Academic Feminists Analyses Of Female Celebrities From The 1980s To Today, Brittany A. Carey
Academic Feminists Analyses Of Female Celebrities From The 1980s To Today, Brittany A. Carey
Honors Theses
This thesis examines the history of academic feminists and their changing debates over race, class, sexism, and sexual preference from the 1980s to the present. In the 1980s, white feminists tended to focus on sexism in the workplace and class discrimination, while black feminists focused instead on the racism and classism that black women faced both inside and outside of academia. More recently, millennial feminists, in both third- and fourth-wave feminism, have continued to focus on racial discrimination within feminism (and broader society) while also examining women’s sexual preferences. However, they have stopped focusing on sexism in the workplace and …
‘The Healing Hand Laid On A Great Wound:’ The Elberfeld System And The Transformation Of Poverty In Germany, Britain, And The United States, Rebekah O'Zell Mcmillan
‘The Healing Hand Laid On A Great Wound:’ The Elberfeld System And The Transformation Of Poverty In Germany, Britain, And The United States, Rebekah O'Zell Mcmillan
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation employs a transnational analysis to focus on historical perceptions of poverty and the development of private and public welfare in the modern era. This research places the emergence of early poverty relief schemes within a broader transatlantic context by studying the relationships among social reformers in Germany, Great Britain, and the United States. This work has two primary objectives. First, it focuses on the Elberfeld Poor Relief System a nineteenth and early twentieth century German innovation emphasizing local poor relief and community responsibility, which transformed poor relief into an efficient structure. Second, the Elberfeld System was instrumental in …

Queering Black Greek-Lettered Fraternities, Masculinity And Manhood : A Queer Of Color Critique Of Institutionality In Higher Education., Antron Demel Mahoney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Drawing heavily on Roderick Ferguson’s (2012) theory of institutionality, this dissertation constructs a counter-historical genealogy of racialized gender in higher education and U.S. society through the formation of black Greek-lettered fraternities. Ferguson argues that with the insurgence of minority resistance globally and domestically during the mid-twentieth century, hegemonic power took a new form. Instead of rejecting minority difference, power’s new network attempted to work through and with minority difference in an effort to absorb and restrict these radical formations within state, capital and academy frameworks—producing narrow or one-dimensional minority subjectivities. Established at the turn of the twentieth century, black Greek-lettered …
Deep Imprints 20th-Century Media Stereotypes Towards East Asian Immigrants And The Development Of A Pan-Ethnic East-Asian-American Identity, Christopher Maiytt
Deep Imprints 20th-Century Media Stereotypes Towards East Asian Immigrants And The Development Of A Pan-Ethnic East-Asian-American Identity, Christopher Maiytt
Masters Theses
Existing scholarship on ethnic representation in the American film industry most prominently features Black and Latinx subject matters, with little attention devoted to Asian American depictions. In contrast, this study tracks the use of persistent stereotypes in the American film industry directed at East-Asian immigrants and the influence American racism in popular media has on the emergence of a Pan-ethnic East-Asian American identity. The first appearance of a cooperative Pan-ethnic minority group materializes during the Yellow Power Movement of the 1960s, which is followed by the emergence of East-Asian film direction en force. Analysis of these films and in the …
Synthesizing Field And Experimental Techniques To Investigate The Enigmatic Processes Occurring At The Base Of Pyroclastic Currents, Nicholas M. Pollock
Synthesizing Field And Experimental Techniques To Investigate The Enigmatic Processes Occurring At The Base Of Pyroclastic Currents, Nicholas M. Pollock
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Pyroclastic currents are the deadliest hazard associated with explosive volcanic eruptions. These gravity-driven currents consist of volcanic gases and solid particles that range in size from fine ash to boulders. The dangers associated with pyroclastic currents stem from their unpredictability and ability to travel extremely long distances, sometimes in excess of 100 km. To mitigate the risk to populations and infrastructure, we must understand the processes that control the runout distance of pyroclastic currents. The runout distance depends on the complex interplay of processes related to sediment transport, erosion, and deposition. Historically, studies focused on understanding sediment transport and deposition, …

South Texas Media Representations Of Rio Grande Valley Mexican Deportation Drives & Repatriation, 1928–1930, Evren John Turan
Theses and Dissertations
This research examines South Texas media coverage of Mexican deportation and repatriation at its genesis in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) of Texas. Summer, 1928, the RGV became the epicenter for federally ordered mass deportation raids of Mexican agricultural workers. The U.S. Border Patrol first implemented its methods of mass deportation raids and intimidation on the South Texas Mexican national population prior to Los Angeles, Post-Depression. Primary source analysis of Spanish language newspaper, La Prensa, is utilized extensively through translation. Translation of La Prensa articles was conducted by Mrs. Abby Lopez-Turan. Mrs. Lopez-Turan has a B.A. in Spanish from …
Of Faith And Faithlessness: Adaptive Fidelity In Shusaku Endo's Martin Scorsese's Silence, Teng-Kuan Ng
Of Faith And Faithlessness: Adaptive Fidelity In Shusaku Endo's Martin Scorsese's Silence, Teng-Kuan Ng
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Adapted from the 1966 novel by the Japanese Catholic writer Shusaku Endo, Martin Scorsese’s Silence offers a timely occasion for expanding the critical discourse on adaptive fidelity. This article explores the ways that both texts draw from historical and scriptural sources within the Christian tradition—most notably the biblical tale of Judas—to clarify the meaning of faith in their respective contexts. Employing Andre Bazin’s theory of adaptation, I argue that alongside their source texts, both novel and film compose an intertextual ‘ideal construct’ of religious fidelity as dynamically lived across time and place, a fidelity paradoxically performed via various modes and …
The Date Of The Muratorian Fragment: An Inference To The Best Explanation, John F. Lingelbach
The Date Of The Muratorian Fragment: An Inference To The Best Explanation, John F. Lingelbach
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Three hundred years after its discovery, scholars find themselves unable to identify the more likely of the two hypotheses regarding the date of the Muratorian Fragment, whether it is a late second- to early third-century composition or a fourth-century composition. In light of the lingering problem of the Muratorian Fragment’s date and its significance, a new study has been conducted, and this dissertation features an exposition of that study’s conduct and findings. The study sought to break the impasse and identify the more likely of the two hypotheses regarding the date of the Fragment—that it is either a late second- …

"Comme Je Trouve:" The Butlers, Earls Of Ormond, And Political Power In Kilkenny, Ireland, 1392-1452, Senia S. Foster
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
After the English-led invasion of Ireland, between 1169 and 1172, the country was run by Anglo-Irish lords—English and Welsh men gifted with Irish land and titles for their service to the English King. Of these families, the Butlers were one of the three most powerful in the country. The 3rd and 4th Earls of Ormond, both named James Butler, each held the highest title in Ireland, Lord Lieutenant, multiple times as well as being successful military leaders. Add to this a large income from all the wine revenues of the country, and the Butlers were a force to …
World Accumulation And Planetary Life, Or, Why Capitalism Will Not Survive Until The ‘Last Tree Is Cut, Jason W. Moore
World Accumulation And Planetary Life, Or, Why Capitalism Will Not Survive Until The ‘Last Tree Is Cut, Jason W. Moore
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
How does capitalism work through the web of life? How can we begin to understand capitalism not simply as an economic system of markets and production and a social system of class and culture, but as a way of organising nature? This essay explores a relational, historical, and geographical answer to these questions. Arguing that capitalism is a world-ecology that joins the accumulation of capital, the pursuit of power, and the co-production of webs of life in dialectical unity, Moore offers a way to understand today’s planetary crisis. That crisis marks a turning point not only in the planet’s climate …

It also examines which social platforms are used by archives, the number of their participants and followers, and to what extent the content of archives’ social platforms is archived. The study included twelve Arab national archives, as well as examples of foreign archives, to understand their strategy for using social networks. The study found that Arab national archives do not have …
Challenging The Biomedical Notion Of ‘Active Substance’: The Botanical Plasticity Of Tibetan Medical Formulas, Herbert Schwabl, Jan M. A. Van Der Valk
Challenging The Biomedical Notion Of ‘Active Substance’: The Botanical Plasticity Of Tibetan Medical Formulas, Herbert Schwabl, Jan M. A. Van Der Valk
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
Sowa Rigpa (Tibetan medicine) has been practiced across vast regions of Central and South Asia for centuries. In this medical tradition, it is common practice to dynamically adapt the mainly herbal formulas according to the regional flora and local conditions, and to use local variants of ingredients. Consequently, one Tibetan ingredient name within a specific formula can signify a variety of therapeutically fitting botanical items, which appear quite different from the perspective of modern taxonomy. This has led many researchers to understand the botanical plasticity of Tibetan medical formulas as misidentifications. We develop an alternative approach, exploring the advantages of …

Islamic State In Iraq And Syria (Isis) And Its Impact In Indonesia, Fredy B.L. Tobing, Erwin Indradjaja
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional
This paper presents a historical and qualitative study to examine the rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) as a force in international politics and its impacts on the dynamics of violent extremism threat in Indonesia. The rise of ISIS was a turning point from the nascent progressive shift toward democratization in the Arab world represented by the “Arab Spring,” and its influence has spread beyond Syria and Iraq to threaten regional and global security. Like in other countries in the Islamic world, Indonesian society and politics have been significantly affected by the activities of ISIS. In …
Forty Years Of Change In Southwestern Bee Assemblages, Catherine Cumberland
Forty Years Of Change In Southwestern Bee Assemblages, Catherine Cumberland
Biology ETDs
Changes in a regional bee assemblage were investigated by repeating a 1970s study from the U.S. Southwest of bees visiting native sunflower (Helianthus annuus). Results showed declines in abundance and species richness of native bees and increases in non-native Apis mellifera. Climate data indicate drought increased over the 40-year period, favoring introduced and generalist species. Experimental placement of A. mellifera in an area of low A. mellifera density in New Mexico reduced native bee visitation, but improved reproduction in H. annuus plants. Meta-analytic models comparing pollination effectiveness in specialist versus generalist, native versus non-native, and native pollinators …
The Social Documentary Photography Of Milton Rogovin, Christopher Fulton
The Social Documentary Photography Of Milton Rogovin, Christopher Fulton
Civil Rights
Milton Rogovin (1909–2011) dedicated his photographic career to capturing the humanity of working-class people around the world—coal miners, factory workers, the urban poor, the residents of Appalachia, and other marginalized groups. He worked to equalize the relationship between photographer and subject in the making of pictures and encouraged his subjects' agency by photographing them on their own terms. Rogovin's powerful insight and immense sympathy for his subjects distinguish him as one of the most original and important documentary photographers in American history.
Edited by Christopher Fulton, The Social Documentary Photography of Milton Rogovin is a multi-disciplinary study of the photographer's …
The Interaction Of Phylogeny And Community Structure: Linking The Community Composition And Trait Evolution Of Clades, William D. Pearse, Pierre Legendre, Pedro R. Peres-Neto, T. Jonathan Davies
The Interaction Of Phylogeny And Community Structure: Linking The Community Composition And Trait Evolution Of Clades, William D. Pearse, Pierre Legendre, Pedro R. Peres-Neto, T. Jonathan Davies
Ecology Center Publications
Aim
Community phylogenetic studies use information about the evolutionary relationships of species to understand the ecological processes of community assembly. A central premise of the field is that the evolution of species maps onto ecological patterns, and phylogeny reveals something more than species traits alone about the ecological mechanisms structuring communities, such as environmental filtering, competition, and facilitation. We argue, therefore, that there is a need for better understanding and modelling of the interaction of phylogeny with species traits and community composition.
Innovation
We outline a new approach that identifies clades that are ecophylogenetically clustered or overdispersed and assesses whether …

The Photoelectric Effect: Project-Based Undergraduate Teaching And Learning Optics Through A Modern Physics Experiment Redesign, Corneliu Rablau, Uma Ramabadran, Brendan Book, Robert Cunningham
Physics Presentations And Conference Materials
The photoelectric effect is a cornerstone textbook experiment in any Modern Physics or Advanced Laboratory course, designed to verify Einstein’s theory of the photoelectric effect, with the implicit determination of an experimental value for Planck’s constant and the demonstration of the particle nature of light. The standard approach to the experiment is to illuminate the light-sensitive cathode of a vacuum-tube photocell with monochromatic light of known wavelengths; a reversed-voltage is then applied to the photocell and adjusted to bring the photoelectric current to zero. The stopping voltage is then plotted as a function of the inverse wavelength or frequency of …
Examining The Evolution Of Urban Multipurpose Facilities: Applying The Ideal-Type To The Facilities Of The National Hockey League And National Basketball Association, Benjamin Downs
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The standardized versions of ice hockey and basketball emerged during the last quarter of the 19thcentury. In short order both ice hockey and basketball evolved from amateur, recreational activities to professional sport and entertainment businesses. This study analyzes, contextualizes, and discusses the layout of the urban multipurpose facilities that emerged to house both professional hockey and professional basketball, with particular attention paid to the facilities of the National Hockey League and National Basketball Association. The study uses the lens of modernization and the ideal-type heuristic device to extend Bale’s and Seifried’s facility evolution models. In addition to providing …

State Standing's Uncertain Stakes, Aziz Z. Huq
State Standing's Uncertain Stakes, Aziz Z. Huq
Notre Dame Law Review
I offer a quite modest contribution to debates on state standing. I do not offer “right answers.” Rather, I posit that it is useful to understand the “stakes” of state standing. By “stakes,” I mean the practical consequences of resolving, one way or another, the unsettled doctrinal choices respecting the ability of states to initiate a matter in federal courts. Why, that is, does state standing matter? An inquiry into stakes can usefully proceed stepwise. A first task is to identify the subset of state standing cases that presently elicit division among the Justices. A second task is to articulate …
The Nauvoo Music And Concert Hall, Darrell Babidge
The Nauvoo Music And Concert Hall, Darrell Babidge
BYU Studies
On many an evening in 1845, anyone near the corner of Woodruff and Young Streets in Nauvoo, Illinois, would have heard music coming from the newly constructed Music and Concert Hall (fig. 1). The following year, the music making abruptly stopped as thousands of Nauvoo residents fled from mob violence, abandoned the city, and began their journey westward to the Great Salt Lake. Today on the same corner is an empty grassy area where children often play. This article seeks to tell the history of the Nauvoo Music and Concert Hall. This hall points to the lifeblood of music and …

Introduction To Transoceanic America: Risk, Writing, And Revolution In The Global Pacific, Michelle Burnham
Introduction To Transoceanic America: Risk, Writing, And Revolution In The Global Pacific, Michelle Burnham
English
Transoceanic America offers a new approach to American literature by emphasizing the material and conceptual interconnectedness of the Atlantic and Pacific worlds. These oceans were tied together economically, textually, and politically, through such genres as maritime travel writing, mathematical and navigational schoolbooks, and the relatively new genre of the novel.
Especially during the age of revolutions in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, long-distance transoceanic travel required calculating and managing risk in the interest of profit. The result was the emergence of a newly suspenseful form of narrative that came to characterize capitalist investment, political revolution, and novelistic plot. …

The Terror Pandemic: The International Diffusion Of Terrorism, Stephen Michael Chicoine
The Terror Pandemic: The International Diffusion Of Terrorism, Stephen Michael Chicoine
Theses and Dissertations
The online recruitment efforts of ISIS have raised questions about the new role of the internet in the spread of terrorism. However, the use of the mass media by terrorist groups to recruit and spread is not unique to ISIS or the digital age and has been an aspect of terrorism since its modern conception. To explain the spread of terrorism historically and understand the unique dimensions of terrorism and the internet, a cultural explanation is proposed to explain the process through terrorism spreads as well as the content that inspires violence. This study includes two major parts: a virtual …
