Evaluating The Predictive Value Of Basc-3 Anxiety Scale And Working Memory Index Scores For Clinically Significant Test Anxiety: A Comprehensive Analysis Of Non-Classifiable Cases, Des'tiana S. Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation will explore how test anxiety (TA) affects working memory (WM) and whether certain factors can help predict higher levels of test anxiety. Anxiety has been defined as a common experience that can show up in various forms—like general worry, social fears, panic attacks, and specific phobias (APA, 2022). It was described as often triggering our natural “fight-or-flight” response, which can impact our ability to focus, think clearly, and remember things. For students, test anxiety has been especially challenging, affecting how they perform in high-stakes academic settings. Using data from a university based psychological assessment center, this study will …

Faculty Research 2025

Clinical and translational science needs to address roadblocks to the translational processes. We conducted a survey at two institutions, a private medical school and a large public university, to understand the frequency and distribution of barriers and roadblocks to research. We reviewed the literature to compile a pool of barriers and roadblocks and convened a panel of relevant stakeholders to develop a 20-item questionnaire. Survey respondents were asked to select and prioritize the five leading clinical and translational roadblocks, provide information regarding their academic degrees and rank/position, complete open-ended items regarding their areas of research, and optionally add additional remarks …

Tyler, J Matthew Mahoney, Mark P Keller, Candice N Baker, Margaret Gaca, Anuj Srivastava, Isabela Gerdes Gyuricza, Madeleine J Braun, Nadia Rosenthal, Alan D Attie, Gary Churchill, Gregory W. Carter

Faculty Research 2025

Although many genes are subject to local regulation, recent evidence suggests that complex distal regulation may be more important in mediating phenotypic variability. To assess the role of distal gene regulation in complex traits, we combine multi-tissue transcriptomes with physiological outcomes to model diet-induced obesity and metabolic disease in a population of Diversity Outbred mice. Using a novel high-dimensional mediation analysis, we identify a composite transcriptome signature that summarizes genetic effects on gene expression and explains 30% of the variation across all metabolic traits. The signature is heritable, interpretable in biological terms, and predicts obesity status from gene expression in …

Educational Technologist Perceived Self-Efficacy During Emergency Remote Teaching Due To A Nonpharmaceutical Intervention, Katherine R. Rapp

Dissertations

This paper discusses the challenges and opportunities of educational technologists (ETs) during emergency remote teaching (ERT) in a non-pharmaceutical intervention (NPI), due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The study was guided by Albert Bandura’s social cognitive theory and self-efficacy framework. The study highlights the positive and negative reflections of self-efficacy for ETs during the transitions to different strategies in classroom teaching. It acknowledges the positive and negative effects on ETs from self-regulation, observational learning, and reciprocal determinism. The study design used was qualitative, aiming to identify the perceived self-efficacy of ETs during ERT in an NPI. Eight ETs from rural school …

Gallium-Containing Bioactive Glasses: Their Influence On Ion Release And The Bioactivity Of Resulting Glass Polyalkenoate Cements, Lana Margaret Placek, Danielle Lee Perry, Mark Robert Towler, Anthony William Wren

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A series of glasses (0.48SiO2 − [0.40-x]ZnO − 0.12CaO-xGa2O3, x = 0, 0.8, 0.16) was developed to formulate a series of Ga-containing glass polyalkenoate cements (GPCs). The solubility of GPCs was tested using DI water, and it was found that the sample containing the highest mol% of Ga, LGa-2, had the most Ga ion release. The GPCs were incubated in SBF, and SEM/EDS analysis revealed that the at% of P increased, while the at% of Si decreased, highlighting the CaP precipitation on the GPC surface. The at% of Ga also decreased, reinforcing the Ga release from the GPC. Cellular testing …

The Experience Of Codependency In Young Adult Romantic Relationships, Amanda S. Soares Jul 2025

The Experience Of Codependency In Young Adult Romantic Relationships, Amanda S. Soares

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

This qualitative study used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to explore the lived experiences of codependency among four young adults (ages 21–24) who had recently exited a codependent romantic relationship. Through in-depth interviews, themes around emotional enmeshment, identity loss, boundary erosion, emotional suppression, and healing were found. Findings indicate that early attachment patterns, trauma, and socialization intersect with emotional vulnerability and self-worth to create conditions ripe for codependent dynamics. Participants describe both the psychological toll of these relationships and the personal growth that followed. These insights contribute to the limited literature on young adult codependency and may inform prevention and intervention …

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

Background: Severe pneumonia remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children worldwide. Severe pneumonia causes death during hospitalization, and survivors are prone to malnutrition after discharge from the hospital. The World Health Organization and United Nations International Children’s Fund recommend ‘continued’ feeding following a severe pneumonia illness without specific recommendations on nutritional support. This recommendation could influence health workers’ and caregivers’ nutritional practices. This study aimed to explore the perspectives and practices of health workers and caregivers for mitigating malnutrition among children with severe pneumonia.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional qualitative study between June and November 2021 among …

Investment In Family Medicine To Improve Health Outcomes In Sub-Saharan Africa, Sunanda C. Ray, Mpundu Makasa, Innocent Besigye, Jacob Shabani, Martha Makwero

Family Medicine, East Africa

Family physicians (FPs), as educators, capacity builders and clinical governance leaders of primary care (PC) teams, work to make them more effective and responsive to the needs of their patients. Various strategies are required to raise the profile of Family Medicine (FM) to ensure stronger representation in health sector planning and policy development for advocacy on behalf of the communities they serve. An illustration is given of the need for FP leaders to become equal partners in the National Surgical, Obstetric and Anaesthesia Planning process to ensure safer surgery at district hospitals and to address unmet surgical needs. Integrating FM …

Methane Removal Under The Paris Agreement, Romany M. Webb Jul 2025

Methane Removal Under The Paris Agreement, Romany M. Webb

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

In the 2015 Paris Agreement, the international community agreed to “strengthen the global response to climate change” by limiting the “increase in global average temperatures to well below" 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and ideally to 1.5 degrees Celsius. As recognized in the Agreement, to stay within these limits, global greenhouse gas emissions must be rapidly reduced, “so as to achieve a balance between anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gases in the second half of this century” — a situation commonly described as “net zero.” The need to reach net zero has prompted growing …

Varied Legal Parameters Shape Fiduciaries’ Ability To Act On Climate Risk, Cynthia Hanawalt, Andy Fitch Jul 2025

Varied Legal Parameters Shape Fiduciaries’ Ability To Act On Climate Risk, Cynthia Hanawalt, Andy Fitch

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

Commentators who advocate either for or against corporate and asset managers addressing climate risks often refer to “fiduciary duty” as justification for their claims. Yet no field of corporate or asset management actually imposes one standalone fiduciary duty. Nor do any two business-law fields impose the same fiduciary regime. Instead, these fields adopt differing arrays of fiduciary duties to address various types of relationships, comprising a different blend of affirmative obligations and/or prohibitions, assessed with different degrees of strictness by enforcers and courts. As a result, overgeneralizations about fiduciaries’ duty in all business-law contexts tend to further obscure what a …

We investigated associations between preconception and prenatal heat stress and wildfire (WF) smoke exposures on adverse birth outcomes and whether neighborhood climate vulnerability is an effect modifier in the Maternal And Developmental Risks from Environmental and Social stressors cohort (N = 713). Generalized linear models were fit to test the association between exposures and small-for-gestational-age (SGA), low birthweight (LBW), and Fenton growth z-score outcomes, adjusting for confounders. Living in a high climate vulnerability index neighborhood was tested as an effect modifier. During preconception, increases in heat stress and WF measures were associated with higher odds of SGA. Living in the …

Creating Space For Social Justice Discussions – How We Made The Uncomfortable Comfortable, Emilie Keeton, Msod, Jacqueline Hill, Bridgette Jones

Presentations

Current models of graduate medical education and faculty development have been described as inadequate for teaching, learning, and dialoguing about race and racism in medicine. We created the “Not-So Journal Club” (NSJC) to provide opportunities to review articles and discuss current events and social justice issues. Respondents reported planning to discuss with colleagues, make change to professional behaviors, and requested actions they could take to spur change. NSJC model appears to be effective to engage faculty in meaningful conversations about race and racism in medicine.
