Designing A Clinical Study With Dietary Supplements: It's All In The Details, Z. Elizabeth Floyd, David M. Ribnicky, Ilya Raskin, Daniel S. Hsia

Faculty and Student Publications

A successful randomized clinical trial of the effect of dietary supplements on a chosen endpoint begins with developing supporting data in preclinical studies while paying attention to easily overlooked details when planning the related clinical trial. In this perspective, we draw on our experience studying the effect of an ethanolic extract from Artemisia dracunculus L. (termed PMI-5011) on glucose homeostasis as a potential therapeutic option in providing resilience to metabolic syndrome (MetS). Decisions on experimental design related to issues ranging from choice of mouse model to dosing levels and route of administration in the preclinical studies will be discussed in …

Characterizing Human Gut Bacterial Tir Domains In Vitro, In Gnotobiotic Mice And Malnourished Children, James Stephen Weagley Jan 2022

Characterizing Human Gut Bacterial Tir Domains In Vitro, In Gnotobiotic Mice And Malnourished Children, James Stephen Weagley

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Worldwide, malnutrition (undernutrition) is the leading cause of death in children under 5. Studies of healthy members of birth cohorts from low- and middle-income countries have identified a program of gut microbial community development that is disrupted in children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and moderate acute malnutrition (MAM). This perturbed gut microbiome development has been linked to the pathogenesis of malnutrition. Repair of this gut microbial dysbiosis in children with MAM with microbiota-directed complementary foods (MDCFs) designed to increase the fitness and expressed beneficial functions of underrepresented bacterial community members restores healthy growth, including improvements in mediators of metabolic …

P300 Or Cbp Is Required For Insulin-Stimulated Glucose Uptake In Skeletal Muscle And Adipocytes, Vitor F. Martins, Gretchen A. Meyer, Et Al. Jan 2022

P300 Or Cbp Is Required For Insulin-Stimulated Glucose Uptake In Skeletal Muscle And Adipocytes, Vitor F. Martins, Gretchen A. Meyer, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

While current thinking posits that insulin signaling to glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) exocytic translocation and glucose uptake in skeletal muscle and adipocytes is controlled by phosphorylation-based signaling, many proteins in this pathway are acetylated on lysine residues. However, the importance of acetylation and lysine acetyltransferases to insulin-stimulated glucose uptake is incompletely defined. Here, we demonstrate that combined loss of the acetyltransferases E1A binding protein p300 (p300) and cAMP response element binding protein binding protein (CBP) in mouse skeletal muscle caused a complete loss of insulin-stimulated glucose uptake. Similarly, brief (i.e., 1 hour) pharmacological inhibition of p300/CBP acetyltransferase activity recapitulated this …

When training specialists studying in the relevant specialties of higher professional education, the university has the right to use the specified structure, content and procedure for implementing a cycle of general mathematical and natural science disciplines, changing the depth of elaboration of individual sections of the programs. This can lead to a redistribution of educational material between lectures, seminars and laboratory workers, a change in their nature and focus

Place Is Power: Investing In Communities As A Systemic Leverage Point To Reduce Breast Cancer Disparities By Race, Matthew Jay Lyons, Senaida Fernandez Poole, Ross C Brownson, Rodney Lyn Jan 2022

Place Is Power: Investing In Communities As A Systemic Leverage Point To Reduce Breast Cancer Disparities By Race, Matthew Jay Lyons, Senaida Fernandez Poole, Ross C Brownson, Rodney Lyn

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Racial disparities in breast cancer present a vexing and complex challenge for public health. A diverse array of factors contributes to disparities in breast cancer incidence and outcomes, and, thus far, efforts to improve racial equity have yielded mixed results. Systems theory offers a model that is well-suited to addressing complex issues. In particular, the concept of a systemic leverage point offers a clue that may assist researchers, policymakers, and interventionists in formulating innovative and comprehensive approaches to eliminating racial disparities in breast cancer. Naming systemic racism as a fundamental cause of disparities, we use systems theory to identify residential …

The Relationship Between Sleep Quality And Social Media Content, Isaac Moskowitz

Psychology Honors Papers

The present study investigated the relationship between social media posting behavior and sleep quality in a population of college students (N = 30) over 5 nights. Sleep duration and number of nightly disruptions were used to measure sleep quality using a smartphone app, SleepScore, that participants downloaded prior to the study. Every day after recording their sleep participants were presented with a “prompt word” and asked to make a post related to their respective prompt on the anonymous social media network Yik-Yak. A content analysis was then performed with the assistance of an independent coder in order to categorize the …

The Varieties Of Spiritual States Triggered By Sex: A Systematic Review Of The Empirical Literature, Jenny Wade

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

This systematic review integrates the empirical evidence of spiritual experiences triggered by sexual activity, including studies by 10 authors. Despite venerable sexual meditative traditions of embodied spiritual practices, such as Hindu Tantra, Vajrayana Buddhism, and Taoism, empirical studies of sexual spiritual experiences are in their infancy. This review presents the range of sexual altered states experiences identified to date and how they qualify as spiritual experiences phenomenologically and in terms of their lifechanging effects. Seventeen distinct sexual-spiritual states have been identified across authors, with 4 others identified at significant levels in qualitative studies by individual authors. As an emergent area …

Human Otop1 Proton Channel Can Function As A Monomer, Gabriella Abigail Ulloa Jan 2022

Human Otop1 Proton Channel Can Function As A Monomer, Gabriella Abigail Ulloa

Theses and Dissertations

Otopetrins (OTOP) represent a new family of eukaryotic proton channels that do not share structural similarities with other renowned ion channels. Otop1 was initially known for its involvement in vestibular function and its significance for otoconia formation before it was established as a bona fide sour taste receptor. The cryo-EM structures for several Otop channels have been determined and demonstrated Otop1 as a homodimer comprised of two subunits. Each subunit constitutes twelve transmembrane helices that can be further partitioned into two structurally similar six transmembrane domains designated as the N and C domains. Molecular dynamic simulations have also previously shown …

"It Will Help Him Wonderfully": Placebo And Meaning Responses In Early Medieval English Medicine, Rebecca Brackmann Jan 2022

"It Will Help Him Wonderfully": Placebo And Meaning Responses In Early Medieval English Medicine, Rebecca Brackmann

Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications

Many early English medical remedies have been dismissed, even by sympathetic scholars, as “mere placebo,” with the implication that therapeutic benefits to the patient, if any, are thereby insignificant. My article challenges such dismissals of placebo responses in Old English medicine. I draw on current research demonstrating that in certain conditions, a placebo effect, or “meaning response” (to use Daniel Moerman’s term), can have striking success in bringing about healing. I describe contemporary clinical practices shown to enhance patient responses to pharmaceutical treatments both inert and active, and demonstrate that these strategies are also visible in early English medical practice. …

Is Time With Pets Good For Our Cardiovascular Health? The Surprising Results Of 129 Studies On Dogs’ Effect On Human Health., Harold Herzog

Herzog - Companion Animals and Health

https://www.wellbeingintlstudiesrepository.org/sc_herzog_comphealth/

The well-studied health benefits (of pet ownership) are claimed to be much greater than the research results actually support. For example, it is claimed that a beloved dog will lower a person’s blood pressure, reduce stress hormones, calm anxiety, and even make it easier to interact with other human beings. A recent systematic review indicate that the physiological effects of interacting with a pet may not be as strong as is commonly reported.

Criminal Acts And Basic Moral Equality, John A. Humbach Jan 2022

Criminal Acts And Basic Moral Equality, John A. Humbach

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Modern criminal justice presupposes that persons are not morally equal. On the contrary, those who do wrong are viewed by the law as less worthy of respect, concern and decent treatment: Offenders, it is said, “deserve” to suffer for their misdeeds. Yet, there is scant logical or empirical basis for the law's supposition that offenders are morally inferior. The usual reasoning is that persons who intentionally or knowingly do wrong are the authors and initiators of their acts and, as such, are morally responsible for them. But this reasoning rests on the assumption that a person's mental states, such as …

Torture, Ethics, Accountability?, David R. Katner Jan 2022

Torture, Ethics, Accountability?, David R. Katner

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

Torture--including waterboarding--has been banned under international and domestic law in the United States dating back to World War II when the U.S. sought to hold Japanese interrogators accountable for waterboarding American prisoners of war. Following the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the Bush administration sought legal justification from White House counsel to detain and initiate interrogation practices long considered to constitute acts of torture. After legal memos were drafted, psychologists and physicians along with nurses and other medical professionals engaged in waterboarding and other forms of abusive interrogation often resulting in no reliable intelligence from …

An Ayurgenomics Approach: Prakriti-Based Drug Discovery And Development For Personalized Care, Zoufang Huang, Vivek P. Chavda, Rajashri Bezbaruah, Vladimir N. Uversky, Sucharitha Palagati, Aayushi B. Patel, Zhe-Sheng Chen

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Originating in ancient India, Ayurveda is an alternative medicinal approach that provides substantial evidence for a theoretical-level analysis of all aspects of life. Unlike modern medicine, Ayurveda is based upon tridoshas (Vata, pitta, and Kapha) and Prakriti. On the other hand, the research of all the genes involved at the proteomics, metabolomics, and transcriptome levels are referred to as genomics. Geoclimatic regions (deshanupatini), familial characteristics (kulanupatini), and ethnicity (jatiprasakta) have all been shown to affect phenotypic variability. The combination of genomics with Ayurveda known as ayurgenomics provided new insights into tridosha that may pave the way for precision medicine (personalized …

Yoga, Stress, And College Students During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Mixed Methods Study, Lori Klein

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

College students have experienced exponential increases in stress and mental health concerns that continued to rise during the global coronavirus pandemic. Yoga is a popular, well-regarded method for improving psychological wellbeing, and this study explored how students’ perceived stress improved during a semester-long introductory yoga course upon returning to in-person instruction after a period of remote learning as a result of coronavirus restrictions. This study used an explanatory sequential mixed method design to first measure perceived stress scores and then compare this data to student-reports of wellbeing. College students (n = 121) enrolled in 8 sections of Yoga 1 completed …

The Impact Of Uncertainty Regarding Patent Eligible Subject Matter For Investment In U.S. Medical Diagnostic Technologies, A. Sasha Hoyt Jan 2022

The Impact Of Uncertainty Regarding Patent Eligible Subject Matter For Investment In U.S. Medical Diagnostic Technologies, A. Sasha Hoyt

Washington and Lee Law Review

Historically, 35 U.S.C. § 101, the statute governing patent eligible subject matter, has been construed broadly—with its legislative history indicating that it should cover “anything under the sun that is made by man.” The Supreme Court crafted three exceptions to § 101: (1) abstract ideas, (2) laws of nature, and (3) natural phenomena. In recent years, the Supreme Court’s eligibility jurisprudence has further narrowed § 101 to effectively exclude meritorious medical diagnostic methods. Indeed, since the Court’s decision in Mayo Collaborative Services v. Prometheus Laboratories, Inc., the Federal Circuit has held every single diagnostic method claim brought before it …

Understanding The Role Of Race In American Medicine, Fariel C. A. Lamountain Jan 2022

Understanding The Role Of Race In American Medicine, Fariel C. A. Lamountain

Honors Theses

Long running inequity in health care and outcomes in the United States stem from failure to acknowledge the underlying role of the Transatlantic slave trade as it manifests in all facets of American society and commerce. This paper focuses specifically on the American medical system and its foundations to understand the precursors to generational trends in lack of access to healthcare and poor health for Black communities. This paper uses a three-pronged approach to understand the racist cycle of inequity, highlighting the history and origins of racism in American medicine, personal accounts and statistical evidence of inequity, and community and …
