Factors Influencing Successful Community Reentry For Formerly Incarcerated Men Who Have Received Supportive Services: A Qualitative Study, Ryan W. Fechner

Theses and Graduate Projects

The current study examined reentry experience among men following incarceration to determine salient protective and risk factors. The study reviews the impacts of incarceration, previous factors of recidivism identified in research, and qualitative research conducted on justice-involved individuals. Using a grounded theory qualitative approach, nine men recruited from a substance use treatment program who were released from prison within the past five years were interviewed to explore protective and risk factors. Findings from the current study were consistent with previous research in identifying barriers to reentry, such as difficulties finding housing, employment, and transportation. Additional findings indicate the importance of …

Docetaxel (DTX), a chemotherapeutic agent widely used in cancer treatment, has limited therapeutic efficacy owing to its poor oral absorption and low bioavailability. This study aims to improve DTX solubility by predicting its compatibility with ionic liquids (ILs) using conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS) computational modelling. A library of 340 ILs comprising 17 cations and 20 anions was screened for their potential to dissolve DTX, with a particular focus on imidazolium-based ILs that enhance its solubility and pertinence to cytotoxic applications. Computational analysis identifies ILs containing cations such as 1-methylimidazolium [MIM] and 1,3-dimethylimidazolium [DMIM] and anions such as …

Spatial Patterning And Growth Of Naturally Regenerated Eastern White Pine In A Northern Hardwood Silviculture Experiment, David A. Kromholz, Christopher R. Webster, Mike Hyslop

Michigan Tech Publications

In forests dominated by deciduous tree species, coniferous species are often disproportionately important because of their contrasting functional traits. Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.), once a widespread emergent canopy species, co-occurs with deciduous hardwoods in the northern Lake States, but is often uncommon in contemporary hardwood stands. To gain insights into the potential utility of hardwood management strategies for simultaneously regenerating white pine, we leveraged a northern hardwood silvicultural experiment with scattered overstory pine. Seven growing seasons post-harvest, we conducted a complete census of white pine regeneration (height ≥ 30 cm) and mapped their locations and the locations of …

During mouse embryonic brain development, the Evf2 ultraconserved enhancer (UCE) lncRNA guides the Dlx5/6UCE to ~129 sites across chr6. However, previous work identified only 4 transcriptionally regulated targets associated with Evf2-Dlx5/6UCE-gene guidance, raising questions about the significance of Evf2-regulated Dlx5/6UCE-gene interactions. Here, single-cell transcriptomics reveal far greater alignment between Evf2-Dlx5/6UCE-gene guidance and transcriptional regulation than previously reported. Evf2 divides chr6 into short-range ( < 10 Mb distant), activated genes, and long/super-long-range (10-129 Mb distant), repressed genes, identifying seizure regulating genes in the embryonic subventricular zone that predict adult phenotypes. Evf2-regulated Dlx5/6UCE-gene distances and directions (closer to or further from gene targets) can be decoupled from gene target transcriptional effects. Evf2 regulates Evf2-ribonucleoprotein (RNP) binding in a combinatorial manner to key regulatory sites, including chr6 Evf2-Dlx5/6UCE-gene guided sites, Evf1/2 RNA-directly bound sites (RBSs), and inter-chromosomal HiC looping interactions. RBSs divide chromosomes into multi-megabase domains enriched for Evf2-regulated RNP recruitment, transcription factor motifs, and HiC looping interactions. Together with Evf2-controlled homeobox motif recognition at Evf2-RNP recruitment sites and transcription factor motif enrichment in RBSs with DNA identity, this work supports direct roles for Evf2 in enhancer-gene guidance and transcriptional regulation, with the potential for both site-specific and chromosomal domain specific RNP recruitment.

Comparison Of Recurrence Rates In Chemical Matricectomy With Phenol And Nail Bracing: A Scoping Review, Jessica Sima, Amanda Killeen

School of Podiatric Medicine - Student Research

Introduction: Ingrown toenails are one of the most common nail conditions and are usually treated with chemical matricectomy using phenol (CMP). However, this procedure is often contraindicated in patients with diabetes mellitus or peripheral vascular disease. Orthonyxia, or nail braces application, is a non-invasive alternative treatment for ingrown toenails. The nail braces are spring wires with one side shaped into a hook that is placed under one side of the nail, and the other side attached to a plastic pad that is glued to the nail plate. The braces retain the normal shape of the nails without removing them, allowing …

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) poses a significant challenge in oncology due to its high incidence and poor prognosis in unresectable cases. Current treatments, including surgical resection, systemic chemotherapy, and liver-directed therapies, often fail to effectively target hypoxic tumor regions, which are inherently more resistant to these interventions. This review examines the potential of a novel therapeutic strategy combining irreversible electroporation (IRE) ablation and Clostridium novyi-nontoxic (C. novyi-NT) bacterial therapy. IRE is a non-thermal tumor ablation technique that uses high-voltage electric pulses to create permanent nanopores in cell membranes, leading to cell death while preserving surrounding structures, and …

Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Compressed Sensing Cine Enhances The Workflow Of Cardiac Magnetic Resonance In Challenging Patients, Huaijun Wang, Anne Schmieder, Mary Watkins, Pengjun Wang, Joshua Mitchell, S Zyad Qamer, Gregory Lanza

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: A key cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) challenge is breath-holding duration, difficult for cardiac patients.

AIM: To evaluate whether artificial intelligence-assisted compressed sensing CINE (AI-CS-CINE) reduces image acquisition time of CMR compared to conventional CINE (C-CINE).

METHODS: Cardio-oncology patients (

RESULTS: In 89 participants (58.5 ± 16.8 years, 42 males, 47 females), total AI-CS-CINE acquisition and reconstruction time (37 seconds) was 84% faster than C-CINE (238 seconds). C-CINE required repeats in 23% (20/89) of cases (approximately 8 minutes lost), while AI-CS-CINE only needed one repeat (1%; 2 seconds lost). AI-CS-CINE had slightly lower contrast but preserved structural clarity. Bland-Altman plots …

Military personnel deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan were exposed to emissions from open-air burn pits, where plastics, metals, and medical waste were incinerated. These exposures have been linked to deployment-related respiratory diseases (DRRD) and may also impact neurological health via the lung-brain axis. To investigate molecular mechanisms, adult male rats were exposed to filtered air, naphthalene (a representative volatile organic compound), or a combination of naphthalene and carbon black (surrogate for particulate matter; CBN) via whole-body inhalation (six hours/day, three consecutive days). Lung, brain, and plasma samples were collected 24 h after the final exposure. Pro-inflammatory biomarkers were assessed using …

Pacific Faculty Work

Background: Orthodontic miniscrew anchorage induced a paradigm shift in orthodontics, by avoiding unwanted movement of anchoring teeth. Failure of miniscrew anchorage (premature loosening of the miniscrew) is known to be related to root proximity after insertion. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate root proximity of orthodontic miniscrew implants using CBCT and to more precisely investigate the correlation between root proximity and miniscrew failure. Materials and methods: CBCT images of 47 miniscrews, placed buccally between maxillary first molars and second premolars, were used in this retrospective study. In the reoriented CBCT images, presence and amount of root proximity were measured. Miniscrew …

Transformation With Genes To Improve Lipid Production And Barcoding To Identify Unknown Algal Species, Michelle T. Rada Jul 2025

Transformation With Genes To Improve Lipid Production And Barcoding To Identify Unknown Algal Species, Michelle T. Rada

Theses and Dissertations

With the rising demand for alternative fuels, algal-based biofuels are a promising, sustainable source that meets commercial interest while producing lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels. This thesis explored two studies, evaluating microalgae for their future potential in lipid yield for biofuel production.

The first study involved developing a cost-efficient electroporation protocol that allowed for the genetic transformation of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii using the pChlamy_4 vector, which supports future cloning of genes to enhance lipid production. Parameters affecting DNA uptake and integration into algal genomes were studied: the effect of cell density, the settings of the electroporation device, and …

Demystifying The Nuances Of The Lipid Patient: A Guide For Primary Care Providers, Merle Myerson, Kyle Gillett, James O'Hara, Richard Potter, Neil Skolnik

Abington Jefferson Health Papers

Atherosclerosis, a major cause of mortality and morbidity in the United States (US), is driven by complex factors, including the cumulative burden of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and other atherogenic lipids and lipoproteins. Lipid management in US primary care aims to prevent atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) events through screening and LDL-C lowering to risk-based goals. However, lipid screening and ASCVD treatment is often inadequate, with few patients meeting LDL-C goals in clinical practice. Primary care providers have a vital role in identifying patients most at risk of ASCVD to prevent ASCVD events and improve patient outcomes. There are multiple different …

Examining The Relationship Between Stigma And Physical Disability Through Lived Experiences, Apphia M. Donoghue

Student Journal of Occupational Therapy

The primary objective of this study is to examine the relationship between stigma and physical disability, to discover the impact that perceived stigma has on several factors in a person’s life including overall health, well-being, and quality of life. A qualitative research design was used. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted to examine the relationship between stigma and physical disability, and to discover the impact of stigma on overall health and well-being. Three themes are identified: stigma narratives, shifts in awareness, and factors inhibiting quality of life. Stigma narratives contained three subthemes: experiences with stigma, frequency of stigma, and settings where …

Listening To Facilitate Change: Youth And Indigenous Voices Call For Critical Environmental Justice At Great Salt Lake, Sarah Woodbury, Christina Morgan Jul 2025

Listening To Facilitate Change: Youth And Indigenous Voices Call For Critical Environmental Justice At Great Salt Lake, Sarah Woodbury, Christina Morgan

Transforming Communities

As Great Salt Lake faces rapid ecological decline, nearby communities face serious environmental injustices. Yet, despite threats ranging from toxic dust to migration inequality, state actions have been insufficient to maintain recommended water levels and ecological health at the lake. Our critical commentary uses the lens of critical environmental justice to consider human values connected to the lake. We briefly describe current advocacy efforts for the lake including a 2023 gathering and resultant panel at the 2024 Community Engagement Conference in Moab, Utah. Ultimately, we argue that braiding together multiple types of knowledge encourages the growth of new approaches to …

"Fulfilling Work With A Sufficient Salary": Resident Librarians' Perceptions On Compensation, Courtney Shareef Jul 2025

"Fulfilling Work With A Sufficient Salary": Resident Librarians' Perceptions On Compensation, Courtney Shareef

POC in LIS Summit

Because of its low pay and slow salary growth, the master’s in library and information science was once ranked by Forbes.com as the worst degree for jobs. For the resident librarian, this can be particularly troubling, given the precarious nature of the temporary position. Although there is a growing body of literature on various aspects of resident librarian experience, virtually nothing exists on views of their compensation. How does the resident librarian’s perception of compensation impact their residency experience? How does that perception also impact the librarian’s decision to remain in librarianship at the residency’s conclusion? This lightning talk will …

Using Inclusive Language In Library Instruction To Foster Equitable Spaces, Dominique Dozier Jul 2025

Using Inclusive Language In Library Instruction To Foster Equitable Spaces, Dominique Dozier

POC in LIS Summit

In this session, I’ll share how I’ve used the inclusive language strategies I learned in the ACUE Inclusive Teaching for Equitable Learning course to improve library instruction and create more equitable spaces for students. Language is powerful, and the way we speak can either open doors or unintentionally create barriers for students from diverse backgrounds. By using inclusive language, we can ensure all students feel respected, valued, and supported in the library.

I’ll walk through simple, practical examples of how inclusive language can be applied in library workshops, one-on-one research appointments, and everyday interactions with students. Whether it’s using gender-neutral …

Immediate Sites For Change: Transforming Librarian Burnout Into Hope And Finding Liberation, April Ibarra Siqueiros Jul 2025

Immediate Sites For Change: Transforming Librarian Burnout Into Hope And Finding Liberation, April Ibarra Siqueiros

POC in LIS Summit

As a tenure-track librarian specializing in user experience, I have faced significant barriers contributing to burnout and mental health challenges. Placing hope in library-wide or systemic level changes often left me feeling powerless and hopeless. However, exploring and focusing my attention to the “immediate sites” where I do have agency (the spaces, relationships, and practices within reach) opened pathways to possibility and hope.

In this presentation, I will share how identifying and working within these immediate sites and pairing them with radical imagination, creative practice, joy, curiosity, and the support of collaborative allies allowed me to begin reclaiming a sense …
