Origins Of Music Programs In Liberal Arts Institutions: The Story Of Three Florida Catholic Universities, Cynthia S. Selph
Origins Of Music Programs In Liberal Arts Institutions: The Story Of Three Florida Catholic Universities, Cynthia S. Selph
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the music programs in liberal arts colleges through the historical lens of three Catholic Universities in the state of Florida. Although there are numerous historical dissertations and theses written about individual music schools and departments, and a few that compare music programs in similar types of institutions, none have compared music programs in Catholic universities within the same state. After teaching at Saint Leo University and experiencing the process of rebuilding a music program after it was almost completely lost in the mid-1990s, I wanted to study the histories of Saint Leo and other Florida Catholic institutions …
Applying Gps And Accelerometers To The Study Of African Savanna (Loxodonta Africana) And Asian Elephant (Elephas Maximus) Welfare In Zoos, Matthew Robert Holdgate
Applying Gps And Accelerometers To The Study Of African Savanna (Loxodonta Africana) And Asian Elephant (Elephas Maximus) Welfare In Zoos, Matthew Robert Holdgate
Dissertations and Theses
African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana) and Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) are a focus of welfare research in zoos due to their high intelligence, complex social structure, and sheer size. Due to these challenges, some argue that zoos are inherently incapable of providing appropriate care for elephants, while others believe that zoos can fulfill the needs of these species with improved husbandry. There is a general consensus from both within and outside of zoos, however, that zoos must improve their elephant programs or cease exhibiting these animals altogether. Now more than ever, applied research on zoo elephant welfare is needed to …
Contextualizing The Writings Of J.R.R. Tolkien On Literary Criticism, Sherrylyn Branchaw
Contextualizing The Writings Of J.R.R. Tolkien On Literary Criticism, Sherrylyn Branchaw
Journal of Tolkien Research
This essay offers a reinterpretation of Tolkien's writings about literary criticism, which are focused on Beowulf, fairy stories, and his own works. Whereas his writings have often been taken to mean that analytic scholarship is not valid and should not be pursued, my essay takes the intellectual climate of the time into consideration and offers an alternative interpretation, according to which he did not mean to forbid these studies outright and indeed intended that scholars should continue writing them. The essay ends with a call to academics not to be discouraged by his strong language from producing analytic studies.

Chow Yiu Sin
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
Zhaopeng Wang
Zhaopeng Wang
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Xi Jin
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
Chunhong Wang
Chunhong Wang
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies
Yinchi Chen, Te Chen
Yinchi Chen, Te Chen
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

Shaokang Zhang
Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies

"Developing an Image-Based Classifier for Detecting Poetic Content in Historic Newspaper Collections" details and analyzes the first stage of work of the Image Analysis for Archival Discovery project team. Our team is is investigating the use of image analysis to identify poetic content in historic newspapers. The project seeks both to augment the study of literary history by drawing attention to the magnitude of poetry published in newspapers and by making the poetry more readily available for study, as well as to advance work on the use of digital images in facilitating discovery in digital libraries and other digitized collections. …

Do The Right Thing: Understanding The Interest-Convergence Thesis, Stephen Matthew Feldman
Do The Right Thing: Understanding The Interest-Convergence Thesis, Stephen Matthew Feldman
Faculty Articles
Professor Derrick Bell was one of the most influential constitutional scholars of the last fifty years His insights spurred civil rights scholars as well as thinkers in other fields One of his most important legacies is the interestconvergence thesis which asserts that historically African Americans gained social justice primarily when their interests converged with the interests of the white majority In a recently published article Rethinking the InterestConvergence Thesis Professor Justin Driver calls this legacy into question This Essay defends the interestconvergence thesis from Driver's attack It argues that the analytical flaws he identifies only exist by dint of his …

Sumpong Spirit Beliefs, Murder, And Religious Change Among Eighteenth-Century Aeta And Ilongot In Eastern Central Luzon, Mark; Ateneo Dizon
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
In common usage and in psychology sumpong is considered a deviant and irrational behavior. Thisarticle makes sense of sumpong by putting it in the historical context of animism, specifically that of the eighteenth-century Aeta and Ilongot of eastern Central Luzon. As a form of perception, feeling, and action, sumpong was temporally flat since past, present, and future did not succeed one another in linear fashion. Based on historical dictionaries and usage, thisarticle explores the role of sumpong as an affective and culturally intelligible way of understanding and acting in the animist world as seen in cases of murder and religious …

Number 2 - The Role Of Western Democratic System Of Governance In Exacerbating Ethnic Conflicts In Africa: The Case Of Ghana's Democratic Dispensation, 1992-2012, David Kwasi Bansah
Peace and Conflict Management Working Papers Series
This paper interrogates the influence of Western forms of democracy on ethnic conflicts in Africa through a case study of Ghana’s adoption of multiparty democracy between 1992 and 2012. It discusses the transition of African traditional systems of government before, during, and after colonization. The paper also shows how democracy, by definition and in terms of governance, cannot solely be a Western idea since many African societies had democratic elements in their systems of government before the arrival of the Europeans. Relying on qualitative secondary data, and the analysis of fierce and acrimonious competition that have characterized multiparty democratic elections …
Learning To Be Quaker: Spiritual Formation And Religious Education Among Early Friends, Martha Paxson Grundy
Learning To Be Quaker: Spiritual Formation And Religious Education Among Early Friends, Martha Paxson Grundy
Quaker Studies
The theology and lifestyle that grew from Friends' transforming experience of'primitive Christianity revived' differed from the dominant culture, exacting a high cost. Relying on early Friends' writing, this article examines how this new paradigm was transmitted. Friends summarized the basis of their faith with the phrase 'Christ is come to teach his people himself' (Benson 1968: 36; 1976: 3; Cooper 1990: 2; Freiday 1984: 4; Grundy 2002b: 11-13, 15, 17). In the 1650s and 1660s most people who became Friends were first worked on internally by the Holy Spirit. When they heard a Quaker preach, the words reached to the …

Guadalupe San Miguel’s Chicana/o Struggles for Education: Activism in the Community is the seventh book in the University of Houston Series in Mexican American Studies. The author provides a historical overview of the multiple strategies and methods that Mexican American activists, organizations, and like-minded individuals employed in order to obtain not only quality education but also culturally relevant and religious education for Mexican-origin students from the 1960s to 2010. San Miguel focuses on this period in order to show how Mexican American education evolved in the post–Civil Rights era and how different groups pushed for educational reforms to achieve their …
