Pioneering Adventures Of Johan Edvard Lilljeholm In America, 1846-1850, Arthur Wald

Augustana Historical Society Publications

Excerpt from Foreword:

In the impressive collection of newspapers, letters and documents in the Augustana College Archives pertaining to Swedish pioneer history is found a considerable number of immigrant stories and biographies, which aside from their importance to scholars as research sources, have extraordinary human interest. In years past, the Bulletin of the Augustana Swedish Institute has published a number of these pioneer stories, but it remained for a Swedish clergyman, Kyrkoherde Gosta Soderberg from L. P. Esbjorn's parish of Ostervala, while engaged in research in the Archives, to come upon and recognize the value of one such document previously …

College Life In Ante-Bellum Virginia, Diane Keith Light

Honors Theses

In comparison with contemporary collegiate experiences, college life in ante-bellum Virginia offers many contrasts. The college curriculum, teaching methods, student regulations, and behavior were manifestations of nineteenth century thought. These facets combined to form the existence of the institution and its inhabitants.

A Historical Study Of The Mormon Temple At Nauvoo, Illinois, Don F. Colvin Jan 1962

A Historical Study Of The Mormon Temple At Nauvoo, Illinois, Don F. Colvin

Theses and Dissertations

The Nauvoo Temple was a unique structure, one which symbolized "Mormonism" in the early period of its history. In its time, the temple stood as the chief structure of the city of Nauvoo. It rivaled all buildings in Illinois and the West during its brief history.

This study reviews the entire history of the temple, from when it was first contemplated until its fateful destruction, and beyond. It sheds light on the setting in which the great edifice was built. Consideration is given to the struggles and sacrifices on the part of workmen and church members who freely gave to …

An Historical Study Of The Koyle Relief Mine, 1894-1962, James R. Christianson

Theses and Dissertations

The Koyle Relief Mine, located near Spanish Fork in Central Utah, has had a profound effect upon the life and property of thousands of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Company officials claim that the number of stockholders, past and present, exceeds six thousand persons.

Despite the sixty-eight years of its totally unsuccessful operation, the mine continues to maintain a countless number of old believers and to attract a considerable array of new ones. Prompted by a type of religious fervor, these people continue to declare the mine divine and its founder, John H. Koyle, inspired. …

A Survey Of Speech Therapy Programs Of Selected School Districts Within A One Hundred Mile Radius Of Lodi, California, Edward O. Tempel

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Recognition of the need for special education for school children with speech handicaps was first made in Potsdam, Germany, in 1896. Twelve years later in 1908 the first public school class in speech correction in the United States was organized in New York City, Programs of speech and hearing re-education in the public schools of the United States have expanded from this single metropolitan system in 1908 to a nation-wide effort in little more than fifty years.

In the United States today more than two million school children require remedial services from competently trained speech clinicians. In California public schools …

The Condor's Quill : An Analytical And Historical Study Of The Style Of Herman Melville's Moby Dick, Eleanor Burgess Kramer Jan 1962

The Condor's Quill : An Analytical And Historical Study Of The Style Of Herman Melville's Moby Dick, Eleanor Burgess Kramer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In commencing the study of the style of Moby Dick, the student is confronted with several questions. Most important, perhaps, is the question of how much the style has contributed to the importance of the book, to the great adulation accorded it by many critics during the last quarter century.

Did Melville’s peculiar ways of expressing his ideas have some particularly timely appeal to the post-WWI Generation? It is a highly mannered style, unique as that of Tristram Shandy. Yet while Sterne’s book was greatly enjoyed by the author’s contemporaries, Moby-Dick aroused very little contemporary interest. Was the style of …

A History Of The Public Schools Of Stockton, California, Charles Dennis Bloch Jan 1962

A History Of The Public Schools Of Stockton, California, Charles Dennis Bloch

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study should, in a small way, add an important chapter in the total local historical record, and be of particular value to the Stockton Unified School District. It is to be hoped that the following study will give proper credit to the early achievements of the schools, and give a chronology of school progress. This paper also points to the shortcomings and failures of the local schools, since there are also a part of the record.

A Historical Study Of The Woman Suffrage Movement In California, 1910-1911, Audrey Mackey Johnson

Notes On Cultivated Junipers, Marion T. Hall Dec 1961

Notes On Cultivated Junipers, Marion T. Hall

Butler University Botanical Studies

The genus Juniperus is the third largest in the coniferales, and its many species are not only widespread but also extensively cultivated. Several factors make the classifying of horticultural junipers both difficult and confusing. First, the species are ill-defined since there are few good key characters and few qualitative characters. The numerous quantitative characters vary considerably. The characteristics of the reproductive organs, fruit characters, vary as much as those of the vegetative body. Secondly, natural hybridization at the species level is widespread and the recombinations are occasionally bizarre. Thirdly, horticultural selection is made by man without concomitant analysis of the …

The Genus Sphaerellopsis In Indiana, Rex N. Webster

Butler University Botanical Studies

A new alga was recorded for Marion County in the State of Indiana in May, 1960, when a sample of water from a small fish pond on the property of Professor William Cupp, near the Butler University campus, was found to contain a large number of individuals of Sphaerellopsis fluviatilis Pascher. No previous report of the occurrence of this genus in Indiana is listed in the flora records of the state.

Selected Materials On The Literature Of Bankruptcy, Roy Mersky Dec 1961

Selected Materials On The Literature Of Bankruptcy, Roy Mersky

Vanderbilt Law Review

Charles Warren, in his book Bankruptcy in United States History, opens the first chapter with a statement that would discourage most lawyers interested in developing a practice in bankruptcy: "The subject of bankruptcy is gloomy and depressing in that the law of bankruptcy is dry and discouraging." However, a federal bankruptcy law has been on the statute books continuously since 1898, and it is safe to assume that barring a nuclear war, legal problems dealing with bankruptcy will continue for along time in the future.

Eros And Agape In The Thought Of Giovanni Pico Della Mirandola, John Warwick Montgomery Dec 1961

Eros And Agape In The Thought Of Giovanni Pico Della Mirandola, John Warwick Montgomery

Concordia Theological Monthly

Anders Nygren's remarkable work, Agape and Eros, whose German edition appeared in Carl Stange's monographic series, "Studies of the Apologetics Seminar," and which opposes the interpretations both of Harnack and of Scholz, received from the outset high commendation as a classic theological production. In his review of the English translation of Part Two of Agape and Eros Sydney Cave wrote: 'Dr. Nygren's fresh and suggestive study puts many an old problem in a new light and in particular shows how false were some of Harnack's brilliant generalizations on the history of early Christian thought and piety…. It is some years …
