He taught elementary school in Colorado pioneer mining communities during 1873 and 1878. The Anglo-Norman Nobility In The Reign Of Henry I, Charlotte A. Newman
The Anglo-Norman Nobility In The Reign Of Henry I, Charlotte A. Newman
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation is a prosopographical study of the Anglo-Norman nobility in the first half of the twelfth century. By the twelfth century, the status, wealth and power of this class had come to be based more on the inheritance of position than on an individual’s military or administrative function. In order to expand his administration and to guarantee a supply of loyal administrators, Henry I used his favor to reward lower nobles and “new men,” thus creating a new method of entrance to or of mobility within the noble class. The extent to which Henry I’s favor affected the nobles …

The Huge Delusion: A Study Of The Young Emperors And Roman Historians, Phillip Anthony Hesser
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
It cannot be said that the subject of Caesarian insanity has been neglected by the writers of the past century. It has attracted the attention of doctors, psychoanalysts, philologists, and legions of historians, novelists, scenarists, and the like. Though many of their treatments are helpful, I find a parochialism caused by a focus of one Caesar or a single discipline. Hereditary epilepsy, for example, may occur in the Julians, but it does not apply to the Severans. Nero may have been scopophilic, but he was not alone, if we are to admit the evidence of Petronius’ writings. Topoi may suggest …

The Concept Of Character Development In The Writings Of Ellen G. White, John M. Fowler
The Concept Of Character Development In The Writings Of Ellen G. White, John M. Fowler
Dissertations
Problem. Character development is a fundamental objective of the Seventh-day Adventist educational system. The purpose of this study was to define the concept of character development in the writings of Ellen G. White whose thought is foundational to the philosophy of the worldwide system of Seventh-day Adventist schools. The investigation focused on four subproblems: (1) the meaning and significance of character; (2) the nature of character development; (3) factors affecting character development; and (4) responsibility for character development.
Method. The problem was approached by (1) carefully perusing White's published writings and noting every statement related to the study; (2) inductively …

The Politics Of John Muir, Dorothy M. Freeman
The Politics Of John Muir, Dorothy M. Freeman
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
A man does not always see himself as others see him. John Muir is venerated by several generations of Americans as a man who left a legacy of State and National Parks, State and National Forests, outdoor beauty and untouched wilderness areas which would never have survived has it not been for this dedicated man.
He did not plan such a course. He did what he found necessary to be done, without thought of personal gain or public honor.
However, during his lifetime there were those who did not view him with such veneration. Countless ranchers, lumberman and politicians must …

Student Work
Life in the military for most, families is an interesting and enjoyable experience. It offers an opportunity to make many friends, meet interesting people, travel to new places, and live in foreign countries. For the family with a handicapped child these advantages can turn into disadvantages and be an additional area for concern. Frequent moves, long separations, and the strangeness of new communities can cause worry and apprehension. Not knowing what is available for their special child at the next duty station can lead to additional stress and lower the morale of the family.

Camden: A Frontier Town In Eighteenth Century South Carolina, Kenneth E. Lewis
Camden: A Frontier Town In Eighteenth Century South Carolina, Kenneth E. Lewis
Anthropological Studies
An examination of the site of the British colonial settlement of Camden, a center of social, economic, and political activity on the eighteenth century backcountry frontier of South Carolina, permitted the observation of large-scale intrasite patterning through the use of stratified unaligned random sampling of the subsurface remains there. Although disturbed by long-term agricultural activity, patterning in the distribution of archeological materials was discernible. An examination of this patterning reveals not only the spatial and temporal limits of the settlement, but also suggests that Camden shared significant functional similarities with frontier centers in general. In contrast to urban centers with …

A Study Of Re-Writing In The Poetry Of Arthur Hugh Clough, Patrick G. Scott

Dayton And The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, George Ruppell S.M.
University of Dayton Review
Even today some people wonder why Dayton, Ohio is called the home of aviation and the mention of McCook, Wright and Patterson fields seems like another mystery. Even the news media before 1910 missed the big story. In Dayton the two sons of Bishop Milton Wright, Wilbur and Orville, bicycle builders and repairmen, thought that they could fly with an engine, and at the same time there was Samuel P. Langley, the head of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., doing the same thing. The Dayton boys corresponded with everyone they thought would have some experience with flying. Octave Chanute …
