Displacement Of The Rohingyas Of Myanmar, Land Grabbing, And Extractive Capital, Afroza Anwary
Displacement Of The Rohingyas Of Myanmar, Land Grabbing, And Extractive Capital, Afroza Anwary
The Journal of Social Encounters
Research on the displacement of the Rohingya from their property has paid little attention to how the government’s land policies encourage various actors to seize that land and extract resources. This research is based on interviews with Rohingya refugees, reports from the United Nations and humanitarian agencies, and published academic work. Economic, social, and political factors are responsible for the displacement of Rohingyas. To argue that a single factor is responsible for their displacement would be incorrect, as research reveals a more complicated interaction of social forces. However, this paper considers the unique dynamics of land grabbing, land laws, ethnic …

The Turkish-Greek Conflict Over The Island Of Cyprus, Luma Sultan Farhan Rawashdeh, Mohammad Hamad Mostafa Alqatatsheh
Journal of the Association of Arab Universities for Research in Higher Education مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للبحوث في التعليم العالي
The study aimed to propose an overview of the history and stages of the Greek-Turkish conflict over the island of Cyprus, to highlight the international powers position towards it. The study used a comprehensive in-depth methodology that consisted of the historical approach, the descriptive analytical approach, and the decision-making approach, in addition to apply a number of conflict analysis tools. The study revealed that the most important causes of the Greek-Turkish conflict over the island of Cyprus are sovereignty, security, accession to the European Union, and territories, and that one of the most important factors affecting the context of bargaining …
Misusing Books: Material Texts And Lived Religion In The Roman Mediterranean, Jeremiah Coogan
Misusing Books: Material Texts And Lived Religion In The Roman Mediterranean, Jeremiah Coogan
Jesuit School of Theology
Books are more than vehicles for textual content. They are objects of economic value and social significance, embedded in complex networks of production and use. Recent historical scholarship on lived religion in the Roman Mediterranean has expanded beyond traditional conversations about theological concepts and scriptural interpretations, but this critical turn sometimes neglects material texts as sacred and powerful objects. Addressing this lacuna in light of Roman book culture, the present article re-reads several ancient reports about the misuse of textual objects. Accounts of the burned books of Numa Pompilius, of the powerful codex of Elchasai, and of the writings destroyed …

#Sbmarch: Museum Archaeology In The 2010, Alexandra G. Martin
Northeast Historical Archaeology
The Strawbery Banke Museum archaeology department moved in with the collections department after the construction of a new Collections Center building in 2007. The department has made new use of tools, such as an online artifact database; electromagnetometry, which helped locate a turn of the 20th-century mikveh excavated in 2014; and GIS, which offers a new approach to site-wide analysis of the many excavations across the campus. Recent archaeological efforts have concentrated on work related to the museum’s Heritage House Program, intended to rehabilitate buildings for interpretive and rental spaces. Ongoing work at historical house sites has meant that the …

Kurdish Filmmaking In Turkey: History And Narratives, Omar Sadik
Dissertations and Theses
This research investigates the history and politics of cultural production by examining Kurdish filmmaking in Turkey. Sadik provide an analysis of contemporary films and filmmakers to explore how Kurdish cinema in Turkey is situated in broader, global political-economic structures. By examining this important case through the lens of history and memory, Sadik clarify how production and aesthetics in Kurdish cinema point to important systemic processes. Sadik uses three main research strategies in this study: a historical survey of Kurds in Turkey, an analysis of ten semi-structured interviews with contemporary Kurdish directors and an analysis of films directed by Kurdish filmmakers …
Second Language Acquiescence Of Multilingual Students In Tanzania, Ann E. Roemer
Second Language Acquiescence Of Multilingual Students In Tanzania, Ann E. Roemer
World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications
This research, conducted at a major university in Tanzania, investigated the personal experiences of multilingual students vis-à-vis the government's language policy requiring Swahili as the language of instruction (LoI) at the primary level and English at the secondary level. The participants, who spoke 25 different languages as their L1, were placed into 49 different language groups and asked to write what they remembered about the language policy where they attended school. The data show that Gramsci's cultural hegemony is occurring in Tanzania. The 'common sense' is that people truly believe English is symbolic of prestige and power–even though few people …

BACKGROUND: Patients with cirrhosis and subcentimeter lesions on liver ultrasound are recommended to undergo short-interval follow-up ultrasound because of the presumed low risk of primary liver cancer (PLC).
AIMS: The aim of this study is to characterize recall patterns and risk of PLC in patients with subcentimeter liver lesions on ultrasound.
METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study among patients with cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis B infection who had subcentimeter ultrasound lesions between January 2017 and December 2019. We excluded patients with a history of PLC or concomitant lesions ≥1 cm in diameter. We used Kaplan Meier and multivariable …

A Turn To The African Girl, Marla Jaksch, Cymone Fourshey, Relebohile Moletsane
Faculty Journal Articles
Over the last century, girls in Africa, long ignored as sources of knowledge, have, nevertheless, engaged vocally and publicly in activism and artistic endeavors to express their visions and aspirations for a future society inclusive of their needs. Only recently have scholars begun to examine the complicated nature of girlhood in relation to capacity, competence, and knowledge layered with vulnerability and inexperience. In the last decade, the flourishing of girls’ inventive acts of agency and their use of their own incisive voices have given impetus to the growing scholarship on girls’ vibrant historical and current political, economic, creative, and cultural …
The Legacy Of Trayvon Martin—Neighborhood Watches, Vigilantes, Race, And Our Law Of Self-Defense, Mark S. Brodin
The Legacy Of Trayvon Martin—Neighborhood Watches, Vigilantes, Race, And Our Law Of Self-Defense, Mark S. Brodin
Marquette Law Review
Reflecting back a decade later, what is the enduring significance of the Trayvon Martin case—a Black teenager whose life is violently cut short, and a legal system that accepted his death without consequence? The poet Elizabeth Alexander speaks of “The Trayvon Generation” of Black youth who have grown up in the haunting shadow of his killing, and the anguished parents who cannot protect their children from such a fate. America’s first Black president spoke for them: “When I think about this boy, I think about my own kids. If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon,” Barack Obama told …

“Fundamental Fairness”: Finding A Civil Right To Counsel In International Human Rights Law, Meredith Elliott Hollman
“Fundamental Fairness”: Finding A Civil Right To Counsel In International Human Rights Law, Meredith Elliott Hollman
University of Richmond Law Review
Every other Western democracy now recognizes a right to counsel in at least some kinds of civil cases, typically those involving basic human rights. The World Justice Project’s 2021 Rule of Law Index ranked the United States 126th of 139 countries for “People Can Access and Afford Civil Justice.” Within its regional and income categories, the United States was dead last. The United Nations and other international treaty bodies have urged the United States to improve access to justice by providing civil legal aid. How did we fall behind, and what can we learn from the rest of the world? …

Ichthyofauna Of The Los Angeles River, Sabrina L. Drill, Jason Post, Rosi Dagit, Andres Aguilar
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
The Los Angeles River is a highly modified urban system. Upper tributaries of the watershed are located in Angeles National Forest and are in a relatively natural state, but below the forest boundary the tributaries and the mainstem consist of a series of completely channelized sections with a concrete bottom that includes a low-flow channel and vertical walls, sections where there are graded berms and a substrate that was either not stabilized with a concrete substrate, or where enough sediment has accumulated to provide a “soft-bottom” with vegetation, boulders, and variation in flow, and off-channel impoundments. Here we provide the …

Journal of Graduate Education Research
Although cancer clinical pathways (CPs) are standardized care plans for the treatment of specific cancers, they are not commonly used in Nigerian hospitals. Many Nigerian clinicians do not have the requisite skill for developing and implementing the use of CPs. Critical reflections provide an important perspective in the philosophy, design, implementation, and outcome of interventions. This paper critically reflects on the design and implementation of a multidisciplinary, blended learning (i.e. online and in-person) course which sought to improve the competence of local doctors, nurses, and allied students in developing clinical pathways. Reflective feedback was obtained from a mix of project …

Since its initial release in 2011, the Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) has evolved and expanded in scope. It started as a single algorithm for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) diagnosis with CT or MRI with extracellular contrast agents and has grown into a multialgorithm network covering all major liver imaging modalities and contexts of use. Furthermore, it has developed its own lexicon, report templates, and supplementary materials. This article highlights the major achievements of LI-RADS in the past 11 years, including adoption in clinical care and research across the globe, and complete unification of HCC diagnostic systems in the …

Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
Historical writing is considered an important part in historical studies. In fact, historical writing deals with how historical narratives are approached and exposes historians’ tendencies. The crusades and the conflicts between the Crusaders and Muslims are important historical periods that are still worth investigating further because of distortions and misrepresentations definging these periods. The study of Tarikh Alzaman and its methodology by Gregory Bar Hebraeus (known as Ibn Al-Malati or Ibn Al-ʿIbrī, 1226-1286 AD/ 623-685 H) is one of the most important studies. The problem of this study lies in attempting to understand the aspects of that period from the …

A Study Of Colonial Inscriptions In Stovia Salemba: The Marker Of Medical Education Development In Dutch East Indies, Zulfa Nurdina Fitri
International Review of Humanities Studies
STOVIA serves as a starting point of medical education in Indonesia and is interesting for historical study, especially after the discovery of inscriptions. This inscription consists of different letters and languages and, despite its limited information, clearly plays a pivotal role as a means of communication in its era. Inscriptions are considered the most reliable data source as they are made in their era and need to be studied, transliterated, and translated. This paper reviews two inscriptions found in STOVIA Salemba: the groundbreaking and the building inauguration and appreciation for one of the directors of STOVIA, dr. J. Noordhoek Hegt. …

Naval Considerations In The Russo-Ukrainian War, Seth Cropsey
Naval Considerations In The Russo-Ukrainian War, Seth Cropsey
Naval War College Review
Russia’s grand military strategy has a distinct maritime bent, the Ukrainian south coast is Russia’s most tangible strategic prize, and naval forces are crucial to holding it. Since the war’s beginning, Ukraine’s carefully planned strategy has applied stress to key elements of Russia’s maritime strategy, and Ukraine’s theory of victory is shaped by maritime considerations as thoroughly as Russia’s.

Ruben Fm And Its Involvement In Socio-Economic Challenges Of Mukuru Kwa Ruben Slums Of Nairobi, Henix Obuchunju
Master of Arts in Digital Journalism
vii ABSTRACT Slums are a reflection of underdeveloped and marginalisation. It is so yet the traditional watchdog genre of journalism and the commercial press are both as old as the slums themselves. Past studies show that community radios are struggling with feedback. As such they are yet to assess their value to the world. This study sought to assess the impact of the Mukuru kwa Ruben-based Ruben FM in addressing the socio- economic needs of its listeners; and whether it is advancing the tenets of Solutions Journalism practice. That is; coverage of solutions rather than the problems. The study relied …
Coloniality, Western Science, And Critical Ethnic Studies In Stem Education, Latoya M. Strong
Coloniality, Western Science, And Critical Ethnic Studies In Stem Education, Latoya M. Strong
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this dissertation, I use a critical transdisciplinary approach to examine how the coloniality of Western Science impacts science education teaching, learning, and research. Weaving together Black geographies, settler colonialism, and decolonial theory, I illustrate how the historical, symbiotic relationship between colonization and Western Science created a culture that continues to shape modern science practices and science education. The coloniality of Western Science was codified into science education, resulting in three approaches to teaching, learning and research—the assimilationist model, the capitalist model, and the imperialist model. Moving from theory to research, I collaborated with STEM educators over six weeks to …
A Race-Police Regime: Nypd Technology And Urban Governance In New York City, Elliott Liu
A Race-Police Regime: Nypd Technology And Urban Governance In New York City, Elliott Liu
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation draws on three years of ethnographic and archival research to explore the relationship between technology, policing and race at the NYPD. In focusing on the ways problems are constructed and police power enacted, I explore the more-than-human entanglements in the production of race and the governance of cities under racial capitalism. My overarching claim is that urban governance works through contentious techno-political arrangements I call race-police regimes, which sanction and elicit race by enacting forms of exclusion and belonging. Racial capitalism in New York City, I argue, is governed through a technocratic mode of policing which leverages …
