart Association–Approved Exercise Regimen On Burnout In Nurse Practitioners And Physician Assistants Working In Emergency Departments, Michelle Lee Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Burnout is a widely known state of physical and emotional fatigue previously noted to affect as many as 60% of healthcare providers, but one that is understudied in nurse practitioners and physician assistants working in emergency departments. It is imperative that the providers of healthcare recognize in themselves signs of burnout and have resources available to mitigate the condition. A pretest–posttest, quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group, descriptive research design with descriptive statistics analysis was used to analyze answers to an email-based survey sent to nurse practitioners and physician assistants working for one large emergency medicine staffing company. The intent of this …

OBJECTIVE: From January 1, 2018, until July 31, 2020, our hospital network experienced an outbreak of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). The goal of our study was to improve existing processes by applying machine-learning and graph-theoretical methods to a nosocomial outbreak investigation.
METHODS: We assembled medical records generated during the first 2 years of the outbreak period (January 2018 through December 2019). We identified risk factors for VRE colonization using standard statistical methods, and we extended these with a decision-tree machine-learning approach. We then elicited possible transmission pathways by detecting commonalities between VRE cases using a graph theoretical network analysis approach.

Real-World Covid-19 Vaccine Effectiveness Against The Omicron Ba.2 Variant In A Sars-Cov-2 Infection-Naive Population, Jonathan J Lau, Chao Wu, Gaya K Amarasinghe, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant has demonstrated enhanced transmissibility and escape of vaccine-derived immunity. Although first-generation vaccines remain effective against severe disease and death, robust evidence on vaccine effectiveness (VE) against all Omicron infections, irrespective of symptoms, remains sparse. We used a community-wide serosurvey with 5,310 subjects to estimate how vaccination histories modulated risk of infection in infection-naive Hong Kong during a large wave of Omicron BA.2 epidemic in January-July 2022. We estimated that Omicron infected 45% (41-48%) of the local population. Three and four doses of BNT162b2 or CoronaVac were effective against Omicron infection 7 days after vaccination (VE of …

The Immune Modulation On Innate Immunity, From Pathogen Recognition To Fungal Clearance., Ko-Wei Liu
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
The human lung is not sterile but a complex environment with various microorganisms. Besides commensals in the lung, hundreds to thousands of individual microbiomes enter the lung every day but without causing the symptom. Host innate immunity plays an important role in maintaining homeostasis of the lung environment and as the first defense line against pathogens. Aspergillus fumigatus (A. fumigatus) is a saprophytic filamentous fungus that can cause human disease in immune compromised patients. However, with functional innate immunity, immune cells can quickly recognize pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) from A. fumigatus through pattern recognition receptors (PRRs). The activation of …

This meta-analysis was performed to assess the efficacy of the diagnostic tests for scabies infections that are currently in wide use. Scabies is most commonly diagnosed through clinical presentations; however, due to the wide array of symptoms, diagnosis is difficult. The most commonly used diagnostic test is skin scraping. However, this test relies on correctly selecting the site of mite infection for sampling. Due to the mobile nature of a live parasitic infection, the mite can often be missed based on its current location within the skin. The goal of this paper is to determine if a gold standard confirmatory …

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
Although recent literature addresses online pedagogy and online counselor education, few articles address the challenges faced by counselor educators during emergency remote teaching, an unplanned and unanticipated switch from in-person education to online education. To address this gap, we conducted a phenomenological study of the lived experiences of practicum and internship coordinators (N = 8) during the emergency remote teaching phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Five themes emerged: (a) uncertainty, (b) adaptation to leadership, (c) changes to student experience, (d) personal support, and (e) readiness. Implications for counselor educators and supervisors are addressed.

Statement of Purpose: Sometimes, I find it difficult to comprehend the vast problems and systems of inequity that exist within the United States’ (US) healthcare system. The US’s profit-driven model of health is so deeply integrated into our society that it feels impossible to change. It is hard to imagine an alternative. The COVID-19 pandemic has created an environment where the health of our communities is brought to the forefront. It is a moment when as a society we are beginning to understand that health crises are not a sum of individual failures, but instead are systematically produced and reproduced …

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has detrimental multi-system consequences. Symptoms may appear during the acute phase of infection, but the literature on long-term recovery of young adults after mild to moderate infection is lacking. Heart rate variability (HRV) allows for the observation of autonomic nervous system (ANS) modulation post-SARS-CoV-2 infection. Since physical activity (PA) can help improve ANS modulation, investigating factors that can influence HRV outcomes after COVID-19 is essential to advancements in care and intervention strategies. Clinicians may use this research to aid in the development of non-medication interventions. At baseline, 18 control (CT) and 20 post-COVID-19 (PCOV) participants were …

Membrane proteins expressed on the surface of enveloped viruses are conformational antigens readily recognized by B cells of the immune system. An effective vaccine would require the synthesis and delivery of these native conformational antigens in lipid membranes that preserve specific epitope structures. We have created an extracellular vesicle–based technology that allows viral membrane antigens to be selectively recruited onto the surface of WW domain–activated extracellular vesicles (WAEVs). Budding of WAEVs requires secretory carrier-associated membrane protein 3, which through its proline-proline-alanine-tyrosine motif interacts with WW domains to recruit fused viral membrane antigens onto WAEVs. Immunization with influenza and HIV viral …

The group B coxsackieviruses (CVBs) exist in six serotypes (CVB1 to CVB6). Disease associations have been reported for most serotypes, and multiple serotypes can cause similar diseases. For example, CVB1, CVB3, and CVB5 are generally implicated in the causation of myocarditis, whereas CVB1 and CVB4 could accelerate the development of type 1 diabetes (T1D). Yet, no vaccines against these viruses are currently available. In this review, we have analyzed the attributes of experimentally tested vaccines and discussed their merits and demerits or limitations, as well as their impact in preventing infections, most importantly myocarditis and T1D.

A grounded theory study was conducted to better understand the process AYA use to manage their care following a SCT. Specific aims included: 1) to explore self-management facilitators, barriers, processes and behaviors within individual, family, community and healthcare system domains using the pediatric self-management framework to develop initial interview guides; 2) to describe how AYA manage their care regimen post HSCT; and 3) to describe rates of oral medication adherence for AYA post HSCT and how they relate to patterns of self-management.
