Copper Mining And Football: Comparing The Game In The Katangese And Rhodesian Copperbelts C. 1930 – 1980, Hikabwa D. Chipande Jan 2016

Copper Mining And Football: Comparing The Game In The Katangese And Rhodesian Copperbelts C. 1930 – 1980, Hikabwa D. Chipande

Zambia Social Science Journal

Throughout the twentieth century, colonial authorities believed in the power of sport as a tool for moulding submissive labour. Belgian and British colonialists, industrialists and Christian missionaries introduced football to the Katangese and Rhodesian Copperbelts respectively towards the end of the nineteenth century and at the beginning of the twentieth century and attempted to use it as a tool for controlling, and ‘civilising’ colonised Africans. This paper argues that Africans found alternative ways of eluding colonial and capitalist exploitation in the mining towns, appropriated football, used it to build urban networks and sometimes even to express aspirations for independence. The …

Angels With Leather Wings: An Ethnography Of The Christian Motorcyclists Association, Richard Vincent O'Connell Jan 2016

Angels With Leather Wings: An Ethnography Of The Christian Motorcyclists Association, Richard Vincent O'Connell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For two years I rode with a group of bikers. For those two years we rode together, ate together, and prayed together. The bikers with which I rode were members of the Christian Motorcyclists Association and they believe that they have a mission to evangelize the world of American bikers.

The resulting ethnography is a study of a little known, little understood and little studied segment of the American evangelical Christian movement. Recent academic study posits that Americans in larger numbers are experiencing religion, spirituality, and faith differentially than in the past, as reflected in gradually decreasing numbers of Americans …

An Empirical Analysis Of The Effect Of Wealth On Health Indicators, Olivia Derogatis Jan 2016

An Empirical Analysis Of The Effect Of Wealth On Health Indicators, Olivia Derogatis

Empirical Economic Bulletin, An Undergraduate Journal

This paper uses regression analysis with panel data in order to investigate the relationship between income and health indicators in ten high income countries. The purpose of this study is to investigate if income has a significant and positive effect on the health of a nation’s population. In theory, the health of the population in high income countries should be positively correlated to the country’s income because the wealthier a nation, the more available resources the nation has to allocate to health care spending. The dependent variables in this study are life expectancy at birth and infant mortality rate. The …

Race And Historiography: Advancing A Critical-Realist Approach, Dafina-Lazarus Stewart Jan 2016

Race And Historiography: Advancing A Critical-Realist Approach, Dafina-Lazarus Stewart

Higher Education and Student Affairs Faculty Publications

This scholarly essay interrogates the seemingly necessary engagement of normative and essentialist characterizations of identity in the historical study of race in U.S. higher education. The author’s study of the experiences of Black collegians in private, liberal arts colleges in the Midwestern Great Lakes region between 1945 and 1965 grounds this discussion. Although engaging racial essentialism is necessary, the author presents alternative treatments of historicizing race to illustrate the benefits of a critical-realist approach to producing a synthetic cultural educational history.

Rupture Of The Virtual, John W. Kim Jan 2016

Rupture Of The Virtual, John W. Kim

Books

Rupture of the Virtual is an examination of a concept of the material and the invaluable resources it offers for critical thinking today. In a multifaceted analysis, the book considers the theoretical reasons for the material’s exclusion from media theory and details the military origins of computing interface technologies, such as the Head-up Display and Augmented Reality, that enhance knowledge over the material. Rupture of the Virtual insists that a renewal of the material can be central to a critique of the virtual as a cultural condition.

A Comparison Of The Mathematical Performance Of Mature Students And Traditional Students Over A 10-Year Period, Fiona Faulkner, Olivia Fitzmaurice, Olivia Hannigan

Journal Articles

Every student who enrols in a degree programme involving service mathematics in the University of Limerick in Ireland is given a mathematics diagnostic test. The diagnostic test was developed due to mathematics lecturers’ anxiety regarding students’ mathematical competency levels. Students receive the 40 question paper-based test in their first service mathematics lecture without prior notification. Initial analysis of students’ work revealed that many students were having difficulties with basic algebra and arithmetic in particular [Gill, O. 2006. “What Counts as Service Mathematics? An Investigation into the ‘Mathematics Problem’ in Ireland.” PhD diss., University of Limerick]. Further research highlighted the significant …

In Search Of A "New" Sovietology, New Post- Sovietologyor Central Asianstudies…, Zarema Shaimardanova

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The Euro-American, Kazakh and Russian studies naturally raised and are still raising the question of the future Sovietology, Post-Sovietology and even Post-Post- Sovietology caused by the USSR collapse and understanding the need to rethink the theoretical and methodological foundations to study the New Independent States / CIS as a whole and in the Central Asian region, in particular. Sovietology could not adequately reflect the changed reality. The author demonstrates the consistency and inconsistency of sovietology concerning the question about Kazakhstan History/ Archaeology, as colonization, russification, sovietization and etc. The socio-economic development of independent Kazakhstan evaluated by foreign researchers was taken …

Jagadish Chandra Bose And Vedantic Science, C. Mackenzie Brown Jan 2016

Jagadish Chandra Bose And Vedantic Science, C. Mackenzie Brown

Religion Faculty Research

'The real is one: wise men call it variously.' Utilizing this celebrated declaration of the Rig Veda as an epigraph in his first scientific monograph, Response in the Living and Non-Living, (1902), the audacious Indian physicist Jagadish Chandra Bose (1858-1937) intimated to the Western scientific world that his electrographic discovery of the unity of life - that the animate and the inanimate world are one - was an affirmation of the insights of the ancient Vedic seers.

The Case For Taxonomic Reparations, Melissa Adler Jan 2016

The Case For Taxonomic Reparations, Melissa Adler

FIMS Publications

Critical histories of subjects and classifications have unearthed the spatial-temporal situatedness of knowledge organization structures and terminologies. Coming to terms with the cultural foundations upon which our knowledge organizations are built and the ways they change and stay the same means that we also confront difficult truths about epistemic and systemic violence. This paper brings KO scholars into dialogue with critical race theorists, indigenous studies scholars, and queer theorists around conversations about reparations and reparative reading practices. It argues that historical studies that expose processes of exclusion and marginalization reveal the need and possibilities for creating reparative taxonomies. The paper …

Confucian Thought And Care Ethics: An Amicable Split?, Andrew Lambert Jan 2016

Confucian Thought And Care Ethics: An Amicable Split?, Andrew Lambert

Publications and Research

Since Chenyang Li’s (1994) groundbreaking article there has been interest in reading early Confucian ethics through the lens of care ethics. In this paper, I examine the prospects for dialogue between the two in light of recent work in both fields.

I argue that, despite some similarities, early Confucian ethics is not best understood as a form of care ethics, of the kind articulated by Nel Noddings (1984, 2002) and others. Reasons include incongruence deriving from the absence in the Chinese texts of a developed account of need, and doubts about whether the parent-child relationship in Confucian thought is best …

The Impact Of School Policing Practices On Student Behaviors In Ohio Public Schools, Jennifer Marie Dohy Jan 2016

The Impact Of School Policing Practices On Student Behaviors In Ohio Public Schools, Jennifer Marie Dohy

ETD Archive

Many American public schools began to employ School Resource Officers (SROs) in the 1990s as a result of mass school shootings in the early 1990s (Weiler & Cray, 2011). An SRO is a law enforcement officer serving primarily within a school community whose mission is to ensure safety, order, and discipline through conflict mediation and critical incident response (Clark, 2011). According to national data, there are currently SROs in 35% of schools, regardless of level (e.g., elementary, middle, and high school), location (e.g., rural, town, suburban, or city), or student population (Weiler & Cray, 2011). Despite a heavy reliance on …

Captives, Catherine M. Cameron Jan 2016

Captives, Catherine M. Cameron

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

In Captives: How Stolen People Changed the World archaeologist Catherine M. Cameron provides an eye-opening comparative study of the profound impact that captives of warfare and raiding have had on small- scale societies through time. Cameron provides a new point of orientation for archaeologists, anthropologists, historians, and other scholars by illuminating the impact that captive-taking and enslavement have had on cultural change, with important implications for understanding the past.

Focusing primarily on indigenous societies in the Americas while extending the comparative reach to include Europe, Africa, and Island Southeast Asia, Cameron draws on ethnographic, ethnohistoric, historic, and archaeological data to …

Teen Perceptions Of Cell Phone And Internet Sexual Messaging: Trends And Predictors, David Gregg Jan 2016

Teen Perceptions Of Cell Phone And Internet Sexual Messaging: Trends And Predictors, David Gregg

Wayne State University Dissertations

The purpose of the current study was to propose and test a predictive model for high school sexting in order to better understand influences and characteristics that contribute most to one’s decision to sext. Sexting was defined as either sending or receiving photos, videos, or text messages that contained full nudity, partial nudity, sexual requests, or comments of a sexual nature. Rates and typical recipients of sexual content were also examined in this study. A sample of 314 high school students in an urban area of Southeast Michigan were surveyed. Males were found to more frequently report engaging in nearly …

Ashton, Bekins, And Necessity: Why Chapter 9 Is Constitutional, But Not The Only Way For Municipalities To Adjust Their Debts, Aaron Michael Dmiszewicki Jan 2016

Ashton, Bekins, And Necessity: Why Chapter 9 Is Constitutional, But Not The Only Way For Municipalities To Adjust Their Debts, Aaron Michael Dmiszewicki

University of Miami Business Law Review

The 1930s saw the nation in crisis, steeped in the worst of the Great Depression. In 1936, over 2,000 municipalities, counties, and other governmental units, in 41 of the 48 states, were known to be in default. In response to this crisis, Congress amended the Bankruptcy Act in 1934 and passed the first municipal bankruptcy statute. Shortly thereafter, the Supreme Court struck it down. Undeterred, Congress passed another municipal bankruptcy statute in 1937, which was almost identical to the previously invalidated law. In 1938, the Supreme Court, now stocked with Roosevelt-appointed New Deal sympathizers, upheld the law.

However, the latter …

Viewing The Temple Through Wilford Woodruff’S Eyes, Laura Harris Hales Jan 2016

Viewing The Temple Through Wilford Woodruff’S Eyes, Laura Harris Hales

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In Wilford Woodruff’s Witness, Jennifer Ann Mackley takes what could easily be a dry topic and turns it into a fascinating study not only of the unfolding of Latter-day Saint temple doctrine but also of early Mormonism. Primarily using Woodruff’s own words taken from his journals and published discourses, the narrative follows the line-upon‑line revelation of doctrine pertaining to the purpose and ordinances of the temple and the quest for sacred space to conduct these rites.

Dating Joseph Smith’S First Nauvoo Sealings, Brian C. Hales

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In the October 2015 issue of The Journal of Mormon History, Gary Bergera presents a richly illustrated article, “Memory as Evidence: Dating Joseph Smith’s Plural Marriages to Louisa Beaman, Zina Jacobs, and Presendia Buell” (95–131). It focuses on a page from the “Historian’s Private Journal,” which Bergera dates to “specifically September or thereabouts” of 1866 (99). Wilford Woodruff’s handwriting on that page describes Joseph Smith’s plural marriage sealings and dates his marriage to Louisa Beaman to “May 1840,” to Zina Huntington on “October 27, 1840,” to Presendia Huntington on “December 11, 1840,” and also to Rhoda Richards on “June 12, …

What's Going On With Florida?: An Investigation Into The Disproportionate Voting Trends Of The Florida Electorate, Zachary David Poe Jan 2016

What's Going On With Florida?: An Investigation Into The Disproportionate Voting Trends Of The Florida Electorate, Zachary David Poe

Theses & ETDs

The last couple Presidential elections in Florida have resulted in important electoral victories and gains for the Democratic Party. These victories, however, are starkly contrasted by the consistent failure of the Democratic Party to replicate the successes experienced with the Presidential cycle during the Midterm cycle. This failure poses an important question: why do the voters of Florida vote for Republican candidates during disproportionately Midterm elections instead of during the Presidential cycle? This paper believes that the answer to this question can be found by analyzing the existing voting patterns of different aspects of the current Florida electorate over the …

“Our Future Need Is As Great As The Past”: The Florida Division, United Daughters Of The Confederacy And The New Right, 1948–1970, Bo Buford Jan 2016

“Our Future Need Is As Great As The Past”: The Florida Division, United Daughters Of The Confederacy And The New Right, 1948–1970, Bo Buford

Theses & ETDs

By addressing the activity of the Florida Division, United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) throughout the height of the civil rights movement, this thesis contributes toward filling a gap in historical study on the formation of the new conservatism. Existing scholarship recognizes that the UDC’s many activities and agendas (historical, memorial, benevolent, educational, and social) served to legitimize the enforcement of Jim Crow legislation by reinforcing an historical narrative of white supremacy in the South. However, historians have neglected to seriously consider the UDC’s work after 1920 or through the Cold War-era civil rights movement. In addition to scholarship on …
