Amplifying Extremism: Small Town Politicians, Media Storms, And American Journalism, Nik Usher, Jessica C. Hagman

Communication: Faculty Scholarship

Within a week, a no-name Republican state representative from a town of 384 people in Illinois catapulted from obscurity to a prime-time appearance on Fox News' Ingraham Angle. This newly empowered politician, Darren Bailey, would go on to steer the pro-business Republican party in Illinois toward extremism. Democratic backsliding emerges across all levels of politics, but the threats posed by small-town politicians have been overshadowed by national-level politicians. This microstudy of a single politician's debut in the public eye showcases a novel approach to media corpus construction that combines proprietary and open databases, aggregated search tools, and targeted searching, and …

Examining The Relationship Between Employee Engagement, Job Satisfaction, And Turnover Intention In Healthcare Organizations, Nadiel Arocho-Saez Jun 2025

Examining The Relationship Between Employee Engagement, Job Satisfaction, And Turnover Intention In Healthcare Organizations, Nadiel Arocho-Saez

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Turnover intention among healthcare staff adversely affects the delivery of high-quality patient care and compromises healthcare organizations' financial sustainability. Effectively managing factors influencing turnover intention is critical for healthcare leaders to reduce turnover. Grounded in the Herzberg’s two-factor theory, the purpose of the quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between employee engagement, job satisfaction, and turnover intention in healthcare organizations. Primary data were collected from 74 nurses employed at a large multi-hospital healthcare organization in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, who completed an anonymous online survey using existing questionnaires. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: Adolescent patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Atypical Anorexia Nervosa (AAN) admitted to an inpatient medical unit are at risk of relapse if they do not receive follow up treatment. Yet treatment adherence following discharge remains poor. One possible reason for poor treatment adherence is insufficient support for parents. This pilot study explored the preliminary impact of a novel family navigator (FN) intervention on adolescent patient treatment adherence following inpatient care.

Methods: This was a pilot prospective study with a retrospective control cohort. Twenty-three adolescent patients with AN or AAN discharging from an Adolescent Medicine inpatient medical unit whose …

The ability to deliver a therapeutic sequence to a specific cell type in the human brain would make possible innumerable therapeutic options for some of our most challenging diseases; however, studies on adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector tropism have generally relied on animal models with limited translational utility. For this reason, establishing the tropism of common adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors in living human brain tissue serves as an important baseline for further optimization, as well as a determination of human brain cell types transduced by clinically approved gene therapy vectors AAV2 and AAV9. We have adapted an

The Effect Of Functional Training On Dynamic Knee Valgus Of Youth Soccer Players. A Pilot Study, Ole Tovar, Dóra Molnár, Badis Soussi, Ádám Uhlár, Tamás Horváth, Mira Ambrus

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 18(7): 561-574, 2025. Knee injuries are very common in soccer players. High loads on the knee during landing or changes of direction can lead to a valgus shift of the knee, known as Dynamic Knee Valgus (DKV). Many studies have shown that a large shift in DKV is a predisposing factor for knee injuries and disease, such as anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACL), patellofemoral pain syndrome or osteoarthritis. Functional training could be a great tool to reduce DKV. Thus, in this pilot study, nine male youth soccer players (mean age: 16.4 ± 0.2 years) took …

Multigenerational Exposure To Glyphosate Has Only Modest Effects On Life-History Traits, Stress Tolerance And Microbiome In A Field Cricket, J. W. Whitlock, P. M. Orwin, Z. R. Stahlschmidt

Pacific Faculty Work

Glyphosate is the most used herbicide worldwide, and it can be toxic to off-target species, such as insects. Although GLY-based herbicides (GBHs) can influence insect microbiomes, little is known about its cascading effects on fitness-related traits, such as life history or stress tolerance, especially in the context of long-term, multigenerational exposure. Thus, we exposed the variable field cricket, Gryllus lineaticeps, to GBH within and across generations to examine the potential role of GBH in developmental plasticity and evolution. Specifically, we measured its effects on life-history traits (e.g. developmental duration, adult body size and mass, and a life-history trade-off between investment …
