Foodborne illnesses cause millions of deaths annually, posing a significant public health concern, particularly in regions with thriving street food cultures like the Philippines. This study investigated how sugar content and pH levels in street food dipping sauces affect microbial growth. Six sauce samples were prepared with varying sugar (25g, 50g, 75g) and pH levels (4.0, 3.6, 3.1). Microbial load was measured using the Standard Plate Count (SPC) method. While a moderate sugar concentration (50g) showed the lowest microbial load, this difference was not statistically significant (p=0.77). However, pH significantly impacted microbial growth (p=0.0034), with pH 3.6 showing the lowest …

With the Philippines being a country that often experiences typhoons, Search and Rescue (SAR) units are often mobilized and are usually prone to injury due to their exposure to dangerous environments. Thus, SAR robots were developed to aid these units and to decrease their chances of injury. However, only a few studies have developed amphibious SAR prototypes, which are needed in post-typhoon environments in the Philippines because of its capability to traverse through land and water. Additionally, the developed prototypes still have room for improvement. Specifically, in their locomotion, design and SAR features. Hence, the development of the Sustained Operating …

The 1986 EDSA Revolution was a pivotal moment in Philippine history, where Filipinos united to oppose the tyranny under the dictatorship of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.. However, the country still faces long-term instabilities in its aftermath. Thus, by accounting for the facets contributing to the discourse of the general will, the paper examines EDSA through Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s theory to ascertain whether political rallies are compatible under a social contract—an agreement concerning individuals’ rights and responsibilities to stimulate respectful coexistence and law adherence. This paper argues that political rallies are compatible if they uphold the general will and when the …

A (Loper) Bright Future? Charting Federal Ai Legislation With State Blueprints In A Post-Chevron World, William B. Simpson
Student Journal of Information Privacy Law
Despite a growing proliferation of algorithmic systems across the market, the U.S. lacks a comprehensive federal AI law to address the risks posed by this technology. The 2024 Supreme Court case Loper Bright v. Raimondo, which overturned the doctrine of Chevron deference, arguably complicates the passage of such a law by constraining Congress’ ability to use ambiguous statutory language as a means of reaching legislative consensus. Nevertheless, as Congress prepares to tackle this complex issue, it can look to state legislatures that have passed AI laws amidst similar constraints. The purpose of this article is to analyze certain state AI …

The collection of personal data in the private sector has grown exponentially over the years, leading to an exponential growth in the theft and the purchase of personal data by criminals and foreign adversaries. While the United States has implemented EO 14117 and the Protecting Americans’ Data from Foreign Adversaries Act of 2024 to protect against the inherent national security risks associated with data privacy, the United States must create an omnibus federal privacy law if it wishes to mitigate the national security risk. This paper introduces the reader to the increase in personal data collected by private organizations and, …

The Constitutionality Of Geofence Warrants, Sahara R. Damon
Student Journal of Information Privacy Law
In our current Information Age, new technologies are expanding faster than our legislatures can keep pace with. This has certainly been the case with “Geofence Warrants,” which are a form of reverse warrant that law enforcement has increasingly relied on to uncover perpetrators of crimes where a suspect may otherwise not be uncovered. Chatrie, the first case to be heard in a Circuit Court regarding geofence warrants, serves as a prime example of the typical context in which these warrants are employed. In Chatrie, over a week, three armed robberies took place at the same bank by what appeared to …

Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
This study aimed to compare the competency and psychological impact of using the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) to the traditional evaluation methods (TEM) in evaluating cardiology skills among nursing simulation students. Thirty-two students were initially assessed using TEM, and one week later using the OSCE. Scores of the student competency were compared using paired sample t-tests, while semi-structured interviews were used to expand on qualitative measures. Students' mean scores were significantly higher in using OSCE than in TEM (p< 0.001). Students' attitudes and perceptions of both approaches showed favorable attitudes towards OSCE on most of the items. The qualitative data showed that students with lower GPAs and utilizing the OSCE approach experienced higher anxiety. The psychological impact of evaluation approaches requires additional investigation.

Modulation Of Pulmonary Epithelial Paracellular Permeability By Pneumolysin From Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Alexandra S. Tamayo Moreira
Modulation Of Pulmonary Epithelial Paracellular Permeability By Pneumolysin From Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Alexandra S. Tamayo Moreira
Biology Theses
Pneumolysin (PLY), a key virulence factor of Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae), disrupts airway epithelial barriers, yet its cellular and molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. We aim to elucidate recombinant pneumolysin (rPLY)’s effects on Calu-3 bronchial epithelial barrier integrity and underlying pathways. This study investigates the effects of non-lytic and lytic PLY concentrations (5, 15, 30 µg/mL) to test the hypothesis that PLY increases epithelial paracellular permeability by affecting the anatomy and physiology of epithelial tight junctions. To address the hypothesis that PLY increases paracellular permeability through disruption of tight junction integrity in Calu-3 cells in a time- and dose-dependent …

Costs for UpToDate, the library’s primary point of care clinical tool, had increased to half of the acquisitions budget but without user affiliation data to facilitate cost sharing. A working group led by librarians was formed to review alternatives. Surveys indicated users preferred UpToDate and renewal was recommended by the working group, with costs being shared between the academic unit and the hospital. These results showed that the library can effectively lead analysis projects with this level of visibility, but persuading users to consider alternatives to a trusted tool can be challenging.

Background: The glomerular filtration rate (GFR), estimated from serum creatinine (SCr), is widely used in clinical practice for kidney function assessment, but SCr-based equations are limited by non-GFR determinants and may introduce inaccuracies across racial groups. Few studies have evaluated whether advanced modeling techniques enhance their performance. Methods: Using multivariable fractional polynomials (MFP), generalized additive models (GAM), random forests (RF), and gradient boosted machines (GBM), we developed four SCr-based GFR-estimating equations in a pooled data set from four cohorts (n = 4665). Their performance was compared to that of the refitted linear regression-based 2021 CKD-EPI SCr equation using bias (median …
