The Gendered Digital Divide: G20 Initiatives For Gender Equality, Inclusion, And Sustainability, Tinuade A. Ojo, Mobolanle E. Sotunsa, Diana J. Fox, Karen Carpenter, Leith L. Dunn

Journal of International Women's Studies

The gendered digital divide remains a pressing global issue that undermines efforts toward gender equality, inclusive growth, and sustainable development. Despite progress in technological access and innovation, women, particularly in the Global South, continue to face systemic barriers to digital inclusion, from limited internet connectivity and affordability issues to unequal participation in STEM and digital economy sectors. This policy brief calls on the G20 to lead in narrowing the gendered digital divide by promoting equitable access to digital tools, enhancing women’s digital literacy, supporting gender-responsive technological design, and ensuring online safety. The recommendations herein provide a roadmap for governments, international …

Gender, Marginalization, And Digital Technology In Islamic Learning: A Nigerian Perspective, Abdulgafar Olawale Fahm

Journal of International Women's Studies

The integration of digital technologies has significantly transformed the landscape of Islamic education in Nigeria, enhancing accessibility to religious knowledge while simultaneously reinforcing pre-existing socio-cultural disparities. Utilizing an intersectional analytical framework, this study critically explores how gender, socio-economic diversity, and Islamophobia collectively influence experiences within digital Islamic learning environments. Employing qualitative feminist methodologies, I conducted semi-structured interviews from November to December of 2024 with Islamic scholars, educators, students, and general digital platform users from Lagos, Ilorin, and Maiduguri. The findings indicate that intersecting factors such as gender roles, socio-economic conditions, geographical location, and Islamophobic attitudes distinctly shape patterns of digital …

Envisioning Transgender Equity: Amplifying Global South Narratives Through Inclusive Archives And Education, Saloni Walia, Sukanya Mondal

Journal of International Women's Studies

In their 17 Sustainable Goals (SDGs) for 2030, the United Nations (n. d.) places the goal of “achieve[ing] Gender Equality and empower[ing] all women and girls” at the fifth spot as SDG 5. However, reports from 2016 reveal that the SDGs mainly focus on issues concerning heterosexual cisgender women and girls, with no reference to the LGBTQ community (United Nations, 2016). This oversight raises concerns about the inclusivity of SDG 3, which aims to “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages” (United Nations, n.d.), but its application to people with diverse gender identities remains unclear. This …

True Independence Or Fake Freedom: Deconstructing Media Representations Of Women In Chinese Otome Games, Xiaoyu Song Jul 2025

True Independence Or Fake Freedom: Deconstructing Media Representations Of Women In Chinese Otome Games, Xiaoyu Song

Journal of International Women's Studies

The rise of women gamers has driven demand for emotional virtual experiences, particularly in otome games with romantic narratives. Offering a hybrid methodology, this study analyzes character portrayals in three popular Chinese otome mobile games—Mr. Love: Queen’s Choice, Light and Night, and Tears of Themis—while also exploring the responses of women players through semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that women protagonists in otome games are often young, dependent on men characters, and hold subordinate roles, thus underscoring the presence of traditional gender norms. This aligns with media studies scholarship that suggests media representations of women often …

Sound of Revival is a deeply personal nonfiction narrative that chronicles one woman's journey from the depths of abuse to the light of healing, hope, and rediscovered love. Through vivid, unflinching reflection, the author recounts the trauma she endured, the courage it took to walk away, and the profound impact of generational resilience both as a mother and a survivor. Set against the backdrop of relocation and transformation in Guam, this essay explores themes of recovery, identity, motherhood, and the quiet strength required to start over. It is a testament to survival, the power of chosen family, and the quiet …

Journal of Child Science

Background: Nephrotic syndrome, characterized by glomerular damage, primarily affects children. While renal symptoms have been extensively studied, there is growing concern about cardiac complications, particularly the prolongation of the QTc interval, which can increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. This study aimed to assess the QTc interval in children diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome and explore the factors affecting QTc prolongation. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 42 children aged 2-10 years diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome in Mashhad from 2019 to 2020. Gastrointestinal Mucormycosis In An Adolescent Presenting As Acute Gastric Perforation, Swathy Subhash, Thomas Oliver, David A. Enoch, Stephen Farrell, Catherine O’Sullivan, David Inwald

Journal of Child Science

There is a rise in invasive fungal infections (IFI) in neonates and children. Mucormycosis is the third most common cause of IFI following Candida and Aspergillus, with a notable increase in incidence in recent years. We present the case of a 15 year old immunocompetent boy who presented with acute gastric fundus perforation, requiring emergency surgical intervention. Histopathological examination and culture of the resected specimen showed evidence of Mucormycosis. Despite appropriate antifungal therapy and surgical interventions, his condition progressed and ultimately proved fatal. The recognition of Mucormycosis can be challenging and requires a high level of suspicion. The infection can …

The Collection Problem: How The Circuit Split On Pleading Standards In Securities Fraud Claims Undermines Federal Regulatory Goals, Lucas Immer Jul 2025

The Collection Problem: How The Circuit Split On Pleading Standards In Securities Fraud Claims Undermines Federal Regulatory Goals, Lucas Immer

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

The Great Depression is generally recognized as the greatest economic calamity in United States history. One of the Great Depression’s many causes was reckless financial speculation driven in part by financial fraud. In response to the crisis, Congress passed the 1934 Securities Exchange Act (“the Exchange Act”), which courts have long held creates a private right of action for plaintiffs who experience an economic loss due to reliance on a material misstatement surrounding the purchase or sale of a security. A prima facie claim for securities fraud under the Exchange Act requires a showing of scienter, defined as “a …

Stare Decisis And Zombie Laws, Alicia Bannon Jul 2025

Stare Decisis And Zombie Laws, Alicia Bannon

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

In recent years, the Supreme Court has shown little interest in stare decisis—the principle that courts should honor precedent—as an animating value in constitutional interpretation. This has put many fundamental rights in a vulnerable posture. This Essay focuses on one underappreciated dimension of the decline in respect for stare decisis as it relates to fundamental rights: the relationship between stare decisis and what I will call, and what others have called, “zombie laws.”

Zombie laws are laws that were rendered inoperative by courts but never rescinded; for example, an abortion ban that became unenforceable after Roe v. Wade. …

Doubting Thomas And Questioning Stare Decisis Under The Roberts Court, Wilfred U. Codrington Iii

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

“[S]tare decisis is ‘not an inexorable command.’ ” Frankly, every time I read these words in a judicial opinion of late, I shudder. And, in fact, it seems like I am reading these words— and shuddering—with increasing regularity.

First off, of course it is not. At times, the Supreme Court has sanctioned manifest injustices in the law. The prime example is the Court’s 1896 decision in Plessy v. Ferguson, which sustained racial segregation under the Fourteenth Amendment. With the blessing of the judiciary, this interpretation of the Reconstruction Constitution supported a regime of racial segregation until, more than …

On Stealth Overruling, Tyler Rose Clemons Jul 2025

On Stealth Overruling, Tyler Rose Clemons

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

From Loper Bright v. Raimondo to Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Roberts Court has shown itself more than willing to overturn longstanding pillars of American jurisprudence explicitly. While such cases and other pathbreaking opinions have understandably garnered the lion’s share of attention, the Court has also demonstrated an increased willingness to tweak, modify, or even functionally overrule doctrines without expressly stating that it is doing so. I call this phenomenon “stealth overruling.”

Literary Study In The Era Of Artificial Intelligence In China, Fen Gao, Pengfei Zhang

Kritika Kultura

In view of the salient characteristics of technological innovation and human-machine symbiosis in the era of artificial intelligence, Chinese literary circles have purveyed a productive exploration of “literary study in the era of artificial intelligence.” Chinese scholars’ innovation of literary theory consists of three characteristics. First, they have established the original theory of “brain text,” systematically analyzed the definition, formation mechanism, and relationship between “brain text” and literature, language, text, and cognition, and applied this theory to literary criticism. Second, on the basis of sorting out and summarizing the core viewpoints of Western digital humanities theory, Chinese scholars have carried …

Artificial Intelligence Between Criminal Accountability And The Difficulty Of Attribution (Medical Robot As A Case Study), Malak Daakour Jul 2025

Artificial Intelligence Between Criminal Accountability And The Difficulty Of Attribution (Medical Robot As A Case Study), Malak Daakour

BAU Journal - Journal of Legal Studies - مجلة الدراسات القانونية

AI entities, particularly medical robots, face a fundamental challenge in criminal accountability: the difficulty of attributing criminal error to a specific entity when harm occurs to a patient. When AI algorithms make an incorrect treatment decision that leads to health complications or death, it is difficult to easily determine whether the error was the result of a programming error, poor device maintenance, or even human misuse. The criminal liability of AI entities, particularly medical robots, hinges on the issue of whether these entities have legal personality. This remains controversial in jurisprudence, given the absence of legislation. In this context, the …

Advancing Interactive Web Cartography Through Designing And Developing An Open-Source, Data-Driven Framework For Accessible Geovisualization Of Geospatial (Big) Data, Sarigai Sarigai

Geography ETDs

The growth of geospatial big data has intensified the demand for open-source, accessible tools for interactive spatial exploration. This dissertation introduces a modular web mapping framework and details its design, extension, and evaluation to advance geovisualization through user-centered, transferable design. The first study presents the original framework, named dciWebMapper, establishing foundational cartographic and information visualization principles, with a focus on modularity and extensibility. The second study extends dciWebMapper with advanced capabilities—such as diverse map types, bivariate visualizations, temporal filtering, spatial querying, and hotspot analysis—and demonstrates its broad transferability across domains. The third study offers a structured usability evaluation of …
