Why We Need A Long View Of Abolition To End The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Karen Sotiropoulos Jul 2024

Why We Need A Long View Of Abolition To End The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Karen Sotiropoulos

History Faculty Publications

Drawing on experiential, literary and historical narratives, this article connects the long history shaping the school-to-prison-pipeline to the contemporary experiences of Black youth in today’s educational system. It maps abolitionism from its origins as a movement to end slavery through the ongoing Black freedom struggles that have challenged state and vigilante violence throughout the eras of Jim Crow and Civil Rights to today’s efforts to dismantle the prison state. By situating the criminalization of African American education from our nation’s founding until the present with particular focus on the post Brown years, the article stresses how policies that funded policing …

Q & A: Pastor, Professor, Scholar, And Leader: An Interview, Linda Gray Jul 2024

Q & A: Pastor, Professor, Scholar, And Leader: An Interview, Linda Gray

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

In a Q&A format, pastor, professor, scholar, and leader Eric Newberg talks about his forthcoming book, Paradigms of Global Spirit-Empowered Leaders. It is organized in four parts: (1) defining characteristics of Spirit-empowered leadership, (2) notable Spirit-empowered leaders, (3) global paradigms or models, and (4) benchmarks for leadership development. Spirit-empowered leadership is a type of leadership distinguished by a primary focus on the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit. While leadership is a spiritual gift, it also requires practical skills that must be developed. Spirit-empowered leadership can be categorized five paradigms of charismatic leadership (apostle, prophet, healing evangelist, “pastorpreneur,” and teacher/scholar). …

Ridgecrest: Past, Present & Future, Sunanda Sharmin

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The goal of historic preservation is to record our understanding of the past but also, look into the future. Preserving old buildings, structures and landscapes reduces carbon emission and preserves cherished glimpses of our shared human history. Consequently, adapting our treasured historic sites to endure the mounting impact of climate related challenges—be it rising sea levels, tempestuous storms, inundating floods, relentless droughts, or raging wildfires—stands as an imperative mission.

This thesis documents a historic landscape - the Ridgecrest Drive in Albuquerque, New Mexico and then explores principles and ideas that need to be considered to generate a more responsive setting …

Review Of On The Resurrection: Evidences Volume 1, Brian G. Chilton Jul 2024

Review Of On The Resurrection: Evidences Volume 1, Brian G. Chilton

Liberty Theological Review

Dr. Brian Chilton reviews the first volume of Dr. Gary Habermas's magnum opus On the Resurrection: Evidences. Chilton summarizes Habermas's work, offering key themes found throughout the book. Then, he analyzes the methodology of the book and confronts the possible objections offered by popular naysayers of the minimal facts approach. Chilton ultimately deduces that the naysayers objections are overblown and that Habermas's approach stands on its own.

Poles And Puerto Ricans: Immigration And Assimilation In The Pioneer Valley, Gabriel S. Proia Jul 2024

Poles And Puerto Ricans: Immigration And Assimilation In The Pioneer Valley, Gabriel S. Proia

Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal

This paper attempts to explain why Polish immigrant farmers who came to the Pioneer Valley around the turn of the century assimilated more fully into the dominant culture and achieved on average greater economic success than Puerto Rican immigrant farmers who engaged in similar work in the same region roughly fifty years later. I begin by reviewing American Studies literature on assimilation dynamics to develop a framework for qualitatively evaluating how both groups changed over time. The evaluation is thereafter based on local newspaper articles and secondary ethnographic and historical literature from throughout the twentieth century, as well as interviews …

Time And Imagined Futures In Eastern African Art Forms, Alex Perullo

Politics, Law, and Society Faculty Journal Articles

This article introduces the NJAS special issue “Art and Imagined Futures in Eastern Africa”, edited by Alex Perullo, Claudia Böhme, and Christina Woolner, and has not been peer-reviewed. Artists in eastern Africa use songs, poems, fiction, cartoons, and other artistic forms to explore their lived experiences and future possibilities. Through their art they can envision alternatives to their current experiences, contest social and political problems, and reveal the dangers of complacency. They can also grapple with regret at missed opportunities or develop a sense of longing for a future that could or should have been had different decisions been made. …

French Interwar Popular Romance And Ideals Of Femininity: A Literary And Historical Study Of Magali, Kelly Kamrath Jul 2024

French Interwar Popular Romance And Ideals Of Femininity: A Literary And Historical Study Of Magali, Kelly Kamrath

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Against a background of political turmoil, economic crises, and cultural upsets from both within and abroad, France between the two World Wars was home to a flourishing romance novel industry. At first glance lighthearted love stories seem simple and frivolous in comparison to the canonical writings of the time, such as those of Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre. However, this literature was far from art for art’s sake. The romance novels of interwar France, written half a century before the scholarship of romance fiction would truly begin, have yet to receive the attention they deserve. During the interwar period, …

I uncover and explore two models for masculinity in marriage in Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew and The Tragedy of Julius Caesar: one where it is an assumption and the other a constant fight. Additionally, I offer a teaching unit on characterization designed for a dual enrollment writing class that aims to teach grammar in the context of writing.

Three Zafimaniry Carvings From The Southern Highlands Of Madagascar And Their Symbolic Meaning, Emily Krupp Jul 2024

Three Zafimaniry Carvings From The Southern Highlands Of Madagascar And Their Symbolic Meaning, Emily Krupp

Theses

The Zafimaniry people are a community living in the southern highlands of Madagascar, most known for their geometric, low-relief works of art that they carve onto wooden surfaces throughout their villages. The shapes that make up the designs signify the Zafimaniry people's ideologies, but motifs carved into the homes specifically represent their beliefs about marriage and societal structure. Three metaphorical symbols have been translated within the motifs by the Zafimaniry people as the patriarch, the family, and the community. A comparative cultural study between the motifs on Zafimaniry window shutters and Swahili doorways reveal similarities in material culture, visual elements …

Animal To Human Scaling Of Cervical Spine Injury Tolerance In Frontal Impact, Jesse William Gerringer Jul 2024

Animal To Human Scaling Of Cervical Spine Injury Tolerance In Frontal Impact, Jesse William Gerringer

Dissertations (1934 -)

Cervical spine (c-spine) injury tolerance is not well understood during severe frontal impacts. While these c-spine injuries are rare, they are disproportionally debilitating to the individual in the long term. To study the dynamics of c-spine injury during frontal impact, this dissertation repurposed historical kinematic data from frontal impact experiments using a modern statistical and modeling approach. Frontal impact data was obtained from two historic sources: non-human primate (NHP) experiments from the Naval Biodynamics Laboratory and human research volunteer (HRV) experiments from the Air Force Research Laboratory. First, injury probability curves were calculated from published NHP peak head kinematics and …

The Genealogy Of Turkish Transnational Movement In Indonesia, Dhita Ayomi Purwaningtyas, Yulia Rimapradesi, Achmad Reza Hutama

Journal Of Middle East and Islamic Studies

The majority of transnational Islamic groups in Indonesia come from the Middle East, which emphasizes various missions, such as purification and political ideology, and some others are Salafi-jihadist. Turkish transnational movement's mission mostly is religious da'wah through culture and education without spreading any political ideology, including the Nur Movement, the students of Bediuzzaman Said Nursi. Amid suspicions about the increasingly widespread cases of extremism and radicalism in Indonesia by transnational groups that have brought the antithesis of Indonesian Islam, the Nur Movement has been able to enter and develop. This article analyzes the genealogy and distribution of the Nur Movement …

Senses Of The Word /Tɛ̀ː/ In Old Thai (13th – 15th Century Ce), Khet Lengwiriyakul

Journal of Letters

Holding an assumption that the word /tɛ̀ː/ in Thai is polysemous and that the word’s senses are historically related, this research intends to conduct a historical study on the word. The purpose of this study is to find out whether /tɛ̀ː/ in the past used to have senses other than the ones existing in the present. This study aims to analyze the senses of /tɛ̀ː/ in Old Thai (13th – 15th century CE) by applying criteria proposed in Tyler and Evans’s Principled Polysemy (Tyler and Evans 2001; Tyler and Evans 2003; Evans 2004; Evans 2005). By applying the criteria, collocates …

A New Form Of Accountability In Jpme: The Shift To Outcomes-Based Military Education, Kristin Mulready-Stone Jun 2024

A New Form Of Accountability In Jpme: The Shift To Outcomes-Based Military Education, Kristin Mulready-Stone

Joint Force Quarterly

The programs responsible for teaching joint professional military education (JPME) Phases I and II are undergoing a significant transformation in demonstrating their mission fulfillment. Governed by the Officer Professional Military Education Policy (OPMEP), particularly OPMEP-F, implemented on May 15, 2020, these institutions are moving towards outcomes-based military education (OBME). Unlike previous versions, OPMEP-F requires programs to prove achievement on defined learning outcomes, marking a departure from merely demonstrating coverage of mandated content. This shift reflects a comprehensive change in validating JPME program success and ensuring graduates reach specified levels of achievement on defined learning outcomes.

Reimagining Temporality: Exploring The Intersection Of Time And Trauma In Design Research, Catherine Wieczorek, Laura Forlano

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Time plays a central role in design research, influencing how people complete daily tasks, plan for the future, and interact with technology. Designers employ various methods, such as journey maps, diary studies, temporal probes, and storytelling, to articulate their conceptualizations of time. They use time to ground findings and envision future possibilities through tools like systems maps and the futures cone. This paper critically examines the use of time-based techniques in design research, highlighting their limitations and capabilities. It explores the intersection of time and trauma, acknowledging trauma's impact on an individual's perception and experience of time. The paper advocates …

Changes In Colonial Perspectives On Native Americans And Native-Christian Hybridity, Thomas Kelly Hassani Jun 2024

Changes In Colonial Perspectives On Native Americans And Native-Christian Hybridity, Thomas Kelly Hassani

Masters Theses

The American West of the late nineteenth century is too often exhibited by scholars who study it from the point of view of the westward expansion of European settlers on to Native land. However, the nuance of this short period should be examined with careful consideration. With westward expansion came the proselytization of Christianity to the Native populations who retained their own religious ideology. Historians and anthropologists have studied extensively the viewpoints of Christians and practitioners of Native faiths on topics of faith, prayer, and spirituality. However, similar examinations have yet to examine the more accepting and permissive attitudes that …

Men And Women In Uniform: Insiders’ Perspectives On Women’S Leadership Status In Tanzania People’S Defence Force, Martin Mujuni, Edwin Babeiya, Jun 2024

Men And Women In Uniform: Insiders’ Perspectives On Women’S Leadership Status In Tanzania People’S Defence Force, Martin Mujuni, Edwin Babeiya,

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper examines the leadership status of women in the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF). It was guided by three specific objectives: to understand the position of women’s leadership role; identify the challenges constraining women from holding leadership positions; and to examine the measures being taken to enable women hold leadership positions in the TPDF. It collected opinions from the research participants serving—or who served—in the military regarding the position of women as leaders. The study leading to the paper employed a qualitative research approach to collect data from 22 purposively selected respondents. The study found that women hold low …

Operation Villagization And Its Implications For Wildlife Conservation In South-Western Serengeti, Tanzania: The Case Of Maswa Game Reserve, Ca. 1970s–1980s, Beny Nampesya, Hezron Kangalawe

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Operation Villagization in Tanzania attracted the attention of many scholars, including historians, inside and outside the country. This is because it is one of the major policies in the history of Tanzania that affected many sectors. Despite the extensive scope of these studies, minimal attention has been devoted to exploring the connections between this operation and wildlife conservation. The current article uses the case of the Maswa Game Reserve (MGR) to examine the extent to which the operation affected wildlife resources conservation. In essence, it argues that poor implementation of the operation led to enormous encroachments in the MGR, which …

"They Say Where There’S Smoke, There's Fire; But Sometimes It's A Self-Induced Fire": Understanding Claims Of Unequal Treatment Among Mexican-American Officers In The Los Angeles Police Department, Roberto Gallardo

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"Serving as an ethnographic case study and utilizing qualitative interviews, this study focuses on Mexican-American police officers and their perceptions of claims of unequal treatment based on race/ethnicity from other officers. The study finds that officers ideologically stand firmly against racism and discrimination. When non-overt claims of unequal treatment based on race/ethnicity are encountered, officers develop negative perceptions of claiming officers. Officers revert to individualized, merit-based, and other colorblind justifications to interpret and dismiss the claims. It is argued that given the lack of the overt nature of most claims today, facilitated by the most common occupational context in which …

The Role Of Herbert Hoover In Addressing The Food Crisis After World War Ii And His Mission In West Germany 1946-1947, Rawa Haider Saleh, Majed Khaled Ahmed

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

The years after World War II are considered the most difficult in the history of European countries and the world, due to the political, economic and social crises that occurred during them. Since the United States of America was the most powerful country economically, it adopted the mission of famine relief for political motives that precede humanity. The Truman administration chose to Former President Herbert Hoover to take over that mission, this reason, the study attempts to shed light on the role played by Herbert Hoover in addressing the post-World War II food crisis through his chairmanship of the Famine …
