Until Justice Be Done: America’S First Civil Rights Movement, From The Revolution To Reconstruction, Ben Davidson Jan 2021

Until Justice Be Done: America’S First Civil Rights Movement, From The Revolution To Reconstruction, Ben Davidson

Civil War Book Review

Masur contends historians have overlooked a decades’-long, Black-led civil rights movement that flourished in the nineteenth century. "Until Justice Be Done is necessary reading for any scholar of U.S. history,” and is a book that should "receive a wide readership beyond academia,” as Masur’s “non-polemical” examination of citizenship rights “may well challenge those of various political stripes to reexamine their idea and strategies for honoring, changing, or using the Constitution.”

Game Changing Leadership: Developing A Student Athlete Leadership Identity Development Model, Sally Gates Parish Jan 2021

Game Changing Leadership: Developing A Student Athlete Leadership Identity Development Model, Sally Gates Parish

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

There are several theoretical models and approaches to define the leadership identity development of college students, however, none of these models adequately frame the specific leadership identity development of collegiate student athletes. The purpose of this grounded theory study is to develop a leadership model to address this gap by explaining the leadership values and behaviors unique to student athletes and to understand if their leadership experiences occur in a staged, scaffolded way. The research questions guiding this study are: What are the staged, scaffolded leadership identity development experiences of collegiate student athletes? What are the common leadership values and …

The Danite Constitution And Theories Of Democratic Justice In Frontier America, Benjamin E. Park Jan 2021

The Danite Constitution And Theories Of Democratic Justice In Frontier America, Benjamin E. Park

BYU Studies

Most modern Americans define liberty as the freedom to do things: freedom to speak, freedom to congregate, freedom to vote, freedom to worship. That is, we define it in proactive terms. But in early America, many citizens were just as likely to define liberty as freedom from things: freedom not to be taxed without representation, freedom not to be unjustly imprisoned, or freedom not to be oppressed. In other words, they defined it in preventive terms. And among Americans in the 1830s, per- haps the most poignant political discussion concerned the freedom to not be forcibly removed from the land …

Signs Of The Times: Racism, Tribalism, And Disinformation Before The Comings Of Christ, Luke Drake Jan 2021

Signs Of The Times: Racism, Tribalism, And Disinformation Before The Comings Of Christ, Luke Drake

BYU Studies

Each of the major narrators/compilers of the Book of Mormon evince varying degrees of understanding that their work is destined for modern readers who would face a set of modern concerns.2 This essay suggests that Mormon’s editorial hand—on display both in the redaction of the words of Samuel the Lamanite and in the narration of the events surrounding Samuel’s ministry—can be understood to address pressing issues faced by latter-day readers: specifically, the perils posed by racism, “tribalism,” and disinformation.

Understanding How Experienced World History Teachers In Minnesota Choose Course Content: A Mixed Methods Study, Kathleen Ferrero Jan 2021

Understanding How Experienced World History Teachers In Minnesota Choose Course Content: A Mixed Methods Study, Kathleen Ferrero

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Education in the United States has consistently utilized tests as well as a relatively standard curriculum to educate the youth. However, the introduction of the No Child Left Behind Act and the subsequent implementation of the Common Core State Standards Initiative, has created an educational environment focused largely on math and literacy skills. This mixed methods study discovered the primary factors experienced world history teachers in Minnesota utilize to balance historical thinking skills and the inclusion of current events against national and statewide curricular standards. Five experienced teachers were interviewed, and their responses coded using qualitative methods. These themes informed …

Reams, Radicals And Revolutionaries: The 'Illinois Staats-Zeitung' And The German-American Milieu In Chicago, 1847-1877, Sebastian Peter Wuepper Jan 2021

Reams, Radicals And Revolutionaries: The 'Illinois Staats-Zeitung' And The German-American Milieu In Chicago, 1847-1877, Sebastian Peter Wuepper

Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes how a large, German-language newspaper, the Illinois Staats-Zeitung served the German-American immigrant community in Chicago in the second half of the nineteenth century. The German diaspora in the United States was not a secluded, separated, and isolated entity, but a node in a transnational network of cultural exchange that crossed national and natural boundaries. Newspapers contributed significantly to the creation and maintenance of this cultural sphere. The editors of the Staats-Zeitung were refugees of the failed 1848 democratic revolutions in Germany. In Germany they had been academics, intellectuals, lawyers and journalists. They brought their political convictions with …

Combating The Effects Of War Remnants In Africa: A Case Of Landmines In Zimbabwe, Fradreck Jockonia Mujuru

Young African Leaders Journal of Development

The war remnants especially landmines from the Zimbabwe Liberation struggle that ended in 1980 is killing, maiming and haunting the people and animals. With these landmines, the security of the people is at risk in seven major areas: Mukumbura, Musengezi, Mazowe, Sheba forest, Rusitu, Sango and Lusuku. Zimbabwe is said to be heavily contaminated with landmines. Though the demining missions with five different organisations have kick-started their operations, minute progress has been made. Landmines are destroying the lives of people and animals creating societies unsafe for development. Zimbabwe needs to engage in accelerated demining actions. Furthermore, she needs to correct …

The Impact Of Forced Migration On The Antebellum Enslaved Family On The Cotton Frontier, Micki Yvonne Kaleta Jan 2021

The Impact Of Forced Migration On The Antebellum Enslaved Family On The Cotton Frontier, Micki Yvonne Kaleta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation examines the movement of enslaved people in the antebellum United States from the Upper South to the cotton frontier of the Deep South and the impact that forced relocation had on family formation over time. This move took an entire generation of slaves and artificially placed them together, often with little thought of their desires or needs. Slaves, typically young and strong of back wherein to manage the extreme labor demands of cotton cultivation, often did not have the benefit of older family members with which to learn and gain generational knowledge in the early years of the …

Biblical Concepts In Action: A Case For Discipleship In The Worship Ministry, Wendall D. Reed Jan 2021

Biblical Concepts In Action: A Case For Discipleship In The Worship Ministry, Wendall D. Reed

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative historical study is to examine the discipleship of the worship ministry in the local church according to biblical principles of discipleship. Despite the biblical examples of discipleship benefits, worship ministry personnel are often not included in discipleship efforts from church leadership. The leadership and the congregation alike may assume their spiritual maturity. The preaching ministry and the worship ministry are the most public act of worship viewable by congregants. Some worship ministry volunteers and staff may feel they are expected to have already been discipled and may be reluctant to pursue discipleship engagement. This study …

Relationship Between Criminal Behavior And High School Equivalency Program Completion, Lashawnda Cabey - Washington Jan 2021

Relationship Between Criminal Behavior And High School Equivalency Program Completion, Lashawnda Cabey - Washington

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

High School Equivalency (HSE) Programs operate in response to the national increase in high school dropout rates. These alternative learning methods are attractive to nontraditional high school students because they are designed to accommodate students who are unable to complete their high school diploma via the traditional classroom setting. However, even though these programs continue to thrive in many communities, many students are still unsuccessful at completing these programs. Therefore, there is a need to research the possible factors that prevent students from earning the equivalent of a high school diploma or general education diploma (GED) via these programs. Grounded …

What Is The Underlying Cause Of Infantile Colic?, Tamar Itzkowitz Jan 2021

What Is The Underlying Cause Of Infantile Colic?, Tamar Itzkowitz

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Infantile colic (IC) is an important area of current research due to the extreme distress it causes parents and their infants. It is vital that a cause is isolated so that treatment can be found because IC is a risk factor for child abuse. In this paper, two major theories were posed to elucidate the underlying cause of IC—the gastrointestinal model and the neurological model. The gastrointestinal model suggests that IC stems from issues such as an immature gut. The neurological model suggests that infantile migraines are the causative agents of IC. Both theories supply correlational evidence but are subject …

Hymnals As Historical Documents: A Contextualisation Of The Church Hymnal And Its Representation Of The Church Of Ireland And Its People 1864–1919, Nicole Robinson Jan 2021

Hymnals As Historical Documents: A Contextualisation Of The Church Hymnal And Its Representation Of The Church Of Ireland And Its People 1864–1919, Nicole Robinson

Doctoral

Congregational hymn-singing has played a central role in the worship of the Church of Ireland for centuries. This dissertation takes into account the first three editions of the Church Hymnal, published between 1864 and 1919, and discusses the reasons behind their publication before analysing their content with regard to main themes, sources, and contributors. The information acquired through this analysis is then looked at within the wider context of the times in which they were published. This contextualisation unlocks broader themes within the hymnals relating to the Church of Ireland, not just as a religious denomination, but as a …

Soul Liberation: Black Christian Intellectual Engagement With Black Power, Jemar Tisby Jan 2021

Soul Liberation: Black Christian Intellectual Engagement With Black Power, Jemar Tisby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the Civil Rights movement, Black Christians figured prominently as clergy, leaders, and foot soldiers in the struggle. As a result, the presence of Black Christians during this phase of the Black activism is well-documented by historians. During the Black Power era, however, scholars tend to overlook the ongoing presence and significance of Black Christians in the movement. Soul Liberation corrects this omission by studying Black Christian engagement during the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 1970s.

Characterizing Forest Stands Using Unmanned Aerial Systems (Uas) Digital Photogrammetry: Advancements And Challenges In Monitoring Local Scale Forest Composition, Structure, And Health, Benjamin T. Fraser Jan 2021

Characterizing Forest Stands Using Unmanned Aerial Systems (Uas) Digital Photogrammetry: Advancements And Challenges In Monitoring Local Scale Forest Composition, Structure, And Health, Benjamin T. Fraser

Doctoral Dissertations

Present-day forests provide a wide variety of ecosystem services to the communities that rely on them. At the same time, these environments face routine and substantial disturbances that direct the need for site-specific, timely, and accurate monitoring/management (i.e., precision forestry). Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS or UAV) and their associated technologies offer a promising tool for conducting such precision forestry. Now, even with only natural color, uncalibrated, UAS imagery, software workflows involving Structure from Motion (SfM) (i.e., digital photogrammetry) modelling and segmentation can be used to characterize the features of individual trees or forest communities. In this research, we tested the …

Becoming Scientists: Undergraduate Students' Literacy Activities In Laboratory Education, Allison Giannotti Jan 2021

Becoming Scientists: Undergraduate Students' Literacy Activities In Laboratory Education, Allison Giannotti

Doctoral Dissertations

In laboratory courses across universities, undergraduate students are learning to act, think, and write like professional scientists. Yet, despite the centrality of language and literacy in laboratory experiments, the process of becoming scientifically literate remains ambiguous. Thus, my dissertation examines how university laboratory courses foster undergraduate students’ emergence as literate professionals and competent communicators in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. In particular, it examines undergraduate students’ literate practices, how they change over time, and how they are affected by material and experimental processes in three sequenced, chemistry laboratory courses. Through laboratory observations and interviews with undergraduate students, faculty, …

Tilting Toward Freedom: African American Ring Tournaments In A Postbellum South, Lauren S. Hanson, Carmen Harris Jan 2021

Tilting Toward Freedom: African American Ring Tournaments In A Postbellum South, Lauren S. Hanson, Carmen Harris

University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal

The ring tournament is an American version of the medieval jousting tradition that had been reserved for the white wealthy planter elite in America for generations. After the Civil War it became an African American cultural practice, whose history has been all but lost to time. Immediately following emancipation, ex-slaves across the South began hosting and participating in ring tournaments through which they asserted their agency while harnessing the sport’s ability to empower the riders and their communities. The tournaments also influenced local politics and challenged power structures. In essence, the black tournaments became a symbol of freedom. The figure …

The Lost History Of Delegation At The Founding, Christine Chabot Jan 2021

The Lost History Of Delegation At The Founding, Christine Chabot

Faculty Publications & Other Works

The new Supreme Court is poised to bring the administrative state to a grinding halt. Five Justices have endorsed Justice Gorsuch's dissent in Gundy v. United States--an opinion that threatens to invalidate countless regulatory statutes in which Congress has delegated significant policymaking authority to the Executive Branch. Justice Gorsuch claimed that the “text and history” of the Constitution required the Court to replace a longstanding constitutional doctrine that permits broad delegations with a more restrictive one. But the supposedly originalist arguments advanced by Justice Gorsuch and like-minded scholars run counter to the understandings of delegation that prevailed in the Founding …

Reimbursement Of Mental Health Service For Individuals Seeking Services At Primary Care Facilities, Keith Avant Jan 2021

Reimbursement Of Mental Health Service For Individuals Seeking Services At Primary Care Facilities, Keith Avant

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the relationship between primary care services, mental health services, patient visits, and insurance reimbursement for individuals with a mental health diagnosis who visit primary care facilities. The theoretical integrated theory of health behavior changes has been vital in identifying the contributing factors to the relationship between primary care, mental health services, and insurance reimbursement. The research questions explored whether any relationship existed between mental health diagnosis and office visits, outpatient versus inpatient, the amount paid for treatment, and reimbursement of services. This study used a quantitative approach along with a Pearson …

Korean ‘Comfort Women’ Of Wwii: Cultural Trauma And Formation Of National Identity (2021), Rachel Adamek Jan 2021

Korean ‘Comfort Women’ Of Wwii: Cultural Trauma And Formation Of National Identity (2021), Rachel Adamek

International Studies Undergraduate Honors Theses

For centuries, the peoples of the Korean Peninsula and the island of Japan have had a turbulent history; one of conflict and occupation, cultural and economic trade, and much more. However, many would agree that the most definable moment for current South Korean and Japanese relations is the Japanese Annexation and Occupation of Joseon Korea from 1910-1945. Japanese rule consisted of atrocities and war crimes, economic exploitation, erasure of Korean culture, and military sexual slavery; the victims referred to as ‘comfort women’. Japanese forced sexual slavery not only affected relations between the island and peninsula, but it also deeply affected …

How Bavinck Responds To The Challenges Of The Theory Of Evolution: The Primacy Of Biblical Revelation, Isaias D'Oleo Ochoa Jan 2021

How Bavinck Responds To The Challenges Of The Theory Of Evolution: The Primacy Of Biblical Revelation, Isaias D'Oleo Ochoa

CTS Student Publications and Creative Works

In his discussion of evolution, Bavinck offers a modified theory of development, rooted not under a mechanistic and naturalistic worldview, as Darwin does, but under a “theistic-friendly” framework. This article argues that Bavinck’s discussion of evolution as a whole endorses a modified Aristotelian/ Thomistic framework in order to understand the theory of development, and thus overcomes the challenges raised by Darwin’s naturalistic worldview to biblical revelation.

To do so, we use a digital legal history approach, combining robust court data, text mining techniques, and expert word classification, using a set of custom open-source tools and open data.

Refugee Health, Healthcare, And Resettlement In New Haven, Connecticut: A Historical Study With Contemporary Implications, Ezra Lichtman Jan 2021

Refugee Health, Healthcare, And Resettlement In New Haven, Connecticut: A Historical Study With Contemporary Implications, Ezra Lichtman

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Nationally, there is no single clinic model for the provision of healthcare to refugees, and the field of refugee health is perpetually in flux. However, in the New Haven area, there is a well-established system of resettlement, health screening, and healthcare integration for newly arrived refugees. A local agency secures housing, provides education and social opportunities, and coordinates medical visits. And Yale-New Haven Hospital holds adult and pediatric screening clinics for refugees. The origins of this local system lie in the late 1970s and 1980s, when Soviet Jewish and Southeast Asian refugees began to relocate to New Haven in large …

The Great Southern Buy-Back: The Colony Of Western Australia And The Great Southern Railway 1880-1897, Thomas Goode Jan 2021

The Great Southern Buy-Back: The Colony Of Western Australia And The Great Southern Railway 1880-1897, Thomas Goode

Theses

This thesis examines the circumstances surrounding the building of the Great Southern Railway as a land-grant railway in the colony of Western Australia in the 1880s and its purchase by the government in 1896. In the early 1880s the steamship companies bringing mail and passengers from overseas and the eastern colonies, preferred Albany to Fremantle, adding an uncomfortable three to four day journey to the capital Perth. To overcome this difficulty, the government proposed to build a railway from Albany to the existing network at Beverley. This railway was to be funded by grants of land to the private company …

The History Of Congressional Apportionment, Charles M. Biles Jan 2021

The History Of Congressional Apportionment, Charles M. Biles

Trade & Scholarly Monographs

NEW REVISED SECOND EDITION.

The Congressional apportionment problem is deceptively easy to state: How many seats in the U. S. House of Representatives does each state get? To answer that question, Charles Biles, award-winning Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Humboldt State University, examines the math and politics that has shaped government and power from the founding of the country to the modern day.

Employing an interdisciplinary approach that stems from his research in mathematical modeling and the modeling of natural resource systems, Biles tells a flowing evolutionary tale of how slight changes in calculating apportionment has wrought massive shifts in …
