Native Diasporas, Gregory D. Smithers, Brooke N. Newman Jan 2014

Native Diasporas, Gregory D. Smithers, Brooke N. Newman

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

The arrival of European settlers in the Americas disrupted indigenous lifeways, and the effects of colonialism shattered Native communities. Forced migration and human trafficking created a diaspora of cultures, languages, and people. Gregory D. Smithers and Brooke N. Newman have gathered the work of leading scholars, including Bill Anthes, Duane Champagne, Daniel Cobb, Donald Fixico, and Joy Porter, among others, in examining an expansive range of Native peoples and the extent of their influences through reaggregation. These diverse and wide-ranging essays uncover indigenous understandings of self-identification, community, and culture through the speeches, cultural products, intimate relations, and political and legal …

Gifts From The Thunder Beings, Roland Bohr Jan 2014

Gifts From The Thunder Beings, Roland Bohr

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Gifts from the Thunder Beings examines North American Aboriginal peoples’ use of Indigenous and European distance weapons in big-game hunting and combat. Beyond the capabilities of European weapons, Aboriginal peoples’ ways of adapting and using this technology in combination with Indigenous weaponry contributed greatly to the impact these weapons had on Aboriginal cultures. This gradual transition took place from the beginning of the fur trade in the Hudson’s Bay Company trading territory to the treaty and reserve period that began in Canada in the 1870s.

Technological change and the effects of European contact were not uniform throughout North America, as …

Vietnam And The Colonial Condition Of French Literature, Leslie Barnes Jan 2014

Vietnam And The Colonial Condition Of French Literature, Leslie Barnes

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Vietnam and the Colonial Condition of French Literature explores an aspect of modern French literature that has been consistently overlooked in literary histories: the relationship between the colonies—their cultures, languages, and people—and formal shifts in French literary production. Starting from the premise that neither cultural identity nor cultural production can be pure or homogenous, Leslie Barnes initiates a new discourse on the French literary canon by examining the work of three iconic French writers with personal connections to Vietnam: André Malraux, Marguerite Duras, and Linda Lê. In a thorough investigation of the authors’ linguistic, metaphysical, and textual experiences of colonialism, …

Attempting An Affirmative Approach To American Broadcasting: Ideology, Politics, And The Public Telecommunications Facilities Program, Michael W. Huntsberger Jan 2014

Attempting An Affirmative Approach To American Broadcasting: Ideology, Politics, And The Public Telecommunications Facilities Program, Michael W. Huntsberger

Faculty Publications

The Public Telecommunications Facilities Program (PTFP) was the largest source of capital funding for U.S. public broadcasters for nearly fifty years. Between 1963 and 2010, the PTFP distributed more than $800 million to support the construction of public broadcasting facilities. Though the PTFP itself was generally noncontroversial, the fortunes of the program were complicated by the partisan politics of public broadcasting and federal fiscal policy. This study provides evidence of the ambiguous and contingent nature of the American approach to public broadcasting, and demonstrates some of the problems associated with affirmative efforts by government to advance public communication.

Going Mobile: Political Careers And Institutional Power In The European Commission, Zachary Arace Jan 2014

Going Mobile: Political Careers And Institutional Power In The European Commission, Zachary Arace

Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union

The European Commission is arguably the most powerful component of today’s European Union, yet little is understood about who actually comprises the Commission and how they get to Brussels. Scholars have thus far focused on piecemeal studies of backgrounds of Commissioners, legislative approaches to Commission recruitment, or spatial models of multilevel governance systems (among others). In contrast, this paper takes a comprehensive approach to understanding paths to the Commission. To support this approach, a large-N data set of both institutional and personal (i.e., biographies and career histories) data of all Commissioners appointed since 2010 is constructed. This data set is …

Beyond The Walls: Walled Cities Of Medieval France: The Preservation Of Heritage And Cultural Memory At Carcassonne, Aigues-Mortes, And La Rochelle, Emily Huber Jan 2014

Beyond The Walls: Walled Cities Of Medieval France: The Preservation Of Heritage And Cultural Memory At Carcassonne, Aigues-Mortes, And La Rochelle, Emily Huber

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

This project began with the intention of understanding the modern significance of medieval walled cities in France; some were torn down, some remain in pieces, and some were perfectly restored. By researching the histories of three cases studies, Carcassonne, Aigues-Mortes, and La Rochelle, as well as their current architectural states and tourist statistics, I have come to the conclusion that walled cities are preserved by the French as heritage sites in order to promote their cultural memory. Walled cities were once economic centers of trade as well as hot spots for conflict. The histories of Carcassonne, Aigues-Mortes, and La Rochelle …

Big Trouble In River City: American Crucifixion And The Defaming Of Joseph Smith, Craig L. Foster, Brian C. Hales Jan 2014

Big Trouble In River City: American Crucifixion And The Defaming Of Joseph Smith, Craig L. Foster, Brian C. Hales

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

On April 22, 2014, PublicAffairs, an imprint of a national publisher Persues Books Group, released American Crucifixion: The Murder of Joseph Smith and the Fate of the Mormon Church, authored by Alex Beam. Beam, who openly declared he entered the project without personal biases against Joseph Smith or the Latter-day Saints, spent a couple of years researching his work, which he declares to be “popular non-fiction” and therefore historically accurate. This article challenges both of these assertions, showing that Beam was highly prejudiced against the Church prior to investigating and writing about events leading up to the martyrdom. In addition, …

A Response To Grant Palmer’S “Sexual Allegations Against Joseph Smith And The Beginnings Of Polygamy In Nauvoo”, Brian C. Hales, Gregory L. Smith Jan 2014

A Response To Grant Palmer’S “Sexual Allegations Against Joseph Smith And The Beginnings Of Polygamy In Nauvoo”, Brian C. Hales, Gregory L. Smith

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Grant H. Palmer, former LDS seminary instructor turned critic, has recently posted an essay, “Sexual Allegations against Joseph Smith and the Beginnings of Polygamy in Nauvoo,” on MormonThink.com. In it, Palmer isolates ten in teractions between women and Joseph Smith that Palmer alleges were inappropriate and, “have at least some plausibility of being true.” In this paper, Palmer’s analysis of these ten interactions is reviewed, revealing how poorly Palmer has represented the his torical data by advancing factual inaccuracies, quoting sources without establishing their credibility, ignoring contradictory evi dences, and manifesting superficial research techniques that fail to account for the …

Gender Mainstreaming In Journalism Education, Margaretha Geertsema-Sligh Jan 2014

Gender Mainstreaming In Journalism Education, Margaretha Geertsema-Sligh

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

In a time of swift technological changes in the news media, much of journalism education is focused on preparing students for careers in a new media landscape instead of focusing on gender or other diversity issues. For example, Pavlik (2013, p.213) argued in a recent article that a curriculum that ‘emphasized innovation and digital media entrepreneurship is one of the keys to a robust professional future for the field and students seeking a media career’. Even so, Pavlik (2013, p.217) recognised that most programmes in media education are holding on to an outdated professional model of journalism and mass communication, …

The History Manifesto, Jo Guldi Jan 2014

The History Manifesto, Jo Guldi

History Faculty Publications

How should historians speak truth to power -- and why does it matter? Why is five hundred years better than five months or five years as a planning horizon? And why is history -- especially long-term history -- so essential to understanding the multiple pasts which give rise to our conflicted present? The History Manifesto is a call to arms to historians and everyone interested in the role of history in contemporary society.

Parenting: What's It Like For Black Fathers With Nonresident Children?, Katrina Ann Romaine Akande Jan 2014

Parenting: What's It Like For Black Fathers With Nonresident Children?, Katrina Ann Romaine Akande

Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences

The demands on fathers to be more involved with their children have steadily been increasing since the 1970s. However, fathers have received less attention in the social science literature compared to mothers. This difference is evident regarding the parenting practices of ethnic minority fathers such as nonresident Black fathers. This dissertation investigates the effects of nonresident Black fathers’ perceptions of the coparenting relationship and coparenting support on their perceived father involvement and their perceived paternal stressors; while testing the mediating effects of maternal gatekeeping. The dissertation is presented in a three manuscript-style format with the intent to publish each manuscript …

Boycotts To Bombs: History, Causes, And Comparison Of The Palestinian Intifadas, Leah Wilson Jan 2014

Boycotts To Bombs: History, Causes, And Comparison Of The Palestinian Intifadas, Leah Wilson

Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection

One of the foremost geopolitical issues of the twenty first century, the conflict between Israel and Palestine has a complicated, ominous history, and limited signs of hope for resolution in the near future. Darkened by particularly bloody and significant events such as the 1948 Arab-Israel dispute, the 1967 Six Day War, and the continuously violent actions taken near the turn of the century, the conflict continues to detrimentally impact the security of the region, the socioeconomic livelihood of Palestinians, and the dwindling influence of international actors to curb recognizably illegal settlements and flagrant human rights violations. Particularly significant to the …

European Union And African Union: A Study Of Regionalism For Global Integration And Development, Soji Oyeranmi Jan 2014

European Union And African Union: A Study Of Regionalism For Global Integration And Development, Soji Oyeranmi

Journal for the Advancement of Developing Economies

Scholars of international political economy have made remarkable inroad into the study of comparative integration endeavors across the globe. For examples, over the last few years, comparative studies of the North Atlantic Free Trade Area (NAFTA) and the European Union (EU) had been undertaken to reveal the factors that facilitated the success of each organization in their integration efforts at the regional level. Also a comparative study of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the European Union has also been undertaken. However, very little effort has been made to reveal the impact or power of regionalism on African development. …

Producing A Past: Cyrus Mccormick's Reaper From Heritage To History, Daniel Peter Ott Jan 2014

Producing A Past: Cyrus Mccormick's Reaper From Heritage To History, Daniel Peter Ott

Dissertations

"Producing a Past" explores how the false "fact" of Cyrus McCormick's 1831 invention of the reaper came to be incorporated into the American historical cannon. From 1884 to 1932, the McCormick Harvester family and their various affiliated businesses created a useable past about their departed patriarch, Cyrus McCormick, and his role in producing civilization through advertising and the emerging historical profession. The McCormick narrative of the past which was peddled in advertising and supported in scholarship justified the family's elite position in American society and its monopolistic control of the harvester industry in the face of political and popular antagonism. …

The Constitutional Standing Of Corporations, Brandon L. Garrett Jan 2014

The Constitutional Standing Of Corporations, Brandon L. Garrett

Faculty Scholarship

Are corporations “persons” with constitutional rights? The Supreme Court has famously avoided analysis of the question, while recognizing that corporations may litigate rights under the Due Process Clause, Equal Protection Clause, First Amendment, Fourth Amendment, Sixth Amendment, and Seventh Amendment, but not, for example, the Self-Incrimination Clause of the Fifth Amendment. What theory explains why corporations may litigate some constitutional rights and not others? In this Article, I argue that the doctrine of Article III standing supplies an underlying general theory by requiring a judge to ask: does the organization suffer a concrete constitutional injury to its legal interests? Such …

Impact Of Positive And Negative Health Behaviors On Female Mice And/Or Their Offspring, Kristen M. Platt Jan 2014

Impact Of Positive And Negative Health Behaviors On Female Mice And/Or Their Offspring, Kristen M. Platt

Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences

Obesity is an ever-growing concern in the developed world that carries with it a plethora of health issues. For example, obesity increases an individual’s risk for Type 2 Diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Pregnancy is a vital time for a woman to maintain optimal health, both for her own benefit as well as that of her offspring, and yet almost half of women in the United States who are of age to bear children are overweight or obese. In mice, we found that offspring born to dams fed a high fat diet did not have impaired glucose tolerance, contrary to our …

An Evaluation Of Literature Related To The Phenomenon Of Building Shrines Within The Residence Compound Among Malaysian Indians, H. Arumugam, M. Subramaniam Jan 2014

An Evaluation Of Literature Related To The Phenomenon Of Building Shrines Within The Residence Compound Among Malaysian Indians, H. Arumugam, M. Subramaniam

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Hindus possess their own unique religious beliefs and practices and they have been inherited from one generation to another for centuries. Yet the religious beliefs and practices of Hindus living in India varies from that of Hindus living elsewhere or outside India. The best exemplification of the differences is the religious practice of Malaysian Hindus as they have introduced a new trend in the Hindu religious practice by building shrines for deities within their residence compound. It is a new phenomenon amongst the Malaysian Hindu community and also it is envisaged as a problem in the nation as most shrines …
