The Oldest Grammar Of Hindustani, Tej K. Bhatia
Syracuse Scholar (1979-1991)
The oldest grammar of Hindustani, written by a German in Dutch, was considered to have been lost by most modern scholars until 1931. This article is the first authentic treatment of that rare grammar since it was translated into Latin approximately two and a half centuries ago.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
During 1981 and 1982, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted a cultural resources assessment of ca. 30,000 acres leased to the Carter Mining Company in Uvalde and Zavala Counties, Texas. Known as the East Chacon project, the survey was undertaken to identify and assess the cultural resources of the locality prior to potential modification or destruction due to proposed mining operations. Archaeological and historical sites (149) were identified and recorded that represent a span of human activities from approximately 11,000 B.P. to the Historic period. A detailed description of these site locations, interpretations …

Asset Revaluation And Cost Basis: Capital Revaluation In Corporate Financial Reports, Shizuki Saito
Asset Revaluation And Cost Basis: Capital Revaluation In Corporate Financial Reports, Shizuki Saito
Accounting Historians Journal
The paper is a historical study of the asset revaluation movement and the subsequent establishment of the cost basis in the United States. A survey of the corporate report leads to a generalization that the asset revaluations were fundamentally the adjustments of equity capital triggered by corporate financial policies. The concept of quasi-reorganization then was developed to ensure that the capital revaluation was undertaken for the right reasons. This newly developed concept made the revaluation of equity and assets less useful from the standpoint of corporate financial management. Asset revaluation was thus replaced by the cost principle.

Historical Trends In American Animal Use And Perception, Stephen R. Kellert, Miriam O. Westervelt
International Journal for the Study of Animal Problems
The authors analyze the stories on wildlife carried in four newspapers (two urban – LA Times and Hartford Courant, and two rural – Buffalo Bulletin in Wyoming and the Dawson News, Georgia) using randomly sampled issues from 1900 to 1976. The total sample amounted to 4,873 articles from 1,777 issues of the four newspapers covering 75 years. Three periods, 1921-1927, 1930-1936, and 1961-1967 averaged more than 200 articles a year. Coverage of wildlife issues was lowest during the two World War periods. The articles were coded using a standard typology, including utilitarian and humanistic attitudes. Over the 76 years …

Resource Allocation In Public Education: A Thirty Five Year Historical Study Of Public School Budgets In Clark County, Nevada, William Allan Fisher
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This historical study analyzed thirty five years of public school expenditures for evidence of change in spending patterns to discover whether or not the organizational structure of the schools has been allowed to drift from public expectations; Budget expenditures from year to year were reclassified by the USED codes in Handbook II. This rigorous classification and the LOTUS 123 spread sheet enabled the researcher to hold all data constant; The study demonstrated that school boards' objectives had not changed between 1950 and 1985. Nevertheless, seven fundamental changes occurred in the operation of the schools and that all noninstructional school programs …

The Approach Of An Iowa School District To Program Reorganization, Bruce Lee Tepfer
The Approach Of An Iowa School District To Program Reorganization, Bruce Lee Tepfer
Graduate Research Papers
The growth and development of public education in this country has been documented in scores of textbooks and countless other publications. Such accounts often focus on the external forces in society to which the schools have responded. Those accounts have understandably not often focused on the growth and development of individual school systems. When school systems have been singled out for a special study, they have usually been large urban systems or systems on the "cutting edge" of educational innovation or reform.

The Justices Of The Peace Of Surrey In National And County Politics, 1483-1570. (Volumes I And Ii)., William Baxter Robison Iii
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Surrey provides an excellent case study of the role of justices of the peace in national and county politics in England during the years 1473-1570. Ample documentation exists in the central government records and a rich local collection, the Loseley MSS., and the availability of similar studies for the bordering counties of Hampshire, Kent, and Sussex allows fruitful comparisons. Moreover, though the shire was pulled in many directions by overlapping political and ecclesiastical jurisdictions (e.g., shrievalty, lieutenancy, diocese) and by various regional affinities, there was in Surrey a distinct political county community, the integrity of which all of the Tudors …

Competitive Environment, Business Strategy, And Organization Structure: An Analysis Of Firm Performance., Masoud Hemmasi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research attempts to develop and empirically test an integrative model of business economic performance. The research framework includes certain concepts and relationships that emanate from the literature in Industrial Organization Economics, Business Policy, and Organization Theory. In general, the key tenet of the study is threefold: (a) that there are industry differences in types of challenges confronting top level management; (b) that strategic and organizational responses that different environmental challenges elicit are quite different and somewhat predictable; and (c) that the combination of the environmental, strategic, and organizational characteristics of the organizations affect their economic performance. The sample for …
"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg
"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Thomas S. Kuhn writes of disciplinary paradigms, presuppositions tactily setting the epistemological boundaries of a particular field or of the vision of a particular epoch. In the past decade, a paradigmatic revolution has deeply altered the western world's sense of reality. A new postmodern paradigm has emerged and evidenced itself in such critical approaches to art as semiotics, phenomenology, poststructuralism, and hermeneutics. The aim of the present study is to identify the central theoretical perspective offered by the new paradigm, to examine and define the central critico-historical principles stemming from such a perspective, and to relate these principles to the …

Islamic Law In American Courts, David F. Forte
Islamic Law In American Courts, David F. Forte
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
Nonetheless, the common law judge remains constrained by his own system of adjudication. Not only does he apply the law, he also states it. Yet, he becomes hesitant when he is asked to apply an asserted principle of Islamic law unless he is certain that it truly represents the accepted view and is not some imaginative interpretation. Thus, in interpreting Islamic law, the American judge is more reluctant than a qadi would be in choosing between opposing casuistical arguments in the same kind of case. Ironically, the American judge is also far more restrained in a case involving Islamic law …

Marjorie Gullan: Speech Teacher, Lecturer, Public Reader, And Pioneer In Choral Speaking (Scotland, England)., Ronald Eugene Shields
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Historians of oral interpretation and speech education acknowledge Marjorie Gullan as a pioneer figure. However, they limit their discussion to Gullan's activities as a pioneer in popularizing choral speaking and neglect her other professional involvements as a speech teacher, lecturer, and public reader. This study traces Gullan's career from the earliest years in Scotland to her death, and illustrates the interdependence between her experiences as a speech teacher and her experiments with choral speaking as an educational and artistic technique. Born in the late nineteenth century, Gullan witnessed the waning days of elocution, and throughout her lengthy career, which extended …

The Constitutional Court Reviews The Early Dissolution Of The West German Parliament, Mary Lovik
The Constitutional Court Reviews The Early Dissolution Of The West German Parliament, Mary Lovik
UC Law SF International Law Review
The December 1982 dissolution of the Bundestag, in order to make way for new elections, was only the second time in the thirty-five year history of the Federal Republic that such an event occurred. The 1949 Bonn Constitution provides severely restrictive provisions regarding early dissolution. The Federal Constitutional Court, however, upheld the dissolution proceedings. This Article investigates the legal issues raised by the early dissolution, and the Constitutional Court's decision as to its constitutionality. It also discusses several proposals which have been made which would amend the Bonn Constitution to permit easier dissolution. The dissolution marked an important milestone in …
