Spiritual Gifts, Pastoring, And Gender: An Ongoing Dialogue, Boubakar Sanou
Journal of Applied Christian Leadership
"in Joel 2:28-29, god promises an innovation regarding how he will make his Spirit available in the last days ... god promises to give his Spirit and gifts without discrimination to both genders (“your sons and daughters,” and “both men and women”), young and old, from all walks of life, races, and social strata. in Acts 2:16-21, the apostle Peter quotes Joel 2:28-32 to assert that the equal filling of the Spirit for the 120 disciples (among whom were women, cf. Acts 1:14) was an element of the fulfillment of god’s promise through the prophet Joel. he also points out …

"The Computer Does Not Believe In Tears": Soviet Programming, Professionalization, And The Gendering Of Authority, Ksenia Tatarchenko
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
By the middle of the 1960s, the Soviet press routinely exalted computers as the “machines of communism,” and the new programming profession had become familiar enough to make a programmer the main hero of a science iction novel. he Strugatskys’ immensely popular Monday Begins on Saturday—the title referring to a kind of work that knows no holidays—is a satirical fable where scientiic research masqueraded as magic. The novel opens with a fantastical institute staf headhunting a young programmer, Aleksandr Privalov. At the heart of the plot is the inculcation of the protagonist with a scientists’ work ethic as Aleksandr befriends …
Assessing Universalism And The Rhetoric Of Development Assistance In Human Rights Research: Canadian-Ghanaian Human Rights Engagements, Sylvia Bawa
The Transnational Human Rights Review
This article is a contribution to the question of how Canada engages human rights in Ghana and Anglophone sub-Saharan Africa in general. In order to critically assess human rights engagement between Ghana and Canada, I situate the discussion within the broader global human rights milieu to deconstruct the myriad ways in which power dynamics in the global arena shape human rights practice and discourse. Using the rights concerns of women and minorities in Ghana as an entry point, I discuss the interconnected nature of first- and second-generation rights and cultural relativism in universal rights discourses. This discussion aims to propose …

Schooled: Hiphop Composition At The Predominantly White University, Tessa Rose Brown
Schooled: Hiphop Composition At The Predominantly White University, Tessa Rose Brown
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation asks what hiphop is doing in predominantly white higher-educational contexts, specifically in composition classrooms. Using ethnographic, autoethnographic, and historical methods, it finds that hiphop’s work in composition classrooms at PWIs is contradictory. This mixed-methods investigation suggests that the contradictory relation of white fans, students, and institutions to hiphop is shaped on the one hand by white listeners’ increasing identification with the historical struggles of African Americans under capitalism, and on the other hand, by disidentification or abjectification of African Americans in an effort to “win” the zero-sum game of capitalism. This contradiction results in a paradoxical situation where …
Forging Titans: The Rise Of Industrial Capitalism In The Northern Forest, 1850-1950, Jason Lee Newton
Forging Titans: The Rise Of Industrial Capitalism In The Northern Forest, 1850-1950, Jason Lee Newton
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation describes the historical processes that made farmers and rural laborers into a coherent class of wage working lumberjacks and it tracks how this class became an iconic symbol of masculinity in twentieth-century America. "Forging Titans" argues that, as rural America industrialized, the built environment and bodies of workers became parts of nature and these natural forces were mobilized to increase the scale and efficiency of production to reach industrial levels. Because lumberjacks were seen as part of nature, they became masculine icons for self-diagnosed, overcivilized, urban, corporate elites who were looking outside the city for examples of natural …
Intraoperative Blood Pressure And Effect Of Volatile Anesthetic In Brain Dead Organ Donors, Alison Lynn Karmanian
Intraoperative Blood Pressure And Effect Of Volatile Anesthetic In Brain Dead Organ Donors, Alison Lynn Karmanian
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Background: There is a large disparity between the number of people waiting for organ transplants and the number of organs available. Optimal hemodynamic management can influence transplant outcomes, therefore evidence-based hemodynamic management should be practiced to maximize scarce donor organs.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine intraoperative blood pressures and administration of volatile anesthetics during brain dead organ donor procurements. Use of volatile anesthetics was examined to determine how use and dose affected the ability to maintain mean arterial pressure (MAP) between 60 to 90 mmHg.
Design: This study was a retrospective chart review.
Results: Twenty-eight cases …

Lagim Tehi Tuma/Thinking Together: Between Risk, Restriction, And Learning In A U.S.-Ghana Collaborative, Alice Lesnick
Collaborations: A Journal of Community-Based Research and Practice
As U.S.-based colleges and universities seek to globalize education with experiential learning, the risk of reinforcing assumptions about Western superiority, white supremacy and the “neediness” of “developing” countries increases. This essay discusses the rationale for a program that wrestles with questions of power, communication, and creativity by engaging students from the two U.S. liberal arts colleges (a consortium) and a Ghanaian university in a summer action research project. The program takes place in part on campus in the U.S. and in part in a village in Northern Ghana in partnership with three grassroots educational organizations: a community radio station, an …
Containerizing Containment: The Automation And Globalization Of The National Security Waterfront, 1945-1997, John Douglas Forrest
Containerizing Containment: The Automation And Globalization Of The National Security Waterfront, 1945-1997, John Douglas Forrest
Theses and Dissertations
After the introduction of the cargo container and related automation systems in the late 1950s, the numbers of maritime laborers who worked along the piers and aboard ship along American waterways steadily declined. In the late 1950s, tens of thousands of longshoremen and merchant mariners plied their respective trades, but the process of “containerization” reduced their numbers by nearly 70 percent by the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Department of Defense (DoD) similarly containerized and automated its cargo handling during this era. The introduction of the container also had negative consequences for defense maritime policy. Containerization of the National …

The War On Higher Education Is Now Underway., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

In 1969, President Richard Nixon formally declared
a “war on drugs” that would be directed to combat the
use of illicit drugs in the U.S. This and other “wars,”
such as the “war on gangs” or “war on cancer” have
come to signify major efforts by the federal government
against something they perceive as a threat.
In past articles in this column I have written about
concerted efforts by some groups and conservative
media to diminish funding for higher education, defame
college education as a passport to better standards
of living, portray colleges and universities as “liberal

Trade-Offs: The Production Of Sustainability In Households, Kirstin Marie Elizabeth Munro
Trade-Offs: The Production Of Sustainability In Households, Kirstin Marie Elizabeth Munro
Dissertations and Theses
Over the past half-century, environmental problems have become increasingly serious and seemingly intractable, and a careless, clueless, or contemptuous consumer is often portrayed as the root cause of this environmental decline. This study takes a different approach to evaluating the demand for resources by households, assessing possible pro-environmental paths forward through a study of highly ecologically-conscious households. By modeling "green" households as producers of sustainability rather than consumers of environmental products, the sustainability work that takes place in households is brought into focus. An investigation of household sustainability production makes possible the evaluation of the trade-offs inherent in these pro-environmental …
Recovery Of An Early Evidence Of Castor Plant, Ricinus Communis L. From The Central Sudan And Its Positioning Within A World-Wide Context, Anwar A-Magid
Journal of Arts and Social Sciences
Evidence of castor plant R. communis, L. is recovered from the Early Holocene archaeological site of Kabbashi Haitah in the Central Sudan and dated to c. 7700 - 7200 bp. This evidence represents the earliest botanical evidence recovered –so far- from the Central Sudan and elsewhere in Eastern Tropical Africa and the World. No evidence is found in the material culture remains which might indicate the likelihood of its being imported. Most of the ancient and traditional utilizations of castor plant are strikingly similar despite their being practised at different times in different and far apart regions in the World. …

Introduction To Law, Authority & History: A Tribute To Douglas Hay, Philip Girard, Jim Phillips
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
On 5 and 6 May 2016, Osgoode Hall Law School and the York University History Department sponsored a symposium entitled “Law/Authority/History: A Tribute to Douglas Hay” to mark the recent retirement of Professor Douglas Hay. The call for papers circulated to legal historians in Canada and elsewhere, and a particular attempt was made to contact Professor Hay’s former graduate students. Twenty papers were presented at the symposium, of which eight appear in this issue of the Osgoode Hall Law Journal.
It seemed self-evidently appropriate to us to recognize this milestone in Douglas Hay’s career, in his home town, and at …
Social Constructions Of Childhood: From Not-Yet-Adults To People In Their Own Right, Sophia K. Biddle
Social Constructions Of Childhood: From Not-Yet-Adults To People In Their Own Right, Sophia K. Biddle
Anthós
Across the globe it is clear that children are a marginalized group. Children are not allowed to vote or be taken seriously in political circles (Sharpe, 2015), are kept away from public spaces (Valentine 2004), navigate inhospitable working conditions (Gamlin et. al., 2015), and are rapidly losing the time and space to foster their own child culture (Woolley and Griffin, 2014). Adults continue to institutionalize children’s play and restrict children’s access to public space. This serves to reinforce children’s position as second-class citizens. A mounting body of work shows that children are suffering in their physical and social development due …
The New Mechanical Philosophy, Stuart Glennan
The New Mechanical Philosophy, Stuart Glennan
Philosophy, Religion, and Classics
The New Mechanical Philosophy argues for a new image of nature and of science--one that understands both natural and social phenomena to be the product of mechanisms, and that casts the work of science as an effort to discover and understand those mechanisms. Drawing on an expanding literature on mechanisms in physical, life, and social sciences, Stuart Glennan offers an account of the nature of mechanisms and of the models used to represent them. A key quality of mechanisms is that they are particulars - located at different places and times, with no one just like another. The crux of …

Imagining The North: Nordic Art In Nineteenth-Century Visual Culture And Criticism, Nicholas Kenton Parkinson
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation studies the reception of Nordic painting in nineteenth-century France. I argue that the notion of so-called Scandinavian Art in nineteenth-century French literature, commonly referred to as l’art scandinave, l’école scandinave, or les écoles scandinaves , and encompassing artists coming from the countries that in the present day are known as Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland, during across the second half of the nineteenth century, and solidified in usage and meaning at the end of the 1880s. The followering study presents a chronological account of how French writings on Nordic painting changed during this period, beginning with an introductory …

International Student Enrollment Trends From 2008-2014: Country Case Studies And Comparison To A Midwest Liberal Arts Institution, Emin Hajiyev
Dissertations
The international student recruitment and overall cross-border education have constantly been evolving. In the past two decades, higher education institutions were developing and implementing their plan of campus internationalization. Various universities and colleges have different approaches to the internationalization. However, through the implementation of the process, most of the institutions realized that the cornerstone of the internationalization is the international student recruitment. Despite providing the financial health to the institutions and overall to the process of internationalization, international student recruitment is the provider of the campus multiculturalism and diversity. This research is concentrated on the external factors of the cross-border …

“Lands Of The Future:” German-Speaking Identity, Networks, And Territoriality In The South Atlantic, 1820-1930, Isabelle Rispler
History Dissertations - Archive
The movement of German-speakers to the South Atlantic did not begin with Nazis seeking refuge in Argentina in the aftermath of World War II, nor did it start with the organization of the German protectorate of South-West Africa in 1884. Throughout the nineteenth century, the great majority of German-speakers leaving Europe travelled and migrated to North America, but some German-speakers had begun settling in both Argentina and Namibia well before the turn of the twentieth century. German-speaking merchants and missionaries started travelling to and settling in the South Atlantic in the 1820s. These South Atlantic German-speakers were influenced by the …
It's Time To Mind The Gasb, Israel Klein
It's Time To Mind The Gasb, Israel Klein
San Diego Law Review
[T]his article provides support for the “Public Employee Pension Transparency Act” (Transparency Bill). The Transparency Bill, introduced in all 111th to 114th Congress—however not yet became law—proposes making tax benefits related to bonds issued by a state or political subdivision conditional upon compliance with specific reporting requirements, regarding post-employment financial liabilities, established by Congress. However, and more importantly, the Article points to the fact that the Transparency Bill only deals with a symptom of a much deeper problem—the ability of public sector entities to “shop” their disclosures and therefore to avoid accountability and scrutiny. This Article proceeds as follows: In …
New Perspectives On The History Of The Ohio Valley Frontier, 1750-1838 : Connecting Recent Scholarship With Public Interpretation., Ellen Rich
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis aims to interpret for the public both the native and white perspectives of the conquest and colonization of the Ohio Valley frontier by Anglo-Americans in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Its focus is a planned museum exhibition, “Conquering the First American West: The Ohio Valley Frontier, 1750-1838,” which explores interactions between American Indians and Anglo-Americans on the Ohio Valley frontier and their consequences. The introduction justifies the need for the exhibition and outlines its major arguments. The second section examines the historiography of the conquest of the Ohio Valley and shows why stronger public interpretation is needed. …
The Mark Of The Devil : Medical Proof In Witchcraft Trials., Sarah Dunn
The Mark Of The Devil : Medical Proof In Witchcraft Trials., Sarah Dunn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the use of physical evidence to prove the identity of witches in witchcraft trials from approximately 1300 to 1650 in Western Europe. Throughout this period, trial records for accused witches and witchcraft texts include references to Devil marks. According to contemporary texts, these were physical marks on witches, which were visible to the human eye. Doctors and midwives verified these marks upon examination of the accused witch’s body. In this instance, medical proof in the courtroom verified supernatural powers. This thesis will analyze the intersection between medical and religious beliefs in the fourteenth through seventeenth centuries to …
For King And Country: Reconsidering The Great War Soldier In Britain, 1914-1945, Nicholas John Schaefer
For King And Country: Reconsidering The Great War Soldier In Britain, 1914-1945, Nicholas John Schaefer
Master's Theses
In the postwar period historians argued that the horrors of the First World War created an irreparable disconnect between soldiers’ pre and postwar lives. Scholars led by Paul Fussell and Eric Leed presented the Great War as a futile waste of life for a meaningless cause. This historiography argues that the generation which survived the Western Front returned to Britain as jaded shells of their former selves unable to relate to their old lives and families. Bitterness and apathy replaced belief in cause and country. In contrast, recent historiography asserts that British soldiers maintained belief in their country’s cause and …
When We Were Monsters: Ethnogenesis In Medieval Ireland 800-1366, Dawn Adelaide Seymour Klos
When We Were Monsters: Ethnogenesis In Medieval Ireland 800-1366, Dawn Adelaide Seymour Klos
Master's Theses
Ethnogenesis, or the process of identity construction occurred in medieval Ireland as a reaction to laws passed by the first centralized government on the island. This thesis tracks ethnogenesis through documents relating to change in language, custom, and law. This argument provides insight into how a new political identity was rendered necessary by the Anglo-Irish. Victor Turner’s model of Communitas structures the argument as each stage of liminality represents a turning point in the process of ethnogenesis.
1169 marked a watershed moment as it began the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland. English nobles brought with them ideas of centralized power. In …
Social Cognition In Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Elyse Parke
Social Cognition In Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Elyse Parke
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, which impacts behavioral outcomes, including social functioning. Children with ADHD demonstrate impairment across a number of social domains, including aggressive behavior, poor social skills, and higher rates of Oppositional Defiant Disorder compared to typically developing peers. However, the underlying neurocognitive underpinnings of these poor social outcomes are unclear. Furthermore, little is known regarding the impact of ADHD symptomatology on aspects of social cognition. Inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity may differentially impact components of social cognition. Determining whether performance on social cognition tasks is predictive of social skills and problem behaviors is also an area …
