The Boys Town Hall Of History: A Case Study In Public History And Exhibition Methods, Jacqueline Ann Mcglade

Student Work

Present-day historians are extremely fortunate. Increased public interest in history has afforded historians the opportunity to expand their professional influence and convey their scholarship through new forms of communication. In order to satisfy a public hunger for history, historians must learn to use information methods rooted in popular appeal and leisure-time activities. Among the current options, the display of linear history and material culture through exhibitions is one of the most overlooked and understudied areas in public history.

Public Policy Toward Corporate Takeovers, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

It should not be government's role to "do something" about hostile takeovers. Many studies show that more harm than good is done when government interferes. Boards of directors need to realize that they need to make choices that serve the desires of their shareholders.

Jumbo: Origin Of The Word And History Of The Elephant, Sandra Lash Shoshani, Jeheskel Shoshani, Fred Dahlinger Jr.

Elephant

"JUMBO" was an African elephant (Loxodonta africana) whose exact place of origin is unknown. He was collected as a calf in 1861, probably in the French Sudan, south of Lake Chad, and was transferred to the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, France. In 1865 he was taken to the London Zoological Gardens, England, where he was named Jumbo. The origin of the name is also unknown. Most likely it originated from Angola, West Africa ("onjamba" = elephant). During 1880-1881 Jumbo showed signs of unreliable temper which paved the way for his sale to the American showman P.T. Barnum in 1882. …

The Image Of The Nurse In A Professional Journal: A Historical Perspective, Dawn Louise Crane

Ellmer School of Nursing Theses & Dissertations

Authors of journal articles contribute to the image of the nurse that is projected to journal readers. The purpose of this study was to explore the image of nursing as portrayed in articles published in Nursing Outlook from 1960-1979. A descriptive study, with content analysis, was conducted using articles concerned with professionalism or nursing education published in Nursing Outlook from 1960-1979 (a time identified as negative for societal images of nursing). The educational background of the authors was noted. Findings indicated that the majority of authors projected the image of a nurse as a well-educated, independent professional; images not reflective …
