The Evolution Of Dixie College As A Public Institution Of Higher Education In Utah From 1871 To 1935, Edna Jensen Gregerson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study has attempted to determine the forces which influenced the development of Dixie College from its inception as a church oriented Academy in 1871 to its becoming a state supported institution under the Utah Public School System in 1935. Included are a series, of events, crises, people, and historical forces which became a part of a neighborhood, of societal groups, of community development and led to the emergence of the institution and its growth in a small isolated Latter-Day Saint community; Beginning with the organizing of the LDS Church in 1830, the educational endeavors of the Mormon people--dedicated to …

Law And Social Order In The United States, James W. Ely, Jr. Jan 1978

Law And Social Order In The United States, James W. Ely, Jr.

Vanderbilt Law Review

No student of American legal history can overlook the significant work of J. Willard Hurst, who has been described as "the foremost historian of American law."' A prolific author, Hurst has been concerned primarily with the relationship between law and the economic system. His most recent volume, Law and Social Order in the United States, is an important contribution to the rapidly growing literature in the legal history field. Based upon the Carl L.Becker Lectures that Hurst delivered at Cornell University in 1976, the book ranges broadly over America's nineteenth- and twentieth-century legal past, with emphasis upon law and social …

A History Of The Guam Public Library System 1947-1975, Mary Sue Caldwell Dec 1977

A History Of The Guam Public Library System 1947-1975, Mary Sue Caldwell

Dissertations

This historical study ascertained that, between the years of 1902 and 1941, there were libraries on Guam which served the local civilian population. Early library development on Guam (prior to 1947) did not seem to have followed the same pattern of development as libraries in the United States. This may have been due, in part, to the individuals responsible for the two library movements on Guam. The Guam Public Library System and its predecessors were established by individuals from the continental United States, where libraries had already undergone a developmental process. Thus, the library on Guam seems to have been …

Criminal Conspiracy In Canada, Terence Arnold Oct 1977

Criminal Conspiracy In Canada, Terence Arnold

Dalhousie Law Journal

Criminal Conspiracy in Canada "is primarily intended to provide the practitioner of criminal law in Canada with a guide through the maze of law surrounding the inchoate crime called criminal conspiracy"(p.iii). This intention has been realized. Professor Goode has presented a thorough, clear and well-documented account of the intricacies of his subject as they are likely to affect a conspiracy trial. And intricate the subject is, because the nature of the offence is difficult to define, and because the evidentiary and procedural problems which attend the conspiracy trial are easily susceptible to misunderstanding and confusion. Following a brief overview of …

The Forerunners Of The Protestant Reformation, Suresh Heraman May 1977

The Forerunners Of The Protestant Reformation, Suresh Heraman

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "This research paper is a study based mainly on the forerunners of the Protestant Reformation in Western Europe from 910 to 1498 A.D. Some consideration is given to the earlier history of the Church, to show the cause for the reforms to follow.

Sources used for the research of this paper are listed in the bibliography. Since this research is historical it has relied on the works of others who have written on the history of the Christian Church. No effort is made to give a history of theology but to discover why the reforms were needed."

A Folkloric Perspective On Traditional Auctioneering, Daniel Steed Jr. May 1977

A Folkloric Perspective On Traditional Auctioneering, Daniel Steed Jr.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

To date, the auction as a type of folklore performance has not been adequately researched. In order to place auctions in perspective as folklore, chapter one of this thesis reviews the history of auctions in the United States. Chapter one further presents the idea of the auctioneer as a folk occupational specialist. The second chapter is concerned with the skills of an active Kentucky auctioneer, who offers, during a series of interviews, insights concerning his performance skills. The third, and final, chapter attempts to construct a theoretical base for researching auctions as folklore performance. The criteria by which any given …

A Collection Of Italian Opera Libretti In The Syracuse University Libraries, Aubrey S. Garlington Jr.

The Courier

In this article, Aubrey S. Garlington, Jr. explains the historical tension between the composer of the opera and its librettist, arguing that although the adulation of the composer has steadily risen in modern history, there cannot be an opera without a libretto. He also notes that 18th and early 19th century libretti are becoming more important in musicology, and analyzes a collection of Italian libretti that can be found at Syracuse University's Bird Library.
