Message From The State: Uncovering Effects Of Public Policy On Women's Movements In Chile And The Czech Republic, Petra Hejnova Dec 2012

Message From The State: Uncovering Effects Of Public Policy On Women's Movements In Chile And The Czech Republic, Petra Hejnova

Political Science - Dissertations

This study relies on the cases of the Czech Republic and Chile to examine the ways in which state policies affect women's movements' emergence under both authoritarian and democratic political regimes. As such, this dissertation provides some important clues into how citizens' experience with certain policies enhances or delimits their future political action, and how it affects their beliefs and attitudes. Gaining a better understanding about the relationship between policies and civic participation is particularly important in the case of young democracies, which are trying to overcome their authoritarian past, and whose new democratic political regimes are in some instances …

Which Study Method Works Best? A Comparison Of Soar And Sq3r For Text Learning, Sarah C. Kasson Dec 2012

Which Study Method Works Best? A Comparison Of Soar And Sq3r For Text Learning, Sarah C. Kasson

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

One hundred thirty-eight college students participated in a study comparing the SOAR (Select, Organize, Association, Regulate) and SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review) study systems to each other and to students’ preferred study methods. Though both systems have been researched independently, just one other study has compared these study systems to each other. College students were assigned randomly to one cell of a 2x2 factorial design (method: SOAR or SQ3R; material: supplement or no supplement) or to a preferred-study-method control group. Groups were trained in their respective system (SOAR, SQ3R, or control) and then given materials about educational measurement to …

Assessing Local And Landscape Constraints On Habitat Management For Grassland And Upland Birds, Christopher F. Jorgensen Dec 2012

Assessing Local And Landscape Constraints On Habitat Management For Grassland And Upland Birds, Christopher F. Jorgensen

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Species-habitat relationships are a central tenant to ecological theory and are critical in species management. Yet, despite a long-standing tradition of utilizing species-habitat relationships in both theoretical and applied ecology, there remains to be no clear predictors of how species relate to habitat. In order to further our understanding of the habitat selection process, we must begin to comprehend what spatial scales species form habitat decisions and what potential behavioral or life-history predictors underlie the scale of habitat decisions. During 2010-2012, I conducted point counts for grassland birds across Nebraska and assessed habitat relationships over multiple spatial scales to construct …

The Impact Of Islam On Women In The Middle East A Discussion Of The Political Role Of Islam In Turkey, Saudi Arabia, And Lebanon, Elise Barimo Dec 2012

The Impact Of Islam On Women In The Middle East A Discussion Of The Political Role Of Islam In Turkey, Saudi Arabia, And Lebanon, Elise Barimo

HIM 1990-2015

The social instability of the Middle East is often assumed to be consequential predominantly from the influences of extreme traditional Islamic practices; with substantial prominence placed upon the treatment of and violence against Middle Eastern women. This discussion seeks to directly prove the prevalence of Islamic influence on Middle Eastern politics and the resulting social instability. This assessment is designed around an interdisciplinary examination of coalescent factors. By assessing the political history, social and cultural lifestyle, and political and legal situation of the region, the assessment examines the contributors to the social instability of Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, and Turkey. The …

Community Perspectives On Black Parent Engagement In West Las Vegas Before And After Desegregation: A Case Study, Tonia Faye Holmes-Sutton Dec 2012

Community Perspectives On Black Parent Engagement In West Las Vegas Before And After Desegregation: A Case Study, Tonia Faye Holmes-Sutton

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

According to research on parent engagement in K-12 schools, disconnects often exist between parent involvement as defined by school leaders and the African American families and communities they serve (Delgado-Gaitan, 1991; Tillman, 2009). Unfortunately, these competing definitions and conceptions of parent involvement often result in school leaders and administrators perceiving that Black students do not achieve as well as their White peers because Black parents are not involved or engaged in the education of their children (Cooper, 2010; Cooper, 2009; Fields-Smith, 2005). This perception undermines the development of positive home-school relations between school leaders, educators, and Black parents, and in …

Christina Of Markyate, Manly Woman Of God: Mysticism, Monasticism, And Masculinity In Twelfth-Century England, Angela Ruth Bolen Dec 2012

Christina Of Markyate, Manly Woman Of God: Mysticism, Monasticism, And Masculinity In Twelfth-Century England, Angela Ruth Bolen

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Christina of Markyate, a little-known twelfth-century mystic, challenged the secular masculinity of medieval England. Christina abandoned her home and family to search for a greater understanding of Christ, and her search led her away from the will of her father, her husband, and her king. Unlike other female religious of the time, she lived in an all-male monastery. Male religious figures from throughout England regularly sought her out for her wisdom and insight. This examination of Christina’s life reveals the complex relationship of sex, gender, and religion in the Middle Ages, because in her search to understand Christ, and by …

Eusebius Of Caesarea’S Oration In Praise Of Constantine As The Political Philosophy Of The Christian Empire, Benjamin David Brandon Dec 2012

Eusebius Of Caesarea’S Oration In Praise Of Constantine As The Political Philosophy Of The Christian Empire, Benjamin David Brandon

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Eusebius of Caesarea delivered a panegyric in the thirtieth year of Constantine’s reign, 335 AD, celebrating the piety and faith of the emperor. This panegyric, the Oratio de Laudibus Constantini, or Oration in Praise of Constantine, provides a political theology for the divine sanction of the Christian monarch by linking the emperor’s rule to the rule of God. Much of the Oratio is an account of the pious deeds and divine victories of Constantine’s reign, suggesting that the emperor had in fact achieved the ideal of a Christian monarch. Through the Logos (Word or Reason) of God, the …

Perceptions Of A Middle School Reconfiguration: A Descriptive Case Study, Karen Billingsley Lasker Dec 2012

Perceptions Of A Middle School Reconfiguration: A Descriptive Case Study, Karen Billingsley Lasker

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative research study was to follow 1 principal's journey to assist the district in its reconfiguration goals, and help the school change through deep examination of district personnel's and parents' perceptions of the change process. This was done by acknowledging distinctions and differences between junior high schools, the current middle school, and the new middle school, delineated by current middle school-reform research. This study explored issues regarding the policies, personnel, decision-making strategies, timelines, and organizational structures of the new middle school.

The reconfiguration resulted in rezoning attendance zones, reconstructing the new high school, raising the new …

Encouraged By A Little Progress: Voting Rights And The Contests Over Social Place And Civil Society In Tennessee's Fayette And Haywood Counties, 1958-1964, Richard Lavell Saunders Nov 2012

Encouraged By A Little Progress: Voting Rights And The Contests Over Social Place And Civil Society In Tennessee's Fayette And Haywood Counties, 1958-1964, Richard Lavell Saunders

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Between 1958 and 1964 the citizens of black-majority populations in adjoining West Tennessee counties struggled to claim and exercise citizens' rights to participate in civil society. Voting rights activism amon the black community was answered with an economic embargo conducted by county officials and the busines community. Voting rights were the fracture point in civic society as both counties made the change from tenant to mechanized agriculture and wrestled over the civil and economic position of a no-longer-necessary laboring population. This study examines voter registration as a catalyst of socioeconomic change and social discourse in rural America. During the 1960s …

International Activity And Domestic Law, Adam I. Muchmore Nov 2012

International Activity And Domestic Law, Adam I. Muchmore

Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)

This essay explores the ways States use their domestic laws to regulate activities that cross national borders. Domestic-law enforcement decisions play an underappreciated role in the development of international regulatory policy, particularly in situations where the enforcing State's power to apply its law extraterritorially is not contested. Collective action problems suggest there will be an undersupply of enforcement decisions that promote global welfare and an oversupply of enforcement decisions that promote national welfare. These collective action problems may be mitigated in part by government networks and other forms of regulatory cooperation.

Whose Trash Is It, Anyway? A Stratigraphic And Ceramicanalysis Of The South Grove Midden (44fx762/17), Mountvernon, Virginia, Eleanor E. Breen Nov 2012

Whose Trash Is It, Anyway? A Stratigraphic And Ceramicanalysis Of The South Grove Midden (44fx762/17), Mountvernon, Virginia, Eleanor E. Breen

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Throughout the twenty-year history of professional archaeological excavations at George Washington's Mount Vernon, a single refuse feature represents the only deposit unearthed that can speak to the material manifestations of changes in the Washington households within a pre-Revolutionary War context. With the discovery of the large, oval-shaped feature that came to be known as the South Grove Midden (44FX762/17), Mount Vernon archaeologists realized they had uncovered a stratified deposit that could link the successive Washington households with their material culture. This paper asks: whose trash is it, anyway? To answer this question, I employ the methodology of increasingly specific seriation …

The Van Lidth De Jeude Family And The Waste From Their Privy: Material Culture Of A Wealthy Family In 18th-Century Tiel, The Netherlands, Michiel H. Bartels

Northeast Historical Archaeology

This study uses the comprehensive material culture of the 18th-century privy of the regent family Van Lidth de Jeude in Tiel (the Netherlands). The analysis takes advantage of the secondary sources that are common in the Netherlands to evaluate the privy contents. The archaeological finds are interpreted with the aid of historical documents, contemporary literature and probate inventories, and the content of the privy is set against the background of an 18th-century provincial town in the heart of the Netherlands. This combined study reveals much surprising information about the daily and private lives, personal history, gender aspects and socioeconomic status …

Turmoil And Power: A Thematic And Chronological Study Of Dynastic Transition In Late Period Egypt, Jared Brent Krebsbach Nov 2012

Turmoil And Power: A Thematic And Chronological Study Of Dynastic Transition In Late Period Egypt, Jared Brent Krebsbach

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Egypt's Late Period (728-341 BC) was a time of frequent political transition where dynasts, many of them foreign, usurped the throne and established new dynasties through a number of different methods. This was a stark contrast to earlier periods in pharaonic Egypt where dynasties were usually long-lived and violent dynastic transition was the exception not the rule. The turbulent political situation in the Late Period affected many different facets of life in Egypt so a complete examination of the historical processes that were taking place at the time will help current scholarship illuminate more about this often enigmatic period. This …

Strengthening Biblical Historicity Vis-À-Vis Minimalism, 1992-2008 And Beyond, Part 2.1: The Literature Of Perspective, Critique, And Methodology, First Half, Lawrence J. Mykytiuk

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

This series of articles covers scholarly works in English which can, at least potentially, be associated with a positive view of biblical historicity regarding the periods preceding the Israelites’ return from exile. Part 2 covers works that treat the concepts and methodological issues at the center of the maximalist-minimalist debate. (Parts 3–5 will cover works on evidences.)

This article, the first half of Part 2, focuses on works that provide a framework in which there exists the realistic possibility for large amounts of Hebrew Scripture to stand as valid historical source material— while still subject to comparison with other sources. …

Historiographic Perspectives Of Context And Progress During A Half Century Of Progressive Educational Reform, Ellen Durrigan Santora Nov 2012

Historiographic Perspectives Of Context And Progress During A Half Century Of Progressive Educational Reform, Ellen Durrigan Santora

Education and Culture

In many ways, the historiography of progressive education parallels American historiography as well as the historiography of education. This comes as no surprise when we realize the American Historical Association (AHA) has played a major role in the professional foundations of both. While early twentieth century historians emphasized national unity, homogeneity, and the importance of America's destiny, historians of education, mostly educators, produced inspiring histories that sought to ennoble the new profession of teaching. However academic arguments of relevance, presentism, and utility came to haunt both historical traditions. Academic historians debated the value of presentism while, educators debated the relative …

Leta Stetter Hollingworth And The Speyer School, 1935-1940: Historical Roots Of The Contradictions In Progressive Education For Gifted Children, Rose A. Rutnitski

Education and Culture

Leta Stetter Hollingworth, a pioneer of gifted education in America, embodies the dichotomy between the ideals of progressive education and the measurement movement prevalent at the beginning of this century, the movement most closely associated with the identification of gifted and talented students. The Speyer School experiment illustrated how the measurement paradigm could dominate a very democratic model of elementary education for exceptional children. There are vestiges of the strictly "objective" measurement paradigm in the identification of students for gifted programs today, juxtaposed with a very democratic paradigm in curriculum and teaching in those same programs. This article briefly documents …

The Cardinal Principles Report Revisited, William G. Wraga Nov 2012

The Cardinal Principles Report Revisited, William G. Wraga

Education and Culture

Scholars looking back on the impact of the Cardinal Principles (Commission 1918a) report generally agree that the comprehensive high school model was widely adopted in the United States in so far as the scope of secondary course offerings was broadened to serve a wider portion of the age cohort than had historically been the case. It is at this point, however, where scholarly agreement about this historic document seems to end. Curriculum historians such as Tanner and Tanner (1990) and Kliebard (1992) recommend a periodic revisiting of the original texts of foundational documents of the curriculum filed. A review of …

Neoliberal Globalization And The Politics Of Migration In Sub-Saharan Africa, Saul Tobias Ph.D. Nov 2012

Neoliberal Globalization And The Politics Of Migration In Sub-Saharan Africa, Saul Tobias Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Over the last few decades, many states in sub-Saharan Africa have adopted draconian anti-migrant policies, leaving refugees and migrants vulnerable to violence, harassment, and economic exploitation. These policies represent a shift from the relatively hospitable attitude shown by many African nations in the immediate post-colonial period. Explanations at the local level do not adequately explain the pervasiveness of these changes or why many developing states are now replicating the migration discourse and practices of the global north. Drawing on scholarship and data from a number of states in the region, including Tanzania, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa, this paper argues …
