The Anchor, Volume 51.08: January 12, 1938, Hope College

The Anchor: 1938

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Science And Society (Academy Address), Charles E. Friley Jan 1938

Science And Society (Academy Address), Charles E. Friley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two quotations will serve as texts for this brief discourse on Science and Society: The late Dr. Edwin E. Slosson - "In our civilization the mechanical forces have forged ahead of the moral and intellectual forces. Modern man is like the Arab fisherman who liberated from the bottle genii he did not know how to control." Stuart Chase - "This is the last great adventure; the boldest, most exhilarating, most dangerous adventure that ever challenged the intelligence and spirit of mankind. From our brains have sprung a million wild horses, now running loose and almost certain sooner or later to …

Preparation Of Thianthrene, Eugene Alton Talley Jan 1938

Preparation Of Thianthrene, Eugene Alton Talley

Master's Theses

This work was begun in an attempt to study further the preparation of thianthrene from 2-dichlorobenzene and alkali sulfides. g_-Dichlorobenzene is a liquid by-product in the preparation of its solid isomer, E-dichlorobenzene, which is used extensively for controlling moths and peach tree borers. The study of the preparation of thianthrene from the liquid isomer was undertaken because the preparation might develop into a possible use for the large quantities available.

Thianthrene might be made from 2-dibromo- and 2-diiodo-benzene but these are not as cheap or as easily obtained as the dichloro derivative and were not used in this study various …

The Problem Of Isaiah In The Book Of Mormon, H. Grant Vest

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of Isaiah in the Book of Mormon is specifically a study in Historical Criticism. In nature it is a textual problem especially adapted to the methods of textual science. This includes, of course, both branches of that science, namely, lower criticism and higher criticism.

Probable Origins Of The Modern Pueblos, Nan Ashton Glenn Jul 1937

Probable Origins Of The Modern Pueblos, Nan Ashton Glenn

Anthropology ETDs

The Pueblo group of the southwest has probably been given more study than any other culture group of North America. Both functional and historical studies have been made, and faint attempts set forth, to deduce the origin of the modern Pueblo culture, as a whole, from the prehistoric Pueblo culture studied by archaeologists. Theories regarding this origin have varied somewhat during the last ten years, but relatively little attempt has been made to check detailed archaeological or ethnological material of any of the Pueblo groups with data on other groups outside the area. It would seem that as far as …

Courts Rule - Making Power, Peter S. Boter

Michigan Law Review

A statute of the State of New Mexico delegated to the supreme court of the state the power to promulgate rules regulating pleading, practice, and procedure in judicial proceedings for the purpose of simplifying the same and for the promotion of the speedy determination of litigation upon the merits. The act further provides that all statutes relating to pleading and practice now in force shall have effect only as rules of court and remain in effect as such unless modified or suspended by rules promulgated pursuant to this Act. Held, that the rule-making power can constitutionally be delegated to …
