Understanding The Alphabet Soup Of The Special Education System, Grace Hansen
Understanding The Alphabet Soup Of The Special Education System, Grace Hansen
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Transition age students with disabilities are increasingly expected to practice self advocacy and take an active role in planning their futures. However, a review of existing special education literature reveals a significant gap. While substantial resources exist to help parents and general education teachers navigate the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process. Accessible for age appropriate tools designed directly for student understanding remain scarce. To bridge this divide, this project introduces a student centered curriculum framework designed for secondary students in grades 7 through 12. Drawing upon foundational special education pedagogy, the project breaks down complex IEP terminology, processes, and meeting …
Framing Schools As A Second Home For Children, Christian Duncan
Framing Schools As A Second Home For Children, Christian Duncan
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
This capstone explores how a structured professional development program can create greater unity and mutual understanding among educators by framing the school as a “second home” comparable to a parent household. The project developed from observations of division, dissatisfaction, and strained relationships among educators and considers how these dynamics can influence school culture and the stability students experience. Key influences included research on child development, home and school stability, teacher well-being, professional relationships, and effective professional development. Research from Darling-Hammond and Cook-Harvey (2018) emphasized the importance of emotional and physical safety, supportive adult relationships, and belonging for student development, while …

Rooted In Wonder: Cultivating A Connection To The Environment Through Nature-Based Learning In Central Mexico, Mikaela Tennis
Rooted In Wonder: Cultivating A Connection To The Environment Through Nature-Based Learning In Central Mexico, Mikaela Tennis
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Children are spending less time outdoors and feeling increasingly disconnected from the natural world. This reduced exposure and lack of interaction limits opportunities to form early connections with nature, which have lasting benefits into adulthood. Nature-based learning approaches have been proven to increase a sense of nature connectedness, which in turn strengthens one’s environmental attitudes and behaviors while supporting mental health and well-being. To address limited access to nature-based learning experiences in Central Mexico, this capstone draws from research on nature connectedness, nature-based learning, and nature center design to answer the question, How can a nature-based learning center be designed …

Teaching Environmental Justice In Middle School: A Unit Plan For Middle School, Aiesha Osman
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
This capstone project focuses on the different environmental justice challenges faced by different communities. Many middle school students learn about environmental concepts without specifically learning about different environmental benefits and risks. This capstone project involves developing a curriculum unit for middle school students which introduces environmental justice concepts and helps students recognize that environmental benefits and burdens are not evenly distributed. This project was influenced by environmental justice theory, culturally responsive teaching, socioscientific issues, place-based learning and Understanding by Design. This unit design uses a backward design approach where the outcomes are identified first, then followed by goals based on …
Encouraging Pollinator Friendly Behaviors Among Urban Residents, Addison Motta
Encouraging Pollinator Friendly Behaviors Among Urban Residents, Addison Motta
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Pollinator decline is a significant issue which threatens biodiversity, global food systems, and the stability of ecosystems. There are numerous resources available that address pollinator friendly behaviors, but many assume that the audience has access to private land in a suburban or rural area. The recommendations in these resources may be inaccessible to apartment dwellers, renters, and other urban residents with limited control over outdoor spaces. This capstone explores the guiding question: how can an interactive pollinator education kit increase awareness and encourage pollinator-friendly behaviors among urban residents. A review of literature related to pollinator ecology, urban ecosystems, environmental education, …
Upporting Residential Camp Counselors: “Wellness Workshops” To Mitigate Staff Stress, Aimee Doyle
Upporting Residential Camp Counselors: “Wellness Workshops” To Mitigate Staff Stress, Aimee Doyle
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Research has demonstrated that residential camping holds tremendous value in the life of a young person. A child’s participation in the “Radical Utopian Experience” provided by a typical summer camp has been shown to increase independence, confidence, perseverance, responsibility, empathy, compassion, and an affinity for nature, often with life-long effects. Yet, while camps focus heavily on the growth and development of campers, the needs of counseling staff are sometimes overlooked. Young counselors themselves are still developing emotionally and socially, while they often shoulder significant responsibilities throughout the summer. This capstone project focused on the wellness needs of residential camp counselors …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is a minimally invasive treatment for glioblastoma that increases blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability. However, the mechanisms and spatiotemporal features of this effect remain unclear. It is also unknown whether LITT promotes release of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA).
METHODS: Using our previously developed LITT mouse model, we employed single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) to investigate gene expression changes in endothelial cells following LITT in the naive mouse brain. Brains were also harvested at multiple time points to assess LITT effects on tight junction (TJ) integrity and transcytosis via immunofluorescence and transmission electron microscopy. Human glioblastoma tissues were …

Improving Infant Health Equity: What Have We Learned, What Do We Do, Dewayne M Pursley, F Sessions Cole
2020-Current year OA Pubs
The United States neonatal and infant mortality rates have declined substantially over the last six decades. Despite these reductions, significant racial disparities in mortality and other important outcomes have persisted. While increased risk of preterm birth is a major contributor to these differences, racial inequities in risk-adjusted outcomes such as gestational age-specific and major congenital anomaly-associated mortality remain. Race-specific differences in inter- and intra-neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) practices associated with worse outcomes for infants of color suggest opportunities for reducing these disparate health outcomes during and after NICU hospitalization. Identifying NICU-based contributing factors and implementing factor-specific improvement strategies can …

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a disorder in very low birth weight (VLBW, < 1500 g) infants, associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Earlier detection of NEC may improve outcomes. We hypothesized that NEC's physiological signature resembles that of sepsis and that our model developed for sepsis, the Pulse Oximetry Warning System (POWS), would also predict NEC.
OBJECTIVES: Assess relationships between continuous heart rate (HR) and oxygen saturation (SpO
METHODS: In a retrospective multicenter analysis, we studied VLBW infants at four level IV NICUs, identifying cases of late-onset sepsis (LOS) and NEC (Bell stages 2 or 3). Using HR and SpO
RESULTS: Among 3914 infants evaluated, 5% had NEC and 13% had LOS. Cardiorespiratory data analysis showed that HR/SpO
CONCLUSION: NEC shares a cardiorespiratory signature with LOS. POWS predicted NEC with a dynamic rise before clinical diagnosis.
IMPACT: A cardiorespiratory early warning score analyzing …

Soil Moisture Regime Effects On Greenhouse Gas Emissions In A Native Tallgrass Prairie In The Ozark Highlands, Thomas William Dockery
Soil Moisture Regime Effects On Greenhouse Gas Emissions In A Native Tallgrass Prairie In The Ozark Highlands, Thomas William Dockery
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Ozark Highlands is an ecoregion in the mid-southern portion of the United States that is characterized by a mosaic of tallgrass prairies, oak (Quercus spp.) savannas, and oak-hickory (Carya spp.) forests, which represents a unique biophysical transition zone between the relatively dry grasslands of the west and the humid forests of the southeast. Quantifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, namely carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), from natural, undisturbed ecosystems is critical to understanding atmospheric warming and climate-change implications. The objective of this study was to simultaneously evaluate CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions in an aquic and …
Alternative Methods To Improve Livestock Performance While Grazing Low-Quality Forages., Ivan Raynard Thomas Jr
Alternative Methods To Improve Livestock Performance While Grazing Low-Quality Forages., Ivan Raynard Thomas Jr
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Stocker cattle producers in the southeastern part of the U.S. heavily depend on traditional forages such as bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon] pastures during the warm season for grazing. Summer annual forages offer stocker cattle operations a valuable alternative source of forage. These forages have high yield potential and can help extend the grazing season. This is particularly beneficial during the summer months when traditional forage sources may be limited. Warm-season annual grasses may experience a decrease in crude protein concentrations during late summer and early fall. As a result, it may be necessary to find alternative sources of crude protein or …
I Can’T Fight This Feeling Anymore: Investigating The Influence Of Cognitive Emotion-Related Impulsivity On Behavioral Impulsivity Through The Lens Of Emotion Regulation In Daily Life, Dylan Shelton
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Emotion-related impulsivity is a transdiagnostic risk factor that is seen across a wide range of psychiatric disorders. Traditionally, emotion-related impulsivity has been studied at the trait level, reflecting that it is something that someone has rather than something that they do. However, recent studies have highlighted the importance of viewing emotion-related impulsivity as a dynamic process that occurs in response to momentary emotional experiences. However, it is less clear about the influence of attentional and evaluative processes on downstream behavioral responses that may be aimed at rapidly regulating emotion. This study aimed to investigate emotion-related impulsivity through the lens of …

Remote Sensing-Derived Urban Heat Islands And Land Surface Phenology, Raihan Sorker
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Thermal remote sensing has been widely applied to characterize urban heat islands (UHI) and their relationship to land use; however, few studies have explored the relationship between land surface temperature (LST) and land surface phenology (LSP).
