Comparison Of Different Signal Processing Algorithms To Extract The Respiration Waveform From The Ecg, David J. Caggiano
Comparison Of Different Signal Processing Algorithms To Extract The Respiration Waveform From The Ecg, David J. Caggiano
Theses
Power spectral analysis of heart rate variability is a powerful tool to measure the activity of the parasympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system noninvasively. To determine the parasympathetic activity, the frequency of respiration must be known. However, during ambulatory studies, the frequency of respiration is not acquired. To alleviate this problem, methods have been proposed in the past to derive the respiration from the ECG. Unfortunately, these previous methods are unreliable if the subject's breathing rate is uncontrolled. In this study, four methods to derive the respiration waveform from the electrocardiogram (ECG) were developed. Two leads of ECG and …

Paper Session Ii-B - U.S./ Russian Eva Interoperability Status, Richard K. Fullerton, L. Dale Thomas
Space Congress® Proceedings
Guidance for the goals of U.S. and Russian cooperation in the International Space Station (ISS) was provided in an addendum to the Program Implementation Plan, dated November 1, 1993, which was jointly signed by the NASA Administrator and the RSA General Director. Subsequent working level agreements for Extravehicular Activity (EVA) have resulted in joint projects which are building confidence and capabilities for commonality of hardware and operations. Parallel EVA planning and implementation of the Shuttle missions to Mir and the assembly of ISS are proving beneficial to both programs. Experience in each program is being fed back into the other …

Paper Session Ii-B - Research Plans For The International Space Station, William P. Gilbreath
Space Congress® Proceedings
The International Space Station, now under construction by all of the leading space-faring countries around the world, will provide a tremendous asset to the international research community. It will not only enhance and broaden present research objectives, but also enable new research initiatives only achievable on such a well-equipped platform. NASA is working with the international research community to develop a coordinated plan for on-board research. The International Space Station research platform will provide an excellent sustained low gravity environment for laboratory research, as well as a robust long-term platform for observational research. Studies in fundamental physical, chemical, and biological …

The Effects Of Chromium Picolinate Supplementation On Body Fat, Lean Body Mass, And Respiratory Exchange Ratio, Matthew K. Beaty
The Effects Of Chromium Picolinate Supplementation On Body Fat, Lean Body Mass, And Respiratory Exchange Ratio, Matthew K. Beaty
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects, on college-age males, of ingesting chromium picolinate over a 6-week period when administered as a supplement to their diet. Fifty males, ages 18 to 25 years, had their respiratory exchange ratio (R), body fat percentage, and lean body mass measured prior to and following a 6-week supplementation period. Subjects were randomly placed into a chromium, placebo, or control group. All subjects were instructed to maintain daily activities. Analysis of variance revealed no significant differences in R values, body fat percentage, or lean body mass among the chromium, placebo, or control …

Turning From Tort To Administration, Richard A. Nagareda
Turning From Tort To Administration, Richard A. Nagareda
Michigan Law Review
My objective here is to challenge the notion that the recent mass tort settlements - for all their novel qualities in the mass tort area - are truly sui generis in the law. Rather, I contend that the rise of such settlements in tort mirrors the development of public administrative agencies earlier in this century - that, in both instances, powerful new institutions emerged outside preexisting channels of control to wield significant power over human lives and resources. I argue that courts usefully may draw upon familiar doctrines of judicial review in administrative law to form a conceptual framework for …
Signal Processing Techniques In Heart Rate And Systolic Arterial Blood Pressure Variability Studies, Christopher O'Bara
Signal Processing Techniques In Heart Rate And Systolic Arterial Blood Pressure Variability Studies, Christopher O'Bara
Theses
Power spectral analysis of heart rate and systolic arterial blood pressure variability provides a window to the activity of the autonomic nervous system. To derive power spectra from raw blood pressure and electrocardiogram signals, many steps of signal processing must be performed. Most popular methods of spectral analysis require evenly spaced samples; therefore interpolation and resampling techniques must be used.
The results of the present study indicate that different interpolation techniques result in spectral distortions that vary depending upon the interpolation methods used as well as physiological parameters such as heart and respiration rate. Different interpolation methods applied to heart …

Rationality And The Foundations Of Positive Political Theory, Mathew D. Mccubbins, Michael F. Thies
Rationality And The Foundations Of Positive Political Theory, Mathew D. Mccubbins, Michael F. Thies
Faculty Scholarship
In this paper, we discuss and debunk the four most common critiques of the rational choice research program (which we prefer to call Positive Political Theory) by explaining and advocating its foundations: the rationality assumption, component analysis (abstraction), strategic behavior, and theory building, in turn. We argue that the rationality assumption and component analysis, properly understood, can be seen to underlie all social science, despite the protestations of critics. We then discuss the two ways that PPT most clearly contributes to political science (i.e., what distinguishes it from other research programs), namely the introduction of strategic behavior (people do not …
Sound Theology: The Risk Of Audition, Ed Foley
Sound Theology: The Risk Of Audition, Ed Foley
Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers
(Excerpt)
It was after I had settled on a tide for this presentation that the irony of it all hit me. Thinking about being on this campus and holding forth on the topic on "sound theology" and the "risk of audition," I was suddenly reminded of an autumn day In 1968, when I first came to this University, played an organ audition with then reigning chapel organist, Dr. Philip Gehring. As I reflect back, however, I am not sure whether that experience should be appropriately categorized as a risk or musicological embarrassment

Humankind's Greatest Gift: On The Innateness Of Language, Tina Brown
Humankind's Greatest Gift: On The Innateness Of Language, Tina Brown
Nebraska Anthropologist
Although the environment has an effect on the quality of language development, the fact that language is limited to the human species, that neurological structures of the brain specialize in language functions, and that universal characteristics of language and language development occur independently of environmental factors suggests that human language has a definite biological component.
