Introduction:Background to metabolomics:

Metabolomics is the comprehensive study of the metabolome, the repertoire of biochemicals (or small molecules) present in cells, tissues, and body fluids. The study of metabolism at the global or “-omics” level is a rapidly growing field that has the potential to have a profound impact upon medical practice. At the center of metabolomics, is the concept that a person’s metabolic state provides a close representation of that individual’s overall health status. This metabolic state reflects what has been encoded by the genome, and modified by diet, environmental factors, and the gut microbiome. The metabolic profile provides …

Early Copper Smelting In The Lake Superior Region:A Case Study Of The Isle Royale And Ohio Mining Company, 1846-1852, Adrian Blake Jan 2016

Early Copper Smelting In The Lake Superior Region:A Case Study Of The Isle Royale And Ohio Mining Company, 1846-1852, Adrian Blake

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The lodes of native copper found in the Lake Superior region presented new opportunities for investors and miners alike. Making these opportunities pay required the unique challenges presented by the region’s remoteness and unique geological formations to be overcome. A primary way in which these newly emerging companies overcame these challenges was through successful vertical integration of the copper refining industries. Smelting came to the region early, but met with little success as the workers first needed to retool their skills and experiences to the demands of the region’s mineral deposits. In 1848 the Isle Royale and Ohio Mining Company …

Global Mortality Impact Of The 1957–1959 Influenza Pandemic, Cecile Viboud, Lone Simonsen, Rodrigo Fuentes, Jose Flores, Mark A. Miller, Gerardo Chowell

Global Health Faculty Publications

Background. Quantitative estimates of the global burden of the 1957 influenza pandemic are lacking. Here we fill this gap by modeling historical mortality statistics.

Methods. We used annual rates of age- and cause-specific deaths to estimate pandemic-related mortality in excess of background levels in 39 countries in Europe, the Asia-Pacific region, and the Americas. We modeled the relationship between excess mortality and development indicators to extrapolate the global burden of the pandemic.

Results. The pandemic-associated excess respiratory mortality rate was 1.9/10 000 population (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.2–2.6 cases/10 000 population) on average during 1957–1959. Excess mortality rates varied 70-fold …

Beyond Eureka: What Creators Want (Freedom, Credit, And Audiences) And How Intellectual Property Can Better Give It To Them (By Supporting Sharing, Licensing, And Attribution), Colleen Chien

Faculty Publications

What do creators want? Jessica Silbey’s book, the Eureka Myth, distills the answers she received to this question over the course of interviews with more than fifty filmmakers, photographers, hardware and software engineers, business executives working with pharmaceutical, medical device, and telecommunications companies, and others. While many purport to speak for creators, Silbey’s subjects speak for themselves, through long excerpts that appear throughout the book. In this book review, I combine their insights with other historical and modern empirical accounts to carry out the thought experiment of what an intellectual property system keenly attuned to the needs of creators – …

Roles Of Accumbal And Septal Circuitry In Stimulus-Induced Reinstatement Of Cocaine Seeking, Ellen Morgan Mcglinchey Jan 2016

Roles Of Accumbal And Septal Circuitry In Stimulus-Induced Reinstatement Of Cocaine Seeking, Ellen Morgan Mcglinchey

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Chronic relapse is a tremendous obstacle in battling addiction. Animal models of relapse (e.g. reinstatement of extinguished lever pressing) are critical for uncovering the neural substrates of addiction. Understanding the neurocircuitry of relapse may provide potentially viable targets to reduce relapse rates and treat addiction. Elucidating the circuits involved in stimulus-induced reinstatement is of particular importance because drug-associated stimuli (e.g. discrete or contextual drug-associated cues) evoke drug craving and perpetuate drug seeking. Nucleus accumbens (NAc) and lateral septum (LS) are two subcortical structures known to contribute to drug addiction and relapse behaviors. However, NAc and LS afferents recruited during stimulus-induced …

"We Are All Mentally Ill" : Grassroots Efforts To Provide Lgbtq Affirmative Psychotherapy & Social Services, 1960-1987: Oral History Project, Seattle, Washington, Dexter Rose

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This thesis reports on the preliminary oral history findings collected for a larger national study directed by David S. Byers and Stephen Vider. The findings reported here focus on experiences of clinicians and social service providers in Seattle, Washington. Another student, José Hernandez conducted similar field research in Los Angeles, California. Both projects were under the supervision of the principal investigators.

The larger study—and this thesis—examines the motivations and strategies of clinicians and social services workers offering lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) affirmative psychotherapy and social services during a time when homosexuality and later egodystonic homosexuality were listed …

Adult Adoptees And Considerations Of Parenthood : An Exploratory Study Examining Adoption Experiences And Effects, Katherine E. Green Jan 2016

Adult Adoptees And Considerations Of Parenthood : An Exploratory Study Examining Adoption Experiences And Effects, Katherine E. Green

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This exploratory, qualitative study sought to investigate how the experience of adoption affects an adoptee’s decision to start a family (or not). One reason to conduct this study was to isolate a particular developmental stage – entering parenthood – to observe deliberations related to the experience of being adopted. This study adds to the limited but growing body of research dedicated to adult adoptees with the aim of assisting clinicians in the field of social work to enhance their knowledge about the experiences of adopted people, especially those who are considering starting a family.

The study was conducted by interviewing …

Covariate Adjustment In Non-Inferiority Trials: Implications For Type I Error, Katherine Nicholas Jan 2016

Covariate Adjustment In Non-Inferiority Trials: Implications For Type I Error, Katherine Nicholas

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

There has been little work to date regarding the proper use of covariate information in non-inferiority trials. Too often knowledge obtained in the superiority setting is applied directly to the non-inferiority setting. However, due to the reversal of the hypotheses and the consequent reversal of the implication of error probabilities, this is a dangerous practice. The current work demonstrates that in both superiority and non-inferiority, failure to adjust for important covariates results in estimates of treatment effect that are biased towards zero with standard errors that are deflated. However, as no treatment difference is approached under the null hypothesis in …

More Than Stone And Iron: Indigenous History And Incarceration In Canada, 1834-1996, Seth Adema Jan 2016

More Than Stone And Iron: Indigenous History And Incarceration In Canada, 1834-1996, Seth Adema

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This dissertation examines Indigenous (First Nation, Métis, and Inuit) history as played out in Canadian prisons. It argues that in the prison, processes of colonialism, decolonization, and neocolonialism took place simultaneously. In the nineteenth century, the prison was built as part of a network of colonial institutions and polices. It was imagined, designed, and built by representatives of the Canadian state alongside other colonial institutions, drawing on similar intellectual traditions. It maintains the imprint of this colonial origin. Prisons also became arenas for Indigenous cultural exchange and cultural creation, which in most cases subverted the logic of the prison. This …

Founding A Historically Latino/Caribbean-Serving Institution: An Archival Research Study On Florida International University, Amaris Del Carmen Guzmán Jan 2016

Founding A Historically Latino/Caribbean-Serving Institution: An Archival Research Study On Florida International University, Amaris Del Carmen Guzmán

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Employing an archival research approach, this study explores the formation of Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Florida. As one of the few institutions to open its doors with a specific mission to promote greater international understanding, this study explores diasporic migration and community formation in efforts to challenge the U.S. federally designated phrase of Hispanic-serving Institutions (HSIs) and acknowledge those HSIs who have historically served Latino and Caribbean populations. The author defined FIU as a Historically Latino/Caribbean-serving institution based on the transnational Latino and Caribbean cultural community formation in southeast Florida between the mid-1960s and mid-1970s. Specifically, this dissertation …

The Social Contagion Of Adolescent Depression: Applying A Differential Susceptibility Model, Win Guan Jan 2016

The Social Contagion Of Adolescent Depression: Applying A Differential Susceptibility Model, Win Guan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Recent research investigating social risk factors of depression has found evidence for a social contagion effect. The research comes from a surge in popularity of using social network analyses to examine the spread of various health outcomes such as obesity, smoking, substance use, and sleep. Although the finding of depressive contagion represents a significant contribution to the literature on the social etiology of depression, this is only the first step in providing meaningful research useful for the practical application of curbing the growing rates of depression especially among adolescents. Rather than simply acknowledging the existence of contagion effects, researchers must …

Numerical Simulation Of Pile Installation And Following Setup Considering Soil Consolidation And Thixotropy, Firouz Rosti Jan 2016

Numerical Simulation Of Pile Installation And Following Setup Considering Soil Consolidation And Thixotropy, Firouz Rosti

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

During pile installation, the stresses and void ratios in the surrounding soils change significantly, creating large displacements, soil disturbance and the development of excess porewater pressures. The disturbed soils, especially fine grain soils, tend to regain their strength over time due to both the consolidation of the excess porewater pressure and thixotropic behavior of soil particles. In this research, the pile installation process and the subsequent consolidation, the thixotropy and load tests for several test piles were modeled using finite element (FE) model. A new elastoplastic constitutive model, which was developed based on the disturbed state concept (DSC) and critical …

Decolonizing World History: Mis-Representations Of The Middle East In Secondary Social Studies Textbooks, Amanda Megan Schellhaas Jan 2016

Decolonizing World History: Mis-Representations Of The Middle East In Secondary Social Studies Textbooks, Amanda Megan Schellhaas

LSU Master's Theses

This study utilizes content analysis to evaluate three United States High School World History textbook’s coverage of the Middle East since 1945 in order to determine if an authentic global approach to history is being utilized. This was determined by analyzing the amount of coverage that was dedicated to the Middle East, the focus of the narrative, and the portrayal of the Middle East. Analysis of the narrative content of the texts showed that coverage of the Middle East overall did not receive an equitable representation in comparison to other regions. The focus of this coverage centered on defining the …

Business Busts And U.S. Auditors’ Interest In Fraud Detection: Evidence From The 20th Century, Stephanie D. Moussalli, Gokhan Karahan, Muhammad Azizul Islan Jan 2016

Business Busts And U.S. Auditors’ Interest In Fraud Detection: Evidence From The 20th Century, Stephanie D. Moussalli, Gokhan Karahan, Muhammad Azizul Islan

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

We find evidence that U.S. auditors increased their attention to fraud detection during or immediately after the economic contractions of the 20th century, based on a content analysis of the 12 volumes of the 20th-century auditing reference series Montgomery’s Auditing. Contractions, however, do not seem to have affected auditors’ attention to the formal goal of fraud detection. The study suggests that auditors’ aversion to the heightened risks of fraud during economic downturns leads them to focus more on fraud detection at those times regardless of the particular guidance in formal audit standards. This study is the first to find some …

Sovereignty And Indigenous Peoples In North America, Kent Mcneil Jan 2016

Sovereignty And Indigenous Peoples In North America, Kent Mcneil

Articles & Book Chapters

This article examines the concept of sovereignty and its application in the context of European colonization of North America. It seeks to define sovereignty so as to avoid Eurocentric notions that denied sovereignty to Indigenous peoples. The article does this by distinguishing between defacto and de jure sovereignty: the former depends on actual possession and control of a territory, whereas the latter depends on the application of a particular legal system. Unlike de facto sovereignty, which is empirical, de jure sovereignty depends on a choice of law. Because more than one legal system can be applied to territories occupied by …

The Perpetual Archive: Mapping Living Archive As Inventory, Jenny Filipetti Jan 2016

The Perpetual Archive: Mapping Living Archive As Inventory, Jenny Filipetti

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Inventory is the new archive. It is strange that no one has said it before. Inventory: apprehending the records of the past in order to understand the present and prepare for the future. Today's inventories are entire living ecosystems of products, control systems, consumers, barcode scanners, warehouse shipments, Internet shopping carts. Inventory has ceased to track, merely: inventory does. And who would ever stop with inventory? Inventory is only always an invitation to access, a means to a (never-)end(ing).

Teacher Strategies For Developing Historical Empathy, Billy Kenneth Harris Jan 2016

Teacher Strategies For Developing Historical Empathy, Billy Kenneth Harris

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Research indicates that the application of historical empathy, defined as using historical evidence to reconstruct past perspectives, engenders critical thinking in students. There is lack of research on the level of comprehension and use of historical empathy as an instructional strategy by high school history instructors. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore teachers' comprehension and application of historical empathy in 2 high schools. This study was grounded in Edmund Husserl's concept of intersubjectivity, which suggests that apperception facilitates the grasp of multiple perspectives. Research questions addressed history teacher comprehension and employment of historical empathy as a tool …

Relationships Among Administrative Computerization, Hospital Size, And Administrative Expenses, Pamela J. Gallagher Jan 2016

Relationships Among Administrative Computerization, Hospital Size, And Administrative Expenses, Pamela J. Gallagher

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The healthcare industry is computerizing administrative functions in an attempt to reduce expenses and remain competitive. This correlational study of 3,088 Medicare-certified, short-term, acute-care hospitals in the United States was based on a general systems theory framework; it sought to examine the relationships among the independent variables of hospital size and administrative computerization and the dependent variable of administrative expenses. Secondary data from Health Information Management Systems Society's surveys and cost reports from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services were used. Correlation analyses with an alpha of .05 were used to test 3 of the 4 hypotheses; regression analysis …

Student Perceptions Of Flipped Learning In A High School Math Classroom, Daniel Strohmyer Jan 2016

Student Perceptions Of Flipped Learning In A High School Math Classroom, Daniel Strohmyer

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Flipped classrooms are implemented in more schools each year, particularly in courses requiring increased teacher guidance for mastery. While a foundation of research related to pedagogy and academic outcomes exists, research is limited surrounding student perceptions of the social and learning culture during flipped learning. The purpose of this study was to explore high school math students' lived experiences of flipped learning related to content and instruction, critical thinking, and collaboration and interactions. A phenomenological design was employed using a conceptual framework combining cognitive load theory, sociocultural learning theory, and schema theory. Students from two public high schools in the …

Beyond Eureka: What Creators Want (Freedom, Credit, And Audiences) And How Intellectual Property Can Better Give It To Them (By Supporting, Sharing, Licensing, And Attribution), Colleen Chien Jan 2016

Beyond Eureka: What Creators Want (Freedom, Credit, And Audiences) And How Intellectual Property Can Better Give It To Them (By Supporting, Sharing, Licensing, And Attribution), Colleen Chien

Michigan Law Review

In the theater of the courtroom or the rough and tumble arena of intellectual property policymaking, the day-to-day lives of creators are rarely presented. We often instead see one-dimensional vignettes, for example, “the new artist or band that has just released their [sic] first single and will not be paid for its success,” described on Taylor Swift’s Tumblr last summer when she initially withdrew from Apple’s music streaming service. While instructive, this description leaves out that Swift and other artists have long relied on “free play” mediums like radio and, more recently, YouTube to develop, not cannibalize, their audiences and …

Police Terror And Officer Indemnification, Allyssa Villanueva Jan 2016

Police Terror And Officer Indemnification, Allyssa Villanueva

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

Police accountability has quickly pressed to the forefront of national conversations and subsequently, the national political agenda. Increasing prevalence of excessive and lethal use of force by police officers induced this attention. President Obama convened a Task Force on 21st Century Policing, after the Department of Justice conducted several pattern and practice investigation of misconduct following the high‐profile deaths of unarmed Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Their deaths both resulted in no criminal charges against responsible officers. Civil suit was the only option left for officer accountability. This Note addresses the use of 42 U.S.C. §1983 as the common civil …

Effects Of Magnetic Drift Shell Splitting On Electron Diffusion In The Radiation Belts, Liheng Zheng, A. A. Chan, T. P. O'Brien, W. Tu, G. S. Cunningham, J. M. Albert, S. R. Elkington Jan 2016

Effects Of Magnetic Drift Shell Splitting On Electron Diffusion In The Radiation Belts, Liheng Zheng, A. A. Chan, T. P. O'Brien, W. Tu, G. S. Cunningham, J. M. Albert, S. R. Elkington

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Drift shell splitting in the presence of pitch angle scattering breaks all three adiabatic invariants of radiation belt electron motion and produces new diffusion terms that fully populate the diffusion tensor in the Fokker-Planck equation. The Radbelt Electron Model (REM) solves such a Fokker-Planck equation and is used to investigate the phase space density sources. Our simulation results and theoretical arguments suggest that drift shell splitting changes the phase space location of the source to smaller L shells, which typically reduces outer zone phase space density enhancements, and this reduction has a limit corresponding to two-dimensional local diffusion on a …
