Mormon Studies Review

America’s status as a land with a large and diverse immigrant population has long contrasted with the relatively homogenous populations of Europe. However, this situation has changed dramatically throughout Europe in recent decades. In Denmark, migrant workers and refugees from across Europe, Africa, and Asia have made for a more multicultural society.

The Roots Of The Discipline Of Public Administration: A Narrative Analysis Of Progressive Era Chicago, Michelle L. Distefano Jan 2019

The Roots Of The Discipline Of Public Administration: A Narrative Analysis Of Progressive Era Chicago, Michelle L. Distefano

ETD Archive

In The Administrative State, Dwight Waldo challenges the discipline of Public Administration to remember the purpose of or meaning behind the discipline. In response to Waldo’s question “efficiency for what?”, this dissertation interprets the motivating values of the calls for reform to the process of governance at the turn of the twentieth century in Chicago. The research uses a narrative analysis of archived and published texts of Progressive reformers from the City of Chicago. Philip Selznick’s concept of the process of institutionalization, or to infuse with value, merged with Anthony Giddens’s concept of contextuality guides the interpretation of the actions …

Litigation, Liberty, And Legitimation: The Experience Of The Church Of Scientology In Australian Law, Bernard Doherty, James T. Richardson Jan 2019

Litigation, Liberty, And Legitimation: The Experience Of The Church Of Scientology In Australian Law, Bernard Doherty, James T. Richardson

Law Papers and Journal Articles

Freedom of religion, the paradigm of freedom of conscience, is of the essence of a free society. The chief function in the law of a definition of religion is to mark out an area within which a person subject to the law is free to believe and to act in accordance with his belief without legal restraint.

Use Of Agricultural Fields By Bats, And Its Implications For Pest Control, Morgan L. Chaney Jan 2019

Use Of Agricultural Fields By Bats, And Its Implications For Pest Control, Morgan L. Chaney

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Insectivorous bats in the Midwest rely on agricultural land and adjacent forest for foraging, travel, and roosting, but how they use this landscape is not well understood. Here, I report the results of a study designed to investigate how the size and isolation of agricultural fields, and insect density, affects bat activity. I hypothesize that overall bat activity decreases with distance from the tree line, but the rate of decrease varies among species; that is to say, some species will stay near trees while others will utilize the entire field due to habitat preferences and ecomorphology. I collected insect samples …

Curiously Unique: Joseph Smith As Author Of The Book Of Mormon, Brian C. Hales Jan 2019

Curiously Unique: Joseph Smith As Author Of The Book Of Mormon, Brian C. Hales

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The advent of the computer and the internet allows Joseph Smith as the “author” of the Book of Mormon to be compared to other authors and their books in ways essentially impossible even a couple of decades ago. Six criteria can demonstrate the presence of similarity or distinctiveness among writers and their literary creations: author education and experience, the book’s size and complexity, and the composition process and timeline. By comparing these characteristics, this essay investigates potentially unique characteristics of Joseph Smith and the creation of the Book of Mormon.

And Your Little Dog Too: Witchcraft In The Cultural Imagination From The 17th To The 21st Century, Claire Craven

Theses & ETDs

Across centuries, the figure of the witch has been used to represent cultural fears and fantasies surrounding gender and power. This thesis examines the varying cultural narratives that have emerged around the archetype of the witch. Chapter One is a reading of three 17th-century English witchcraft plays, William Shakespeare’s Macbeth (1606), John Ford, Thomas Dekker and William Rowley’s The Witch of Edmonton (1621), and Richard Brome and Thomas Heywood’s The Late Lancashire Witches (1634), exploring how witchcraft was portrayed in an era when it was widely believed to exist as a real phenomenon. Chapter Two explores historical fiction written about …

Postwar Culture Beneath The Pines: The Idyllwild School Of Music And The Arts, 1946-1962, Clark Adrian Noone

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts (ISOMATA) was founded in 1946 by faculty of the University of Southern California. Located in Southern California's San Jacinto Mountain region, the school's leaders sought to create a therapeutic refuge for arts education which blended outdoor recreation, art and music workshops, and multicultural education. This thesis offers a critical analysis of ISOMATA's early growth and development by focusing on how the school's leaders tailored a liberal vision of arts education to the cultural and political mainstream of postwar Southern California.

Women In The Gambia, Cymone Fourshey Jan 2019

Women In The Gambia, Cymone Fourshey

Faculty Contributions to Books

A predominantly rural territory with few urban centers historically, the Gambia holds little in the way of well-known luxury resources commonly discussed in studies of western Africa. People of the region, in particular women, have exploited both riverine and oceanic food and material resources. The limited scholarship available on Gambian women reveals they have been essential to those endeavors contributing to economy, politics, society, and family institutions. Often by pursuing seemingly less-lucrative endeavors, women have been prominent actors innovating production and acquisition techniques as well as product uses in this mixed agricultural and aquatic economy, from precolonial to contemporary times. …

Medical Rhetoric And The Sympathetic “Inebriet”: 1870–1930, Carol Reeves Jan 2019

Medical Rhetoric And The Sympathetic “Inebriet”: 1870–1930, Carol Reeves

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The modern view of addiction as a progressive brain disease originated in the second half of the 19th and early decades of the 20th centuries. Historians attribute the shift from a moral to a medical concept to the efforts of a small but well-organized band of physicians forming what is known as the Inebriety Movement in the United States and Great Britain. Members aimed to distribute the disease theory to a disinterested and biased medical community, establish protocols for evidence-based treatments, and transfer the management of drinkers and drug users away from religious organizations and penal institutions to the care …

Unified Approaches For Frequentist And Bayesian Methods In Two-Sample Clinical Trials With Binary Endpoints, Zhenning Yu Jan 2019

Unified Approaches For Frequentist And Bayesian Methods In Two-Sample Clinical Trials With Binary Endpoints, Zhenning Yu

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Two opposing paradigms, analyses via frequentist or Bayesian methods, dominate the statistical literature. Most commonly, frequentist approaches have been used to design and analyze clinical trials, though Bayesian techniques are becoming increasingly popular. However, these two paradigms can generate divergent results even in analyses of the same trial data, which may harm the scientific interpretability of the trial. Therefore, it is crucial to harmonize analyses under each approach. In this dissertation, novel unified approaches for one-sided frequentist and Bayesian hypothesis testing problems comparing two proportions in fixed-sample and group-sequential clinical trials are proposed. When a frequentist design with desired type …

It’S Elementary: The Bayeux Tapestry As A Medieval Educational Tool, Sarah Bulger Jan 2019

It’S Elementary: The Bayeux Tapestry As A Medieval Educational Tool, Sarah Bulger

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal

The Bayeux Tapestry, a 230-foot-long, 950-year-old Anglo-Norman embroidery has baffled historians resulting in extensive (and diverse) scholarship since its rediscovery in the eighteenth century. The Bayeux Tapestry plays a preeminent role (outside of contemporaneous manuscripts and texts) in deciphering aspects of medieval life in England through its visual representation of the age of the Norman Conquest. Long-standing assumptions about the Bayeux Tapestry’s commission, production, and purpose have accumulated through the years based on a single inventory document from 1476 postulating its intended location and function as a religious ornament for Bayeux Cathedral. Modern academics have explored themes readily visible …

Conformational Dynamics Of The Nuclear Pore Complex Studied With Coarse-Grained Modelling And Polarized Light Microscopy, Joan Pulupa Jan 2019

Conformational Dynamics Of The Nuclear Pore Complex Studied With Coarse-Grained Modelling And Polarized Light Microscopy, Joan Pulupa

Student Theses and Dissertations

In my thesis work, I explored the organization and dynamics of the nuclear pore complex (NPC) through coarse-grained modelling and polarized-total internal reflection fluorescence (pol-TIRF) microscopy. The NPC is a large (~120 MDa in humans) macromolecular assembly that controls the flow of molecules into and out of the nucleus. The NPC is a key regulator of intracellular trafficking, nuclear organization, and gene expression. The study of this cellular gatekeeper is hampered by its size and complexity, as well as the difficulty of measuring protein dynamics in vivo. Although various models for how cargo translocates the NPC have been proposed, the …

A Staff Training Plan On Screening African Americans For Prediabetes, Valerie Kershaw-Berry Jan 2019

A Staff Training Plan On Screening African Americans For Prediabetes, Valerie Kershaw-Berry

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

African American adults have higher risks of undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes, uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes, and complications from Type 2 diabetes than members of other racial groups. Health care providers in rural Tennessee lack staff training plans for prediabetes screening of older African American adults. In addition, few rural Tennessee health care providers have programs in place to train staff in prediabetes screening, screening instrument use, and interventions for Type 2 diabetes prevention. The focus of this DNP project was on developing an evidence-based staff training program designed to improve knowledge regarding prediabetes screening in older African American adults. Concepts …

Carrying Little Sticks: Is There A ‘Deterrence Gap’ In Employment Standards Enforcement In Ontario, Canada?, Eric Tucker, Leah F. Vosko, Rebecca Casey, Mark P. Thomas, John Grundy, Andrea M. Noack

Articles & Book Chapters

This article assesses whether a deterrence gap exists in the enforcement of the Ontario Employment Standards Act (ESA), which sets minimum conditions of employment in areas such as minimum wage, overtime pay and leaves. Drawing on a unique administrative data set, the article measures the use of deterrence in Ontario’s ESA enforcement regime against the role of deterrence within two influential models of enforcement: responsive regulation and strategic enforcement. The article finds that the use of deterrence is below its prescribed role in either model of enforcement. We conclude that there is a deterrence gap in Ontario.

Standing On Common Ground: Applying Arendt’S Theories Of History And Education To The Effects Of National Identity Conflict On Education Policy In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Michelle Lee

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the relationship between national identity conflict and education. After considering various dynamics of national identity formation and analyzing Hannah Arendt’s position on facts, education, and segregation, and how those components relate to social trust, this study examines education in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The first chapter identifies factors that may cause shifts in national identity through a review of the literature. The second chapter constructs a framework to understand and critique how facts and models of education function in Arendt, through close readings of “Truth and Politics”, “The Crisis in Education”, and “Reflections on Little Rock”. The third …

The Ideal King: Brian Boru And The Medieval European Concept Of Kingship, Kody Whittington Jan 2019

The Ideal King: Brian Boru And The Medieval European Concept Of Kingship, Kody Whittington

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

When one thinks of great kings, and more specifically of great kings of the early medieval period, there are a few names that almost immediately come to mind. Charlemagne is perhaps the first great medieval ruler one may mention. Alfred the Great would likely not be far behind. Both these men represented, for their respective peoples, what a great king should be. The early medieval period was a time of development in thought and in practice for the office of kingship, and the writings and actions of the men of this period would have a profound influence in the following …

Civil War Memory And The Preservation Of The Olustee Battlefield, Steven Trelstad Jan 2019

Civil War Memory And The Preservation Of The Olustee Battlefield, Steven Trelstad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the absence of a Union monument at the Olustee Battlefield one hundred and fifty-five years after the battle concluded though this field has a number of Confederate monuments. Moreover, after the Battle of Olustee in February 1864, the largest battle of the Civil War fought on Florida soil, the victorious Confederates killed wounded African American soldiers left behind after the Union retreat. This thesis examines why Olustee battlefield became a place of Confederate memory, enshrining the Lost Cause within its monuments for well over a half of a century that consciously excluded any commemoration of the Union …

'A Room Of Their Own': Heritage Tourism And The Challenging Of Heteropatriarchal Masculinity In Scottish National Narratives, Carys O'Neill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the visibility of women in traditionally masculine Scottish national narratives as evidenced by their physical representation, or lack thereof, in the cultural heritage landscape. Beginning with the 1707 Act of Union between Scotland and England, a moment cemented in history, literature, and popular memory as the beginning of a Scottish rebirth, this thesis traces the evolution of Scottish national identity and the tropes employed for its assertion to paint a clearer picture of the power of strategic selectivity and the effects of sacrifice in the process of community definition. Following the transformation of the rugged Celtic Highlander …

A People So Different From Themselves: British Attitudes Towards India And The Power Dynamics Of The East India Company, Eric Gray

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Gray, Eric, A People So Different from Themselves: British Attitudes Towards India and the Power Dynamics of the East India Company. Master of Arts (History), April, 2019, Murray State University, Murray, Kentucky.

Today, many characteristics of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century British Raj are well ingrained in the public consciousness, particularly Victorian Era Britons’ general disdain for numerous aspects of the many cultures found on the Indian Subcontinent. Moreover, while many characteristics of the preceding East India Company’s rule in India were no less exploitative of Indian peoples, evidence shows a much different relationship between British and Indian cultures during the …
