Mr. Justice Powell And The Emerging Nixon Majority, A.E. Dick Howard Jan 1972

Mr. Justice Powell And The Emerging Nixon Majority, A.E. Dick Howard

Michigan Law Review

In recent years, we have come to expect the debate over Supreme Court nominations to reflect ideological passions in the Government and the country at large; the Fortas, Haynsworth, and Carswell cases remain fresh in memory. In the hearings on the nominations of Lewis F. Powell, Jr., and William H. Rehnquist to the Court, Senate Democratic liberals made clear their intention to probe not only the nominees' integrity and legal qualifications, but also their judicial philosophies. It was ironic, therefore, to watch as liberal members of the Judiciary Committee, through their questions and comments at the confirmation hearings, made Powell, …

Bret Harte, Patrick Morrow Jan 1972

Bret Harte, Patrick Morrow

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

Bret Harte is well known as the first internationally famous writer of short stories about the West. “The Luck of Roaring Camp,” “The Outcasts of Poker Flat," and “Tennessee’s Partner,” all published in the late 1860's, earned Harte the recognition of the nation's popular audience and approval by Emerson, Lowell, Longfellow, Howells, and other leading literary men of the day. In 1870 Harte, then editor of the San Francisco-based Overland Monthly, published “Plain Language from Truthful James,” better known as “The Heathen Chinee.” Hawked on the street corners, endlessly reprinted, the poem created a national sensation. Soon afterwards, Harte …

FOCUS

Campus News
Change and potential change were the dominant features of spring at Colby. There was approval of limited coeducational housing by the board of trustees and a faculty vote on new graduation requirements ensuring academic vigor and maintaining curricular flexibility. The second Constitutional Convention April 7-9 recommended changes to the board which, if adopted, could lead to a more highly-developed sharing of responsibility among students, faculty, administrators and trustees.

A Finnish Riihi In Minnesota, Matti Kaups Jan 1972

A Finnish Riihi In Minnesota, Matti Kaups

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A Finnish riihi in Minnesota is described and analyzed from the perspectives of form and function. The riihi or the combination grain drying, threshing, and winnowing barn, is one of the several folk architectural forms that immigrants from rural Finland built and used in settling sections of Minnesota. Since most of the log structures erected by the Finns are in a state of decay or already have vanished, it seems pertinent to preserve examples of the transplanted folk heritage in writing, and hopefully, in material form as well.

Naval Construction And Repair At San Blas, Mexico, 1767-1797, Malcolm Hall Kenyon

History ETDs

This thesis is a technical-historical study of ship construction and repair performed at the Royal Shipyard of San Blas in the Spanish colony of New Spain in the years 1767-1797, covering the entire official life-span of the establishment. The writer establishes preliminary technical bases for the conversion of eighteenth-century Spanish volumes, weights, and linear measures into the modern English system and discusses in detail the techniques necessary for converting ship tonnages. A chronological framework is established for the history of the shipyard, taking into consideration principal geographical, climatological, and environmental influences. A study of the means of production is made, …
