The Lived Experience Of Siblings Living In The Home With An Autistic Child, Betty Polion-Cheatum

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

A sibling in the household is beneficial for a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). According to research studies, however, most of the attention is placed on managing the ASD child's behaviors. To provide insight into the non-autistic child’s perceptions, this qualitative phenomenological study investigated the lived experiences of siblings living in a home with an ASD sibling. A questionnaire survey method was used to analyze the non-autistic siblings' perceptions and lived experiences. This dissertation reviewed what sibling relationships look like for a typically developing sibling of a child with ASD. The gap in research showed there is not enough …

Exploring The Impact Of Foot Overpronation On Gluteus Medius Activation In Recreational Runners: A Biomechanical Analysis, Austin D. Stroeh

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Pes planus foot type and gluteus medius (GMed) dysfunction are independently considered risk factors in developing several overuse running-related injuries because they propagate kinematic and kinetic changes in the leg during the gait cycle. While both produce similar kinesiological actions, research on the relationship between foot type and GMed activation in running is limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between pes planus and pes rectus foot types and their association with GMed activity during running gait in recreational endurance runners. 47 recreational endurance-based runners running approximately 5-15 miles weekly for at least 6 months with …

Developing Microelectrode Arrays As Multiplex Point-Of-Care Diagnostics, Yu-Chia Chang Aug 2025

Developing Microelectrode Arrays As Multiplex Point-Of-Care Diagnostics, Yu-Chia Chang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Antibiotic resistance poses a significant global health challenge, particularly in urinary tract infections (UTIs), where 92% of cases exhibit resistance to at least one antibiotic, causing over 260,000 deaths annually. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and growing awareness of the adverse effects of unnecessary antibiotic use highlight the urgent need for better UTI diagnostics. Current state-of-the-art methods are either expensive and time-consuming, or they lack specific details about the nature of the antibiotic and only determine inflammation. This hinders timely and effective treatment decisions regarding whether an antibiotic is actually necessary. Given this backdrop, there is a demand for a …

Problem: Limited operating room (OR) availability is a significant challenge in many healthcare facilities. Overbooked or understaffed ORs can lead to delays in surgical procedures, which are particularly detrimental in urgent and emergency situations (Cholewa et al., 2024). The OR is among the costliest areas in a hospital; it is essential to improve efficiency in surgical throughput to deliver timely care for urgent and emergent cases, enhance patient outcomes, and manage healthcare costs effectively.

Context: The microsystem for this project is a Northern California OR that handles a high volume of surgical procedures. There is a dedicated red room for …

Master's Projects and Capstones

Chemotherapy education is critical when it comes to improving patient confidence, reducing anxiety, and enhancing symptom management. However, there is still a variety of patients who begin their infusion therapy with a limited understanding of what to expect. This quality improvement project was conducted at an outpatient infusion center, exploring whether combining traditional nurse-led chemotherapy education calls with a digital care platform would enhance patient satisfaction and confidence compared to standard care alone. A total of forty-one adult oncology patients participated in an educational survey at the end of each follow-up phone call, which was completed three days after their …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Plankton monitoring datasets help inform indicators for marine biodiversity assessments under the European Union Marine Strategy Framework Directive and United Kingdom Marine Strategy. These indicators are used to assess long-term changes in the state of the pelagic habitats of the Northeast Atlantic which then guide policy formation and implementation to achieve Good Environmental Status. Across all ecosystems, environmental change has the potential to impact upon human wellbeing by changing the quantity and quality of ecosystem services. Here, we develop a socio-ecological assessment model that can describe how variations in pelagic habitat state, evidenced by plankton indicators, can impact human wellbeing. …
