Melodic Function And Modal Process In Gregorian Chant, Richard Porterfield Feb 2014

Melodic Function And Modal Process In Gregorian Chant, Richard Porterfield

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study proposes a theory and method of analysis for voice leading in the melody of Gregorian chant. It draws on historical theories and practices, particularly those of the cantus tradition which 1) pre-dates the imposition on Western ecclesiastical chant of scale theories based in the Ancient Greek science of harmonics, 2) observes and predicts actual melodic behavior, and 3) remains basic to pedagogy through the centuries. Central to cantus-tradition doctrine is the investment of melodic tones with structural functions which articulate modes as melodic archetypes; idiomelic antiphons are analyzed according to five melodic functions derived from formulaic psalmody …

Reviving Enlightenment In The Age Of Nationalism: The Historical And Political Thought Of Hans Kohn In America, Brian Matthew Smollett Feb 2014

Reviving Enlightenment In The Age Of Nationalism: The Historical And Political Thought Of Hans Kohn In America, Brian Matthew Smollett

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation critically engages the thought of Hans Kohn (1891-1971). One of the most prominent theorists of nationalism in the twentieth century, Kohn has primarily been studied as an anti-statist Zionist thinker and as the originator of a Western-Civic/Eastern-Ethnic "dichotomy" of national development. This work takes a different approach by analyzing the matrix of tension between particularism and universalism in his mature, American thought. I argue that Kohn, especially in response to the crisis of fascism, used history to search for a balance within this perennial tension. His historical analyses, very much tied to his time and context, led him …

Reading The Restaurant: Social Class, Identity, And The Culture Of Consumption In The Nineteenth Century French Novel, Joseph J.B. Rienti Feb 2014

Reading The Restaurant: Social Class, Identity, And The Culture Of Consumption In The Nineteenth Century French Novel, Joseph J.B. Rienti

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The restaurant, like so many of the institutions of French modern society, developed at a very particular moment in history. In this project, I tell the story of the maturation of the restaurant and study its unique role in the social history of Paris during the nineteenth century. By examining the restaurant as a site of modernity, I illuminate its important role in precipitating class distinctions, locating the emerging consumer culture, highlighting gender differentiation, challenging prevailing views of domesticity, and revealing a debate over public and private space.

Through a close reading of the realist novel as a discourse on …

Performing Modernity In Turkey: Conflicts Of Masculinity, Sexuality, And The Köçek Dancer, Brittany Giselle Haynes Feb 2014

Performing Modernity In Turkey: Conflicts Of Masculinity, Sexuality, And The Köçek Dancer, Brittany Giselle Haynes

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis reexamines the history of the köçek dancer in Turkey and thereby opens modern heteronormative constructs of masculinity and sexuality to contestation, particularly as they have been symbolically embodied by the rural population of Anatolia. It traces the evolution of the köçek dancer from the early modern Ottoman Empire when the dancer embodied notions of divine love and the ideal of beauty as a young male object of adult men's desires. In the nineteenth century, perceptions of the köçek began to change, primarily among Ottoman elites, whose modernization efforts were influenced by the European gaze and travelers' Orientalist interpretations …

The Institutional Speech Or Debate Protection: Nondisclosure As Separation Of Powers, Ethan L. Carroll Feb 2014

The Institutional Speech Or Debate Protection: Nondisclosure As Separation Of Powers, Ethan L. Carroll

Duke Law Journal

The Speech or Debate Clause encompasses certain privileges that inure to the benefit of legislators. But its nondisclosure protection secures legislative—not legislators'—independence. This nondisclosure protection provides Congress as an institution the procedural right to assert its interests prior to the executive branch's compelling the disclosure of legislative acts and corresponding documentary materials. Reading the opinion of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in United States v. Rayburn House Office Building as a separation-of-powers case distinguishes this institutional, procedural protection from a so-called "nondisclosure privilege" against any compelled disclosure, which was rejected by the U.S. Court of Appeals …

Economic Diversity, Growth, And Development In Early Nineteenth Century Connecticut, Kristen Noble Keegan Jan 2014

Economic Diversity, Growth, And Development In Early Nineteenth Century Connecticut, Kristen Noble Keegan

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation tests an important hypothesis about early nineteenth-century economic development: that higher levels of municipal economic diversity at an early stage of development can serve as predictors of long-term success. The study period of 1810 to 1850 includes the beginnings of industrialization and urbanization in southern New England, and is based upon the Connecticut Grand List of taxable property, which was collected at the level of the municipality (the basic unit of government in the state). Analyses of these data sought to identify patterns of concentration using the location quotient and focal location quotient, Getis-Ord Gi* statistic …

The Journals Of Reba Booth, First Lds Sister Missionary To The Middle East, Laura R. Ostler, Dr. James A. Toronto

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Even before September 11, 2001 exploded the region onto global consciousness, the Middle East had a special fascination for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Church doctrine ties modern Saints with ancient Israel. The “gathering of Israel” is a topic commonly discussed in formal and informal LDS gatherings. In fact, this interest has existed since the Church began; a Latter-day Saint dedicated the Holy Land only a few years after the Church was officially organized.

Portrait Of A Negress: Post-Colonial Studies Of A Black Female Subject, Abby Beal, Dr. Martha Peacock Jan 2014

Portrait Of A Negress: Post-Colonial Studies Of A Black Female Subject, Abby Beal, Dr. Martha Peacock

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The painting Portrait of a Negress completed in 1800 is a rare piece for its time. The painting is unique because of its isolation of a rare subject for art—the black woman. Not only is the subject rare, but also the painting gains more interest because the artist was a woman herself— uncommon in France in the 1800s. Traditionally, the connection between a painter and a black subject at this time can be seen as a colonial ownership over the black visual. However, the connection between the woman artist, Marie Benoist, and her black female subject in this painting is …

The Council House As A House For Sacred Ordinances In The Early Church, Gil Bradshaw, Dr. Fred E. Woods Jan 2014

The Council House As A House For Sacred Ordinances In The Early Church, Gil Bradshaw, Dr. Fred E. Woods

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With no available temples wherein they could perform their endowments, early Saints performed endowments for the living in various other places. For example, when Church members first entered the Salt Lake valley, their early endowments were performed on top of Ensign Peak. This was a special exception for missionaries returning from the South Pacific who missed the Nauvoo era completely1. For this paper I concentrated on the Council House as a similar temple substitute. Though not a temple, between its construction in 1850 and its eventual destruction in 1883, the Council House on Temple Square served as Utah’s first established …

Education Papers and Journal Articles

This article examines a service-learning immersion undertaken by pre-service primary teachers in a remote indigenous community and school in Western Australia. The article initially presents the purpose and significance for the immersion in the light of the Australian National Professional Standards for Teachers. The article subsequently outlines the aims and structure of the immersion program. The qualitative methodology underpinning the research is then summarised. Specifically, data were collected pre-immersion (focus group interview and guided journal writing), during the immersion (guided journal writing) and post immersion (focus group interview). Student reflections generated four themes: personal development, professional knowledge, cultural awareness, and …

Mission At And From The Margins: Patterns, Protagonists And Perspectives, Peniel Jesudason, Rufus Rajkumar, Joseph Prabhakar Dayam, I. P. Asheervadham

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

This volume revisits the 'hi-stories' of Mission from the 'bottom up' paying critical attention to people, perspectives and patterns that have often been elided in the construction of mission history. Focusing on the mission story of Christian churches in the South Indian state of Abdhra Pradesh, where Christianity is predominantly Dalit in its composition, this collection of essays, ushers its readers to re-shape their understanding of the landscape of mission history by drawing their attention to the silences and absences within pre-dominant historical accounts.

Trust As A Key Variable Of Sustainable Development And Public Happiness: A Historical And Theoretical Example Regarding The Creation Of Money, Nicola Genovese, Maria Grazia La Spada Jan 2014

Trust As A Key Variable Of Sustainable Development And Public Happiness: A Historical And Theoretical Example Regarding The Creation Of Money, Nicola Genovese, Maria Grazia La Spada

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This article purports to trace the origin of money on the basis of factors in interpersonal relationships, affecting a sustainable development and public happiness, namely trust, reciprocity and the concept of we-rationality. Both the historical approach and the one based on traditional economic theory have been found inadequate mainly because they did not take into account these factors. The hypothesis expounded in the paper is that these values underlaid the beginning of economic activity. Initially economic activity was carried out within small human groups. In such groups interpersonal relations were not based on individual self-interest. As a matter of fact, …

Intensive Archeological Survey For The Proposed Widening Of Cr 110 From Us 79 To Sam Houston Avenue In Williamson County, Texas, Timothy B. Griffith, Joseph M. Sanchez Jan 2014

Intensive Archeological Survey For The Proposed Widening Of Cr 110 From Us 79 To Sam Houston Avenue In Williamson County, Texas, Timothy B. Griffith, Joseph M. Sanchez

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Between July 21 and 25, 2014, Blanton & Associates, Inc. (B&A), at the request of Williamson County, conducted an intensive archeological survey (as per 13 TAC 26.20 and 26.5) of 6.5 miles of proposed improvements along County Road (CR) 110 near the City of Hutto in Williamson County, Texas. The 100 percent visual inspection, augmented by strategically placed shovel tests and backhoe trenches, was negative for cultural resources within the proposed project area. Based on these data, B&A recommends that the proposed improvements to County Road (CR) 110 in Williamson County, Texas, be allowed to proceed as planned without additional …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

F rom 2011 through 2014, the Texas Department of Transportation collaborated with Prewitt and Associates, Inc., to investigate an isolated grave in a remote area alongside FM 481 in Maverick County, Texas. An initial archeological investigation confirmed that the location was a historic grave, and archival records revealed that it contained the remains of Salvador Camarena, a Mexican citizen who died in Texas in January 1950. Additional research identified Camarena’s son and other family members living in Mexico, California, and Texas. With the family’s permission, the burial remains were exhumed, examined, and reinterred at La Marque Cemetery in Galveston County, …

The Relevance Of Benjamin Franklin's And Thomas Jefferson's Technical Writing For Modern Communicators, Kristin Fecko Jan 2014

The Relevance Of Benjamin Franklin's And Thomas Jefferson's Technical Writing For Modern Communicators, Kristin Fecko

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today's technical communicators enjoy an increasingly broader role and influence in the workplace, and are often given latitude to use engaging rhetoric and personal touches in many kinds of communications. Historical documents, particularly those that are substantially removed from our own era, can offer fresh approaches and insight into the enduring elements of successful communication. This study explores the technical writings of Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson and considers their usefulness to professionals today. Although the political writing of Franklin and Jefferson is more familiar, both men frequently wrote about scientific and technical subjects and were well-known in their day …
