Preparing Preservice Teachers By Building Content And Pedagogical Knowledge Of Integrating Technologies, Patrice Morgan
Preparing Preservice Teachers By Building Content And Pedagogical Knowledge Of Integrating Technologies, Patrice Morgan
Publications and Research
After the declaration of Covid-19 outbreak in March 2020, the system of education changed from traditional field experiences to virtual environment of online learning. As per the need of time, this paper discusses the methods of online learning that learners and educators use to keep up with the flow of education. With the complete incorporation of technology in the educating system, the challenges and training support provided to preservice and in-service teachers is the vital essence to deliver beneficial impacts. However, delivering education with proper expertise in specialized software such as Google Classrooms, Zoom, TV school, online portals, Microsoft teams, …

Critical Race Theory And Florida Schools: An Attempt To Suppress Racism Embedded Within American History
Florida A & M University Law Review
“Our Constitution is colorblind, and neither knows nor tolerates classes among its citizens.” Imagine that a public school student learns that the curriculum taught at their school about their culture and its history has just been banned. Further, they discover that the reasoning for the removal is the belief that the curriculum promotes reverse racism. Imagine this happening only to classes related to their culture and background, but similar courses teaching the history and experiences of other cultures remain untouched, unbanned, and unaddressed. History is the story of the past and tells us where we are, where we come from, …
Educational Myths Of An American Empire: Colonial Narratives And The Meriam Report, Madhu Narayanan
Educational Myths Of An American Empire: Colonial Narratives And The Meriam Report, Madhu Narayanan
Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations
The Meriam Report is a remarkable historical artifact of the United States' colonial project. The idea of a stronger nation through education embodied in the report betrays the report's imperial core. The report's authors express moral outrage at the failure of the United States to respect the human dignity of Native Americans. To absolve these failures, the report repeatedly looks to education as the way forward. My interest is in the discursive construction of that argument, specifically how new discourses of progress, scientific management, and modern administrative principles were used to justify expansion of the federal government and solidify the …
Black October: The Migration Of Black Americans To The Soviet Union In The Interwar Period, Alice Volfson
Black October: The Migration Of Black Americans To The Soviet Union In The Interwar Period, Alice Volfson
Slavic Studies Honors Papers
Through an in-depth look at first-person accounts, primary documents, and archival research, this project broadens the scope of information available about the interwar migration of Black Americans to the Soviet Union for agricultural, industrial, and artistic initiatives which helped advance the Socialist Project. These men and women had different motivations for their emigration stemming from racial solidarity with various Soviet peoples, economic reasonings, and safety from American racism. This paper hopes to bring to life the stories of those whose legacies have been lost to history by uncovering their lives under communism, their achievements and recognitions, and that of their …

Gender, Sex, And The Body In Medieval Armenia, Ashley Bozian
Gender, Sex, And The Body In Medieval Armenia, Ashley Bozian
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates textual representation of the body, gender, and sexuality in Armenian chronicles produced between the fifth and eleventh centuries CE. In so doing, it reconstructs the development of Armenian somatology between Zoroastrian and Islamic suzerainties. Specifically, the dissertation examines the modalities by which the body functioned to medieval Armenian cognition as the locus of identity and alterity through the deployment of such devices as the following, to each of which is devoted a chapter: masculinity, femininity, archetypes of sexual morality, legislation of sexual conduct, sexual experientiality (in both temporal and eschatological dimensions), anatomy, and violence. As such, the …

The Idea Of Unconscionability In Equitable Adjudication And Its Variegated Manifestations In The Louisiana Territory, Pre-1900, Edad Mercier
Theses and Dissertations
The history of American law in the nineteenth century reveals how antislavery activism, Westward expansionism, labor, and women’s rights activism tested the boundaries, strength, and authority of the federal government over states and individuals. At the turn of the nineteenth century, as people resisted against their social position during one of the most turbulent periods in American history prior to the Civil War, American law simultaneously evolved to recognize and delineate the private and public rights of individuals and communities. My dissertation explains how informal and formal socio-legal customs were used to resolve major ethical, social, and contractual disputes arising …
"All Barriers Are Broken Down": The Pastoral Path Of Evangelist Ida Sherman Womeldorf, Lisa R. Lindell
"All Barriers Are Broken Down": The Pastoral Path Of Evangelist Ida Sherman Womeldorf, Lisa R. Lindell
Hilton M. Briggs Library Faculty Publications
A convergence of factors enabled Ida Sherman Womeldorf to forge a successful, if unlikely, career as a Baptist evangelist and preacher in Deadwood, South Dakota and other sites in the American West. Actualizing her ministerial path in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were her own personal qualities, the rise of the Progressive reform movement, the local autonomy practiced by her denomination, and openness in the West to her unconventional role. Her story as it intersects with the mores and movements of her time and place builds upon and broadens the historical narrative of evangelical women in ministry.

Psychology Or Religion? Bridge-Building In The Translation History Of The Tibetan Book Of The Dead, Erin Prophet
Psychology Or Religion? Bridge-Building In The Translation History Of The Tibetan Book Of The Dead, Erin Prophet
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
The Tibetan Book of the Dead is one of the most popular Eastern scriptures in the West, in part because it has been framed outside of religion, as a kind of psychology. And yet its translators have also used it to stake claims in the debate about the relationship between psychology and religion, generally Buddhism, but also Theosophy, a religious and philosophical system founded in 1875, which tried to unify all religions. The first major English translation of the Book of the Dead was published in 1927, by W. Y. Evans-Wentz, who was a Theosophist, with the assistance of Kazi …

Archival Enterprise Across Early Modern Europe: A Review Essay, Kristen J. Nyitray
Archival Enterprise Across Early Modern Europe: A Review Essay, Kristen J. Nyitray
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
In the early modern era, archives were a conduit for information transfer across Europe. Historians have increasingly centered archives and archivists as actors in scholarship of Early Modern European (c. 1450-1800) historical concerns. In particular, two linked areas of inquiry have been emphasized: the impact of archives on forming European identities, and the influence of European archivists on shaping archives. Studies of archives are rich sources that tease out ideological shifts in early modern times. This essay discusses recent literature and seminal writings contributing to understandings of emergent archives and archival practices across Early Modern Europe. Exploring the concept of …
The Texas Coast: Ship Channel Network Of The Petroleum Age, Alan Lessoff
The Texas Coast: Ship Channel Network Of The Petroleum Age, Alan Lessoff
Faculty Publications – History
This article provides an overview of the Texas Gulf Coast as a port city region dedicated above all to oil and gas. By the late 1800s, the same trends in transportation and industry that encouraged ship channel construction around the world drew attention to schemes to transform the Gulf Coast’s shallow bays and estuaries into inland deep-water harbors. An added factor in Texas was the vulnerability of Galveston and other coastal locations to hurricanes. Between 1902, when construction began on the 52-mile Houston Ship Channel, and the 1950s–60s, when a deep-water channel opened at Matagorda Bay along the mid-Texas coast, …
Paternal Affliction: Emotions And Masculinity Among Eighteenth-Century Italian Jewish Merchants, Francesca Bregoli
Paternal Affliction: Emotions And Masculinity Among Eighteenth-Century Italian Jewish Merchants, Francesca Bregoli
Publications and Research
This essay focuses on the “rhetoric of paternal affliction” that late eighteenthcentury
Italian Jewish merchant patriarchs employed in letters and supplications
addressing threats to their intertwined paternal and commercial authority,
particularly when filial disobedience or apostasy was involved. I examine this
rhetoric as an emotional style that illuminates Jewish merchant masculinity.
Although the image of a suffering father seems to deviate from known early
modern models of hegemonic masculinity, within the context of the eighteenthcentury
culture of sensibility this rhetoric emphasized Jewish patriarchs’ honesty
and righteousness, beseeching male compassion and sympathy. By performing
vulnerability vis-à-vis Jewish associates, as well as …
An Investigation And Practical Reconstruction Of Brushstroke Pottery In The Style Of The 18th Century Seminoles Of Florida, Claire Stout
An Investigation And Practical Reconstruction Of Brushstroke Pottery In The Style Of The 18th Century Seminoles Of Florida, Claire Stout
Theses & ETDs
This study examines the sherds at the New College of Florida Public Archaeology Lab to investigate brush stroke and other surface treatment methods on native Flordian ceramics. Sherds from the Public archaeology lab were examined with both a dissection microscope and loupe, then their observed patterns were compared to experimental patterns on natural clay pots made by the author. These pots were made in the style of 18th century Seminole Floridian pottery. A summary of the geology and chemistry of clay were included, as well as an examination of the history of Native Floridian peoples so as to better understand …
An Investigation Into Harmful Algal Bloom Contributors, Isabella Chandler
An Investigation Into Harmful Algal Bloom Contributors, Isabella Chandler
Theses & ETDs
These projects span a two-year time period in which phytoplankton was sampled from Sarasota Bay. Samples were examined in order to find potential harmful algal bloom (HAB) contributors in addition to the commonly reported Karenia brevis. It was identified that both Gonyaulax and Pseudo-nitzschia genera found in The Bay could also be contributing to HAB events in Sarasota Bay. The first study (Chapter 1) spanned a year (2021) and looked at differences in the three groups' distribution at three different sites. This study found that Gonyaulax is an abundant organism and could be contributing to the HABs in the area. …
Indecent Bodies In Early Modern Visual Culture: An Introduction, Fabian Jonietz, Mandy Richter, Alison Stewart
Indecent Bodies In Early Modern Visual Culture: An Introduction, Fabian Jonietz, Mandy Richter, Alison Stewart
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity
Indecency ‒ the polar opposite of propriety, appropriateness, respectability, decorum ‒ has played a central role in our understanding of Early Modern cultural norms since the beginning of art history as an academic field in the nineteenth century. Accordingly, the concept of indecency was fundamental to historical and contemporary discourses that attempted to balance social limits on indecorous behaviour and images. At the same time, the appeal of such visual imagery, the attraction of graphic depictions of bodies and their actions, resulted in conflicting responses on the part of viewers. Historically, decency and indecency played defining roles in both the …
Overdue Credit: Credit Management, Crime, And Immigrants In Early Twentieth Century United States, Enrique Salas-Limon
Overdue Credit: Credit Management, Crime, And Immigrants In Early Twentieth Century United States, Enrique Salas-Limon
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This thesis uses the theory of racial capitalism to examine the joined histories of Arab American immigrants and the professionalization of credit management in the early twentieth century. The history of early Arab Americans has previously been told as a clichéd story of upward mobility and financial success without much documented interaction between the Arab immigrant and real economic institutions, such as banks and credit bureaus. This thesis brings to light previously unknown documentations of Arab American and Arab immigrant alleged criminals in the publications of the National Association of Credit Men, or NACM. As the largest credit management and …
Risk Factors And Outcomes Of Acute Kidney Injury Among Covid-19 Patients At A Tertiary Hospital In Kenya, Susan Cheruiyot
Risk Factors And Outcomes Of Acute Kidney Injury Among Covid-19 Patients At A Tertiary Hospital In Kenya, Susan Cheruiyot
Master of Medicine in Family Medicine
Background: Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), a novel infection caused by the SARS-Cov-2 virus, was declared a global pandemic on March 11, 2020. Three years later, 350,000 Kenyans had gotten the infection, with approximately 5,700 reported related deaths. Despite emerging research on the new virus, studies from the African continent on the impact of COVID-19 on the kidneys have been few. Early studies suggest that up to 75% of patients with COVID-19 have a derangement in their kidney function as evidenced by new onset proteinuria and hematuria. That said, the prevalence of acute kidney injury has varied greatly across populations, …
The Stench Of Miasma And The Fragrance Of Daffodils: Reconstructing Historical Scentscapes In Mesopotamia, Samantha N. Levy
The Stench Of Miasma And The Fragrance Of Daffodils: Reconstructing Historical Scentscapes In Mesopotamia, Samantha N. Levy
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
My thesis interrogates the role that the sense of smell plays in the experience of place, arguing that scent has been virtually ignored in public history contexts. The thesis will review the foundational scholarship on the history of the senses and relate the findings of interdisciplinary research that demonstrates how the senses alter one's understanding of the environment and even the formation of memories. This work is relevant to the field of public history since smell can be used to captivate the public in a memorable—and potentially more authentic—engagement with the Mesopotamian past. To address gaps in the present scholarship, …
Leadership And Military Power – Can A Leadership Approach Provide A Competitive Advantage?, Lawrence E. Skelly Iii
Leadership And Military Power – Can A Leadership Approach Provide A Competitive Advantage?, Lawrence E. Skelly Iii
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024
Leadership and Military Power – Can a Leadership Approach Provide a Competitive Advantage? When does a military commander's leadership approach give his or her unit a performance advantage? U.S. Army senior leaders have asserted that forces led using the mission command approach will have an edge in future combat. Mission command decentralizes decision-making to empower subordinates to react more successfully and seize battlefield opportunities. American forces have struggled to employ mission command partly because of a lack of understanding of the approach. This study applied two concepts from organizational psychology, empowering leadership and directive leadership, to better define and examine …
Social Networks And Self-Efficacy Among Hawaiian Homeless, Blake Shavers
Social Networks And Self-Efficacy Among Hawaiian Homeless, Blake Shavers
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractHomelessness affects over half a million people in the United States and millions worldwide. While permanent supportive housing initiatives like Housing First have successfully improved homeless wellbeing, recent research has shown that housing alone is not a solution; it requires add-on programming to assist in mitigating the causal factors. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the social networking and self-efficacy of currently homeless and those who have successfully transitioned to supportive housing in the unique social and geographical environment of O’ahu, Hawai’i. A phenomenological study design using criterion sampling for semi structured interviews of four houseless …
