Effect Of High Latitude On The Variability Of Human Event-Related Brain Potentials, Anita Marie Bush
Effect Of High Latitude On The Variability Of Human Event-Related Brain Potentials, Anita Marie Bush
Theses (Unassigned)
European researchers (Anderson, Chambers, Myhre, Nicholson, & Stone, 1984) at 69 degrees north latitude, have reported seasonal changes in the human electroencephalogram, EEG. Other researchers from the North American mid-latitudes (Deldin, Duncan, & Miller, 1989a, 1989b), using event-related brain potentials, ERPs, have reported changes associated with ambient light. Similar changes in the event-related brain potentials of humans have not been reported from the high latitudes nor by longitudinal methods. This dissertation longitudinally investigated ERP variability in normal humans living at high latitude. One hundred and twelve residents of Fairbanks, Alaska participated in single-trial ERP testing, both auditory and visual, to …

Endogenous Retinoids In Rat Epididymal Tissue And Rat And Human Spermatozoa, R. S. Pappas, M. E. Newcomer, D. E. Ong
Endogenous Retinoids In Rat Epididymal Tissue And Rat And Human Spermatozoa, R. S. Pappas, M. E. Newcomer, D. E. Ong
Faculty Publications
Recent work has demonstrated high levels of retinoid binding proteins in rat epididymis, and a lumenal retinoic acid binding protein has been purified. These findings suggested that vitamin A may be involved in spermatozoal maturation in the epididymis. We further addressed this question by quantifying retinol, retinyl esters, and retinoic acid isomers from perfused epididymal tissue, from rat testicular and epididymal spermatozoa, and from human ejaculate sperm. HPLC showed vitamin A levels to be higher in caput than in corpus or cauda tissue. Retinoic acid and 9-cis-retinoic acid were found to be graded from lowest levels in caput to highest …

The Cry-Wolf Phenomenon And Its Effect On Alarm Responses, James P. Bliss
The Cry-Wolf Phenomenon And Its Effect On Alarm Responses, James P. Bliss
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Responses to alarms are assumed important. Yet failure to respond to alarms is recognized, although is not well understood or quantified. Conditions that might induce a failure to respond include alarm unreliability (i.e., numerous false alarms, the "cry-wolf" effect), high primary task demand, or low criticality of the alarm itself. The goals of this research were to substantiate the existence of the cry-wolf effect, quantifying its effect on operator performance, and to examine the relation between the cry-wolf effect and alarm criticality. One hundred thirty-eight UCF students alternatively performed two primary tasks, chosen from the Automated Performance Test System. Subjects …

Adding New Life To Years: A Senior Peer Exercise Program, Cynthia Lymm Pearl Nayer
Adding New Life To Years: A Senior Peer Exercise Program, Cynthia Lymm Pearl Nayer
Theses
The thesis "Adding New Life to Years: A Senior Peer Exercise Program" explores the development and impact of a peer-led exercise program aimed at improving physical, social, and emotional health among older adults. Recognizing the challenges associated with aging—such as decreased mobility, social isolation, and chronic health issues—the study focuses on engaging active seniors as volunteer leaders to conduct low-intensity exercise classes for frail elderly participants.
This program aims to foster mutual benefits: healthy senior volunteers experience enhanced self-worth, social engagement, and physical fitness, while the frail elderly improve in areas like blood pressure, mood, and perceived self-efficacy. Grounded in …
Exercise In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Christy R. Hokanson
Exercise In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Christy R. Hokanson
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Before 1980, the effects of exercise on people with rheumatoid arthritis was considered negative, even though no research substantiated this belief. Medical professionals prescribed rest and passive exercise as the activity level for people with rheumatoid arthritis. So, the patients rested and developed many of the problems associated with inactivity. This resulted in more disability and less people with rheumatoid arthritis in the work force.
This paper is a literature search which examines current research on exercise in rheumatoid arthritis. It attempts to answer many of the questions asked about exercising with rheumatoid arthritis. Discussed are the topics of deconditioning, …

Curriculum Workshop, Robert D. Shumer
Curriculum Workshop, Robert D. Shumer
Evaluation/Reflection
This is an introductory workshop on developing curriculum using a student-centered, community-based approach. It is founded largely on the philosophy of John Dewey and represents an approach produced at the Far West Laboratory for Educational Research and Development. It has been implemented in many school districts across the country in the 1970s and 1980s, and is still a very viable approach to curriculum development in the 1990s. It is not specifically limited to service-learning programs; it is applicable to any program where students expect to earn academic credit for learning which occurs outside the classroom. It is intended for use …

A Survey Of Opinions And Knowledge Of Parents Of High School Athletes About Athletic Training, Brooke Lynn Bixby
A Survey Of Opinions And Knowledge Of Parents Of High School Athletes About Athletic Training, Brooke Lynn Bixby
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to describe the opinions and beliefs of parents of high school athletes in Cedar Falls, IA about the need for a certified athletic trainer to be employed by the high school. Subproblems in this study were to determine: (a) the parents' opinions concerning the importance of athletic trainers, (b) their knowledge and awareness of an athletic trainer's duties and responsibilities, and (c) their willingness to participate in a funding program for a certified ~thletic trainer to be employed at the high ichool. An 18-item questionnaire was mailed to 100 parents of athletes attending Cedar …
Detection Of Sexual Cues: An Assessment Of Nonaggressive And Sexually Coercive College Males, Rita Kenyon-Jump
Detection Of Sexual Cues: An Assessment Of Nonaggressive And Sexually Coercive College Males, Rita Kenyon-Jump
Dissertations
Seventy-four nonaggressive and 78 sexually coercive college males, as determined by the Sexual Experiences Survey (Koss & Oros, 1982) and ranging in age from 18-25 years, participated in a study designed to assess their ability to detect specific behavioral cues of female partners’ unwillingness to engage in kissing, genital fondling, and sexual intercourse. Contrary to prediction, a 2 (nonaggression and sexual coercion) X 3 (kissing, fondling, and intercourse) analysis of variance revealed no statistically significant difference between the nonaggressive and sexually coercive males in their ability to detect cues of female unwillingness to engage in kissing, genital fondling, and sexual …
Cepstral And Auditory Model Features For Speaker Recognition, John M. Colombi
Cepstral And Auditory Model Features For Speaker Recognition, John M. Colombi
Theses and Dissertations
The TIMIT and KING databases, as well as a ten day AFIT speaker corpus, are used to compare proven spectral processing techniques to an auditory neural representation for speaker identification. The feature sets compared were Linear Predictive Coding (LPC) cepstral coefficients and auditory nerve firing rates using the Payton model. This auditory model provides for the mechanisms found in the human middle and inner auditory periphery as well as neural transduction. Clustering algorithms were used to generate speaker specific codebooks - one statistically based and the other a neural approach. These algorithms are the Linde-Buzo-Gray (LBG) algorithm and a Kohonen …
