Structural Influences On Intensity Interferometry Correlation, Mark Harris Sep 2015

Structural Influences On Intensity Interferometry Correlation, Mark Harris

Civil Engineering ETDs

Pairing the information received from multiple telescopes to explore the universe is typically based on the interference phenomenon between amplitudes of light, rather their intensities. Brighter sources and larger telescopes allow for greater amounts of light to be collected, but do not specifically involve the intensity interference of electromagnetic fields. There is an alternate form of creating images of distant objects called Intensity Interferometry (II), which is less sensitive to atmospheric distortions and aberrations of telescope surfaces. The deficiencies of II are overcome as photo detectors become more sensitive and computers more powerful. In recognition of this possibility this dissertation …

The Print Portfolio And The Bourgeoisie In Fin-De-Siècle Paris, Britany Lane Salsbury Sep 2015

The Print Portfolio And The Bourgeoisie In Fin-De-Siècle Paris, Britany Lane Salsbury

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In fin-de-siècle Paris, the print portfolio experienced a popularity that was unprecedented over the course of its long history. Adapted sporadically by graphic artists from the Renaissance onward, prints were produced as series in greater numbers and by a wider range of artists than ever before between 1880 and 1900, and symbolized new, bold, and varied aspirations for the graphic arts as an original and experimental medium. In addition to its stylistic value, artists valued the print portfolio for the subject matter it could cultivate. A growing number of works produced at this time highlighted social issues and expressed political …

Capturing Early Arkansas In Depth: A History Of 19th Century Arkansas Through The Visual Medium Of Stereo Photography, Hattie Felton Aug 2015

Capturing Early Arkansas In Depth: A History Of 19th Century Arkansas Through The Visual Medium Of Stereo Photography, Hattie Felton

Theses and Dissertations

Before motion pictures and color photographs, stereoscopic photography captured the attention of millions. These affordable 3-D images created a phenomenon that spanned the last half of the nineteenth century, bridged demographic and socioeconomic gaps and provoked discussions about the nature of science and art. Unlike traditional studio photographers, stereo photographers took their cameras outdoors to capture life as it occurred, giving a documentary quality to many of the images. This thesis explores stereo photography as a primary source for studying the 1800s. In Arkansas, these views are a window into the growth of a young state, early tourism, railroad expansion …

Out Of The Silence, The Men Of Naujan Speak: Tagalog Texts From The Seventeenth Century, Damon L. Woods Aug 2015

Out Of The Silence, The Men Of Naujan Speak: Tagalog Texts From The Seventeenth Century, Damon L. Woods

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

From Naujan on the island Mindoro in the seventeenth-century Spanish Philippines emerged two petitions written in Tagalog and addressed to the archbishop of Manila, asking for the continued presence of Jesuits replacing the secular priests assigned there. A close examination of the texts points to the resident Jesuit as the force behind these petitions. Thearticle argues that, apart from refracting the conflict between the regular and secular clergy over the control of parishes, these documents recognize the agency of the men who signed it. Also explored are the question of the documents’ survival and the rewriting of history using materials …

Caribou Migration, Subsistence Hunting, And User Group Conflicts In Northwest Alaska: A Traditional Knowledge Perspective, Gabriela Halas Aug 2015

Caribou Migration, Subsistence Hunting, And User Group Conflicts In Northwest Alaska: A Traditional Knowledge Perspective, Gabriela Halas

Natural Resources

Alaska Natives of northwest Alaska are highly dependent on barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus) for meeting their nutritional and cultural needs. The Alaska Native village of Noatak borders the Noatak National Preserve (NNP), an area historically and presently used by Iñupiaq for subsistence caribou hunting and other traditional activities. Interactions between local and non-local caribou hunters were analyzed through the lens of common pool resource theory, which I linked to traditional Iñupiaq management of access and use of resources. This study examined changes in caribou migration and its effect on local caribou hunting success, which have been perceived to be the …

Contemporary Mesozooplankton Communities Of The Beaufort Sea, Caitlin A. Smoot Aug 2015

Contemporary Mesozooplankton Communities Of The Beaufort Sea, Caitlin A. Smoot

Marine Biology

Zooplankton are critical trophic links and important modifiers of organic carbon cycles, yet are poorly characterized for much of the Arctic's Beaufort Sea, particularly in mesopelagic (> 200 m) waters. Zooplankton were sampled with 150 and 505 μm mesh nets in the upper 200 m in sections of the Beaufort Sea between Barrow Canyon and the Mackenzie River during August and September 2010-2013 to characterize the species composition, abundance, and biomass of epipelagic Beaufort Sea zooplankton communities. I observed 106 taxonomic zooplankton categories during four field seasons across both mesh sizes; copepods exhibited the highest species richness (38 species), followed …

'Grounding' Walter Rodney In Critical Pedagogy: Toward Praxis In African History, Seneca Vaught Aug 2015

'Grounding' Walter Rodney In Critical Pedagogy: Toward Praxis In African History, Seneca Vaught

South

This essay attempts to address the dilemma of theory and praxis, what Freire referred to as “mere verbalism,” by examining one historical instance of critical pedagogy in history education. This essay argues that Walter Rodney’s curriculum, as detailed in his syllabi on “Historians and Revolutions” and "Groundings," helps educators better understand how to more effectively bridge the gap between a critical pedagogical theory and praxis in African history. Using Rodney as an example of a critical pedagogy theorist and practitioner, this essay explores how concerned historians (and those who use history as a basis for teaching) can traverse traditional disciplinary …

From Tibetan Refugees To Transmigrants: Negotiating Cultural Continuity And Economic Mobility Through Migration, Namgyal Choedup

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATIONThis dissertation research, funded by International Dissertation Research Fellowship from Social Science Research Council, investigates how a group of people, who continues to valorize their “statelessness”, critically and actively engages with the powers and policies of host nation-states and international geopolitics to negotiate their individual and collective goals of socio-economic mobility and cultural continuity. Through the study of lived experiences of three generations of Tibetan exiles living as “stateless” people in India, the study investigates historical and contemporary expressions of nation-state, homeland, cultural and ethnic identity within the Tibetan exile communities in India with reference to two …

Executive Privilege: A Review Of Berger, R. H. Clark Aug 2015

Executive Privilege: A Review Of Berger, R. H. Clark

Akron Law Review

RAOUL BERGER HAS ONCE AGAIN placed within a solidly professional framework an issue of considerable public interest and debate. As was the case with impeachment,' Berger's scholarly study on executive privilege brings to the controversy surrounding the issue a much needed analytical construct and massing of evidence which can only result in a greater level of general understanding. Although it is not accurate to suggest that Berger is neutral on the topic, since he published a significant study as far back as 1965 attacking the concept, 2 his method of massing every conceivable argument and piece of evidence on both …

Using Rhetoric To Manage Campus Crisis: An Historical Study Of College Presidents' Speeches, 1960-1964, Eddie R. Cole

International Journal of Leadership and Change

Student protests and other forms of campus conflict are prominent in higher education; however, little is known about the manner in which college presidents have historically responded to these protests and conflicts. Focused on North Carolina in the 1960s, a decade notable for student protests on college campuses, this article identifies three approaches used by college presidents in their public speeches to manage campus conflict. This research examines the speeches of college presidents in North Carolina, where the first mass protests of the decade occurred during the student movement for civil rights starting in 1960 until 1964 when the Civil …

A Jamaican Voice: The Choral Music Of Noel Dexter, Desmond A. Moulton Aug 2015

A Jamaican Voice: The Choral Music Of Noel Dexter, Desmond A. Moulton

Dissertations

As we approach the twenty-first century, the world generally is moving away from the dominance of the European aesthetic towards a world music that owes much to the musical resources of the African-American tradition. Jamaica’s social and philosophical music belong mainly to that tradition, which includes the use of rhythms, and timbral and melodic resources that exist independently of harmony. Already in this century, Jamaicans have created two totally new music - Nyabinghi, which performs a philosophical function and Reggae, which performs a social function. The choral music of Noel Dexter is important because it is uniquely Jamaican/Caribbean in its …

Assessing The Role Of History In The Federal Courts Canon: A Word Of Caution, Amanda L. Tyler Aug 2015

Assessing The Role Of History In The Federal Courts Canon: A Word Of Caution, Amanda L. Tyler

Notre Dame Law Review

In undertaking historical inquiry in the field of federal courts, one must be careful about assigning certain data points from the Founding period determinative weight, rather than treating them as part of a larger conversation about the role of the judicial power in our constitutional framework. This is because in studying the early years following ratification of the Constitution, one tends to find both examples of major principles that remained the subject of disagreement as well as examples of early legislation and practices that today we would reject as plainly inconsistent with the constitutional separation of powers. In support of …

Territorial Possessions: Gender, Power, And Identity In Tudor Ireland, Tara S. Rider Aug 2015

Territorial Possessions: Gender, Power, And Identity In Tudor Ireland, Tara S. Rider

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Gender, power, and identity formed a critical intersection in sixteenth century Ireland as Tudor England sought to bring this neighboring island more fully under Crown control. This dissertation examines how England imposed gender on both the Irish landscape and the Irish people, creating an illusion of weakness, a lack of power, and a means of controlling a society and a nation. This project examines the strategies England employed in the sixteenth century to bring Ireland more fully under English control in order to demonstrate how the cultural construction of Ireland's land and populace as both female and Other justified English …

Metabolomics Of Transformed Mda-Mb-231 Cell Lines Expressing Different Levels Of Human Arylamine N-Acetyltransferase 1 (Nat1)., Samantha Marie Carlisle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human arylamine N-acetyltransferase 1 (NAT1) is a phase II xenobiotic metabolizing enzyme that is found in almost all tissues of the body. Expression of NAT1 is commonly elevated in several cancers including breast cancer. However, the exact mechanism by which NAT1 expression affects cancer risk and progression remains unclear. Three MDA-MB-231 breast adenocarcinoma cell lines that stably express wild-type, increased, and decreased levels of human NAT1 have been constructed and characterized for NAT1 mRNA, NAT1 acetylation activity, cell doubling rates, and endogenous acetyl-CoA levels. Differences in polar metabolic profile between these three cell lines were investigated using a comprehensive GC×GC−TOF …

Fenton Chemistry And Disease - The Role Of Particle-Derived Reactive Oxygen Species In Pathogenesis, Andrea Dawn Harrington Aug 2015

Fenton Chemistry And Disease - The Role Of Particle-Derived Reactive Oxygen Species In Pathogenesis, Andrea Dawn Harrington

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) are vital to the normal functioning of the immune system in the human body. However, when a foreign material enters the system the highly regulated balance between pro- and anti-oxidants can be disrupted, especially if the material itself can generate ROS. One way a material can generate ROS is through Fenton chemistry. The hypothesis that Fenton chemistry is an important factor in many exposure related diseases is experimentally tested using an array of complementary acellular and cellular in vitro techniques. The acellular experiments focused on determining the particle-derived formation of ROS upon dispersion in aqueous solutions, …

Selling Sacred Cities: Tourism, Region, And Nation In Cusco, Peru, Mark Rice Aug 2015

Selling Sacred Cities: Tourism, Region, And Nation In Cusco, Peru, Mark Rice

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

It is hard to imagine a more iconic representation of Peru than the Inca archeological complex of Machu Picchu located in the Cusco region. However, when US explorer, Hiram Bingham, announced that he had discovered the " lost city" in 1911, few would have predicted Machu Picchu's rise to fame during the twentieth century. My dissertation traces the unlikely transformation of Machu Picchu into its present-day role as a modern tourism destination and a representation of Peruvian national identity. Beginning in the 1920s, cusqueño elites embraced the discourse of tourism to re-imagine their region's indigenous heritage not as a sign …

Advantageously Adverse: Chinese Cinemas In Transition, 1945-1951, Lunpeng Ma

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Gone with the Wind (1939), a Hollywood prestige picture, was translated into Chinese as A Beauty at a Turbulent Time in 1946 and became a box-office hit at Shanghai. Its startling success, however, was soon overwhelmed in every aspect by a domestic film, The Spring River Flows East. This second blockbuster indicates the revitalization of Chinese cinemas in terms of aesthetics, genre, and industry in the aftermath of the Japanese occupation. Nevertheless, the translated title A Beauty at a Turbulent Time subliminally manifested the worries and dreams of China in a chaotic period. In this dissertation I examine postwar Chinese …

Law's Acceleration Of Finance: Redefining The Problem Of High-Frequency Trading, Frank Pasquale Aug 2015

Law's Acceleration Of Finance: Redefining The Problem Of High-Frequency Trading, Frank Pasquale

Cardozo Law Review

High-frequency traders automate stock trading, placing thousands of orders over fractions of a second. Their algorithmic strategies are all too often mere rule manipulation or methods of using brute speed to gain advantages over rivals. Normative evaluation of finance's algorithms must take into account the sector's social function: to spur efficient, fair, and sustainable investment practices. The complex modeling deployed in high-frequency trading does not reliably contribute to these goals. Therefore, rather than straining to accommodate high-frequency trading strategies, regulators should eliminate many of them.

Future Views Of The Past: Models Of The Development Of The Early Church, John Reeve Aug 2015

Future Views Of The Past: Models Of The Development Of The Early Church, John Reeve

Andrews University Seminary Student Journal

Models of historiography often drive the theological understanding of persons and periods in Christian history. This article evaluates eight different models of the early church period and then suggests a model that is appropriate for use in a Seventh-day Adventist Seminary. The first three models evaluated are general views of the early church by Irenaeus of Lyon, Walter Bauer and Martin Luther. Models four through eight are views found within Seventh-day Adventism, though some of them are not unique to Adventism. The ninth model, proposed by the author, is expressed colloquially for the sake of simplicity and memorability: The good …

International Trade V. International Property Lawyers: Globalization And The Brazilian Legal Profession, Vitor Martins Dias Aug 2015

International Trade V. International Property Lawyers: Globalization And The Brazilian Legal Profession, Vitor Martins Dias

Maurer Theses and Dissertations

This work analyzes a distinctive characteristic of the globalizing Brazilian legal profession. Namely, intellectual property (IP) lawyers who once were leaders in opening the Brazilian economy and were key players in cross-border transactions are now losing ground to their peers with an expertise in international trade. The thesis of this article is that the manner in which Brazilian lawyers are being educated is in shambles. Generally speaking, Brazilian legal education has, overall, become degraded and provincial. Yet, Brazilian international trade lawyers, unlike Brazilian IP-lawyers, have overcome their deficient legal training by seeking legal education abroad. By traveling overseas, especially to …

The Will Of The Master: Testamentary Manumission In Virginia, 1800-1858, Catherine Wisnosky Aug 2015

The Will Of The Master: Testamentary Manumission In Virginia, 1800-1858, Catherine Wisnosky

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This thesis explores the issues surrounding testamentary manumission, the ability of

masters to manumit slaves via their will in Virginia during the first half of the nineteenth

century. Using 37 cases in which the will was challenged and appealed up to the Supreme

Court of Virginia, I argue that in addition to the complexities of adjudicating a contested

will, the arguments and opinions offered by lawyers and judges in these cases show the

evolving discourse surrounding in slavery in Virginia during this period.

After developing a consistent and coherent body of law to regulate the manumission

of slaves in the …

Utopia And Human Culture: Alternative Communities Of Higher Learning In America, Eli Orner Kramer Aug 2015

Utopia And Human Culture: Alternative Communities Of Higher Learning In America, Eli Orner Kramer

Theses

In this thesis I explore the place of the actualized utopian American alternative community of higher learning within a philosophy of human culture. I carry out such a study in order to articulate a unifying description of movement; to find the “target” that orients the activity of actualized utopia, as opposed to a classificatory rule to define a mechanically determined utopian-object. Although these communities have varied in practice since the first generation of them were created in the mid-nineteenth century, I argue that they have played, and continue to play, a particular role in America. They imagine what a world …

Religious Outsiders And The Catholic Critique Of Protestantism In America, Bradley Kime Aug 2015

Religious Outsiders And The Catholic Critique Of Protestantism In America, Bradley Kime

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, numerous new religious and irreligious groups arose throughout the United States. These groups were often radical in their assertions of religious authority, their interpretations of scripture, their predictions about Christ’s second coming, their practice of supernatural gifts, their rejection of traditional Christian doctrines, or their rejection of Christianity altogether. American Catholics watched and commented as these groups multiplied and gained momentum. Catholics believed that the growth of radical religious and irreligious groups was the fault of mainstream Protestantism. Over the centuries, Catholics had argued that the Pope’s authority was necessary to provide spiritual …

Work Meaning And Its Buffering Effect On The Relationship Between Perceived Stress And Health Risk Factors, Christina Locke Ingram Jul 2015

Work Meaning And Its Buffering Effect On The Relationship Between Perceived Stress And Health Risk Factors, Christina Locke Ingram

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The current study explores the association between perceived stress and health risk factors (heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, high blood glucose/diabetes, tobacco use, problematic alcohol use, physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and depressive symptoms) among a sample of working adults. The moderating effect of work meaning on the relationship between perceived stress and health risk factors was examined. It was hypothesized that greater levels of perceived stress would be significantly associated with a higher number of total health risks and that the relationship between perceived stress and total health risks would be buffered by work meaning. Although the …

The Effect Of Aspirin On Bleeding And Transfusion In Contemporary Cardiac Surgery., Jordan E Goldhammer, Gregary D. Marhefka, Constantine Daskalakis, Mark W Berguson, John E Bowen, James Diehl, Jianzhong Sun

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVE: Despite evidence that preoperative aspirin improves outcomes in cardiac surgery, recommendations for aspirin use are inconsistent due to aspirin's anti-platelet effect and concern for bleeding. The purpose of this study was to investigate preoperative aspirin use and its effect on bleeding and transfusion in cardiac surgery.

METHODS: This retrospective study involved consecutive patients (n=1571) who underwent CABG, valve, or combined CABG and valve surgery at a single center between March 2007 and July 2012. Of all patients, 728 met the inclusion criteria and were divided into two groups: those using (n=603) or not using (n=125) aspirin within 5 days …
