Hindu-Christian Dialogue: A Review, Harold Coward Jan 1988

Hindu-Christian Dialogue: A Review, Harold Coward

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Hindu-Christian dialogue has had a long and checkered history. Up until the beginning of this century most of the Hindu-Christian interaction took place in India. The first half of this century saw the expansion of Hindu-Christian discussion to Europe and North America. World-wile pluralism in the decades since the Fifties has resulted in a gradual intensification of this interaction at both the lay and scholarly levels. But aside from sporadic events, there has been no broad and sustained Hindu-Christian dialogue.

Study Of The Pioneers Of Providence, Utah And Their Children, Hazel Mclean Tibbitts

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis poses a number of questions about the pioneers and their decendants: Where did the pioneer settlers of Providence come from? What skills and resources did they bring with them to "tame" the wilderness? Did they come as family units or as single men? What happened as the community grew and the resources were limited? Where did the settlers go or what did they do as the land became scarce? Was limited land the reason for the movement out of the community or were there other considerations? What effects did emigration have on the family ties of the second …

Sallye B. Mathis And Mary L. Singleton: Black Pioneers On The Jacksonville, Florida, City Council, Barbara Hunter Walch

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In 1967 Sallye Brooks Mathis and Mary Littlejohn Singleton were elected the first blacks in sixty years, and the first women ever, to the city council of Jacksonville, Florida. These two women had been raised in Jacksonville in a black community which, in spite of racial discrimination and segregation since the Civil War, had demonstrated positive leadership and cooperative action as it developed its own organizations and maintained a thriving civic life. Jacksonville blacks participated in politics when allowed to do so and initiated several economic boycotts and court suits to resist racial segregation. Black women played an important part …

An Analysis Of Historical Studies Of Literacy Standards From Three Epochs In American Elementary Education, Karen Elizabeth Stinson Hanus Jan 1988

An Analysis Of Historical Studies Of Literacy Standards From Three Epochs In American Elementary Education, Karen Elizabeth Stinson Hanus

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The task of determining the standards of literacy in an historical epoch, the accurate assessment of children's ability to read, and the achievement of universal literacy are like the impossible endeavor of Tantalus in Greek mythology. As one comes closer to achieving one's goal, it changes and moves further away, forever just out of reach. So it is in trying to ascertain absolutes in the field of literacy. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to demonstrate that one definition of literacy is not possible because literacy standards depend upon historical context.

Prominent selected historians' studies of literacy were examined …

Native Trees In An Urban Area: A Case Study Of The Waterloo Metropolitan Area Black Hawk County, Iowa, Alice Christine Robbins

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study investigates the history and role of the native forest in an urban area of about 100 square miles, encompassing the cities of Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Evansdale in Black Hawk County, Iowa. It examines various human influences in an attempt to determine how important each has been in preserving or destroying the natural forest.

The original forests in the study area were concentrated along the rivers and adjacent bluffs. The most serious impacts to the upland forests have been agriculture, residential and commercial development, whereas the floodplain forests have been most affected by industrial expansion, gravel mining, flood …

Nursing And Health Care In Jacksonville, Florida, 1900-1930, Linda Emerson Sabin Jan 1988

Nursing And Health Care In Jacksonville, Florida, 1900-1930, Linda Emerson Sabin

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the development of nursing as a vocation, in the early twentieth century, within the context of a growing southern city and an evolving health care system. Nursing advanced from a domestic service to a recognized vocation during this era. An extensive survey of historical and nursing literature revealed few studies which focus on nursing and health care in an urban context. Those studies identified gave only brief glimpses of nurses and focus on northern cities. This investigation aims to add a southern chapter to the history of nursing and health care in urban settings.

A community systems …

Millennial Thinking And Its Implications For Social Reform: Premillennialism In Urban America, 1865-1925, Dale Walden Johnson Jan 1988

Millennial Thinking And Its Implications For Social Reform: Premillennialism In Urban America, 1865-1925, Dale Walden Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1980 - 1989

A Christian view of the future labelled premillennial dispensationalism developed and replaced postmillennialism in middle nineteenth-century America. Dispensationalism predicts deteriorating conditions, leading to a "rapture" of the true church just prior to the second coming of Christ. After tracing three centuries of millennial thinking in America, this study examines the social reforms sponsored by dispensationalists. Contrary to their escapist, or pessimistic eschatology, selected dispensationalists sponsored a variety of reform measures in the middle nineteenth and early twentieth-century America. This study examines the contributions of five remarkable dispensational, social activists: The Reverends A. J. Gordon, A. T. Pierson, W. B. Riley, …

Reliance Interest In Marriage And Divorce, Margaret F. Brinig, June Carbone

Journal Articles

The first part of this article examines the changing nature of reliance on marriage as the relationship between the spouses and the role of the family has changed. The second section defines the ‘reliance interest,’ as that term has been used to describe contract damages, discusses its application to marriage, and examines the implications for the role of ‘fault’ in the financial allocations to be made upon divorce. The third section describes the varying state reactions to the adoption of no fault divorce and assesses the ability of existing law to protect the reliance interest in marriage. Finally, this article …

Jan Maria Novotny And His Collection Of Books On Economics, Michael Markowski

The Courier

This article describes the life and books of economist Jan Novotny, whose extensive collection is now housed in the Syracuse University Libraries. Novotny believed that a comprehensive, liberal arts education was an essential prerequisite for anyone who wished to study or professionally practice finance and business. The well-roundedness obtained from the humanities, he argued, would lead those in business and finance to make moral and ehtically sound decisions. His collection covers the last five hundred years, consisting of nearly 6,000 books in many different languages. Novotny managed to flee Czechoslavakia with all of these books, which now provide a wealth …

Improving Articulation Between High School And College, John M. Bradley

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article describes the Tennessee State-Wide School-College Collaborative for Educational Excellence, established in 1986 to improve the preparation of high school students entering college. The initiative created six task forces in English, mathematics, science, social studies, foreign language, and the arts, composed of secondary and postsecondary educators. Guided by the College Board’s Academic Preparation for College (Green Book) and the subject-specific “Rainbow Series,” the arts task force focused on theatre, music, dance, and visual arts. Recommendations emphasized sequential, discipline-based curricula, recognition of theatre as equal to art and music, enhanced teacher training, and competency testing. Sample high school theatre courses …
