A More Conservative Place: Intellectual Culture In The Bush Era, Paul A. Bové Jan 2018

A More Conservative Place: Intellectual Culture In The Bush Era, Paul A. Bové

Dartmouth College Press

About the Book

Identifying the historical antecedents of President George W. Bush's imperial ambitions and the sources of the reactionary thought and politics that underlie them, Paul A. Bové shows how neoconservatism represents a singular danger to democracy. At the same time, he criticizes the equally disheartening inability of the academic Left to oppose neoconservatives and its tendency to mirror their views instead. Divorced from historical knowledge and intellectual rigor, the neocon mindset reflects a cultural and historical amnesia that feeds on ignorance and conformity. Exposing the threats to national survival inherent in the alliance of right-wing politics and academic …

Prophesy, Public Theology, And Questions Of Justice: Some Modest Reflections, Barry Sullivan Jan 2018

Prophesy, Public Theology, And Questions Of Justice: Some Modest Reflections, Barry Sullivan

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice . . . . Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.1

[T]he Church has always had the …

Fan Fiction In The English Language Arts Classroom, Kristen Finucan

MA in English Theses

Inspired by the observation of an obvious deficit in students’ comprehension of higher level literature, as well as an apparent weakness in both verbal and written critical analysis skills, this study explores the creation of collaborative fan fiction by students as they read the classic text, The Great Gatsby. Fueled by research in the areas of fan fiction, participatory culture, and cooperative learning, this inquiry took place over the course of six weeks in a high school English class comprised of 10th and 11th grade students. Throughout the study, the researcher examined student survey results, videos of students as they …

Diet Breadth Evolution And Diversification Of A Generalist Insect Herbivore, Mayra Cadorin Vidal Jan 2018

Diet Breadth Evolution And Diversification Of A Generalist Insect Herbivore, Mayra Cadorin Vidal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Insect herbivores are one of the most diverse groups of multicellular organisms, and the vast majority are specialists, which feed on only a few plant species. The factors that cause some herbivores to be specialists and others to be generalists are still unclear. It is known that the selective forces from natural enemies (top-down) and the host plants (bottom-up) influence an herbivore's diet breadth. In my meta-analysis evaluating the relative important of top-down and bottom-up forces on insect herbivore fitness, I found that herbivores usually have greater performance on better quality plants and in the absence or reduction of enemy …

Review Of Revelatory Events: Three Case Studies Of The Emergence Of New Spiritual Paths, By Ann Taves, Seth Perry Jan 2018

Review Of Revelatory Events: Three Case Studies Of The Emergence Of New Spiritual Paths, By Ann Taves, Seth Perry

Mormon Studies Review

When Ann Taves’s last monograph came out, in 2009, the journal Religion ran a review of it by Finbarr Curtis entitled “Ann Taves’s Religious Experience Reconsidered is a sign of a global apocalypse that will kill us all.”1 Curtis was worried about the effects of Taves’s unapologetically reductive approach to religion. Taves is well known as a proponent of using cognitive science and related methodologies to explain what really happens when people have religious experiences. This sort of thing, as indicated by Curtis’s title, rubs a lot of people the wrong way.

Review Of Natural Born Seer: Joseph Smith, American Prophet, 1805–1830, By Richard S. Van Wagoner, Mark Ashurst-Mcgee, Mark L. Staker

Mormon Studies Review

Around the turn of the century, Signature Books planned a series of three volumes that would cover Joseph Smith’s life in detail. Richard S. Van Wagoner was commissioned to write the first volume of the trilogy, treating the period from Smith’s birth to his move to Ohio. Van Wagoner’s Natural Born Seer: Joseph Smith, American Prophet, 1805– 1830 engages Smith’s family and cultural background, his childhood and formative years, his visionary claims, his translation of the Book of Mormon, and the organization of the Mormon church. Much of the work of Mormon history is done by amateur scholars who contribute …

Glycemic Control And Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Current Standard Treatment Vs. Closed-Loop Insulin Pumps, Kelsey Daley

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

As of 2015, 9.4% of the US population had a diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Although most of the data sets studied encompass type 1 (T1) and type 2 (T2) DM data in all ages of patients, the focus of this project will be primarily on T1DM.

There are effective methods currently available for the management of T1DM patients. These methods include: closed-loop insulin pumps that integrate a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and insulin pump into one effective system that calculates the needed insulin doses through complicated algorithms, CGM with self-blood glucose monitoring calibrations (SBGM) and insulin administration, and SBGM …

Multi-Case Study Of Antecedents Leading To Successful Nontraditional Assessment In Elementary Schools, Brett J. Boezeman

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to gain insight into antecedents of school culture which should be in place before implementing a major school change, such as moving to standards-based grading. Identifying these antecedents could give valuable insight to school district leaders and administrators that are considering a major change in pedagogy. Common themes emerged from the qualitative case study clearly identifying opportunities for school leaders to enact prior to implementing change. Schools were chosen for the study based on score from a school culture survey. One school scoring at a high level and one school scoring at …

Historical Study In The U.S.: Assessing The Impact Of Tuning Within A Professional Disciplinary Society, Daniel J. Mcinerney

History Faculty Publications

The U.S.-based American Historical Association (AHA), the largest – and most influential – professional organization for historians, was the first disciplinary society in the world to lead a Tuning project, launching its work in 2012. This essay analyzes a survey distributed to historians on campuses that have taken part in the AHA Tuning project. The purpose is to understand, after six years of work on the project, what practical difference Tuning has made for historians, students, courses, curricula, and departments. Survey data indicate that, under the disciplinary society’s guidance and encouragement, historians have created meaningful learning outcomes, implemented the objectives …

The Case Of The Missing Commentary, Brian C. Hales Jan 2018

The Case Of The Missing Commentary, Brian C. Hales

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The first published commentary on Doctrine and Covenants Section 132 is a lengthy volume with much material that deals directly with the revelation as well as extended discussions that go well beyond Joseph Smith’s dictated text. Much of the included material has been previously published, although several new historical items are presented, including a detailed examination of the provenance of the revelation. An apparent weakness of the book involves key themes mentioned in the revelation but minimized or otherwise ignored in this extended commentary. Examples include the possible meanings of the “law” (v. 6), importance of sealing authority (vv. 7‒20), …

“What Is He Whose Grief Bears Such An Emphasis?” Hamlet’S Development Of A Mourning Persona, Jennifer Lodine-Chaffey Jan 2018

“What Is He Whose Grief Bears Such An Emphasis?” Hamlet’S Development Of A Mourning Persona, Jennifer Lodine-Chaffey

Quidditas

Long viewed by scholars as destructive to his selfhood and detrimental to his swift execution of revenge, Hamlet’s concern with the outward expression of his grief actually plays an integral part in his struggles to forge a mourning identity in the wake of his father’s death. The Shakespearean prince’s attempts to faithfully perform his interior bereavement, I contend, are challenged by his father’s command to enact his mourning through outward revenge, which at first seems contrary to Hamlet’s hope to discover a mourning persona consonant with his grief. By the conclusion of the drama, though, Hamlet embraces mourning as part …

“By Small Means”: Rethinking The Liahona, Timothy Gervais, John L. Joyce Jan 2018

“By Small Means”: Rethinking The Liahona, Timothy Gervais, John L. Joyce

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The Liahona’s faith-based functionality and miraculous appearance have often been viewed as incongruous with natural law. This paper attempts to reconcile the Liahona to scientific law by displaying similarities between its apparent mechanisms and ancient navigation instruments called astrolabes. It further suggests the Liahona may have been a wedding dowry Ishmael provided to Lehi’s family. The paper displays the integral connection Nephi had to the Liahona’s functionality and how this connection more clearly explains the lack of faith displayed by Nephi’s band during the journey than traditional conceptions of its faith-based functionality.

Is The Development Of Moral Reasoning By College Students Impacted By Online Course Delivery?, Miklozek Heather Dalton

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The development of the college student is influenced inside and outside of the classroom. Research supports that the traditional college experience assists or influences the students identities relating to moral development. More and more students are completing a portion of their course work online. Yet higher Education experts are not aware of how this type of delivery impacts their moral development. In this study, Rests Defining Issues Test 2 was used to compare the moral development of on-campus and online service learning students who were enrolled in general Education and experiential learning courses. Overall findings indicate there is moral development …

Changing Critics’ Criticisms Of Book Of Mormon Changes, Brian C. Hales Jan 2018

Changing Critics’ Criticisms Of Book Of Mormon Changes, Brian C. Hales

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In early 1830 Joseph Smith published the Book of Mormon, a 269,938-word volume that discusses religious themes intermingled with a history of ancient American peoples.1 Claiming it was scripture like the Bible,2 in 1841 he declared it to be “the most correct of any book on earth and the keystone of our religion.”3 Yet, many changes in the text of the Book of Mormon can be detected when comparing the original manuscript to the version available today. These changes have served as a lightning rod for some critics who imply that a divinely inspired book should not require any alterations. …
