A Preliminary Study Of Lemanea In Western North America, C. Mervin Palmer Apr 1945

A Preliminary Study Of Lemanea In Western North America, C. Mervin Palmer

Butler University Botanical Studies

Lemanea from both Europe and America is being studied to determine whether the representatives from the two continents are distinct, and whether there are undescribed species to be recognized particularly for American forms. The two subgenera, Eulemanea and Sacheria, are round on both continents (4). Occasionally plants of both the subgenera have been collected growing close together in the same stream (5, 6), but there are no indications that hybridization takes place. Several hundred specimens of Lemanea have been studied by the writer and in no case have any plants been discovered which could be considered as intermediate between Eulemanea …

Additions To The Filamentous Myxophyceae Of Indiana, Kentucky And Ohio, William A. Daily Apr 1945

Additions To The Filamentous Myxophyceae Of Indiana, Kentucky And Ohio, William A. Daily

Butler University Botanical Studies

During the past several years, numerous specimens of the Myxophyceae from Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio have accumulated in the herbaria cited below. Some of these species presumably have not previously been reported for this region and are now placed on record.

It is known that many collections of algea, the bases for previous reports, have been lost or are inaccessible. It is the desire of the writer and of other students of the herbarium that all published works on the algae be based only upon permanently preserved specimens.

The First Texas Academy Of Science, S. W. Geiser Jan 1945

The First Texas Academy Of Science, S. W. Geiser

Field and Laboratory

Lack of an historical sense is the bane of many workers in the domain of Science…. The matter of the Texas Academy of Science is another illustration in point. This was organized in 1892 (as we at the present know it) at the University of Texas, and continued active for twenty years (until 1912), having in the meantime published twelve volumes of Transactions. It then ceased its activities and became extinct (like the Texas State Horticultural Society, which existed from 1875 to 1922.) In 1929, the present Texas State Academy of Science was reorganized by five men, and has continued …

Mr. Justice William Johnson, Creative Dissenter, A. J. Levin Dec 1944

Mr. Justice William Johnson, Creative Dissenter, A. J. Levin

Michigan Law Review

Until the advent of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, the masterful and magnetic figure of Chief Justice John Marshall well-nigh overshadowed the whole field of constitutional jurisprudence. That Marshall made inestimable additions to our ideas of cooperative living at the very beginning of our democracy, and that his repute was well deserved, cannot be gainsaid. But one has good cause to wonder why the name of so distinguished a colleague as William Johnson, who sat on the same bench with Marshal for almost thirty years during that formative period, should have been almost completely obscured all these years. Rare, indeed, is …

Antiochus Epiphanes., Brougher Petty Maddox Oct 1944

Antiochus Epiphanes., Brougher Petty Maddox

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While the writer was an undergraduate he spent two Summers in the Panamint mountains above Death Valley, California. Hiking with one of the few old-timers remaining in that region he noticed that "the old desert rat" would stoop occasionally to pick up certain rocks which he would examine closely. Some went into a pouch he carried. They were later crushed and "panned." If they made a "showing" in the gold-pan, the prospector would retrace his steps and arduously search for the parent vein. In similar fashion the writer has ventured upon interesting features in the life and character of the …

Survival Of Hemlock Seedlings In A Relict Colony Under Forest Conditions, Ray C. Friesner, J. E. Potzger

Butler University Botanical Studies

It would thus appear that in areas where hemlock is a component of the climax, and not merely a relict, reproduction is dependent primarily upon a combination of three factors, viz. a good seed year followed by a good germinating year and these in turn followed by several years of favorable moisture conditions.

Pollen Frequency Of Abies And Picea In Peat: A Correction On Some Published Records From Indiana Bogs And Lakes, J. E. Potzger

Butler University Botanical Studies

An error was introduced in a number of reports on pollen profiles from Indiana bogs and lakes because Picea and Abies were separated on basis of size as presented in a key by Sears, which included only Picea mariana but not Picea glauca.

Religious Education And The Public Schools, John Zornan

Master's Theses

The purpose or this monograph is to survey and evaluate the relationship between religious education and the public schools from the early colonial times to the present. Special attention rill be paid to the widespread agitation that formal religious courses be introduced into the public school curriculum. This necessitates a thorough investigation of the Weekday Church School which is to be the chief' agency of' such courses. The last chapters will be devoted to comments and conclusions based on the fact• as presented.

Celtic Chrisitinaity A Survey Of Its History And Influence, Gerald Schaus May 1944

Celtic Chrisitinaity A Survey Of Its History And Influence, Gerald Schaus

Bachelor of Divinity

In the light of thorough research in this field by outstanding historians, it would be a rather serious admission of a lack of completeness of historical study to hold with the old view, namely, that nothing factual is known about Celtic Christianity! Now this paper makes no, pretensions of being a comp1ete coverage of the history of Celtic Christianity, for that is impossible to do in a work of this length. The purpose, rather, is to present an overall picture of the labors of the Celtic Christians and to compare the Celtic Church with the Church of Rome.
