The Effects Of Caregiving For A Family Member With Alzheimer’S Disease, Megan Layton Jun 2025

The Effects Of Caregiving For A Family Member With Alzheimer’S Disease, Megan Layton

Student Works

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive disease that leads people with AD to become dependent on a family member. As the disease worsens, caregivers face an increase in responsibility and burden. There is a rising number of AD cases which will result in an increase of caregivers. Twelve articles were examined using the EBSCO database by using keywords such as “Alzheimer’s disease,” “caregiver burden,” “coping,” “assisted living,” and “grief.” An analysis of these articles indicated the complexities of caregiving for a loved one with AD. These complexities such as stress, decision-making challenges, changes in family dynamics, the adjustment to placing …

Examining Family Accommodation In Early Childhood, Allison Smith Dupre Jun 2025

Examining Family Accommodation In Early Childhood, Allison Smith Dupre

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The relationship between parent and child anxiety is well established. One factor that may account for this relationship is family accommodation (how family members alter their behavior to alleviate child distress). Family accommodation has been studied in child anxiety for the past decade and has been linked to increased parent and child anxiety. However, little research has focused on a young sample without clinical elevations of anxiety. Acknowledging the impact of family accommodation on child anxiety, the strong link between parent anxiety and accommodation, and the importance of early intervention, this study aimed to expand the literature of family accommodation …

China’S Role In A Future Korean War, Jake Rinaldi Jun 2025

China’S Role In A Future Korean War, Jake Rinaldi

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

This article argues that China’s intervention in a Korean conflict will hinge more on North Korea’s ability to hold territory than on bilateral ties. Rather than treat Chinese intervention as a yes-or-no proposition, this study models three scenarios—full intervention, sustained support, and limited support—based on North Korean resilience. Using Chinese-language sources and scenario-based analysis, it assesses how each model would shape key functional areas such as ISR, cyber, materiel, and force posture. The findings offer US defense planners a framework for anticipating variable People’s Liberation Army involvement in a future Korea contingency.

Stuck In The Maze: Syrian Unaccompanied Children Navigating Spheres Of Protection In Egypt, Anouk Pelletier De Chambure

Theses and Dissertations

This research explores the protection of Syrian unaccompanied and separated children (UASC) in Egypt who have fled the Syrian conflict and reflects on the role of formal protection providers and informal networks of solidarity. In hopes of pushing back against the over- essentialization of UASC as vulnerable children, this research unravels the lived experiences of seven aged-out Syrian UASCs who have been living in Egypt for a few years, which reveals their authentic and original crafting of spheres of protection. This thesis aims to contribute to a more extensive and more accurate understanding of the lives and needs of Syrian …

A Tragedy Of Incommensurability: Indigenous Rights And The Limits Of Human Rights Law, Zeina Ali Jun 2025

A Tragedy Of Incommensurability: Indigenous Rights And The Limits Of Human Rights Law, Zeina Ali

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the tragedy of incommensurability between indigenous rights and international human rights law. Despite the emergence of frameworks like the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), indigenous calls for sovereignty remain fundamentally unintelligible within a liberal order structured to preserve settler-state legitimacy. Tracing the historical and theoretical evolution of indigenous advocacy, this study critiques the strategic shift from demands for self-determination to claims of cultural rights. It argues that this shift offers no real alternative: self-determination and cultural rights are functionally equivalent, as both are ultimately filtered through legal and political frameworks that cannot …

Potential Strategies For Reducing Mortality And Morbidity In Acute Ischemic Cardiogenic Shock, Richard Smalling, James Mccarthy, Tim Henry, Ali Denktas Jun 2025

Potential Strategies For Reducing Mortality And Morbidity In Acute Ischemic Cardiogenic Shock, Richard Smalling, James Mccarthy, Tim Henry, Ali Denktas

Journal of Shock and Hemodynamics

Cardiogenic shock is predominantly caused by acute ischemic myocardial injury. Despite advancements in reperfusion strategies, outcomes remain poor, with the duration of ischemia before reperfusion playing a crucial role in the development of irreversible damage. This review synthesizes insights from animal models and human studies, highlighting the limited myocardial salvage beyond 90 minutes of ischemia. In light of the high mortality rates associated with cardiogenic shock, this review proposes re-evaluating pre-hospital fibrinolysis, exploring left ventricular unloading strategies before reperfusion, and assessing the potential role of endothelin antagonists. These approaches aim to improve outcomes in this high-risk population.

The Cellular Mechanisms Of Alzheimer's Disease Protection By The Pilra G78r Variant, Wenhan Cheng Jun 2025

The Cellular Mechanisms Of Alzheimer's Disease Protection By The Pilra G78r Variant, Wenhan Cheng

Theses and Dissertations

Microglial dysfunction is increasingly linked to Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Immune receptors like TREM2 and CD33 play opposing roles in microglial activity. TREM2 activation triggers immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motif (ITAM) signaling to promote microglial activities, including amyloid-β clearance, but variants in TREM2 such as R47H that impair its function increase AD risk. In contrast, CD33 is an inhibitory receptor that contains an immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motif (ITIM) which transmits signals that suppress microglial function. An AD-protective variant in CD33 alters CD33 activity, potentially enhancing TREM2 function. PILRA is another inhibitory immune receptor expressed by microglia that contains an ITIM. A naturally …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Food and nutrition security are key social determinants of cardiometabolic health. While food security reflects access to sufficient food, nutrition security incorporates the quality, consistency, and usability of food that supports long-term health. However, few studies have examined how household-level barriers to food utilization shape these relationships. Objective: This study assessed whether tangible (e.g., equipment, storage) and intangible (e.g., time, knowledge) food utilization barriers modify the associations between food and nutrition security and cardiometabolic outcomes in low-income adults.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 486 low-income adults across five U.S. states. Participants reported household food security (USDA …

Water scarcity and mismanagement are escalating global challenges, with over two billion people lacking access to safe drinking water and projections indicating that nearly two thirds of the world’s population could face water shortages by 2050 (Jones et al., 2024). This thesis presents an analysis of water governance and management practices in Denmark, Egypt, and Uganda-three countries that exemplify diverse hydro-climatic conditions, socioeconomic realities, and institutional frameworks. The study explains how governance structures, technological innovation, stakeholder participation, and policy design shape water resource outcomes, and how lessons from Denmark and Egypt can inform more resilient and sustainable water management in …

Microglial Phagocytosis In Epilepsy: Mechanisms And Impact, Abhijeet S Barath, Long-Jun Wu Jun 2025

Microglial Phagocytosis In Epilepsy: Mechanisms And Impact, Abhijeet S Barath, Long-Jun Wu

The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

Microglia are resident immune cells critical in maintaining brain homeostasis via their surveillance and phagocytosis function. Under disease contexts such as seizures and epilepsy, microglial phagocytic signalling is activated in response to both inflammatory and non-inflammatory cell death. This process involves a range of well-characterized 'find me' and 'eat me' signals, phagocytic receptors, and less well-characterized intracellular signalling pathways. In addition, epigenetic and transcriptional regulators orchestrate microglial responses to seizures, including the integration of phagocytic and inflammatory pathways. Interestingly, although inhibiting phagocytosis has been shown to improve neuronal survival and cognitive performance after seizures, it paradoxically increases the risk of …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Adenoviruses are highly immunogenic agents that have shown promise first as gene delivery vectors and later as oncolytic viruses. Currently, oncolytic adenoviruses are featured in over 30% of cancer virotherapy clinical trials. Due to their effective cellular uptake and hijack of cellular machinery, replication-competent adenoviruses are promising therapeutic agents for treating a wide range of tumors. Adenoviral influence on host cell acetylome regulation has regained attention, as these viruses redirect or suppress acetylation during replication, making them potentially desirable therapeutic agents for cancers driven by epigenetic modifications. In this review, we aim to cover the viral processes influencing the acetylome …

"You Need To Make The Decision You Can Live With": An Observational Study Of Anti-Abortion Centers In Tampa Bay, Anna Broich

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Anti-Abortion Centers (AACs) pose a grave threat to the reproductive health outcomes of Americans. Disguising themselves as licensed health clinics, AACs target vulnerable communities to prevent or delay abortion care through the spread of medical misinformation, contributing to abortion stigmatization. Situated in a state with a near-total abortion ban, this secret-shopper study aimed to understand the ways in which AACs in Tampa, Florida communicate anti-abortion rhetoric to pregnant people seeking abortions. Under the guise of people who suspect they are pregnant searching for abortion care, the main researcher and her assistants conducted the first phase of the study through 25 …

Examining Associations Between Sleep Variability And Treatment Outcomes In A Clinical Sample Receiving Psychotherapy Treatment For Alcohol Use Disorder, Charles A. Manzler Jun 2025

Examining Associations Between Sleep Variability And Treatment Outcomes In A Clinical Sample Receiving Psychotherapy Treatment For Alcohol Use Disorder, Charles A. Manzler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent among individuals with AUD. Sleep and alcohol have a bidirectional relationship such that alcohol damages sleep-promoting brain regions, and impaired sleep exacerbates cognitive and emotional deficits that can promote alcohol use. Despite the evidence that sleep improves across treatment for AUD, these improvements have had inconsistent associations with treatment outcomes. This may result from previous research focusing solely on mean values of sleep parameters rather than daily within-person variability. Sleep variability is emerging as an important correlate of physiological dysregulation and is connected to a range of negative symptoms that may promote alcohol use. The …

Examining The Impact Of Single-Case Design Graph Characteristics On Decision-Making For School-Based Professionals Within An Mtss Context, Jessica L. Andrews Jun 2025

Examining The Impact Of Single-Case Design Graph Characteristics On Decision-Making For School-Based Professionals Within An Mtss Context, Jessica L. Andrews

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Research investigating the display of single-case design (SCD) data has demonstrated that graphing characteristics can influence visual analysis and rater interpretations regarding the effect of an intervention. Data-based decision making within school settings, particularly within the framework of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), commonly includes the use of SCD’s to support this process. Despite the push for adherence to a standard assembly for linear graphs, there is no requirement as to how these graphs should be constructed. MTSS team members are often required to make decisions about whether an intervention should be continued (or not), and thus it is important …

Nepaliness As Assemblage: Diasporic Belonging, Colorism, And Caste In The Associational Life Of Nepali Migrants In Florida, Shuvechha Ghimire Sharma Jun 2025

Nepaliness As Assemblage: Diasporic Belonging, Colorism, And Caste In The Associational Life Of Nepali Migrants In Florida, Shuvechha Ghimire Sharma

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The research fundamentally challenges romanticized ideas of migration—shedding older inequalities, idealizing “leveling up,” and being a part of “unified diasporic communities”—and unmasks a rather uneasy, far more intricate reality: the preexisting sociocultural and political structures and identities are not shed, rather actively reproduced and rigorously, often consciously, reconfigured within the transnational diasporic spaces. As such, the research reveals that Nepali diasporic associations in Florida play a vital role in perpetuating and reshaping social inequalities and contested national identities, significantly impacting transnational dynamics. The work contends that caste hierarchies persist in structuring associational life, influencing participation and resource distribution. Concurrently, colorism …

Opportunistic Networks On The Move: A Context-Aware Framework For Opportunistic Networking Under Heterogeneous Mobility Settings, Sara Elsingergy

Theses and Dissertations

Most computer networks require continuous end-to-end connectivity between sending and destination nodes for data transfer. However, in certain scenarios—such as disaster zones, geographically remote areas with intermittent or no connectivity, or regions facing peak network loads—such continuous communication paths may be unavailable. A notable example of this challenge occurred during Hurricane Milton in 2024 and the Los Angeles wildfires in 2025, where Starlink provided free satellite internet to support disaster relief efforts and enable communication in affected areas. However, while offering satellite services at no cost can be effective in emergencies, it may not always be feasible on a global …
