Why Deliberate Practice Is Not A Basis For Teacher Expertise, Jim Hordern, Nick Pratt, Peter Kelly, Katherine Evans
Why Deliberate Practice Is Not A Basis For Teacher Expertise, Jim Hordern, Nick Pratt, Peter Kelly, Katherine Evans
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
In this paper we examine the notion of ‘deliberate practice’, which has formed the basis of several teacher education programmes in England and the United States and promises to improve the quality of teaching via highly structured training programmes. We identify early criticisms of deliberate practice and unpack the assumptions embedded in its underpinning thinking. We demonstrate that deliberate practice is insufficient as a basis for teacher expertise as teaching is not a ‘performance profession’, the activities of teachers cannot all be easily or meaningfully decomposed, and the ‘goals’ of teaching are not solely geared towards maximising measurable student attainment. …

Introduction: Radical cystectomy with pelvic node dissection remains the standard of care for muscle-invasive bladder carcinoma (MIBC); however, there is a growing interest in bladder preservation alternatives among the elderly population. Guidelines indicate that partial cystectomy (PC) combined with pelvic node dissection (LND) can be considered as an alternative in carefully selected individuals. Using the National Cancer Database, we analyzed the overall survival (OS) between PC with and without LND among octogenarians.
Methods: We identified octogenarians with localized muscle-invasive bladder carcinoma (cT2-3N0M0) and urothelial histology who underwent PC with or without LND between 2004 and 2018. Based on the number …

Objective: Low in-hospital mobility is highly prevalent and can cause hospital-associated-disability. In both research and clinical care, valid and reliable outcome measures of in-hospital mobility are necessary. The Acute Care Mobility Assessment (ACMA) provides a single measure of hospital out-of-bed mobility and may be a promising tool. The purpose of this study was to perform a cross-cultural validation to facilitate international uptake. Methods: We performed a linguistic validation (translation, cognitive interviewing, cultural adaptation) of the ACMA in Denmark and investigated the convergent-validity of the Danish version (ACMA-DK) in older hospitalized (+65) Danish adults by evaluating the correlation between the ACMA-DK …

Interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) that evaluate an individual’s T-cell activation response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb)-specific peptides serve an important role in diagnosing tuberculosis (TB). However, there are substantial challenges to the use of IGRAs in resource-limited settings. Further, IGRA diagnostic performance can also be compromised in anergic individuals. Here we describe a microfluidic chip-based antigen-specific T-cell response assay (ASTRA) that automates the detection of M.tb-specific T-cell activation responses to facilitate screening for latent M.tb infection and TB. We observe that ASTRA demonstrates high specificity for M.tb infection in independent patient cohorts. Compared with IGRA, ASTRA shows greater …

A Sem Study Of The Three Domains Of Religious Experience, Mediated By Intellectual Humility And Cognitive Flexibility, Predicting Religious Tolerance Among Christian University Students, Conrad Dioniz Zygmont, David Dioniz Bolton
Adventist Human-Subject Researchers Association
The present study extends an existing mediation model of religiosity and socio-cognitive variables influence on religious tolerance by considering three religious co-variates (informal religion/personal spirituality, formalised religiosity, and God image) as antecedents. The sample for this study is recruited through university Christian student associations. The results will be discussed from an Adventist perspective challenging contemporary discourse of religiosity vs spirituality, and image of God.

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 18(7): 610-621, 2025. Rowing requires strength, endurance, and technique, where stroke efficiency depends on body mechanics, movement sequencing, and stroke rate, which impact speed transfer. This cross-sectional study investigates the role of kinematic differences in stroke mechanics as a key component of performance analysis in Olympic and Traditional rowing. Thirteen elite national-level female rowers (age: 26.9 ± 5.1 years; body mass: 60.6 ± 6.9 kg; height: 166.7 ± 6.7 cm) performed three stroke-rate conditions on two ergometer setups: an Olympic rowing ergometer and a modified ergometer with a static seat replicating Traditional rowing. The stroke …

Numeracy
Governments and policymakers around the world are encouraging teachers to teach numeracy across the curriculum. This paper proposes a theoretical framework for the knowledge required to teach numeracy across multiple disciplines. The concept of teacher knowledge is complex and consists of many different facets of knowledge. This paper proposes a framework that integrates theories from existing models of general and subject specific teacher knowledge, along with a model of numeracy. The authors developed the "N" framework, an integrated framework of numeracy knowledge, subject specific knowledge, and pedagogical content knowledge. Each element is essential for teaching numeracy across the curriculum in …

United States: Rhode Island Limited Bank Holiday, 1991, Ayodeji George, Sophia Alden
Journal of Financial Crises
In 1990, the Rhode Island Share and Deposit Indemnity Corporation (RISDIC) was a private mutual deposit insurance corporation funded by member institutions. Late that year, after the failures of two of its insured institutions in July and October, other RISDIC member institutions faced large depositor withdrawals, as concerns began to focus on the financial health of RISDIC itself. RISDIC had maintained inadequate reserves, and on December 31, 1990, it found itself lacking the resources to cover depositor withdrawals from member institutions. RISDIC leadership requested a state-appointed conservator, which meant that all its member institutions no longer had the deposit insurance …

Argentina: National Bank Holidays, 2001, Owen Heaphy
Journal of Financial Crises
Starting in 1991, Argentina operated a currency board regime under which the central bank guaranteed a one-to-one peg of the Argentine peso to the US dollar. But in 2001, markets became increasingly concerned that the central bank would be unable to maintain the peg and would allow the peso to devalue against the dollar. At that time, more than two-thirds of Argentine bank deposits were denominated in dollars. Throughout 2001, depositors withdrew funds from banks; by November, peso deposits had declined by more than one-third and dollar deposits had fallen by one-tenth. On November 28, 2001, the systemwide banking run …

Effects Of Sheep Grazing On Dry Matter Production And Persistence Of A Lucerne Crop, I Delgado Enguita
Effects Of Sheep Grazing On Dry Matter Production And Persistence Of A Lucerne Crop, I Delgado Enguita
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In Spain, lucerne is mainly grown on irrigated areas for hay production and dehydration industry. The utilization of lucerne under grazing is very infrequent, due to the detrimental effects on both, animal health and plants persistence that have been attributed to it. However, lucerne dry matter (DM) production and quality in addition of being its cultivation more economical than grasses, offer interesting advantages to be used as a green forage (Delgado, 1984). New Zealand workers (Agronomy Society of New Zealand, 1982) have stressed that lucerne could be successfully managed under grazing when long resting periods were provided between short grazing …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
INTRODUCTION Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb), grown on over 14 million ha, is the most common pasture grass in humid areas of the eastern USA and, to limited extent, in the northwestern USA. The presence of an endophyte in tall fescue has been associated with a number of animal health problems including reduced performance (Stuedemann and Hoveland, 1988). Intake was reduced in diets containing the endophyte in seed, hay or green forage (Hemken et al., 1979; Schmidt et al., 1982). However, no studies have been reported which used direct methods to determine intake differences of grazing animals as influenced …

Year-Round Grazing Systems For Beef Production From Conception To Slaughter, V G. Allen, J P. Fontenot, W P. Green, R C. Hammes Jr
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Throughout much of the world cattle are produced mainly on forage. High grain yields in the U.S. have led to feeding cattle high grain to minimize time in the feedlot, and overhead costs. Recent emphasis on lean meat, diet and health issues has renewed interest in finishing cattle on forages. The objective of this research was to evaluate various forage systems of beef production from conception through slaughter with minimum grain. Effects of forage system during cow-calf and growing phases on performance and carcass characteristics during the finishing phases were evaluated. The research included calves born in late winter-early spring …
