A Delicate Balance: Pennsylvania College In The Pennsylvania Borderlands, 1832-1860, Vivek K. Rallabandi
A Delicate Balance: Pennsylvania College In The Pennsylvania Borderlands, 1832-1860, Vivek K. Rallabandi
Student Publications
This paper discusses Pennsylvania College (now Gettysburg College) and its presence in the Pennsylvania borderlands region during the antebellum period, 1832-1860. The paper argues that Pennsylvania College's location and the "borderlands" identity of many of its students and faculty were integral to how discourse and actions surrounding slavery and abolition manifested themselves at the institution. The paper indicates that Pennsylvania College's antebellum history can serve as a microcosm of broader trends in American borderlands communities during this period. Crucially, this paper is shaped by primary source research conducting using minutes of Pennsylvania College's debating societies, the Philomathean and Phrenakosmian societies, …
Contemporary Vocal Pedagogy In The Choral Ensemble Rehearsal: A Guide For Secondary Educators, Luke Lee Browder
Contemporary Vocal Pedagogy In The Choral Ensemble Rehearsal: A Guide For Secondary Educators, Luke Lee Browder
Theses and Dissertations
The field of contemporary commercial vocal pedagogy is relatively new, with serious academic study primarily taking place over the last twenty-five years. In that time, however, a growing body of research has shown that the function of the vocal mechanism operates in essentially the same manner across classical and contemporary commercial music (CCM) genres, but the application of vocal function is what differentiates classical and CCM singing. Since secondary music educators often represent the only vocal training their students will ever receive, it is helpful for them to know the differences in vocal techniques and how to effectively train singers …
Bayesian Approach For Design And Analysis Of Medical Device Trials In The Era Of Modern Clinical Studies, Han Cao, Chen Yao, Ying Yuan
Bayesian Approach For Design And Analysis Of Medical Device Trials In The Era Of Modern Clinical Studies, Han Cao, Chen Yao, Ying Yuan
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Medical device technology develops rapidly, and the life cycle of a medical device is much shorter than drugs. It is necessary to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a medical device in a timely manner to keep up with technology flux. Bayesian methods provides an efficient approach to addressing this challenge. In this article, we review the characteristics of the Bayesian approach and some Bayesian designs that were commonly used in medical device regulatory setting, including Bayesian adaptive design, Bayesian diagnostic design, Bayesian multiregional design, and Bayesian label expansion study. We illustrate these designs with medical devices approved by the …

Basic: A Bayesian Adaptive Synthetic-Control Design For Phase Ii Clinical Trials, Liyun Jiang, Peter F Thall, Fangrong Yan, Scott Kopetz, Ying Yuan
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Background: Randomized controlled trials are considered the gold standard for evaluating experimental treatments but often require large sample sizes. Single-arm trials require smaller sample sizes but are subject to bias when using historical control data for comparative inferences. This article presents a Bayesian adaptive synthetic-control design that exploits historical control data to create a hybrid of a single-arm trial and a randomized controlled trial.
Methods: The Bayesian adaptive synthetic control design has two stages. In stage 1, a prespecified number of patients are enrolled in a single arm given the experimental treatment. Based on the stage 1 data, applying propensity …
The Utility Of Bayesian Predictive Models To Forecast Arboviruses In The United States Of America And Territories, Maggie Suzanne Jennave Mccarter
The Utility Of Bayesian Predictive Models To Forecast Arboviruses In The United States Of America And Territories, Maggie Suzanne Jennave Mccarter
Theses and Dissertations
Statistical models have been utilized to understand and forecast infectious diseases across the globe. However, these models have historically been difficult to access and interpret for non-specialist audiences. This dissertation focuses on one computationally efficient model fitting method, the integrated nested LaPlace approximation approach, to forecast three arboviruses in hopes of encouraging accessibility to statistical modelling. Such accessibility could provide areas who simultaneously are most susceptible to infection, and have the least resources, an invaluable tool for informing policy and prevention decisions. The resulting models included biological, land cover, and environmental factors and produced accurate forecasts of neuroinvasive West Nile …

A Phenomenological Study Examining Job Embeddedness Of Direct Support Professionals In Community-Based Services Programs: Why Do They Stay?, Athena M. Thomas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) live in the community in apartments, group home settings, and host home environments. They need support in all aspects of adaptive living skills to live independently. Direct support professionals (DSPs) provide support in areas of grooming, oral hygiene, toileting, laundry, housekeeping, meal planning, meal preparation, medication administration, mobility, recreation, shopping, and grocery shopping. This qualitative phenomenological study examined why DSPs remain in the position despite experiencing low wages, inadequate benefits, lack of adequate training, and lack of opportunities for upward mobility. Using the theoretical framework of job embeddedness, this research was conducted to …
The Position Of Gcc States On Comparative Advertising And Trademark Infringement., Hanan Al-Mawla
The Position Of Gcc States On Comparative Advertising And Trademark Infringement., Hanan Al-Mawla
Sultan Qaboos University Legal Studies Journal
Comparative advertising is one of the important topics discussed in various studies. From a legal perspective, the topic is of particular importance concerning trademarks. As a result, the lawfulness of comparative advertising has been excessively examined in the West. On the other hand, one can rarely find studies concerning the legality of comparative advertising in Arab states and in the States of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). As Western advertising techniques and methods are gaining a more substantial presence in Eastern culture, including the concept of comparative advertising, the limited presence of comparative advertising in this region is not expected …

Ethnic Newspaper Industry In Pakistan And Impacts Of Corporate Ownership, Shafiq Ahmad Kamboh, Muhammad Ittefaq, Awais Hamed
School of Communication Studies - Faculty Scholarship
During the Indian independence movement, the Urdu-language ethnic newspapers played a significant role in instigating resistance against colonial authorities within local communities. However, later on, Urdu journalism underwent a transformation, shifting from the ‘advocate-journalist’ model to one dominated by corporate ownership in Pakistan. These commercial agents have faced criticism for using journalism as a shield for their other businesses, yet their presence has profoundly impacted current newspaper practices in various ways. Our case study of the Daily Express reveals that this newspaper, by implementing innovative journalism, technological advancements and efficient management practices, has influenced both preceding and subsequent Urdu dailies, …
Resistance To Dna Interstrand Crosslinks In Escherichia Coli Arises Through Prevention Rather Than Repair, Travis Kim Worley
Resistance To Dna Interstrand Crosslinks In Escherichia Coli Arises Through Prevention Rather Than Repair, Travis Kim Worley
Dissertations and Theses
DNA interstrand crosslinks are particularly lethal lesions that form in DNA when certain molecules intercalate between complementary strands of DNA and form covalent bonds with both strands. Once formed, these lesions present an absolute block to replication and transcription, ultimately resulting in cell death. Because of this lethality, chemicals that form DNA interstrand crosslinks are found in nature as defensive chemicals produced by plants and microbes. Moreover, crosslinking agents have proven effective the treatment of dysplastic conditions and are often first line chemotherapeutics.
However, cancer cells can become resistant to DNA interstrand crosslinks. Unlike other DNA lesions, the double-stranded nature …
Conceptual Development: How Do Early Educators And Teachers Support Children's Early Thinking In Stem?, Marilyn Fleer
Conceptual Development: How Do Early Educators And Teachers Support Children's Early Thinking In Stem?, Marilyn Fleer
2021-2030 ACER Research Conferences
As national and state-based reforms in early education roll-out across Australia, concern for building a well-qualified workforce to meet growing demand has intensified. In parallel with the reforms, teachers and educators are reminded by the recently released 2022 Early Years Learning Framework to design programs that support intentionality in play-based learning. However, the literature shows that despite the concept of intentional teaching being around since 2009, difficulties with how to do this remains. This presentation takes up this challenge, by 1) sharing the collective findings of 6 Australian Research Council-funded research projects into play and learning in STEM; and 2) …
Repressive-Responsive Parameters Of Autocracies In Asia: Vietnam And China Compared, Nhu Truong
Repressive-Responsive Parameters Of Autocracies In Asia: Vietnam And China Compared, Nhu Truong
Rosenberg Institute Scholars
Moving beyond crude dichotomies of regime types, this article examines how state strategies of repression and responsiveness vary across autocracies in Asia. Specifically, Vietnam and China show significant variance on the reactive-institutionalized spectrum when it comes to land expropriation. Whereas Vietnam has systematically strengthened mechanisms against arbitrary land seizures, China has reactively opted for sketchy and ad-hoc reforms to curtail land conflicts. This article discloses the repressive-responsive parameters of autocracies in Asia through an original framework that allows for sharper analytical differentiation of how autocracies differ.
The Archival Impulse: English Family Record Keeping And Archives, Ca. 1450–1700, Maura Kenny
The Archival Impulse: English Family Record Keeping And Archives, Ca. 1450–1700, Maura Kenny
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
England in the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries witnessed a proliferation of documents arising from a growth in literacy and an expansion of state administrative offices. Scholarship on the archival history of this period has grown recently but it has focused mainly on institutional and state archives. Very little has been written about family or personal archives and the uses made of them. Based on modern archival theory and extensive archival research, this dissertation seeks to fill this gap by addressing the creation of family records and archives as a whole, exploring early modern English families as a “community of records.” …
Birthing, Nursing, And Grieving: An Anthropological Archaeology Of Healing Shrines In North Lebanon, Sarah Mady
Birthing, Nursing, And Grieving: An Anthropological Archaeology Of Healing Shrines In North Lebanon, Sarah Mady
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This archaeological study of healing shrines in North Lebanon begins with the story of why scholars have neglected these shrines. It is not essential to identify a gap in the scholarship without understanding why this gap existed in the first place. Healing shrines were often associated with popular religion and women’s superstitions, and to understand their position in the historical landscape of North Lebanon, I begin by laying out the history of archeology in Lebanon. It is imperative for the reader of this study to understand how the discipline of archaeology was founded and practiced and its implications on the …
Unshackling Cities, Felipe Ford Cole
Unshackling Cities, Felipe Ford Cole
University of Chicago Law Review
Scholars have long demonstrated that cities are constrained by states and the federal government in the exercise of their power. While important, the emphasis on these “vertical” constraints on cities does not account for the “horizontal” constraints on city power from private actors. This Article suggests that the emphasis on vertical constraints on city power is due to a misunderstanding of the history of local government law that describes its sole function as the vertical distribution of power between cities and different levels of government. I revise the history of Dillon’s Rule, the doctrinal cornerstone of local government law’s vertical …

“An Alarming State Of Evil Among Our Juveniles” A Case Study Of Public Education In Manchester, New Hampshire From 1845-1915, Amy Cummings Sherr
Master's Theses and Capstones
This thesis investigates the effectiveness of compulsory public education laws in Manchester, New Hampshire from 1845-1915, drawing on detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis of school attendance records, legislative proceedings, and media coverage. The thesis identifies shifting objectives in the campaigns for compulsory education laws and child labor laws in New Hampshire over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries which help to explain lackluster enforcement. Reformers re-defined the perceived problems over time which led to new legislation and changing priorities in enforcement. Initially, reformers focused on “idle children” causing trouble and disrupting society. Then with mass immigration to the …

Improvisation, Routine Dynamics, And Temporal Regularity, Kenneth T. Goh, Claus Rerup
Improvisation, Routine Dynamics, And Temporal Regularity, Kenneth T. Goh, Claus Rerup
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Improvisation is sensitive to time, and in this chapter, we explore how temporal regularity influences the process of improvisation within the context of organizational routines. Specifically, we develop a time-based perspective to highlight that the temporal regularity of a routine plays a fundamental role in maintaining a balance between stability and flexibility (improvisation). We illustrate the idea that temporal regularity allows for improvisation with an example of the Scrum routine within the context of videogame development. Our contribution is twofold. First, we advance new insights on how the temporal pattern of a routine is a minimal structure that complements action …
Publishing The Pan-Jewish: The First Hebrew Newspaper And Its Modernities, Philip E. Keisman
Publishing The Pan-Jewish: The First Hebrew Newspaper And Its Modernities, Philip E. Keisman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Publishing the Pan-Jewish emerges from a question about sites of synthesis between claims of sacred continuity and novel forms of communication. It centers on the first ten years of Hamagid (1856-1866), acknowledged within the historiography as history’s first Hebrew-language newspaper. Eliezer Lipman Silberman, an Orthodox butcher founded Hamagid in East Prussia as a bulwark of his vision of traditional Judaism. The first chapter of this dissertation examines the formal elements of the newspaper as a medium, demonstrating the myriad ways in which it presented novel experiences for its reading public. Chapter two narrates an untold history of the newspaper’s early …
From Both Sides Now: Reflections On Recent Methodological Trends In The Study Of Islam, Aaron W. Hughes Prof
From Both Sides Now: Reflections On Recent Methodological Trends In The Study Of Islam, Aaron W. Hughes Prof
Abdou Filali-Ansary Occasional Paper Series
This is a set of critical reflections on the place and role of ‘theory and method’ within the context of the study of Islam, especially (but not solely) as carried out in the field of religious studies, over the course of roughly the last twenty years. The goal here is not to criticise, but instead to come at this issue of ‘theory and method’ in the study of Islam from a more mature perspective. At present in the field there is a diverse set of attempts to imagine ‘Islam’, not as a theological category that must be defended, but as …

The Concept Of Tritangtu At Tarawangsa Music Performance In Pasir Biru Village, Rancakalong, Sumedang, Sri Rahayu Ferawati, Aris Setiawan
Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya
This study aims to reveal the aesthetics of the concept of Tritangtu (the trinity) in the Tarawangsa music performance in Kampung Pasir Biru, Rancakalong, Sumedang. Tarawangsa is a ritual ceremony related to religious magic to honor Keursa Nyai (goddess of fertility). The music in this ritual is not just an accompaniment or ritual compliment but even deeper shows a strong connection with the concept of Tritangtu, namely the world of heaven, the human world, and the underworld. This study uses the ethnographic method, by performing an in-depth recording of the event. The recording is to find out in more detail …
“Hopelessly Crippled”: The Construction Of Disability In Borges’S “Funes, His Memory”, Madilyn Abbe
“Hopelessly Crippled”: The Construction Of Disability In Borges’S “Funes, His Memory”, Madilyn Abbe
Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism
In Jorge Luis Borges’s “Funes, His Memory,” the narrator presents Ireneo Funes as an intriguing example of both physical and cognitive atypicality. Although the narrator is quick to identify Funes’s deficiencies, he unashamedly acknowledges his own cognitive weaknesses as well. Using a literary disability studies lens, this article examines the construction of disability within the text, arguing that the narrator imposes disability onto Funes to mask the possibility that he be categorized as disabled. The narrator sets up an ableist binary to undermine Funes physically, yet this binary falls apart when applied to cognitive ability. In order to address this …
The Persistent Limits Of Fraud Prevention In Historical Perspective, Emily Kadens
The Persistent Limits Of Fraud Prevention In Historical Perspective, Emily Kadens
Northwestern University Law Review
Fraud has been ubiquitous throughout history, and so have the methods of fraud prevention. History demonstrates that no anti-fraud measures have fully succeeded in eliminating deceptive market behavior. Instead, this Essay uses evidence from premodern England to argue that societies and individual contracting parties balance tolerating a certain amount of fraud against the costs of fraud prevention.

Urban Resistance To Occupation: An Underestimated Element Of Land Warfare, Kevin D. Stringer, Jelle J. H. Hooiveld
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
With the world trending toward urbanization, and Russia and China acting aggressively toward Ukraine and Taiwan, respectively, the conduct of irregular warfare in built-up environments—specifically, urban resistance to occupation—merits greater study. The authors’ Dutch-language and primary source research on the Netherlands’ World War II urban resistance to German occupation makes this article unique. It provides deeper insights into the occupation experiences of a highly urbanized, densely populated country in which clandestine underground and auxiliary elements played paramount roles in resistance efforts for most of the occupation period. It also illustrates the feasibility of overt, guerrilla-based activity in urban environments during …
