Temporal And Spatial Changes In Beaver Pond Locations, Eastern Glacier National Park, Montana, U.S.A., Ross K. Meentemeyer, David R. Butler Feb 2025

Temporal And Spatial Changes In Beaver Pond Locations, Eastern Glacier National Park, Montana, U.S.A., Ross K. Meentemeyer, David R. Butler

The Geographical Bulletin

Sequential aerial photographs from 1966, 1973, 1984, and 1991 were used to map the number and distribution of beaver ponds in a portion of eastern Glacier National Park, Montana. The most stable ponds were located on deltaic environments. Ponds located on intermittent streams were somewhat less stable. A general equilibrium of pond number and site location exists in the study area throughoutthe 25-year period. This result contrasts with those from historical studies in eastern and central North America, where beaver populations at the turn of the century had probably been much lower than in Glacier National Park.

Defending The Doctrine Of Hell, Jordan P. Ballard Feb 2025

Defending The Doctrine Of Hell, Jordan P. Ballard

Liberty Theological Review

The doctrine of hell, or the final state of the wicked, has become one of the most objectionable Christian doctrines because it depicts God as vengeful and wrathful, which is offensive to human sensibilities. As an extension of the problem of evil, where God is put on trial for allowing what may appear to be gratuitous pain and suffering in the world, many Christians and non-Christians alike wonder how a loving God could consign people to suffering in hell forever. After all, why didn’t God make a world where all would be saved if He is truly loving? Belief in …

A Review Examining The Factors Contributory To The Socialization Of A Culture Of Environmental Stewardship, Colby Nixon Feb 2025

A Review Examining The Factors Contributory To The Socialization Of A Culture Of Environmental Stewardship, Colby Nixon

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Environmental stewardship is an ambiguous but significant term meaning that responsibility for the environment — and its quality — is shared between all individuals who interact with it. As a culture-wide phenomena, it is correlated with a mutualistic relationship with nature and the Earth. My study responds to a question as to which and how variables contribute to a societal mindset of environmental stewardship. This review synthesizes numerous studies across diverse cultures and contexts to examine trends therein. In doing so, I discovered that religion, policy, human development, linguistics, and economic roles play a part in socializing environmental stewardship into …

Editor’S Note: Want To Help Develop A Textbook On Comparative Civilizations?, Joseph Drew

Comparative Civilizations Review

Is anyone here in the United States or elsewhere teaching a course in the comparative study of civilizations at the undergraduate level these days?

Since I was thinking about organizing the writing of a textbook on the topic, I began recently by considering what the major areas were to be covered in such a book. What, I wondered, have been the significant approaches scholars have taken over the past century or so to address the fluid, debatable, tenuous meanings and shapes of civilizations?

Silver Tsunami Or Silver Rush? Extracting Value From Elders, Andrew Milne Feb 2025

Silver Tsunami Or Silver Rush? Extracting Value From Elders, Andrew Milne

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

I examine how the United States finances elder care, arguing that the legal processes structuring elder care tend to widen economic inequality and divide the interests of lower-income people against each other along generational, gendered, and racialized lines. I begin with two case narratives drawn from my practice experience as a poverty lawyer for older adults. One narrative involves an elder homeowner, while the other involves an elder renter. Both face crises of unmet care needs, the threat of homelessness, and ultimately the outcome that many older people dread most: institutionalization in a nursing home. I use these narratives as …

Irrigation And Society In The Upper Río Grande Basin, U.S.A: A Heritage Of Mutualism, José A. Rivera Ph.D

Faculty Publications

The acequias of the upper Río Grande are more than just irrigation canals. They also allocate and manage water for the community of landowners in the system. After four centuries of use, the acequias persist into modern times with their founding principles intact: self-government, local autonomy, internal rules for operating procedures, and a strong sense of mutualismo or communal responsibility. They have endured since Spanish colonial settlement and have maintained continuity of a water culture surviving political-administrative changes under three sovereigns, Spain (1598-1821), Mexico (1821-1848), and the United States (1848-Present). Despite stressors of climate variability, demographic changes, urbanization, and economic …

The History And Manifestations Of The Metaverse In Contemporary Literature, Marlon Semuel Contantin Kansil, Wanting Sun Jan 2025

The History And Manifestations Of The Metaverse In Contemporary Literature, Marlon Semuel Contantin Kansil, Wanting Sun

Journal of Strategic and Global Studies

The metaverse, an interactive and immersive virtual world, has emerged as a critical theme in contemporary literature, significantly impacting narratives and character development. This paper explores the history and literary manifestations of the metaverse, investigating its influence on identity, space, and social interactions. We find that the metaverse supports flexible and individualistic identities, reshaping how characters and readers understand themselves. The digital space of the metaverse provides a dynamic setting for moral and emotional conflicts, enriching the literary aesthetics of space. Furthermore, literature plays a crucial role in both shaping and reflecting the concept of the metaverse, employing symbolism and …

Local And Transregional Networks Of Women In Late Medieval Mecca And The Mamluk Empire, Mona Hafiz Jan 2025

Local And Transregional Networks Of Women In Late Medieval Mecca And The Mamluk Empire, Mona Hafiz

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the local and transregional networks of women in Mecca during the ninth/fifteenth century, as represented in the biographical dictionaries of al-Sakhāwī (d. 902/1497), Ibn Fahd (d. 885/1480), and al-Fāsī (d. 832/1429). It combines qualitative and quantitative methods in order to analyze the family, knowledge, and travels networks of women in late medieval Mecca and the Mamluk empire. It argues that Meccan women’s social and intellectual roles extended beyond their families, to other families, scholars, and regions. Simultaneously, the thesis focuses on Mecca as a central node in the networks that tied together different regions of the Mamluk …

Socially Learned Eating Pathology In African American Women (50+): A Narrative Inquiry, Patricia Ann Parker Jan 2025

Socially Learned Eating Pathology In African American Women (50+): A Narrative Inquiry, Patricia Ann Parker

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This qualitative narrative study explored the lived experiences of African American women aged 50 and older who self-reported eating pathology and body image dissatisfaction. Disordered eating behaviors, including starvation, binge eating, excessive dieting, and purging, often function as maladaptive coping mechanisms for managing stress, regulating emotions, or responding to traumatic events. The study contributed to the literature by capturing detailed narratives that traced the development of disordered eating behaviors and body image dissatisfaction from early life through adulthood and across the lifespan. Grounded in Albert Bandura’s social cognitive and social learning theories and intersectionality theories, the research employed a robust …

"Highly Value Employees": Interpreting The World War Ii History Of The Sioux Ordnance Depot, Tatiana Painter

History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Public historians strive to create relevant interpretative history for diverse audiences by finding connections between local history and national narratives. This thesis demonstrates how local historians can make history relevant to the public in the form of a digital exhibit that uses the stories of a western Nebraska military installation’s World War II employees. The Sioux Ordnance Depot was an ammunition storage site in Sidney, Nebraska, from 1942 to 1967. For over 25 years, the Depot’s mission was to receive, issue, and store Army ammunition, ammunition components, and general supplies, but little is known about the Depot and its employees …

A Greek Inscription From The Late Roman Period In Burial Cave 4 At Ben Shemen (Pp. 67–70), Leah Di Segni Jan 2025

A Greek Inscription From The Late Roman Period In Burial Cave 4 At Ben Shemen (Pp. 67–70), Leah Di Segni

'Atiqot

A Greek inscription, consisting of four lines, including the term “servants of Christ”, was found in a rock-hewn arcosolium burial cave (Cave 4) in Ben Shemen. The inscription was painted in red on a plastered section of the cave wall that had collapsed from above the eastern arcosolium. Based on palaeography, as well as the type of abbreviations used in the script, the tomb was used in the late third or early fourth centuries CE.

Pediatric Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma: Outcomes After Surgery Without Adjuvant Radioactive Iodine, Luz E Castellanos, Mark E Zafereo, Erich M Sturgis, Jennifer R Wang, Anita K Ying, Steven G Waguespack

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Context: Pediatric papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is usually treated with total thyroidectomy followed by radioactive iodine (RAI). Recently, RAI has been used more selectively based on surgical pathology and postoperative dynamic risk stratification (DRS).

Objective: To describe patients with pediatric PTC not initially treated with RAI and their disease outcomes.

Methods: This was an ambispective study at a tertiary cancer center of patients < 19 years diagnosed from January 1, 1990, to December 31, 2021, with stage 1 PTC who intentionally were not treated with RAI within a year of diagnosis. We assessed clinical characteristics, management, and disease outcomes using DRS.

Results: Of 490 PTC patients, we identified 93 eligible patients (median age at diagnosis 16 years; 87% female), including 46 (49%) with cervical lymph node metastases. Initial management included total thyroidectomy ± neck dissection (n = 69, …

Khan Gesher (Jisr El-Majami‘), Abdullah Mokary, Zvi Gal Jan 2025

Khan Gesher (Jisr El-Majami‘), Abdullah Mokary, Zvi Gal

'Atiqot

Khan Gesher is one of the earliest khans in Galilee. Three periods of occupation were documented at the site. The khan was first built during the Mamluk period as a square complex, with a central courtyard surrounded by rooms and halls. The halls served as stables, and the rooms and the central courtyard served non-residential functions, e.g., a gate, a water system, and a prayer room. Thus, the khan might have had a second story for housing travelers. During the Ottoman period, the building underwent changes and modifications. The khan was probably destroyed in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth …

Bauchi State was among the States that re-introduced Sharia as part of its legal system. Based on that, Sharia Courts were created to replace Area Courts, and Sharia Courts Civil Procedure Rules was enacted to regulate the proceedings before the said Sharia Courts on Civil Matters. The Bauchi State Sharia Courts Civil Procedure Rules, 2001 did not contain a provision on Khul’i. Prior to the amendment of Bauchi State Sharia Courts Civil Procedure …

Suburbanization As A Post-Industrial Essentiality: Revisiting Sweden's Miljonprogrammet, Colin Wood Jan 2025

Suburbanization As A Post-Industrial Essentiality: Revisiting Sweden's Miljonprogrammet, Colin Wood

Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal

Definitively speaking, suburbanization does not equate to post-industrialism in the same limelight as would urbanization and industrialism. However, anomalous cases, such as the one being discussed in this paper, tangentially interlink on a socioeconomic basis. In 1965, Sweden began construction of the Miljonprogrammet (Million Programme), where over the next ten years, over one million domiciles were built in a suburban setting leading to a mass diaspora of ‘slum living’ Swedish industrial workers. The nation’s renowned welfare state, built on a collaborative system between public and private sectors as well as federal and municipal actors, overlooked housing in its social …

A Written Dissertation Of A History Of The Ethnic Identity Of The Irish Child Laborers In Saint Louis, Missouri: 1890-1930, Deserea A. Morse

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The study of child labor helps us better understand the connection between labor, ethnicity, and crime within America. Throughout this dissertation, there will be a closer look into the influence that child labor has had on the growth of this nation. It also grants a look into the design of society within Progressive America and gives a voice to the story of the child laborer and his experiences. Currently, there is an ever-changing debate on the role child labor played within American history, specifically between the years 1910-1930. This period of years is critical as it signals when reform programs …
