Creating A New World: A Historiography Of The Atlantic World, Sam Traughber May 2018

Creating A New World: A Historiography Of The Atlantic World, Sam Traughber

Tenor of Our Times

Atlantic History, the study of the transatlantic connections between Western Europe, the Americas, and West Africa during the early modern period, has grown in use and popularity in recent years. This paper follows the historiography of the Atlantic World from a 1917 article in The New Republic to the publication of a popular history on the subject with Charles C. Mann’s 2011 book 1493. It discusses developments and contributions from a wide variety of scholars including political historians, economic historians, social historians, biological historians, historiographers, and geographers as well as the influence of the transatlantic nature of the Cold War …

A Mixed-Method Case Study Of A Learning Disability Program At A Private College: Student And Staff Perceptions Of Services & Classroom Accommodations, Cynthia Y. Palmer May 2018

A Mixed-Method Case Study Of A Learning Disability Program At A Private College: Student And Staff Perceptions Of Services & Classroom Accommodations, Cynthia Y. Palmer

Education Doctoral

Although the types and availability of academic support services for college students with disabilities have greatly increased, there continues to be a lack of empirical research documenting the perceptions of college students with learning disabilities concerning appropriateness and effectiveness of support service. The mixed-method case study focused on exploring one disability support program offered at a private college from three perspectives – a student, the director (creator of the Program), and part-time staff member. The scope of the case study focused on perceptions of the classroom accommodations and disability support services as well as an examination of the retention and …

Multi-Channel Ground-Penetrating Radar For The Continuous Quantification Of Snow And Firn Density, Depth, And Accumulation, Tate Meehan May 2018

Multi-Channel Ground-Penetrating Radar For The Continuous Quantification Of Snow And Firn Density, Depth, And Accumulation, Tate Meehan

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

A priority of ice sheet surface mass balance (SMB) prediction is ascertaining the surface density and annual snow accumulation. These forcing data are inputs for firn density models and can be used to inform remotely sensed ice sheet surface processes and to assess Regional Climate Model (RCM) skill. The Greenland Traverse for Accumulation and Climate Studies (GreenTrACS) retrieved 16 shallow firn cores and dug 42 snow pits along the Western percolation zone of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) during May and June of 2016 and 2017. I deployed and maintained a multi-channel 500 MHz ground-penetrating radar in a multi-offset configuration …

Perceptions Of Barriers To Leadership Appointment And Promotion Of African American Female Commissioned Officers In The United States Military, Beverly Henderson Davis May 2018

Perceptions Of Barriers To Leadership Appointment And Promotion Of African American Female Commissioned Officers In The United States Military, Beverly Henderson Davis

Doctoral Dissertations

The U.S. military is perceived by many to be the example of workplace meritocracy, but historical studies have shown that the perceptions of African American female commissioned officers run counter to that belief. The military has as its goal the movement from a diverse fighting force to one that is totally inclusive of all members. The purpose of this study was to gather insights into whether the military has moved toward full integration from the viewpoint of the demographic that has shown the least confidence in the accomplishment of that task.

This qualitative study involved 12 participants: active duty, retired, …

The British Colonization Of Australia: An Exposé Of The Models, Impacts And Pertinent Questions, Peter Genger May 2018

The British Colonization Of Australia: An Exposé Of The Models, Impacts And Pertinent Questions, Peter Genger

Peace and Conflict Studies

By adopting the purview of Peace and Conflict Studies and the expository approach of historical archaeology of colonialism, this paper succeeds in enumerating the models the British used to establish and perpetuate colonial violence on the Indigenous Australians, and the traumatizing impacts the violence is exerting on them. The sole essence of the paper is not only to re-establish that the British colonization of Australia was deliberate, just as the heinous models they used. Most essentially, the paper identifies the following institutions: Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS), the UN and challenges them to move from their current inert condemnation of …

Women And Work: African American Women In Depression Era America, Sarah Ward May 2018

Women And Work: African American Women In Depression Era America, Sarah Ward

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This project explores whether African American women met similar public sentiments as Caucasian women during the Depression Era and how gender dynamics changed within African American households in urban America as well as the effect of the crisis on a populace that was not new to the work force. Historical statistical analysis and emphasis on labor policy are used to garner information. The Great Depression sparked an abrupt shift in not only the American economy but also American ideology regarding male and female gender dynamics. Despite discouragement from entering the workforce due to dominant masculinity, employment rates rose amongst Caucasian …

Breaking Out From Tradition: Redesign Of Large Physiology Lecture Increases Engagement, Inclusion, And Student Outcomes, Jordyn Dickey, John Redden, Kristen Kimball

Honors Scholar Theses

The human digestive system is a diverse network of cells, tissues, and organs that is regulated by intrinsic (e.g. nervous and endocrine systems) and extrinsic factors (e.g. secretions, pH, and the microbiome). Given the volume of content and the dense physiology involved, this system is difficult for instructors to teach and equally challenging for students to understand. This is especially true in our two-semester Human Anatomy and Physiology course for pre-health students at the University of Connecticut. In the Spring 2017 semester, we developed and implemented an active learning based approach when teaching the histology and regulation of gastric secretions …

When Secular Universalism Meets Pluralism: Religious Schools And The Politics Of School-Based Management In Hong Kong, Junxi Qian, Lily Kong May 2018

When Secular Universalism Meets Pluralism: Religious Schools And The Politics Of School-Based Management In Hong Kong, Junxi Qian, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article examines the politics of school-based management (SBM) in Hong Kong, with a specific focus on the conflicts between the state and three Christian churches (Catholic, Anglican, and Methodist) running state-funded religious schools. Although the state based its advocacy for SBM on neoliberally driven ideas of participation, transparency, and accountability, religious groups expressed worry about the loss of control over schools as an institution of value transmission anchored in religious beliefs. This article uses the SBM controversy as a case study to advance geographical debates on religious schools and argues that neoliberalism forms a necessary lens through which to …

Communicating History: Podcasts As Public History, Alexandra Serpikov May 2018

Communicating History: Podcasts As Public History, Alexandra Serpikov

Theses

Since the arrival of “audioblogging” in the 1980s and its transformative rise in popularity in the early 2000s, podcasts have been used to share stories and information all over the globe. History-themed podcasts in particular have grown in number, with content creators utilizing new and emerging media as platforms for dissemination of historical subjects. As a newer medium, podcasting was never specifically targeted to be an educational endeavor, yet it is sharing history through a widely accessible platform. This raises the question, are historically themed podcasts a form of public history? If they are, then how do they function as …

Religious Leadership And Political Affiliation On A Secular Midwestern Campus, Kristy Atanasov Apr 2018

Religious Leadership And Political Affiliation On A Secular Midwestern Campus, Kristy Atanasov

Honors Projects

This qualitative study explores the connection between religion and political affiliation in campus organizations from the perspective of the leaders of religious organizations on a secular Midwestern university. Interviews with ten leaders of Christian, Jewish, or Muslim organizations were utilized in gathering data. The current literature on campus religion is rarely qualitative, and fails to address specific campus religious organizations and their leaders. The results of the study found that religious affiliation is not a highly contributing factor in political affiliation, as previous quantitative studies have indicated. Ethnic, religious, and racial marginalization emerged as more significant indicators of political affiliation …

Waltrene Willis: A Montana Suffragist, Chloe F. Loeffelholz

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

I will investigate the club and suffrage work of Waltrene Willis, a resident of Thomson Falls, Glasgow and Garfield Montana between 1900 and 1920, who worked as the recording secretary for the Montana Equal Suffrage State Central Committee. I conducted research in federal census records, publications of the Glasgow Courier and The Suffrage Daily News, and the contemporary publication of the Montana Woman. My research on Waltrene Willis illustrates the range of activities that were conducted by Progressive-era women in Montana. Involved in everything from the Sunflower Art Club to Glasgow’s Political Equality League, Willis’s career serves as …

“The Good Of The Country Rises Above Party”: Roosevelt, La Guardia, And O’Connor And The Works Progress Administration In New York City During The Great Depression, Kristine Avena

Voces Novae

On May 6, 1935, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed Executive Order 7034 to create and appropriate federal funds for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the Great Depression. This agency initiated a government that was committed to serving the people and alleviating their dire conditions. By focusing on Roosevelt, New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, and New York Congressman John O'Connor, this study demonstrates the role that political relationships played in the passage of WPA agendas, the extent to which these efforts succeeded, and the significance of working across governmental levels and party lines in order to achieve their …

“Make It A Woman’S World”: The 1911 California Woman Suffrage Campaign, Sarah Smith Apr 2018

“Make It A Woman’S World”: The 1911 California Woman Suffrage Campaign, Sarah Smith

Voces Novae

The 1911 California woman suffrage campaign effectively revolutionized the ways women fought for the right to vote in the midst of the nationwide lull in suffrage campaigning, otherwise known as the "doldrums." Operating within respectable notions of femininity, California suffragists created a successful cross-cultural mass campaign to achieve their political goals in 1911. The decentralized nature of the 1911 campaign allowed for greater flexibility of tactics and ideology, ultimately allowing California suffragists to frame suffrage in economically, politically, and socially attractive terms.

Mendez Et. Al V. Westminster Et. Al’S Impact On Social Policy And Mexican-American Community Organization In Mid-Century Orange County, Jared Wallace Apr 2018

Mendez Et. Al V. Westminster Et. Al’S Impact On Social Policy And Mexican-American Community Organization In Mid-Century Orange County, Jared Wallace

Voces Novae

Several years before the famous Brown v. Board court case, Mendez v. Westminster challenged the long-held school segregation of Mexican-American students in Orange County, California. In the years following Mendez, parents of the Mexican-American students continually pressured the Orange County school districts to ensure that their children received the equal education the law had permitted. During this struggle, the Mexican-American community had a surge in political leadership and involvement. These triumphs allowed Mexican-American community members to desegregate other institutions throughout Orange County and begin a new era of race relations with their Anglo neighbors.

"To Associate Ourselves With The Men Of Ulster:" A Gendered History Of Ulster's Solemn League And Covenant And The Ulster Women's Declaration, 1910-1920, Turner Jacobs Apr 2018

"To Associate Ourselves With The Men Of Ulster:" A Gendered History Of Ulster's Solemn League And Covenant And The Ulster Women's Declaration, 1910-1920, Turner Jacobs

Voces Novae

This paper explores the gendered constitution of Ulster's Solemn League and Covenant and the Ulster Women's Declaration, two documents that were instrumental in the Ulster unionist campaign against Irish Home Rule. Composed and circulated in 1912, these documents elucidated the Unionist platform while exposing the differences in gender roles inherent in Ulster's political and social spheres. Additionally, the two documents provided the basis for a Unionist militia that included both men and women, albeit in distinctive capacities. By examining the Covenant and Declaration, a more comprehensive understanding of the anti-Home Rule campaign can be fully realized.

After The Apocalypse: A Comparative Study Of The Black Death, London Fire, And Lisbon Earthquake, Gregory Zacharia Apr 2018

After The Apocalypse: A Comparative Study Of The Black Death, London Fire, And Lisbon Earthquake, Gregory Zacharia

History Honors Projects

This thesis conducts a comparative study of historical responses to natural disasters by examining the Black Death of the fourteenth century, the 1666 Great Fire of London, and the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. In doing so, I employ an interdisciplinary framework by adapting the theory of path dependence to my analysis of prominent historical disasters. With this theoretical structure, I suggest that natural disasters cause moments of uncertainty that often produce critical junctures at key moments of development in the societies they affect. In the first and third chapters, I explore how the Black Death and the Lisbon earthquake served as …

The Question Of Power In African Pentecostalism, Alex R. Mayfield Apr 2018

The Question Of Power In African Pentecostalism, Alex R. Mayfield

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

Should the charismatic theology of anointing be considered a democratizing influence in Africa or a reiteration of mediatorial forms of power? Th is article seeks to answer this question by analyzing African traditional religious power structures in comparison to modern African theologies and practices of Pentecostal anointing. Th is comparison, however, highlights the problem of drawing direct lines from Africa’s past to its present; Pentecostal rupture from a traditional past is paradoxically both a break from and connection to pre-colonial conceptions of the self and community. Ultimately, this article argues that while both traditional religions and modern Pentecostal anointing favor …

The Imperial Legacy: An Examination Of The Trends Of Empire And Genocide From German Southwest Africa To The General Government, Laura Guebert

Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal

This project is an examination of correlations between imperial enterprises of the Second German Empire and the Nazi Reich through the lenses of global and imperial critiques. The three primary case studies are German Southwest Africa, the Ober Ost, and Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe, particularly the General Government. This research draws heavily on certain themes and theories developed by leading historians of modern German and Eastern European history, including Timothy Snyder, Ben Kiernan, Shelley Baranowski, Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius, and Christopher Browning. By understanding the shared trends of empire and genocide, it is my aim to bring the actions of the National …

An Unseen Light, Aram Goudsouzian, Charles W. Mckinney, Jr.

Civil Rights

In An Unseen Light: Black Struggles for Freedom in Memphis, Tennessee, eminent and rising scholars present a multidisciplinary examination of African American activism in Memphis from the dawn of emancipation to the twenty-first century. Together, they investigate episodes such as the 1940 "Reign of Terror" when black Memphians experienced a prolonged campaign of harassment, mass arrests, and violence at the hands of police. They also examine topics including the relationship between the labor and civil rights movements, the fight for economic advancement in black communities, and the impact of music on the city's culture. Covering subjects as diverse as politics, …
