The Effect Of A Patient-Centered Fall Prevention Tool On Reducing Falls, Maria Gracia Skallet Dec 2023

The Effect Of A Patient-Centered Fall Prevention Tool On Reducing Falls, Maria Gracia Skallet

Master's Projects and Capstones

Problem: Maintaining patient safety is of utmost importance in healthcare. Healthcare organizations develop policies and protocols to minimize preventable harm and deliver care safely. However, hospital falls continue to occur, and preventing falls remains challenging. Falls and fall-related injuries can significantly impact the patient’s quality of life, cause prolonged hospital stays, and higher hospital expenses. Implementing an effective fall prevention program is imperative.

Context: There has been an increased incidence of falls within two medical-surgical units (5C and 5D) at Hospital J in Northern California despite using fall prevention measures such as hourly rounding, wearing yellow skid socks and yellow …

Background: Low awareness about palliative care among the global public and healthcare communities has been frequently cited as a persistent barrier to palliative care acceptance. Given that knowledge shapes attitudes and encourages receptiveness, it is critical to examine factors that influence the motivation to increase knowledge. Health information-seeking from individuals and media has been identified as a key factor, as the process of accessing and interpreting information to enhance knowledge has been shown to positively impact health behaviours. Objective: Our study aimed to uncover public sentiments toward palliative care in Singapore. A conceptual framework was additionally developed to investigate the …

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs And Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment For Pain Management In Patients With Osteoarthritis: A Literature Review, Veenah K. J. Francis, Jennifer M. Jost, Allyson Jack, Timothy Johnson, Sarah Klein, Jake Darbhanga, Adam Hurwitz, Rohit S. Mehra, Holly B. Waters

HPD Articles

The pathophysiology of osteoarthritis (OA) involves the destruction of articular cartilage and the overgrowth of bone with lipping and spur formation. Nerve endings in the joint capsule and adjacent tissues play a major role in the pain mechanisms of osteoarthritis. This often requires patients to seek pain control measures beyond over-the-counter drugs, such as local anesthetics. Osteopathic manipulation treatment (OMT) is a conservative, non-pharmacological treatment that can be used to help treat chronic pain associated with OA. Other non-pharmacologic therapies include weight loss, exercise, physical therapy (PT), and assistive devices. However, pharmacologic management may be added synergistically to control flares …

Intervention: Volunteer education was implemented to increase volunteer knowledge about end-of-life nutrition and feeding patients. The educational session included a PowerPoint lecture, a small group discussion portion, and hands-on skills …

Expanding The Volunteer Role To Include Advance Care Planning Knowledge, Andrea C. Leomo Aug 2023

Expanding The Volunteer Role To Include Advance Care Planning Knowledge, Andrea C. Leomo

Master's Projects and Capstones

Problem: Transition patients at the end-of-life are those patients who are not mentally ready or physically eligible for hospice thus not enrolled in a Palliative or Hospice Program. Only one-third of the Transition patient census had completed and filed advance care plans. Healthcare providers are obligated to perform life-saving measures unless documented otherwise. A lack of advance care planning can create complicated scenarios and cause discordant care incidents.

Context: End-of-life care is a delicate subject to navigate conversations with patients. With holistic care being a large component of hospice and palliative care, it is important to have updated and accurate …

Improving Nursing Provision Of Patient Care In High Acuity Medical Units And Fostering Their Wellbeing By Providing Education On End-Of-Life Care And Finding Joy And Meaning In Work: A Quality Improvement Project, Donna Durant

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts

Abstract

Palliative care employs a multidisciplinary approach focusing on the quality of life for patients and their families experiencing the complexity of serious illness (Nelson, 2021). Due to shortages of palliative care specialists and a lack of nurse proficiency in caring for people with serious illnesses, integrating a palliative care approach is an ethical obligation for nursing (Parekh de Campos, 2022). Gaps in palliative care and end-of-life education for new nurses coming to the acute care setting in a large tertiary hospital in Southwestern Pennsylvania were identified.

Evidence-based education was delivered by advanced practice providers trained in this content area. …

Improving Patient Self-Efficacy, Readiness, And Completion Of Advance Care Planning Documents Using Prepare Documents And Advance Care Planning Group Referral, Marie Vassiliadis

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Advance Care Planning (ACP) is an ongoing discussion about medical decision making between a provider, patient, and support person. ACP can also include legal documentation in the form of an advance directive (AD). Nationally, only 36.7% of adults complete any form of AD for end-of-life care. Recently, ACP has become an important quality metric that many organizations are prioritizing. The purpose of this evidence-based project is to improve ACP readiness, self-efficacy, and documentation among patients at an internal medicine clinic using the PREPARE program and referral to an ACP group meeting. PREPARE for Your Care is an online program aimed …

A Literature Review On Understanding, Solidifying, And Expanding The Role Of Art Therapy In Death And Dying, Deborah D. Clark May 2023

A Literature Review On Understanding, Solidifying, And Expanding The Role Of Art Therapy In Death And Dying, Deborah D. Clark

University Honors Theses

The purpose of this literature review is to weave together an understanding of what research exists around art therapy in death and dying, what the role of art therapy is in end-of-life care and education, and determine what gaps exist for further study. When it comes to the topic of death and dying, most of us would agree that end-of-life care is extremely important, though this agreement often falls apart regarding what that care looks like, and how we do (or don't) talk and learn about death and dying. This review argues for an integrated holistic model of care concerning …

The Benefits Of Art Therapy On Stress And Anxiety Of Oncology Patients During Treatment, Helen Shiepe May 2023

The Benefits Of Art Therapy On Stress And Anxiety Of Oncology Patients During Treatment, Helen Shiepe

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

Within the last ten years research on art therapy and its positive impact on oncology patients’ stress and anxiety during treatment has been minimal. Oncology patients whether they are children or adults when diagnosed experience similar reactions due to their diagnosis, treatment, and in some cases end of life care. The current question is whether or not art therapy does have a positive impact on decreasing the stress and anxiety with oncology patients while undergoing treatment. Deane, Fitch & Carmen (2000), discussed art therapy as a healing art that is “intended to integrate physical, emotional, and spiritual care by facilitating …

The Integration Of Catholic Mission And Ethics In Contributing To A Good Death, Noah Dimas May 2023

The Integration Of Catholic Mission And Ethics In Contributing To A Good Death, Noah Dimas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Catholic healthcare ethics exists within a morality that is under regular heavy scrutiny. This is furthered by the healthcare space itself becoming more secular as the greater society itself moves beyond the religious origins of healthcare. However, this does not have to be relegated to a negative. Rather, this can become a strong call to action for Catholic healthcare to rally together and advocate for itself in the wider healthcare space. This is especially true as these challenges to the Catholic moral-ethical framework begin to question the presence of both Catholic and religious healthcare as whole. These challenges, if left …

The Ethics Of Governance Of Data Analytics In Healthcare, Andrew Harrington May 2023

The Ethics Of Governance Of Data Analytics In Healthcare, Andrew Harrington

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent literature and studies on data governance usually focus on data ethics and governance from a specific country or industry, which has been mostly business, without considering the larger global impact that is affected. Data is a worldwide asset; thus, its implications and considerations should be viewed as such. Hence, this dissertation attempts to incorporate this view by weaving together topics in healthcare, such as the blending of finance and delivery, data governance at the micro and macro levels, data analytics in healthcare, ethics of AI and information management, and technology’s impact on end-of-life practices. Through highlighting these areas of …

National Cancer Control Plan Of The Korea: Current Status And The Fourth Plan (2021-2025), Kyu-Tae Han, Jae Kwan Jun, Jeong-Soo Im

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Cancer management has become a major policy goal for the government of the Korea. As such, the government introduced the National Cancer Control Plan (NCCP) to reduce the individual and social burdens caused by cancer and to promote national health. During the past 25 years, 3 phases of the NCCP have been completed. During this time, the NCCP has changed significantly in all aspects of cancer control from prevention to survival. The targets for cancer control are increasing, and although some blind spots remain, new demands are emerging. The government initiated the fourth NCCP in March 2021, with the vision …

Subcutaneous Infusions For Comfort Care Patients, Kelci Steeples May 2023

Subcutaneous Infusions For Comfort Care Patients, Kelci Steeples

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Over 75% of hospice cases fail to eliminate pain despite high quality hospice care (Herr et al., 2010). The purpose of this quality project was to improve pain management in end-of-life patients via subcutaneous medication administration. An orderset was created to include subcutaneous infusion medications using the collaborative efforts of pharmacy leadership and palliative medicine leadership. Patients requiring pain management who were under hospice or palliative care and, lost intravenous (IV) access, were considered for this quality improvement project. A total of eleven patients met project qualifications, but unfortunately, two patients passed away before receiving pain medications subcutaneously. Project findings …

What Is The Importance Of Social Work Involvement In Hospice Care Transitions For Ill Children And Their Families, Natalie Rodas, Guillermina Morales

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Thousands of children who face terminal illnesses die annually in the United States, 10% of those children and their families have hospice care services available. Through this study, the importance of social work involvement in hospice care transitions for ill children and their families were examined. Due to the scarcity of social work in hospice care settings, this study helped amplify research on the importance of social workers in hospice care for ill children and their families. The study consisted of individual interviews held via Zoom with medical social workers that have experience working in pediatric hospice care. The individual …

Reflections On Co-Creating Nature-Based Virtual Reality Experiences For Adults Living With Severe Copd, Olivia Mcanirlin

All Dissertations

This dissertation focused on studying the lived experience of working with and for people living with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to co-create a personalized nature-based virtual reality (VR) experience. People with severe COPD have issues with being able to breathe clearly and deeply, which then influences their ability to visit outdoor places. Outdoor places have been shown to have many positive effects on multi-dimensional health outcomes. Severe COPD can also make traveling to faraway destinations and even visiting nearby outdoor spaces difficult. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to develop personalized nature-based VR experiences as an alternative …

Quantitative data concluded that participants would like to see an increase in the …

Does Voluntary Euthanasia Fulfill Or Contradict A Physicians’ Oath To “Do No Harm”, Sarah Margaret Carr Apr 2023

Does Voluntary Euthanasia Fulfill Or Contradict A Physicians’ Oath To “Do No Harm”, Sarah Margaret Carr

Academic Festival

Voluntary Euthanasia, or VE, is a practice which has been medically, and ethically, debated for decades. VE is a medical procedure in which a physician, with the explicit and informed consent of the patient, administers a lethal agent for the purpose of relieving a patients intolerable and incurable suffering (Euthanasia, 2022). The availability of this practice as an option for terminally diagnosed patients, to allow them to choose to die on their own terms, has been debated for its ethicality. Through my research, I strove to answer the question of whether VE fulfills, or contradicts, a physician’s oath to “do …

Palliative Care In The Neonatal Population, Raegan Miller Apr 2023

Palliative Care In The Neonatal Population, Raegan Miller

MSN Capstone Projects

In more than 90% of cases of neonate deaths, terminal comfort care was provided in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) (Soni et al., 2011). Palliative care teams are increasing, but not enough organizations have embraced the need for better palliative care guidelines. Nor do many organizations know when, how, or if palliative care should even be introduced. These events lead to comfort care measures being underutilized in the NICU for most newborn infants with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. Neonatal palliative care is discussed more than in years past, but little research has been dedicated to how early palliative care …

Dreams And Dream Work Of Older Adults In Transition: A Review Of The Literature, Tamara J. Hinojosa Apr 2023

Dreams And Dream Work Of Older Adults In Transition: A Review Of The Literature, Tamara J. Hinojosa

All Faculty Scholarship (Archived)

Older adults face unique life transitions related to retirement from paid work, relocation of residence to higher levels of care, and bereavement/end-of-life. Research exploring dream content and dream work for older adults can facilitate understanding about their unconscious experiences and emotions, can promote greater understanding about their mental health needs, and support dream work methods that enhance well-being for older adults in transition. Although studies in this area are minimal, there is more research about the transitions of bereavement and death for older adults as compared to research in the areas of retirement and relocation of residence for older adults. …
