Tooth Brushing Pressure Detection Using Only A Smartwatch, William Spielbauer, Dheryta Jaisinghani

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

  • Roughly half (46%) of American adults aged 30 or older show signs of gum disease.1
  • Improper tooth-brushing technique – in particular, excessive pressure when brushing – can cause inflammation and recession of the gums due to abrasion (gingivitis).2
  • While there are ways to track and prevent excessive pressure (smart brushes have this feature built in), these are expensive solutions that require specialized equipment.

A Temporal And Spatial Analysis Of Agricultural Impacts On Water Bodies In The Cedar River Watershed, Erin Kennedy, Clair Taylor, Mohammad Iqbal Aug 2025

A Temporal And Spatial Analysis Of Agricultural Impacts On Water Bodies In The Cedar River Watershed, Erin Kennedy, Clair Taylor, Mohammad Iqbal

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

Water quality in Iowa has a direct impact on the health of humans, the environment, and the economy. This is why pollution of surface water in northeast Iowa is not only a local, but also a regional and national concern. Agricultural runoff from Iowa has an impact on water bodies as far as the Gulf of Mexico. Excess nutrients, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, enhance phytoplankton growth and lead to the eutrophication of stream water. It also contributes to the hypoxia zone, also known as the “dead zone” in the Gulf of Mexico. In Iowa, excess nutrients have severely damaged lake …

Silent Hazards: Safety And Risk Protocols Of Potential Hazardous Museum Specimens, Madelyn Wilson, Alexa Clements, Nathan Arndt, Lee S. Potter

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

Museum collections can contain a range of materials including rock and mineral specimens. However, the ability of museum curators to correctly identify geological samples and assess associated risks is largely dependent on their background. Exposure, which can be thought of as a combination of the concentration of a hazardous material and the amount of time that material is in contact with living tissues, should be minimized to ensure the safety of museum staff and visitors. While best practices for minimizing exposure to radioactive or toxic minerals are widely available, it is challenging to find similar recommendations for the safe handling …

Whole Genome Sequencing Of Bumblebees With Varied Tissue Quantity, Extraction Methods, And Bioinformatic Inquiries, Halle Hoefing, Ai Wen

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

Bumblebee populations are a key source of pollination in many local prairies across Iowa, and genetic diversity among these populations is essential to their health. In order to study the variation, it needs to be examined at the genomic level. However, the current method for bumblebee DNA extraction is lethal, and involves removing tissue from the thorax of captured bees. To find a non-lethal method, procedures were adapted from reference literature that used tarsal clippings of bees rather than capturing and freezing the entire bee. DNA was extracted from 18 previously captured Bombus impatiens individuals, among which four bees were …

Measurement And Analysis Of Nitrogen Dioxide And Particulate Matter In Iowa, Kevin Du, Regan Mays, Ben Lynch

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

This study investigates air quality in Iowa by combining 20 years of satellite-based nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) data with real-world measurements of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Using NASA’s Giovanni system, we compared annual average NO₂ maps from 2005 and 2024 and analyzed trends over two decades. Results show a clear decline in NO₂, especially in urban areas, likely due to cleaner technologies and regulations. In parallel, PM2.5 was measured using a MiniVol TAS Sampler and a portable Temtop air monitor. The highest PM2.5 level (151μg/m³) was recorded while driving on a gravel road near a crop field, …

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Background and objective:

Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) is the gold standard for myocardial reperfusion in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Numerous studies have shown that thrombus aspiration can prevent distal embolization and reducing the risk of microvascular obstruction (MVO). Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is considered the gold standard for the evaluation of MVO. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of thrombus aspiration in STEMI patients as an adjunctive technique to primary PCI in reducing the incidence and extent of MVO evaluated by CMR.

Methods

Ninety-three patients with heavy thrombus burden were enrolled in this study; …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Trauma experience is a pervasive problem for Indiana students that may hinder their functioning within the educational environment. Difficulty in addressing the impact of trauma for students often makes educators feel ineffective and is a contributing factor in educators leaving the profession. Trauma-informed care is an evidence-based framework of practice that may be implemented to mitigate the impacts of trauma for students. Indiana legislation now mandates pre-service educators receive education in trauma-informed care, but there is limited research on the current state of in-service educator trauma-informed care knowledge and skills, as well as the impact on their self-efficacy as educators. …

A Convergent Parallel Mixed Method Design Analysis Of Sponsorship And The Advancement Of Women In The Workplace, Shaparak Malek-Morvai

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Sponsorship is vital for advancing women's careers but is often inconsistently applied. Limited programs for women seeking leadership roles and a lack of sponsors can hinder progress. This study used a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative survey data from 73 participants with qualitative insights. Sponsors advocate for protégés, emphasizing visibility, promotion, and networking, while mentorship offers guidance and coaching. Many leadership roles confuse sponsorship with mentorship, as noted by Helms et al. (2016). However, the key difference lies in influence. The study had four objectives: to explore women's perceptions of sponsorship, analyze how roles and tenure influence these perceptions, enhance discussions …

Competence To Stand Trial And Criminal Responsibility: The Effect Of Pretrial Publicity On Insanity Verdicts, Hannah Hennessey

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Despite the legal distinction between competence to stand trial (CST) and criminal responsibility (CR), the potential for jurors to conflate these constructs due to pretrial publicity (PTP) remains an under-examined issue in forensic psychology research. Therefore, the current study investigated whether exposure to PTP about a defendant’s CST influences jurors’ CR verdicts. A national sample of jury-eligible adults (N = 598) was recruited through Prolific. Participants were randomly assigned to read one of three mock PTP news articles: (1) the defendant was CST, (2) the defendant was previously found incompetent to stand trial (IST) but was later restored to competency, …

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) can cause severe gastrointestinal immune-related adverse events (irAEs), often leading to treatment interruption and increased morbidity. Immune-mediated colitis (IMC) ranges from mild diarrhea to life-threatening colitis, sometimes requiring urgent intervention. While corticosteroids are the first-line treatment, selective immunosuppressive therapy (SIT) with either infliximab or vedolizumab is used for steroid-refractory or dependent cases. However, standardized practices are lacking, and treatment decisions are largely left to provider discretion. This study compares infliximab and vedolizumab for IMC, focusing on remission rates, recurrence, SIT dosing, and systemic steroid exposure duration.

METHODS: We identified six retrospective cohort studies that compared …

Applying Transcriptomics For Technology Development And Conservation In North American Marine Organisms, Cory Von Eiff Aug 2025

Applying Transcriptomics For Technology Development And Conservation In North American Marine Organisms, Cory Von Eiff

Dissertations

RNA biology is a rapidly expanding field, with many avenues of discovery among marine organisms. In this study, we analyze both mollusks and sawfish. First, we perform an evaluation of sRNA biogenesis pathways throughout Mollusca, with emphasis on the easter oyster, Crassostrea virginica. Understanding these molecules prescribes RNAi-based gene silencing approaches, benefiting genetic investigation and biotechnology. Similar to other animal groups, mollusks have conserved microRNAs (miRNAs), with some shared with ecdysozoans and deuterostomes; however, there is no evidence of an endogenous small interfering RNA (siRNA) pathway. These results suggest that long double-stranded RNA (dsRNA)-based RNAi is not appropriate for gene …

Examining Nonprofit Social Service Sector Burnout And Turnover: Trait Mindfulness As A Moderator Of Work-Life Balance And Compassion Fatigue, Melissa L. Brown

Dissertations

Nonprofit burnout and turnover surpass all national industries, specifically in the social services subsector. In contrast to their for-profit counterparts, nonprofit turnover rates remain on the rise. While literature indicates that one of the primary drivers of nonprofit turnover is burnout, more granular research proposes that nonprofit social service employees encounter a distinct form of burnout generated by the exposure to secondary traumatic distress known as compassion fatigue. This study investigated the antecedents of this phenomenon by examining trait mindfulness as a moderator of work-life balance and compassion fatigue among nonprofit social service providers. To sustain a workforce that provides …

Establishment Of Neonatal Sepsis Predictors Utilizing Non-Invasive Monitoring Techniques, Dalton Janssen Aug 2025

Establishment Of Neonatal Sepsis Predictors Utilizing Non-Invasive Monitoring Techniques, Dalton Janssen

Dissertations

Neonatal sepsis remains one of the leading causes of global neonatal mortality. Reactionary approaches for diagnosis and treatment have dominated the tactics in addressing neonatal sepsis but clinical intuition is an untapped resource that could lead to earlier prediction of sepsis onset. Nurses and other staff with specialized training and experience who have served as routine caregivers for a specific patient are able to identify when the patient’s status is altered. This clinical intuition may be substantiated by referencing specific patient trends in non-invasive measures over time. This retrospective, exploratory study examined whether variation in non-invasive monitoring variables could serve …

Aging Is Not All Doom And Gloom: How Do Beliefs About Aging Moderate The Effects Of Mortality Salience On Ageism Attitudes?, Kristen Schwindt Edmondson Aug 2025

Aging Is Not All Doom And Gloom: How Do Beliefs About Aging Moderate The Effects Of Mortality Salience On Ageism Attitudes?, Kristen Schwindt Edmondson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of the study is to examine how young adults’ beliefs about aging moderate the effects of mortality salience on their ageism attitudes. Past research suggests that ageism is, in part, due to the presence of elderly people reminding people of their own aging process and mortality (Martens et al., 2004). Little is known, however, about how individuals’ beliefs about aging may moderate the impact of mortality salience on their attitudes toward aging. Some people tend to perceive aging-related changes as relatively fixed (i.e., essentialist belief), whereas others perceive them as relatively malleable (nonessentialist belief). Would a more malleable …

Beyond Keeping The Lights On: Covid-19’S Impact On Lower Mississippi River Valley Museums And Public History Sites, Liz Skilton, Ian Beamish

Department of History

This article reviews the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on public history sites and museums along the Lower Mississippi River Valley between 2020 and 2024. Constructed from interviews with sixty-seven sites across a four-year period, it uses a regional approach to examine how pandemic closures, reopening processes, and adaptations impacted public history sites and museums in the short-, medium-, and long-term, arguing that the pandemic created lasting changes through adaptation rather than large-scale closure of public history institutions. It concludes with an assessment of what can be learned from the pandemic period’s effect on public history.

More Than A Mirror: Investigating Social Media’S Role In Shaping Social Comparisons And Identity Around Perceptions Of Beauty, Janella Eshiet

Communication (PhD) Dissertations

The rapid expansion of social media has transformed interpersonal communication and the way that individuals engage in social comparisons in their daily life. While existing literature emphasizes the negative psychological effects of both social comparison and the use of social media platforms, there remains a need to better understand the positive experiences of users in these digital spaces. Guided by social comparison theory (SCT; Festinger, 1954) and social identity theory (SIT; Tajfel & Turner, 1979), the current study applied an interpretative phenomenological approach (IPA, Smith et al., 2022) to explore how social media users interacted with beauty-centered narratives and the …
