George Santayana: A Critical Anomaly, Carol Ann Erickson Feb 1966

George Santayana: A Critical Anomaly, Carol Ann Erickson

Student Work

The events of George Santayana*s life provide a valuable introduction to any study of his works. Though it cannot fceally be said that his life was filled with the sort of excitement or intrigue which makes for suspenseful biography, his life was one of steady productivity and ever increasing fame, first as poet, then as philosopher, essayist, critic, and novelist.

Martin Chemnitz' Views On Trent: The Genesis And The Genius Of The Examen Concilii Tridentini, Arthur Carl Piepkorn Jan 1966

Martin Chemnitz' Views On Trent: The Genesis And The Genius Of The Examen Concilii Tridentini, Arthur Carl Piepkorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

"In recent centuries one or the other of [the] pillars supporting the Tridentine system have appeared to tremble, but as a whole the system has always survived the various crises which had only brought about certain individual degenerations. Beginning with 1958-1959, through a whole concourse of historical and spiritual factors, and certainly under an impulse of the Holy Spirit, the [Roman] Catholic Church (and more generally the entire Christian world) abandoned the Tridentine system on all fundamental themes. The brief intervening time cannot distract us from the global dimensions and the definitive significance of this abandonment."

A Historical Study Of Silver Reef: Southern Utah Mining Town, Alfred Bleak Stucki Jan 1966

A Historical Study Of Silver Reef: Southern Utah Mining Town, Alfred Bleak Stucki

Theses and Dissertations

While a number of short articles and histories of Silver Reef have been written, they tend either to be anecdotal in character or to emphasize the merely sensational aspects of the mining camp. These writings have failed to investigate some of the most basic sources of information concerning this highly interesting mining epic in Southern Utah. Therefore, there remains a real need for a thoroughly researched and documented history of silver Reef - a need that this thesis tries to meet.

A Historical Study Of The Growth Of Psychiatric Facilities In The State Of Georgia From 1959-1965, Carla Bays

Honors Projects

Improved mental health in the United States has become one of the most vital problems facing the current generation. More and more hospitals have opened inpatient and outpatient units of psychiatry; literature has been published; public health has attempted to educate the laymen about mental health; and the National Institute of Mental Health has encouraged and supported each new mental health facility. After studying material published regarding the advancement made in many areas, the author began to wonder about the progress in her own community, her own state - Georgia - a part of the often termed underdeveloped South. What …

The Concept Of History In The Thought Of Rudolf Bultmann And Reinhold Niebuhr, Joseph H. Bragg Jr. Jan 1966

The Concept Of History In The Thought Of Rudolf Bultmann And Reinhold Niebuhr, Joseph H. Bragg Jr.

Graduate Thesis Collection

The question of the nature and meaning of history has become increasingly important in contemporary thought. In theological circles, it has become the central theme of discussion. Thereare a number of reasons why this is so. The events of the times in which we live have brought about a definite rejection of any knowledge-equals-progress idea of history as well as a call for interpretation of the profound social crises which we confront. The widespread influence of existentialism, with its emphasis on relativism and subjectivism, has brought into question not only the nature of history, in terms of present reality, but …

Editorial, Herbert T. Mayer Sep 1965

Editorial, Herbert T. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

This issue is the second in the Biblical Studies series, a series first suggested by the Commission on Church Literature and subsequently endorsed by the general leadership of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. This issue is a contribution toward a fuller understanding of the nature of the Word of God. All the articles contribute to this thematic study. One's appreciation of God's written Word can be so controlled by specific problems, like the Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch, that the full grandeur of this book can disappear behind a carefully built fence of minor concerns. The contributors to this …

The Hermeneutical Dilemma: Dualism In The Interpretation Of Holy Scripture, Martin H. Franzmann Sep 1965

The Hermeneutical Dilemma: Dualism In The Interpretation Of Holy Scripture, Martin H. Franzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod ought to have a special interest in hermeneutical questions. It is surely a great gift of God to our church that the authority of Scripture is for us still an unquestioned authority, that in all theological discussion in our midst it can be assumed that all participants are the '"humble readers" of whom Luther speaks, that each man '"trembles at the speech of God and continually cries, Teach me! Teach me!'" Of all church bodies we perhaps are, by the grace of God, the least corroded by the '"acids of modernity," the most "naive" in our …

The History And Development Of The Football Helmet, Paul E. Quam Aug 1965

The History And Development Of The Football Helmet, Paul E. Quam

Theses and Dissertations

In tracing the history and development of the football helmet in its origin and evolution, the study related the changes in design of football headgear, humorous photographic plates included throughout the chronicled data depict graphically the changes which occurred. These photographs provide a proper perspective for an understanding of the present day football helmet.

An account of the explanation proffered by designers of helmets, with reference to selection of style, has been included.

Analyzing the particular details in design of football headgear, the study alludes to the different attitudes held by both coaches and players toward the game itself.

Finally, …

The Originality Of Fredrick Jackson Turner As An Historian And Teacher, Norman Gale Lamprey Aug 1965

The Originality Of Fredrick Jackson Turner As An Historian And Teacher, Norman Gale Lamprey

Graduate Student Research Papers

The originality of Frederick Jackson Turner can be recognized against a background consisting of evidence of his contributions to the two fields, history and teaching. The stage will be set by a short biographical treatment of Turner. This avenue of approach will lead to an elaboration of Turner's major historical interpretation. This concept will be described and two subordinate facets of his thesis will be examined briefly. The teaching aspects of Turner's career will be illuminated by analyzing the inseparable historian-teacher relationship and, in addition, the quality and lasting effects of his influence will be treated. It is not the …
