Chautauqua In Devils Lake, North Dakota: An Historical Study Of The Organization, The Facilities, And Programs, Judy R. Peterson Ryan
Chautauqua In Devils Lake, North Dakota: An Historical Study Of The Organization, The Facilities, And Programs, Judy R. Peterson Ryan
Theses and Dissertations
Chautauqua, a totally American institution which impacted nearly forty million people in its approximately fifty-year existence from 1874 to 1930, was a place to enrich lives through education, inspiration, and recreation. Devils Lake, North Dakota, a small, isolated town on the Midwestern plains, located on the shores of a large, salt-water lake, became the site of the nation's third largest independent Chautauqua in the nation, operating from 1893 to 1929.
This thesis is a study of the history of the Devils Lake Chautauqua, its organization, and development. Included in the research is a study of the national Chautauqua and Lyceum …

The Air Force Comes To North Dakota: A Study In The Site Selection Of Grand Forks And Minot Air Force Bases, Rich J. Nolan
Theses and Dissertations
In 1954 the Air Force decided to locate two air bases in North Dakota. After deciding on locations at Fargo and Bismarck, the Air Force then changed the locations to Grand Forks and Minot. The decision created an uproar in the state as each major city fought to receive a base. Another controversy erupted over the site selection within Grand Forks County when the Air Force changed the locations from its original choice.
A wide variety of research sources were used in the the paper. The papers of United States Senator Milton R. Young were extensively used. Government documents in …
Distinctives Of Corongo Quechua: Historical And Synchronic Perspectives, Daniel J. Hintz
Distinctives Of Corongo Quechua: Historical And Synchronic Perspectives, Daniel J. Hintz
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents the structure of Corongo Quechua from four distinct but complementary perspectives. One, it describes the segmental sound system both historically and synchronically. Two, it provides a substantial amount of data in the form of glossed texts in a variety of genres. Three, it provides a brief description of the morphological structure and a complete list of suffixes with examples. Four, it includes a brief glossary of commonly occurring roots.
The description of the sound system has a comparative focus, examining those aspects of the phonological structure that are distinct from other Quecha dialects. It specifically examines Corongo …

How Privacy Got Its Gender, Anita L. Allen, Erin Mack
How Privacy Got Its Gender, Anita L. Allen, Erin Mack
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This article suggests that the right to privacy, as it was originally described by Warren and Brandeis, reflects their era's gender bias. The authors describe the social, economic and legal background for the original, gender-biased pronouncement of the right, as well as its subsequent development, and how this bias affects legal scholarship in the area today. The authors suggest that legal scholars need to be more sensitive to the gender bias that exists in privacy law, and that alternative analyses which recognize this bias already exist.
Mathews County Shipbuilding Patterns, 1780-1860, Peter Jennings Wrike
Mathews County Shipbuilding Patterns, 1780-1860, Peter Jennings Wrike
History Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the volume and characteristics of a Chesapeake Bay county's shipbuilding activity to assess its impact on American waterborne commerce. The thesis proposes that this county built a significant number of fast sailing vessels in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Previous works on American shipbuilding as well as regional histories have overlooked this county and concentrated on nearby large ports such as Norfolk and Baltimore. This thesis suggests these ports acted more as vessel brokers to the maritime industry than manufacturers and that this county was, among other small bay counties, a major contributor to that …
On The Road To Radical Reform: A Critical Review Of Unger's Politics, Richard F. Devlin
On The Road To Radical Reform: A Critical Review Of Unger's Politics, Richard F. Devlin
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Two aims drive this essay. The first is to provide the reader with an accessible, yet relatively comprehensive, introduction to Roberto Mangabeira Unger's social and legal theory. The second aim is to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of Unger's most recent scholarship and to make some suggestions as to where he goes awry. In particular, the author draws several parallels between the Ungerian enterprise and that of some feminists. The central motivation of the essay is to keep the critical conversation between male radicals and feminists open. To this end, the author posits the possibility of mutually beneficial contributions.
Book Review Essay: Brazilian Race Relations In Hemispheric Perspective, Rhett S. Jones
Book Review Essay: Brazilian Race Relations In Hemispheric Perspective, Rhett S. Jones
Trotter Review
The late Oliver C. Cox, one of the most insightful black Americans from the leftist tradition, was not often fooled. In his classic 1948 work, Caste, Class, and Race, Cox, a long-time professor of sociology at Lincoln University in Missouri, revealed the nonsensical underpinnings of what then passed for the serious study of comparative race relations among sociologists in the United States. So successful was Cox that his book was thoroughly and deeply buried by the sociological establishment. When Pierre L. van den Berghe published Race and Racism: A Comparative Perspective in 1967, sociologists hailed his work as the …

Form And Function In The Administration Of Justice: The Bill Of Rights And Federal Habeas Corpus, Larry W. Yackle
Form And Function In The Administration Of Justice: The Bill Of Rights And Federal Habeas Corpus, Larry W. Yackle
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Part I critiques the Report's insistence that accurate fact finding exhausts, or nearly exhausts, the objectives of criminal justice, identifies the fundamental role of the Bill of Rights in the American political order, and situates federal habeas corpus within that framework. Part II traces the Report's historical review of the federal habeas jurisdiction and critiques the Report's too-convenient reliance on selected materials that, on examination, fail to undermine conventional understandings of the writ's development as a postconviction remedy. Part III responds to the Report's complaints regarding current habeas corpus practice and refutes contentions that the habeas jurisdiction overburdens federal dockets …

United States Regional History As An Instructional Field: The Practice Of College And University History Departments, Carl Abbott
United States Regional History As An Instructional Field: The Practice Of College And University History Departments, Carl Abbott
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
In one sense, American history is "a sequential process of regional development marked by a persistent tension between regional cultures and economic interests and integrative national institutions and values." Since the 1890's, regional history has been an active enterprise supported by academic instruction, leading university presses, specialized journals, and professional organizations. A survey of college and university departments of history yielded data to analyze the present ambiguous position of regional history within the evolving discipline of American historical studies.
The Theology Of Israel's Sea Crossing, Rodger Dalman
The Theology Of Israel's Sea Crossing, Rodger Dalman
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
In Exodus 14:2, God commanded Israel to do a strange thing. God directed Israel to turn from their route, and to walk into a trap. By wandering to the shores of a reed sea, Israel intentionally gave Pharaoh the impression that they were lost, and tempted him to pursue them. Why would God command this? After all, Egypt had already been destroyed. Thousands of Egyptians had died. Pharaoh's will had been broken, and he had let Israel go.. The nation was already leaving Egypt for Palestine. Why did Israel not simply pass through the border fortresses and go on their …

The Ripple Effects Of Slaughter-House: A Critique Of A Negative Rights View Of The Constitution, Michael J. Gerhardt
The Ripple Effects Of Slaughter-House: A Critique Of A Negative Rights View Of The Constitution, Michael J. Gerhardt
Vanderbilt Law Review
Upon seeing Niagara Falls for the first time, Oscar Wilde reportedly remarked that it "would be more impressive if it flowed the other way." I have a similar reaction to a series of narrow Supreme Court interpretations of the fourteenth amendment, beginning with the Slaughter-House Cases, decided in 1872, and extending to the 1989 decisions in Webster v. Reproductive Health Services and DeShaney v. Winnebago County Department of Social Services. In Slaughter-House the Court interpreted the privileges or immunities clause of the fourteenth amendment as merely protecting interests other federal laws already protected, while recently the Court interpreted the due …

Utopia And Bureaucracy: The Fall Of Rajneeshpuram, Oregon, Carl Abbott
Utopia And Bureaucracy: The Fall Of Rajneeshpuram, Oregon, Carl Abbott
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
During 1981-1985, the followers of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh built a large utopian community in eastern Oregon's solitude and named it Rajneeshpuram. While Rajneeshpuram appeared to be physically isolated and removed from government intervention, it was actually embedded in a dense system of laws and bureaucratic regulations, quite within reach of local, state, and national bureaucracies. It was this ability of the local and state regulators to limit the development that was one of the major factors for the sudden collapse of Rajneeshpuram in the fall of 1985. Other contributing factors were the growing disaffection and factionalism within the commune leadership …
