Charting Your Own Course: Diverse Paths To Occupational Health Psychology, Irvin Sam Schonfeld
Charting Your Own Course: Diverse Paths To Occupational Health Psychology, Irvin Sam Schonfeld
Publications and Research
This piece describes my pathway, via stressful work experiences, into occupational health psychology (OHP). Those work experiences combined with my later training in epidemiology at Columbia led me to the study of work, stress, and health. I briefly describe key research experiences with Joe Mazzola of Meredith College (the role of qualitative research in theory development and hypothesis generation) and Renzo Bianchi of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (research on burnout–depression overlap and the creation of scales to assess occupational depression, occupational anxiety, and pandemic-related anxiety). The piece concludes with ideas for newcomers to OHP for getting the …

Crafting And Conducting A Learner Assembly – An Adaptable Framework That Amplifies The Learner Voice, Barry J. Ryan, Fionnuala Darby, Shaun Ferns
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
Making learner needs the focus in all aspects of their learning journey is increasingly important in higher education. However, ensuring a sustained and impactful voice for learners can be challenging given the multifaceted demands on learners. Here we detail how we built and used a Learner Assembly to address some of these challenges in a large Irish university. Guided by an initial design vision, a set of Learner Assembly Principles and Implementation Framework were collaboratively crafted using a Vision-Based Design approach. Our Learner Assembly manifested as a gathering of learners which convened to explore a topic that was important to …

Neuroma following nerve injury and/or amputation is a debilitating condition with significant impacts on quality of life. Several approaches exist to prevent or treat neuroma and/or reduce associated pain; however, these approaches are not consistently effective, facile, or widely accessible. The present study characterizes a xenogeneic nerve cap graft device (NCGD) composed of decellularized porcine nerve. The NCGD was assessed for its ability to inhibit nerve growth, neuroma formation, and pain in rodent models of sciatic neurectomy and tibial neuroma transposition. The NCGD provided a neuroinhibitory substrate that abated and interrupted nerve growth within 5 mm of the nerve stump …

Effective post-operative pain management following hip arthroplasty is critical to improving recovery, reducing opioid consumption, enhancing mobility, and reducing the risk of complications for patients. Multimodal anesthesia strategies, including the supra inguinal fascia iliac block (SIFIB) and the periarticular nerve group (PENG) block have become the new point of focus as opposed to traditional methods previously used. This narrative review compares the SIFIB and the PENG block in their efficacy to treat post-operative pain management. Mechanism of action, safety, patient outcomes, and clinical applications are compared between the two blocks for evaluation. Clinical studies have indicated that both blocks reduce …

In Australia, skin cancer has the highest incidence of all cancer types, where Therapeutic Goods Association-approved, broad-spectrum sunscreens are recommended to prevent skin carcinogenesis. Commercial sunscreen ingredients, however, have been associated with negative impacts on human health, animal health and the environment. Together, the perceived harmful effects of commercial sunscreens have driven a trend towards home formulation of natural sunscreens, recipes for which are widely available online. Scientific evidence to support the efficacy of natural sunscreens, however, is lacking. We tested the efficacy of a natural homemade sunscreen (NHSS) published online by a wellness blogger with the aim to determine …

Background: Chronic subdural haematoma (CSDH) is a common neurosurgical problem, increasingly prevalent due to an ageing population. Conservative management is an option for asymptomatic or mild cases, though data on outcomes is limited. Aim/Objective: This study aims to address critical gaps in understanding around conservatively managedCSDH and whether there are features that can predict progression and the longer-term prognosis of these patients. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed at a major trauma centre in the UK. All patients with chronic subdural haematoma referred from March 2019 to March 2021 were included and grouped into surgical or conservative management. Demographic, …
Re Embracing A Lost Identity: Second Generation Russian American Experience Growing Up In A Cultural Conflict., Joanna Elise Destout
Re Embracing A Lost Identity: Second Generation Russian American Experience Growing Up In A Cultural Conflict., Joanna Elise Destout
2025 Symposium
This paper explores the complex experiences of second-generation Russian-American immigrants through the personal narrative of Anastasia, a young woman whose journey highlights the psychological and cultural tensions of growing up between two worlds. By delving into her story, the research illustrates how the aftermath of the Soviet Union’s collapse and the challenges of American assimilation contribute to mental health struggles and identity fragmentation. The study incorporates both personal interviews and a review of literature on post-Soviet nostalgia, Americanization, and cultural stigmas surrounding mental illness among Russian immigrants. Anastasia’s upbringing was shaped by the conflicting values of her parents’ Soviet past …

Session 4: Analyzing The Benefits Of Artificial Intelligence To Racially Inclusive Democracy, Spencer Overton, Jeffrey Omari
SITIE Symposiums
This keynote discussion explored the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), race, and democratic governance, focusing on the challenges and opportunities AI presents for creating a racially inclusive democracy. Professor Overton argued that while AI has transformative potential, it is currently influenced by actors and systems that may unintentionally (or intentionally) weaken racial equity. The spread of AI technologies—without proper safeguards—has opened new pathways for reinforcing structural inequalities, especially in the democratic process.

The Significance Of Labels: From Shy And Lazy To Autistic And Adhd, Katrine K. Bechsgaard
The Significance Of Labels: From Shy And Lazy To Autistic And Adhd, Katrine K. Bechsgaard
Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture
This article examines the ways in which language and conceptions of neurodivergent conditions, autism and ADHD, are connected in a Danish context. As in other Western countries, there are significant increases in diagnoses, and particularly women are being diagnosed in adulthood. The article focuses on how these conditions are perceived and talked about, utilizing concepts such as othering, labeling, and performativity. The analysis suggests that when individuals feel othered and stigmatized by diagnostic labels, it has less to do with the labels themselves and more to do with the connotations and pathologization connected with the labels. Furthermore, the analysis shows …

Dangerous Disclosure: An Autoethnographic Account Of My Autism Diagnosis And The Social Work Profession, Alice Running
Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture
The disclosing of an autism diagnosis presents particular challenge for autistic mothers, especially for those autistic mothers who are additionally advocating for their autistic children within public service provision. Research into autism and parental blame demonstrates how autistic mothers are disproportionately exposed to aspects of mother-blame.
Disclosure of an autism diagnosis for autistic mothers can therefore be understood as a complex decision-making process whereby managing autistic identity and understanding autistic self are impacted by the additional need to manage the perceptions of others and associated stigma. The decision-making process is further influenced by the tangible consequences of mother-blame (child removal) …

Black And Autistic In Neo-Nationalist America, Timotheus Gordon Jr
Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture
In "Black and Autistic in a Neo-Nationalist America," Timotheus “T.J.” Gordon, Jr. explores the intersectional challenges faced by Black autistic individuals in a socio-political climate marked by rising neo-nationalism. Drawing on personal experiences and historical contexts, Gordon navigates the metaphorical tightrope of double consciousness, as articulated by W.E.B. DuBois, to highlight the precarious existence of those who do not conform to monolithic identities. The essay critiques the melting pot analogy of American culture, advocating instead for a pluralistic society that recognizes and values diverse identities. Through a blend of autobiographical narrative and scholarly analysis, Gordon underscores the systemic marginalization of …
Inside Out: Autistic Psychologists On The Power Structures Of Diagnosis, Audrey J. Scaer, Christopher R. Dabbs
Inside Out: Autistic Psychologists On The Power Structures Of Diagnosis, Audrey J. Scaer, Christopher R. Dabbs
Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture
How do relationships between medicalized diagnostic powers and training intersect with the complex social identity of autism? How does self-identification (self-diagnosis) challenge the diagnostic status quo, created and scaffolded by enormously powerful social systems? In this paper, we reflect on the historical and modern dynamics of these power relations. As autistic psychologists actively working with and diagnosing autistic clients, we end this paper with an autoethnographic interrogation of our own self-diagnostic journeys and ways in which we’ve integrated our identities across personal and professional spheres of functioning.
