There Is No Bournville In Africa: English Chocolate Makers, African Cocoa Producers, And The Ethics Of Capitalism, Ryan Harold Minor
There Is No Bournville In Africa: English Chocolate Makers, African Cocoa Producers, And The Ethics Of Capitalism, Ryan Harold Minor
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of this study is to contextualize the present day use of forced labor in West Africa within the larger historical framework of ongoing international labor exploitation in the chocolate industry as a whole. This study examines the English chocolate industry from its beginnings in the mid 19th century to the present day and its founders' complex and often contradictory relationships with domestic factory workers and African cocoa producers.

Rural Hospitals (Flex Program)
The purpose of this study is to evaluate why current treatment goals for patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) are not being achieved despite a large body of evidence supporting regionalized ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) systems. An online survey tool, developed by the research project team, was used to poll the Critical Access Hospitals in Nebraska in order to understand delay factors and other barriers to executing a STEMI system in a rural area. The authors found that the rural STEMI care system lacks a coordinated systems considered to be essential for urban areas. Several areas of potential failure in …

Joseph Smith, Jesus, And Satanic Opposition: Atonement, Evil, And The Mormon Vision, Steven L. Olsen, Douglas J. Davies
BYU Studies
Douglas J. Davies is one of the most insightful and prolific scholars of Mormonism working today. He is a professor in the Department of Theology and Religion at the University of Durham, UK. Two of his earlier studies--The Mormon Culture of Salvation (2000) and An Introduction to Mormonism (2003)--analyze foundational aspects of Mormonism from an engaging academic synthesis of history, religious studies, cultural studies, literary studies, theology, and philosophy. The breadth and depth of his scholarly background enable him to address new and crucial questions, yielding remarkable insights. For example, The Mormon Culture of Salvation proposes that the plan …

"That Indispensable Figment Of The Legal Mind": The Contract Of Employment At Common Law In Ontario, 1890-1979, Claire Isabel Mummé
PhD Dissertations
“The relation between an employer and an isolated employee or worker is typically a relation between a bearer of power and one who is not a bearer of power. In its inception it is an act of submission, in its operation it is a condition of subordination, however much the submission and the subordination may be concealed by the indispensable figment of the legal mind known as the 'contract of employment'.” Otto Kahn-Freund , Labour and the Law (London: Stevens, 1977). This study examines the legal evolution of the common law of employment contracts in Ontario between the 1890s and …

Emerging Imagery: The Great Famine In Nineteenth Century Irish Lit, Barbara A. Pitrone
ETD Archive
The critical debate surrounding the Great Famine in Irish Literature centers on the notion of a perceived silence. While some scholars claim that there is a literary void in Irish Literature following this cataclysmic event, others wonder whether language is even capable of describing the extreme physical, emotional, and psychological suffering that is inflicted upon the victims when such tragedies occur. Centuries of imperialism and colonialism had created a class divide so wide and an Irish economy so fragile that when a calamity such as famine occurred, it was the poverty-stricken, predominately Irish-Catholic peasantry that suffered most. Poor and illiterate, …
New Light And Old Shadows: John G. Turner’S Attempt To Understand Brigham Young, Craig L. Foster
New Light And Old Shadows: John G. Turner’S Attempt To Understand Brigham Young, Craig L. Foster
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Brigham Young has repeatedly been described as larger than life and most people, critics and supporters, would agree. Brigham Young (1801–1877), second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, led the Saints like a modern- day Moses from the turmoil of Nauvoo to the Great Basin. He then oversaw the settlement of over three hundred communities in the intermountain west. He directed the growth and development of the LDS Church and left an indelible mark on both Mormonism and the western United States. Brigham Young was, indeed, larger than life.

Principals And Presidents Of Marshall University: 1837-2013, Lisle G. Brown
Librarian Research
Marshall University has been known by three official names, and thirty-nine individuals have guided it as its forty chief administrative officers—one man served as its principal twice. The institution began as Marshall Academy in 1837, was renamed Marshall College in 1858, and finally became Marshall University in 1961. Of the thirty-nine persons who have shepherded the institution during its one-hundred and seventy-five years, thirty-eight were men and one was a woman. Eight men were principals during the Marshall Academy years, and five were teachers who stepped in to keep the academy functioning during critical years, especially the Civil War. It …

Advisor: Hossein N. Yarandi, PhD
Major: Nursing (Urban Health)
Degree: Doctor of Philosophy
BACKGROUND: HIV–related sleep disruption is a common complaint of persons with HIV infection. With the demographical shifts, African American women have now emerged as one of the fastest growing HIV populations today, yet they remain a vulnerable and underrepresented population in the sleep literature.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this pilot study was to explore the dynamics of HIV–related sleep disruption and wellbeing in asymptomatic HIV–seropositive AA women of childbearing age within …

Conservation And Ecology Of Marine Forage Fishes— Proceedings Of A Research Symposium, September 2012, Theresa Liedtke, Caroline Gibson, Dayv Lowry, Duane Fagergren
United States Geological Survey: Publications
Locally and globally, there is growing recognition of the critical roles that herring, smelt, sand lance, eulachon, and other forage fishes play in marine ecosystems. Scientific and resource management entities throughout the Salish Sea, agree that extensive information gaps exist, both in basic biological knowledge and parameters critical to fishery management. Communication and collaboration among researchers also is inadequate.
Building on the interest and enthusiasm generated by recent forage fish workshops and symposia around the region, the 2012 Research Symposium on the Conservation and Ecology of Marine Forage Fishes was designed to elucidate practical recommendations for science and policy needs …
Medicaid Managed Long-Term Care: Is Florida Ready, Rebecca C. Bell
Medicaid Managed Long-Term Care: Is Florida Ready, Rebecca C. Bell
St. Thomas Law Review
Medicaid is a nationwide health insurance program, created in 1965 as Title XIX of the Social Security Act for the poorest and sickest individuals. The Medicaid program operates through a federal and state partnership with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS") providing federal oversight. States must provide coverage of certain groups and services in order to receive federal funds for their Medicaid programs. However, states may include additional "optional" groups and services in each state plan. States use different methods of service delivery to Medicaid beneficiaries. In July 2011, a national average of 74.22% of Medicaid beneficiaries were …

Introduction, Daniel C. Peterson
Introduction, Daniel C. Peterson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
In the spring or early summer of 1820, “some few days” after his epochal vision of the Father and the Son, the young Joseph Smith gave an account of the experience to a Methodist minister with whom he “happened to be in company.” The minister had been active in the “excitement” about religion that inspired Joseph’s fateful decision to go alone into the woods near his house to pray. Naïvely, the boy expected his story of a Bible-like divine manifestation to be well received. It was not.

Dr. William Gorgas And His Management Style In The Eradication Of Yellow Fever During The Panama Canal Construction: A Historical Case Study, Faisal H. Aboul-Enein
2010-2016 Archived Posters
This study describes the style of management of Dr. William Gorgas as he led the public health effort to reduce diseases to a level that permitted the completion of the Panama Canal construction. Initially, Gorgas was skeptical of the mosquito vector theory. He fully accepted this theory after participating in Walter Reed's massive cleanup of Havana, Cuba during the Spanish American War of 1898. During 1905 to 1914, Gorgas was selected to lead the sanitary effort during the construction of the Panama Canal. The lessons learned from this historical case study provide public health administrators with guidance to effectively lead …
Nephite Insights Into Israelite Worship Practices Before The Babylonian Captivity, A. Keith Thompson
Nephite Insights Into Israelite Worship Practices Before The Babylonian Captivity, A. Keith Thompson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
General historical consensus holds that synagogues originated before the destruction of the Second Temple in AD 70, and therefore probably originated during the Babylonian captivity. The suggestion in Philo and Josephus that synagogues may have originated during the exodus was discredited by some historians in the 17th century, yet the Book of Mormon speaks of synagogues, sanctuaries, and places of worship in a manner which suggests that Lehi and his party brought some form of synagogal worship with them when they left Jerusalem around 600 BC. This essay revisits the most up to date scholarship regarding the origin of the …
Stretching To Find The Negative: Gary Bergera’S Review Of Joseph Smith’S Polygamy: History And Theology, Brian C. Hales
Stretching To Find The Negative: Gary Bergera’S Review Of Joseph Smith’S Polygamy: History And Theology, Brian C. Hales
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
At an author-meets-critic Sunstone Symposium on August 2, 2013, Gary Bergera devoted over 90% of his fifteenminute review to criticize my 1500+ page, three-volume, Joseph Smith’s Polygamy: History and Theology. This article responds to several of the disagreements outlined by Bergera that on closer inspection appear as straw men. Also addressed are the tired arguments buoyed by carefully selected documentation he advanced supporting that (1) John C. Bennett learned of polygamy from Joseph Smith, (2) the Fanny Alger-Joseph Smith relationship was adultery, and (3) the Prophet practiced sexual polyandry. This article attempts to provide greater balance by including new evidences …
Ainu Of Northern Japan, Evan Darrow
Ainu Of Northern Japan, Evan Darrow
Theses & ETDs
The Ainu have a unique place in the Modern Japanese State as the only non-Wajin, internal, indigenous ethnic group. At the same time, they share a common history with most indigenous groups, one of colonial domination. The start of this colonial endeavor by the Japanese state began, at the latest, in the sixteenth century C.E., and continues today. As a result of the colonial process, most Ainu have lower social, economic, and educational opportunities that the average Japanese citizen. To explore these points, this thesis analyzes the history of Japanese colonial policy through an Ainu context, and then explores the …

The Arguments And Data In Favor Of Minimum Grading, James Carifio, Theodore Carey
The Arguments And Data In Favor Of Minimum Grading, James Carifio, Theodore Carey
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
The arguments and for and against minimum grading systems have grown increasingly more intense and acrimonious in the past decade. However, there has been an absence of empirical data, theory and clear comparative analyses of conflicting points of view. Critics of minimum grading contend that the practice will produce grade inflation and social promotions of those students receiving minimum grades as the two chief arguments against minimum grading practices. In our retrospective study, we found no evidence of grade inflation or social promotion of those students receiving minimum grades in a large urban High School using a school-wide macro minimum …

Charism As Mission: A Marianist Model Of Ecclesiology, Johann G. Roten
Charism As Mission: A Marianist Model Of Ecclesiology, Johann G. Roten
Marian Library Studies
Much of what we call ecclesiology is in fact the history of trial and error in the pursuit of the Kingdom of God in this world. But there is more. Far from being purely clinical perception and assessment of things past and present, ecclesiology is a real life story, that of Jesus and those who attempt to follow him. Jesus is a person who really lived; the Church is the story of people who live their lives patterned on Jesus' person and work. The deeply existential and provisional character of Church, and the reflection about Church, cannot be downplayed or …

On Hearing (Rather Than Reading) Intertextual Echoes: Christology And Monotheistic Scriptures In An Oral Context, James F. Mcgrath
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
While recent studies of the New Testament have found the methods of intertextuality and orality studies to be fruitful approaches, there has been insufficient interplay between the two. This article explores the capacity of hearers of texts to pick up on echoes of familiar texts, stories, and songs. Using as an example Paul’s interpretation of Scripture in connection with the topics of monotheism and Christology, the article suggests that, in the absence of explicit and emphatic statements of the difference or distinctiveness of his views, Paul’s allusions to key monotheistic texts would have been understood to indicate Paul’s agreement with …

Review Of He Rode With Butch And Sundance: The Story Of Harvey “Kid Curry” Logan By Mark T. Smokov, Jeff Wells
Review Of He Rode With Butch And Sundance: The Story Of Harvey “Kid Curry” Logan By Mark T. Smokov, Jeff Wells
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Hollywood depictions of Harvey Alexander Logan (1867–1904), better known as “Kid Curry,” portray the outlaw as a dull-witted follower. Mark T. Smokov’s biography of Logan presents him instead as a crafty criminal with above-average intelligence. Smokov argues that Logan’s planning and executing three successful train robberies testifies to Kid Curry’s leadership and cunning.
He Rode with Butch and Sundance is Smokov’s first entry in the University of North Texas Press’s A. C. Greene Series. Logan’s career stretches the geographic boundaries of the series, as most of the books concentrate on crimes in Texas and the Southwest. Logan committed most of …
