Puros Técnicos And Luchadores Rudos: Debating The New Cultural History Among Latin Americanists, Carl Friesenhahn Feb 2024

Puros Técnicos And Luchadores Rudos: Debating The New Cultural History Among Latin Americanists, Carl Friesenhahn

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This essay dives into the debate and surrounding context of a special issue of the Hispanic American Historical Review. It was on the new cultural history—its usefulness, its methods, and its relation to truth. I argue that the new cultural historians eventually vanquished their critics and internalized their methods and epistemology within historians of Latin America at large. Stemming from earlier texts, the special issue of the HAHR is the most revealing collection of texts on the philosophical foundations of the new cultural history. It showcases scholarly activity from supporters and detractors of the novel movement with considerable focus on …

Digital Echoes: The Influence Of Internet And Social Media On The “Ideal” Conception Of Motherhood In Indonesian Stunting Programs, Sari Damar Ratri

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This article examines how information about childhood care available on social media affects the construction of ideal Indonesian mothers. Specifically, I pay closer attention to how women's roles and experiences in stunting prevention campaigns are portrayed and enacted online in the context of the digital socialization of these programs. Based on online ethnographic research from 2021-2023, which examined social media accounts of healthcare professionals and mothers, this article explores the construction of “ideal” motherhood within the digital realm of stunting programs. As health care professionals’ social media accounts carried messages and embodied the authoritative power of medical knowledge, they helped …

An Afrocentric Source Code For Afrofuturism: Welcome To Neosankofa, Aaron X. Smith

Third Stone

This research investigates the potentialities for ancient African wisdom to guide humanity into a more harmonious, advanced Afrofuturistic positive coexistence. The research presented herein, investigates the long unbroken emphasis on the art and cultural strategy of looking back in order to optimally move forward as a community, a nation, and an international collective. A guiding question in this historical investigation is, how does the African past inform, empower, and elevate us into the future. The results of this Afrocentric ethnographic interrogation unearth little known connections to the subject Afrocentric Futurism, from previous Academics who expressed similar notions later defined under …

Historical Interpretations Of The Formation Of Public Education For Freedpeople In Reconstruction South, Daniel C. Napoli Jan 2024

Historical Interpretations Of The Formation Of Public Education For Freedpeople In Reconstruction South, Daniel C. Napoli

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

I started my historiography paper by gathering and analyzing varied historical interpretations of the formation of public education in the South. These sources ranged over one hundred years from the beginning of the twentieth century to the two-thousands. These sources contradicted each other in many ways due to inaccurate and biased depictions of it from early Reconstruction historians. After analyzing the trends and shifts in historical interpretation on this topic I crafted an argument for which category of interpretation is best. This was based on many factors including historical accuracy, clarity, and level of bias.

Anti-Chinese Violence In The United States, 1850-1910, Nicholas W. Mason Jan 2024

Anti-Chinese Violence In The United States, 1850-1910, Nicholas W. Mason

Dissertations - ALL

When the first Chinese immigrants arrived in large numbers in the United States during the California Gold Rush, they found not only abundant economic opportunity, but also violent racial hatred. Racism, nativism, and perceptions of economic tensions combined to produce a complex system of racial violence that spanned the region and the nation and culminated with lynchings, forced removals, and massacres. This project seeks to document anti-Chinese violence in the United States for the purpose of furthering education and scholarly research on the subject.

On The Genre Of Shushi, Oinghua Wang Wang Oinghua, Ph.D., Is A Professor In The Department Of Chinese Language And Literature, East China Normal University. Wang's Research Focuses On Ancient Chinese Novels, Fiction Studies, Classical Narrative Genres And Narratology.

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Shushi (literally, writing miscellanea), a form of narrative writing, emerged since the Tang and Song dynasties as a relatively independent genre affiliated to “titles and postscripts” and “miscellaneous writing.” It shared commonalities with miscellaneous notes and writings, as they all consisted of comments and critiques on events, with some precisely narrating about individuals and occurrences. The term shushi was influenced by conceptualizations in historical studies and the genre of “narrative poems.” During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the production of shushi flourished to the extent that it evolved into a distinct genre characterized by strong narrative elements. The majority of …

Religious Tourism Attractions At Debre Aron Rock-Hewn Church, Meket District, Northern Ethiopia, Tsegaye Ebabey Demissie

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Ethiopia, which has a diverse sacred cultural heritage, has enormous fortunes as far as religious tourism is concerned. Its ancient Christianity has left numerous religious and historical legacies, ranging from architecturally sophisticated sacred monuments to living religious practices. However, the development of these legacies for religious tourism is hindered mainly due to a lack of research and consideration by tourism developers. This study aims to investigate the potential tourism value of Debre Aron Monastery, which is one of the most overlooked religious sites in northern Ethiopia. To this end, the study’s data, which are analysed qualitatively, were collected through literature …

The Fallacy Of Composition, Its Wide-Ranging Applications In Economics/Business And Why Systems Science Is Appropriate For Economic And Business Research, Jeffrey Yi-Lin Forrest, Joachim Wagner, Jennifer Nightingale, Huan Guo, Jennifer Roy Jan 2024

The Fallacy Of Composition, Its Wide-Ranging Applications In Economics/Business And Why Systems Science Is Appropriate For Economic And Business Research, Jeffrey Yi-Lin Forrest, Joachim Wagner, Jennifer Nightingale, Huan Guo, Jennifer Roy

Pennsylvania Economic Review

This paper explores how widely the erroneous logic of reasoning of the fallacy of composition has been employed in many areas of knowledge, especially in economic and business studies. It then shows why systems science and methodology are truly appropriate for investigating organizations, evolutions and interactions of business entities by focusing on emergent macro-level properties that are not explainable by the characteristics of micro-level individuals. To demonstrate the potentially magnificent consequence of this proposal, a theorem of general systems is displayed to confirm how unintended and uncoordinated micro-level individual desires can naturally lead to macro-level phenomena, such as racial segregation …

Questioning Reality: The Progressive Development Of Modern Physics, Joshua Lancman Jan 2024

Questioning Reality: The Progressive Development Of Modern Physics, Joshua Lancman

STEM for Success Showcase

Humanity has a tendency to divide time. The past is distinct from the present which is entirely separate from the future. In supposedly 20-20 vision history is neatly divided into different sections, distinct eras with sharp lines between them. What is present and in the future is always modern. What is past is something else with another name.

Yet time is not divided so neatly. We know this living through it: years and decades blend into one another in a non-uniform progression. To divide human history into separate eras is a necessary simplification, as it helps to ascribe order onto …

Coming Home Nw: A Compelling Invitation To Connect With Nature For Improving And Sustaining Health, Strengthening Identity, And Deepening Relationship With God, Jennifer Lynn Steinbrenner Hale

Doctor of Leadership

The Covid-19 Pandemic has created an opportunity in local churches of the Pacific Northwest to develop new ways of connecting to God and improving health through movement in nature. The Pandemic damaged physical, mental, and social wellness for individuals and communities, as well as highlighted areas of dysfunction existent before the Pandemic. Research shows that when human beings engage with nature, they experience improved physical, psychological, cognitive, and spiritual health. Through activities such as running, walking, or simply sitting still in a natural environment, participants have the opportunity to deepen their relationship with God and strengthen their identity and understanding …
